Screening on the evening of Saturday, July 22nd 2023
Thanks to one and all who came to the JAFWA AGM last week and made it a success. Unfortunately we didn’t have enough election nominations, thus you are stuck with your current committee – Drew, Glenn, Mark, Sally, Audrey, Greg and Dale. All praise to your overlords for another year!
As you know, we had an unexpected problem with our playback computer (its motherboard died on the Tuesday previous). But most fortuitously, our members Lindsay and Elliot came to the rescue and found us a replacement machine, that worked quite successfully last week.
But now a new issue arises – what do we call our new computer? Traditionally the JAFWA computer, with its small form factor is known as “chibi“, though for official purposes that only addressed JAFWA’s first dedicated computer. The one that broke down in July 2023 since being in service from 2016, was officially “Shin-chibi“. So what do we call this even smaller form factor computer? Lindsay has suggested “micro-chibi“, while I am partial to “chibi-chibi“. Please provide worthwhile suggestion for the official name (“Chibi McChibi Chibiface”, and variants thereof, is only worth getting hurt).
Meanwhile, we hope to have the next episode of “The Devil is a Part-timer” ready for this week, as it will only be expected to screen on Japanese TV this coming Thursday.
And we continue on with the other wonderful anime we have in our program. Though this week will be the final episode of “the Ancient Magus Bride” OAV, but then the next week we go onto the TV series.
Be aware that this week we will be adding two preview episode to the program, the first is an isekai show that got the loudest/excited response when we showed various promo videos a few weeks ago, and the other is more of a supernatural mystery story.

The Devil is a Part-Timer season 3 (Hataraku Maou-sama)
Having been thwarted in his attempts to conquer Ente Isla, the mighty demon lord Satan escapes through a portal with his general Alciel… And winds up in modern day Tokyo with very little magical power left. His resources for world domination now consist of a tiny rented apartment and a job at a fast food restaurant. To survive and find a way to return to Ente Isla, Satan adopts the name Sadao Maou and finds that the Hero Emilia is in similar circumstances. And now they have to look after a very special child.

Dr Stone season 3 “New World”
Modern society is lost when a mysterious light leaves everyone petrified in stone. Thousands of years in the future, super genius Senku awakens and begins restoring civilisation with his Kingdom of Science. With the Stone Wars over, the former members of Tsukasa’s Empire of Might join forces with the Kingdom of Science to build a ship capable of sailing across open ocean to seek answers on the mystery of the global petrification. However, before they can begin their voyage Senku and his friends need to find some key resources and push some new scientific advancements to build the type of vessel they need.
This evening’s Episode: “Science Wars ”
Senku is revealed to have disguised a Rochelle Salt sound transmitting crystal and a copper wire antenna as an earring, allowing him to send instructions from his wireless telephone into Kohaku’s ear, though she can’t send replies. Senku manages to send a basic radio controlled car to Kohaku so she can send back a written message. As none of them have learned to write yet Kohaku sends Senku a confusing drawing.
Ningen Fushin – aka Apparently, Disillusioned Adventurers Will Save the World (Ningen Fushin no Boukensha-tachi ga Sekai o Sukuu You Desu)
Veteran adventurer Nick’s life is falling apart. Despite all the knowledge and expertise he’s devoted to his adventuring party, his respected leader kicked him out, his girlfriend dumped him, and his teammates shamelessly accused him of embezzlement. Tired, heartbroken, and looking for a drink, Nick chances upon a few kindred spirits who are jaded as he is. Together, these disillusioned adventurers form an unstoppable team out to save their bleak, depressing world.
This evening’s Episode: “Curran’s Secret”
In the past Curran served the human she believed would become the hero, Kalios. Curran was swindled by a merchant but Kalios exposed the crime and forced him to give Curran the necklace, which she treasured. Kalios eventually betrayed her and stole her Dragon King Gem, a jewel sacred to the Dragon-kin she was tasked to keep safe for her whole life
Ancient Magus Bride – “The Boy From the West and the Knight of the Blue Storm” (Mahou Tsukai no Yome: Nishi no Shounen to Seiran no Kishi)
Chise Hatori, 15 years old. Lost, without hope, and without family, she is bought for money … not by another person, but by a non-human sorcerer named Elias. Though she hesitates, she begins life anew as his apprentice and future wife. Now grown more confident in her role as a sleigh beggy, there are further adventures before she can go to sorcerer’s college.
Tonight’s OAV Episode: “The Boy From the West and the Knight of the Blue Storm: Part 2”
As night falls, Evan summons the rest of the Wild Hunt as they prepare to return home. Wanting to bring Gabriel with him to free him from his frail body, Evan hypnotizes Gabriel into riding with him, intending to take him to their realm. Chise and Elias give chase, but have trouble getting close to the Wild Hunt due to their aura.
preview – Reborn as a Vending Machine, I Now Wander the Dungeon ( Jidouhanbaiki ni Umarekawatta Ore wa Meikyuu ni Samayou)
The protagonist was a vending machine otaku in his past life, having died protecting vending machines from traffic accidents. When he awakens, he finds himself on a lakeshore and confused about what happened. He knows only one thing, now he’s a vending machine. He meets a girl outside of a labyrinth in this new world, and his story starts to progress.
This evening’s Episode: “The Vending Machine Travels”
An unnamed man is killed in an accident involving a vending machine and reincarnates into another world as one himself. He discovers he contains options to upgrade himself from points accumulated by customers spending money. Unfortunately, it also costs points to charge his power supply and without a customer he will lose power in one month.
Demon Slayer (Kimetsu no Yaiba) – season 3
Tanjiro Kamado is a kindhearted and intelligent boy who lives with his family, making money by selling charcoal. Everything changes when his family is attacked and slaughtered by demons (oni). Tanjiro and his sister Nezuko are the sole survivors of the incident. Nezuko has now become a demon, but still surprisingly shows signs of human emotion and thought. Tanjiro becomes a demon slayer to help his sister turn human again and to prevent the same tragedy that happened to him and his sister, from happening to others.
Tonight’s Episode: “Bright Red Sword ” Swordsmith Village arc
After saving Kozo from a fish demon, Muichiro is taken to his work shed for a new blade, but they encounter a waiting Gyokko. Mitsuri arrives at the village, using her elongated, whip-like sword to swiftly defeat the attacking fish demons. After Karaku pins Nezuko down beneath heavy debris, she grips her hands onto Tanjiro’s blade, smearing it in her blood.
Jujutsu Kaisen
Negative human emotions – regret, bitterness, shame – are the source of all curses that infest the world and hide in everyday life, leading to death in the worst cases. Yuji Itadori, a particularly strong young man, attempts to save a friend from a curse, only to wind up consuming the special grade curse of Ryoumen Sukuna’s finger. Only a curse can eliminate another curse, and Yuji’s career as a cursed person who must exorcise curses has now begin.
Tonight’s Episode “The Origin of Blind Obedience”
Megumi, Nobara, and Yuji are sent out to investigate mysterious deaths connected to Megumi’s middle school alma mater, Saitama Urami East Junior High. They discover the deaths were caused by a curse and that Megumi’s stepsister, still in a coma, may become a victim of it as well if the three don’t exorcise the curse. Mahito and Geto continue their schemes, incarnating one of the Cursed Womb: Death Paintings.
preview – Undead Girl Murder Farce (Andeddo Gaaru Maadaa Farusu)
The end of the 19th century—a vampire’s wife is murdered, and the detective known as the “cage user” is called in to solve the crime. But there’s more to the detective and the curtained birdcage he carries…after all, when solving a case involving a monster, it might just take one to know one.
This evening’s Episode: “Oni Slayer”
In a different 1897, there is a great purge of supernatural creatures in Japan, but some few survive in freak shows and cage fights. The hybrid Oni Slayer Tsugaru Shinuchi is employed by a combat maid name Shizuku and her headstrong mistress Aya Rindo, immortal and seeking to retrieve her body. But they will have to travel to Europe to accomplish their joint goals.
Golden Kamuy
Saichi Sugimoto, a survivor of the battle of 203 Hill in the Russo-Japanese War has become a miner in Hokkaido in order to provide for the widow of his dead comrade, Toraji. He hears a dubious story of hidden Ainu gold stashed by a criminal group, and accidentally finds clues to its location. He decides to search for the gold along with an Ainu girl, Asirpa, who rescues him from Hokkaido’s harsh northern wilderness. Though other parties are also hunting for the gold.
Tonight’s Episode: “Partner in Crime” season 4
Genjiro Tanigaki attempts to quit, but Tsurumi reveals that Inkarmat is pregnant with Tanigaki’s child and instead sends him on a mission to get rid of Sugimoto. As Asirpa’s group dry Heita’s tattooed skin, they examine his labelled gold samples and Shiraishi suggests that if the sample from “Boutarou the Pirate”, and my include a clue to the main horde. In Sapporo, Ishikawa Takuboku writes articles for the local newspapers about a series of brutal killings of prostitutes.
Vinland Saga
Set in Dane-controlled England at the start of the 11th century, and features the Danish invaders of England commonly known as Vikings. The story combines a dramatisation of King Cnut the Great’s historical rise to power with a revenge plot centered on the historical explorer Thorfinn, the son of a murdered ex-warrior.
Tonight’s Episode: “Kings and Swords” season 2
Canute spars with Wulf, captain of his guard, and manages to defeat him, garnering the necessary respect among his men as a warrior. However, Canute is faced with a shortage of revenue to fund his domains of Denmark and England and considers a plan to requisition farmland from wealthy landowners to fund the military. Ketil arrives in Jelling with a generous tribute for Harald, but learns of his death from Thorgil, and offers it to Canute instead.
