Screening on the evening of Saturday, May 11^th 2024

Welcome to the wonderful month of May! Do remember that due to reduced daylight hours and reduced night-time temperatures, JAFWA will now be operating on Winter hours, so come about 4PM and prepare to go home at 9:45PM. This situation will continue through to September.
We expect that members, such as Collin, who have done extra-curricula anime watching of the “Rascal Does Not Dream” anime will go to see animated double feature “Rascal Does Not Dream of a Sister Venturing Out” and “Rascal Does Not Dream of a Knapsack Kid” expected in various cinemas, for a strictly limited season, from Thursday May 9^th.

This week our JAFWA program says hello to a new regular program item, and also finds room for a couple of preview items this week. All this and a mystery item.
– “Oshi no Ko” will screen from episode #2 this week (We showed the movie length first episode back in November, we are not screening it again), involving re-incarnation, revenge and idols. But to recap – Dr. Gorou Amamiya is an avid fan of the idol Ai Hoshino, spurred on partly due to her being the favorite idol of a deceased patient of his named Sarina Tendouji. Gorou is shocked when Ai quietly arrives at his rural hospital 20 weeks pregnant with twins. On her due date, Gorou is killed by Ai’s stalker Ryosuke. He then wakes up and discovers he has been reborn as Ai’s son Aquamarine and lives together with her and his twin sister Ruby. Ruby herself is the reincarnation of Sarina.
– Our first preview episode will be a mecha series where human soldiers defend against an alien mecha invasion, until…..
– Our second preview episode investigates the skill of a master bartender.
– As for the mystery item, this was supposed to be the new series of “Demon Slayer”, but it is not out in Japan yet so we can’t screen it until later this month. Instead another preview item must be watched, out of the many good possibilities out there.

Barring a resurgence of COVID-19 pestilence, these fannish events of interest are scheduled to happen:

Non Non Biyori Nonstop (season 3)

In the countryside small town village of Asahigaoka, a place lacking many of the conveniences that people from the city are accustomed to. The nearest stores are a few miles away and one of the local schools consists of only five students, each of whom is in a different grade of elementary or middle school. Hotaru Ichijo, a fifth grader from Tokyo, transfers into Asahigaoka Branch School and has to adjust to countryside life with her new friends.

This evening’s Episode: “I Made Something Incredible“

Hotaru builds a small robot from a kit as a free study project, and dresses it as Komari riding a dog. The robot escapes and goes on an adventure. Akane shows up at Konomi’s house on the wrong day, and embarrassed by her mistake hides from her with Renge’s help. While teaching Renge to play hospcotch, Konomi and then Natsumi show up and mistaking Akane for a wild animal chase her until she ends up like “a slug that found salt”. Later she crosses paths with Hotaru’s robot that somehow manages to return home. On another day, Hotaru and Komari invite Akane to hang out, and she tells them of her encounter with the “miniature Komari”. Things quickly escalate from there.

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End (Sousou no Furiiren)

For ten years, elf mage Frieren traveled with Himmel the hero, Heiter the priest, and Eisen the dwarf warrior as they quested to destroy the demon king. At the end of their journey, Frieren set out on her own, not quite understanding how differently time flows for her versus her human companions. Reunited after fifty years only to see them wither and die, Frieren begins to ponder the nature of connections at a time when it’s already too late to say goodbye.

This Evening’s Episode: “The Land Where Souls Rest“

In exchange for cleaning a beach, Frieren receives a grimoire written by famous mage Flamme, even though it is fake. The work is finished by New Year when the locals traditionally watch the sunrise. Frieren, a notorious late sleeper, missed the sunrise during her last visit, upsetting her friends. They then visit Eisen’s home, having not seen him in thirty years. He asks for help searching Voll Basin for Flamme’s genuine grimoire as Flamme supposedly found a way to speak to the dead, and he thinks it will be beneficial for Frieren to speak with Himmel one more time.

The Masterful Cat is Depressed Again Today (Dekiru Neko wa Kyou mo Yuuutsu)

One day, a young woman named Saku took in a stray black cat who she later named Yukichi. However, as time went on, Yukichi grew large enough to be mistaken for a bear. Instead of being a threat though, Yukichi spends his time cooking food, doing laundry, and taking care of his owner after she comes home from hard days at work.

This Evening’s Episode: “The Masterful Cat Also Cares About Health“

The masterful cat wakes up early, all to ensure his worthless human works to afford cat food. As such he needs to keep his worthless human fit and healthy. First prevent her from getting overweight, which isn’t that easy. Then we see that Tokyo is a small town, and the dangers of cats and humans eating each other’s food. Saku and Yukichi really are different.

The Apothecary Diaries (Kusuriya no Hitorigoto)

Apothecary Maomao was just out collecting herbs when she was kidnapped by procurers for the Imperial harem, an easy way for unscrupulous people to get money by having “relatives” go work in the Rear Palace. Hiding her skills and knowledge, Maomao hopes to just glide by, earning as little as possible for her kidnappers during her term of service, but such is not to be: when royal infants begin dying, Maomao can’t resist letting people know the cause. This catches the eye of the far-too-handsome Jinshi, who elevates Maomao from laundry maid to poison taster to the Emperor’s favorite concubine. So much for flying under the radar…

Tonight’s Episode: “The Eunuch and the Courtesan“

With Fengming’s execution, all of her assets were confiscated, and family members, relatives and connections were meted varying degrees of corporal punishment. Meanwhile, Maomao is also included in the resulting mass layoffs. Jinshi is torn between keeping her and fearing it might tear them apart even more because he thinks she hated working at the rear palace. Maomao tries negotiating with Jinshi, since she has not fully paid the madam of the Rokushoukan of her debts (and might turn her into a courtesan) but to no avail.

preview – Brave Bang Bravern (“Yuuki Bakuhatsu Baan Bureibaan”)

Lewis Smith and Isami Ao are enemy pilots. Lewis is a pilot for the U.S. armed forces who pilots the armored humanoid weapon Titanostride. In the midst of battle, he meets Isami Ao, the ace pilot for Japan’s Ground Self-Defense Force.

Tonight’s Episode: “Wait’s Over, Isami!“

During a joint American-Japanese military exercise, Isami Ao meets Lewis Smith. Suddenly, alien robots attack Earth; during the battle, a giant talking robot appears from the sky and asks Isami to pilot him. With Isami as his pilot, the robot, calling himself “Bravern”, fights off the invaders.

preview – Where Does the Doomsday Train Go? (“Shuumatsu Train Doko e Iku?”)

In a town in a not-so-ordinary countryside, there is a big and strange occurrence happening to its residents. But a young girl named Shizuru Chikura has a strong desire to see her lost friend again. Shizuru and three other girls board an abandoned train, and they set out to the outside world, where survival is not certain. They’ll discover what awaits them at the last stop of the “Doomsday Train.”

Tonight’s Episode: “I’ll Be Going Now“

Two years after the disastrous launch of an experimental 7G cellular network that warped reality, Japan has been left devastated with civilization reduced to various scattered, isolated settlements. Strange phenomena are now commonplace throughout the country such as the people of the town of Agano being transformed into intelligent animals once they reach the age of 21. Shizuru Chikura, Nadeshiko Hoshi, Reimi Kuga, and Akira Shinonome are four students native to Agano who are left to wonder about their future, knowing they will inevitably turn into animals as well once they come of age. They then find a newspaper showing that their missing classmate Yoka Nakatomi is still alive in Ikebukuro, but have no way of getting there.

Oshi no Ko (“My Favorite Idol” or “Their Idol’s Children”)

Dr Goro Amemiya works as an OB-GYN in a small rural town and is a huge fan of upcoming idol Ai Hoshino. After an unexpected meeting, Goro ends up dying suddenly only to be reborn as one of Ai’s children; a boy named Aquamarine Hoshino (or Aqua for short). He and his twin sister Ruby then grows up as one of show-biz’s biggest secrets.

Tonight’s Episode: “Third Option“

In the twelve years since Ai’s death, Ichigo has fallen out of contact, Ai’s idol group B-Komachi was disbanded, and Miyako closed down Strawberry Production’s idol unit. Ruby has been auditioning to become an idol, unaware that Aqua has been using his acting skills to secretly sabotage her applications and give her false rejection notices.

preview – Bartender – Kami no Glass (“Baatendaa: Kami no Gurasu”)

Genius Bartender, Ryu Sasakura makes the most incredible cocktails anyone has ever tasted. Seeking his “Glass of God”, individuals from all different walks of life visit his bar. With both a compassionate ear and a godly drink, Ryu helps people with their problems.

Tonight’s Episode: “Bartender”

At the bar Eden Hall in Ginza, Ry? Sasakura creates cocktails dubbed “The Glass of the Gods.” Hotel redesigner Kamishima holds deep disregard for bartenders because of an embarrassing mistake he made as a younger man. He is shown the skill of the profession by Ry?, who creates a simple water-mix (mizuwari) by smashing Eden Hall’s signature ice cup. Kamishima’s bar redesign incorporates Ry?’s explanation of the importance of bars. The featured cocktail is the Grasshopper.

Jujutsu Kaisen season 2

Satoru Gojo and Suguru Geto were not always enemies. Long before they had what was supposed to be their final encounter during the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons, the pair were fellow students, rivals, and friends. In another world, they would have been the twin shining stars of Jujutsu Sorcery, but one fateful event destroyed any hope of that ever happening. Turn back the clock to witness the mission that drove them to curse one another beyond even death.

Tonight’s Episode: “Metamorphosis“

Yuji and Todo continue their fight against Mahito. The curse creates several powerful transfigured humans in an attempt to keep Todo busy, but he’s able to easily take them out and regroup with Yuji. Taking influence from Gojo, Mahito activates a 0.2 second Domain Expansion, avoiding Sukuna’s retaliation, while also succeeding in hitting Todo.

Undead Unluck

Fuuko Izumo is known as a woman cursed with “Unluck.” Fuuko brings misfortune to anyone who touches her and the scale is proportional to how long they had physical contact. She’s saved by Andy, a man who cannot die (“Undead”). He hopes to figure out a way to use Fuuko’s misfortune to finally bring him death. The unlikely pair team up to complete missions given to them by the Book of Revelations, but if they or any of the other negators in their union fail, the book can punish humanity.

Tonight’s Episodes: “Tatiana“

Tatiana fights against Rip’s allies, Creed and Fang. Andy informs her that Fuuko was injured by Rip and only has an hour before she bleeds out. Tatiana tells Andy to take Fuuko and Chikara to the top deck. Tatiana decides to fully unleash her ability, Untouchable. Through a series of flashbacks, it is revealed that when Tatiana first got her ability.
