No Screening this Saturday, 5th August 2023

No JAFWA until Saturday 12th August 2023!

The year is half over, and JAFWA is taking its regular break from Screening this Saturday. We wish to be refreshed when we return in August proper. Remember to observe the anniversary of the nuclear bombings and Hiroshima and Hagasaki with due solemnity. Lest we forget.

And if you got to the Perth Convention & Exhibition Centre you can attend Pixel Expo 2023 which also may succour you inner fan.

When JAFWA returns on the 12th we will be previewing an episode from the anime adaption of a manga series I am enjoying – the zombie apocalypse is not suppose to be so relaxing and fun.

Screening on Saturday 29th July 2023

Screening on the evening of Saturday, July 29th 2023

JAFWA operating in Winter hours! Program starts at 4:15PM!

As July comes to an end, this week we have our Monthly Survey, where our dear JAFWAites can express their opinion on the various programs previewed and other suggested possibilities, utilising a scalar grading system.
And later, we have the monthly Member’s Prize Draw.

Before the survey during the Dinner Break, we have 3 items in the program:

  1. As per usual, we can’t be entirely certain we will have the next episode of “The Devil is a Part-timer” ready for this week, as it will only be expected to screen on Japanese TV this coming Thursday.
  2. This will be the last episode of “Dr Stone” for a while, as the rest of season 3 isn’t expected until October.
  3. We will have a preview episode before the Dinner Break, displacing “Ningen Fushin” this week. A domestic drama involving a cat.

And we continue on with the other wonderful anime we have in our program. Including the beginning the regular screening of the second season of the TV series “the Ancient Magus Bride”, The final episodes of the first season of “Jujutsu Kaisen”, and the return of “In/Spectre” that took a break for a preview item last week.

Dr Stone The Masterful Cat is Depressed Ancient Magus Bride Jujutsu Kaisen

A reminder of our current issue – what do we call our new computer? Traditionally the JAFWA computer, with its small form factor is known as “chibi“, though for official purposes that only addressed JAFWA’s first dedicated computer. The one that broke down in July 2023 since being in service from 2016, was officially “Shin-chibi“. So what do we call this even smaller form factor computer? Lindsay has suggested “micro-chibi“, while I am partial to “chibi-chibi“. Please provide worthwhile suggestion for the official name (“Chibi McChibi Chibiface”, and variants thereof, is only worth getting hurt).

Expected program for the evening of Saturday July 29th, 2023.

All items in the original Japanese language with English subtitles. With assistance from a grant from and

4:15pm Devil is a Part-Timer season 3 Ep 3/? TBC

Screening on the evening of Saturday, July 22nd 2023

JAFWA operating in Winter hours! Program starts at 4:15PM!

Thanks to one and all who came to the JAFWA AGM last week and made it a success. Unfortunately we didn’t have enough election nominations, thus you are stuck with your current committee – Drew, Glenn, Mark, Sally, Audrey, Greg and Dale. All praise to your overlords for another year!

As you know, we had an unexpected problem with our playback computer (its motherboard died on the Tuesday previous). But most fortuitously, our members Lindsay and Elliot came to the rescue and found us a replacement machine, that worked quite successfully last week.
But now a new issue arises – what do we call our new computer? Traditionally the JAFWA computer, with its small form factor is known as “chibi“, though for official purposes that only addressed JAFWA’s first dedicated computer. The one that broke down in July 2023 since being in service from 2016, was officially “Shin-chibi“. So what do we call this even smaller form factor computer? Meanwhile, we hope to have the next episode of “The Devil is a Part-timer” ready for this week, as it will only be expected to screen on Japanese TV this coming Thursday.
And we continue on with the other wonderful anime we have in our program. Though this week will be the final episode of “the Ancient Magus Bride” OAV, but then the next week we go onto the TV series.
Be aware that this week we will be adding two preview episode to the program, the first is an isekai show that got the loudest/excited response when we showed various promo videos a few weeks ago, and the other is more of a supernatural mystery story.

Reborn as a Vending Machine Undead Girl Murder Farce

We (the current committee) just need a written nomination form indicating your intention to nominate yourself, along with your membership number.

We thank Sally for for stepping up and giving us a fish and chip run last session. Any body else going to selflessly volunteer for a food run this week?

This week there will be several exciting changes to JAFWA‘s regular program, as we have 4 time-slots opening up this week. Though one of them may be a preview item, as the 3rd season of “Devil is a Part-timer” has not yet screened in Japan (sorry to all those people who voted for it in the survey). Otherwise we will have the next season of a couple of favourites, and a slightly surprising choice starting in the program this week. Thanks to everyone who filled in the Survey at the end of June.

No Screening this Saturday, 1st July 2023

No JAFWA until Saturday 8th July 2023!

The year is half over, and JAFWA is taking its regular break from Screening this Saturday. We wish to be refreshed when we return in July proper, with the Annual General Meeting and committee election coming up during our second screening. Still time to nominate for the election, or raise an issue for the AGM.

Though if you attend the Hall this Saturday from Midday, you are likely to encounter the local Doctor Who club.

But for the week of the 8th, we will be starting several new regular series, which haven’t been decided yet. Stay tuned!
Thanks to everyone who filled in the survey form, but not a lot of people admitted to rating the second season of “Tokyo Revengers” very high. This disappoints your beloved MC.

Dale’s Suggestive Remarks

There was another entry in our suggestion box, from Saturday 17th of June.
However, the handwriting is cramped and the pen ink keeps running out, and with my eyesight I can’t reproduce it accurately

Basically he is saying that he has a DVD of the original “Kimba the White Lion” series, from 1965, and is nominating it for the retro time-slot.
I believe it is in Black & White, and I am not clear if it is dubbed into English or properly subbed. His main issue is that the episodes are not sequential on the DVD, but all mixed up.

I can probably deal with the mixed up order of the episodes. But if it is black & white, it is verging on being even more retro than I can deal with comfortably. Still sounds awesome though.
Thinking back on it, I may have seen some “Kimba” episodes on TV when I was a much, much, much younger. Mind you, what sticks harder in my memory is something called “Marine Boy”, and maybe something called “The Amazing Three”.

The expected program

Below is the tentative program for the evening of Saturday July 8th, 2023.

Hooray, Hooray, Hooray!
Nominations have opened for the upcoming JAFWA elections. Bring forth your vision of JAFWA and get people to vote for you. We (the current committee) just need a written nomination form indicating your intention to nominate yourself, along with your membership number.

In addition to a tasty helping of anime this week, it looks like we are also going to have a Pizza Run!
Former committee member David Fisher has acquired a voucher for reduced-price pizza, and is intending to share with his fellow JAFWAites, though he can only accept cash only.
For all I know, he may be nominating for the election and trying to buy your vote with easy to afford Pizza. Or not. But who can ignore pizza?

Several of JAFWA‘s regular programs are coming to their final episode (for instance “Do It Yourself” ends this week), meaning in July we will be starting several new series (to be decided, in part, with next week’s survey).
However, let us not wait that long. This week we jump July and start regularly screening the third season of “Demon Slayer” Yay!
And to stop us being too complacent, we shake up our anime program this week with a preview episode of “Jigokuraku” (aka “Hell’s Paradise”), as condemned criminals, accompanied by their bespoke executioners, travel to a lethally dangerous isle in search of the elixir of life for the shogun.

No Screening this Saturday, 3rd June 2023

No JAFWA until Saturday 10th June 2023!

Yes, JAFWA is taking its regular break from Screening this Saturday. We wish to be refreshed when we return in June proper.

Though if you attend the Hall this Saturday from Midday, you are likely to encounter the local Doctor Who club.

Don’t forget that in July it will be time for the AGM and JAFWA elections. Isn’t it time you stepped up and participated? Nomination open in June – plan your election platform.

Dale’s Suggestive Remarks

It is a pleasant surprise to discover that we have another entry in our suggestion box, from Saturday 27th of May.
The Suggestion is anonymous, and the hand-writing is neater than mine:

  • Sousou no Frieren

I have been delightedly reading the volumes of this manga in the JAFWA library (where it is known as “Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End”), and am heartened by the news that an anime adaption has been made. I will be promoting this anime to the JAFWA committee for it to be included as one of JAFWA’s preview episodes, once it comes out in the last quarter of this year.
There is so much new anime coming out from Japan, even if you discard all the anime series that are “not great”, there is still usually more series than JAFWA has available preview slots. Still, after reading the manga, I expect the anime adaption of “Frieren” should make the cut. Stay tuned!

For those of you who have not been reading the manga from the JAFWA library, “Frieren” harks back to old-school DnD campaigns, where a hero’s party goes on a quest to defeat a great evil and save the world. The story of Frieren starts years after the success of the Hero’s party, and 4 compatriots went their own way – the Human warrior, the Human cleric, the Dwarf and the Elf wizard. Frieren, the near immortal Elf wizard finds herself curious about the ideals espoused bu her short-lived companions, and with renewed interest goes back into the world outside the elf woods and learns the joys of interacting with people she meets on her journey.
