Annual General Meeting before JAFWA Screening

This it!
After announcing it since JAFWA’s return last month, it is finally upon us!

Please be advised that on the 15th of July 2023 the Japanese Animation Fans of Western Australia will be holding it’s 2023 Annual General Meeting.

The meeting will be held at the Collins Street Centre in South Perth from 2:00pm onwards. The regular screening will commence afterwards, and during the dinner break the committee election will be held (assuming we have enough nominees).

We request that all current members attend to meet quorum requirements and to have your voices heard! Please arrive about 10 minutes early.

If you have any matters you would like to have raised at the meeting, please email them through to jafwa.anime@gmail.com. Preferably sufficiently in advance so that we can accurately prepare our response.

Now that the AGM has been completed, we should know if the elections will be held during the Dinner Break, otherwise you are stuck with your current committee – Drew, Glenn, Mark, Sally, Audrey, Greg and Dale. All praise to your overlords!

We apologise for Japan being slow to start the next season of “The Devil is a Part-timer” (on Japanese TV this Thursday), but with luck we will have it for this week. Our next expected anime preview item will be next week.
And we continue on with the other wonderful anime we have in our program. Though this week will be the final episode of “Kaina of the great Snow Sea”.

The Devil is a Part-Timer season 3 (Hataraku Maou-sama)

Having been thwarted in his attempts to conquer Ente Isla, the mighty demon lord Satan escapes through a portal with his general Alsiel… And winds up in modern day Tokyo with very little magical power left. His resources for world domination now consist of a tiny rented apartment and a job at a fast food restaurant. To survive and find a way to return to Ente Isla, Satan adopts the name Sadao Maou and finds that the Hero Emilia is in similar circumstances. And now they have to look after a very special child.

Dr Stone season 3 “New World”

Modern society is lost when a mysterious light leaves everyone petrified in stone. Thousands of years in the future, super genius Senku awakens and begins restoring civilisation with his Kingdom of Science. With the Stone Wars over, the former members of Tsukasa’s Empire of Might join forces with the Kingdom of Science to build a ship capable of sailing across open ocean to seek answers on the mystery of the global petrification. However, before they can begin their voyage Senku and his friends need to find some key resources and push some new scientific advancements to build the type of vessel they need.

This evening’s Episode: “Beautiful Science ”

Ginro attempts to flee the ship from cowardice but when he sees Suika bravely creating a distraction he is guilted into helping tip the lab overboard and reunite with Senku. From their cave base, Senku creates various makeups so that Kohaku is transformed from wild gorilla to cute beauty. Why take 2 chances to be selected for the Madter’s harem, when you can have 3?

Ningen Fushin – aka Apparently, Disillusioned Adventurers Will Save the World (Ningen Fushin no Boukensha-tachi ga Sekai o Sukuu You Desu)

Veteran adventurer Nick’s life is falling apart. Despite all the knowledge and expertise he’s devoted to his adventuring party, his respected leader kicked him out, his girlfriend dumped him, and his teammates shamelessly accused him of embezzlement. Tired, heartbroken, and looking for a drink, Nick chances upon a few kindred spirits who are jaded as he is. Together, these disillusioned adventurers form an unstoppable team out to save their bleak, depressing world.

This evening’s Episode: “The Ultimate Party Is Formed? Survivors!”

Nick decides to name their new team the Survivors. As each team member has trust issues they set up rules that make it impossible to access team wages unless all four agree. However, trust and co-ordination need developing, so before they can conquer dungeons, perhaps some team-building exercises.

Ancient Magus Bride – “The Boy From the West and the Knight of the Blue Storm” (Mahou Tsukai no Yome: Nishi no Shounen to Seiran no Kishi)

Chise Hatori, 15 years old. Lost, without hope, and without family, she is bought for money … not by another person, but by a non-human sorcerer named Elias. Though she hesitates, she begins life anew as his apprentice and future wife. Now grown more confident in her role as a sleigh beggy, there are further adventures before she can go to sorcerer’s college.

Tonight’s OAV Episode: “The Boy From the West and the Knight of the Mountain Haze: Part 1”

The next morning, Elias and Chise head out to find the horse’s master. Meanwhile, Gabriel decides to name the young spirit Evan after a knight in his favorite story, and the both begin exploring the countryside looking for Evan’s home. Elias and Chise come across Titania and Oberon, who point them towards the ancient stone.

Kaina of Great Snow Sea (Ooyuki umi no Kaina )

In a world where land is being swallowed by the encroaching Great Snow Sea, humanity ekes out a harsh life above the Tenmaku that stretches from the roots to the tops of giant Orbital Trees. The story centers around Kaina, a boy who lives above the Tenmaku, and Liliha, the princess of the small country Atland in the Great Snow Sea.

Tonight’s Episodes: “Scale of Hope” finale

The Admiral continues his assault on Atland. However, his troops retreat in fear after witnessing him throwing one of their own ships at the city. Realizing the Admiral has gone mad, Amelothee allows Orinoga to leave to take him down. In Atland, Ririha rescues a trapped civilian, but the map is destroyed by fire in the process. Will anyone get to see the Great Orbital Spire tree?

Demon Slayer (Kimetsu no Yaiba) – season 3

Tanjiro Kamado is a kindhearted and intelligent boy who lives with his family, making money by selling charcoal. Everything changes when his family is attacked and slaughtered by demons (oni). Tanjiro and his sister Nezuko are the sole survivors of the incident. Nezuko has now become a demon, but still surprisingly shows signs of human emotion and thought. Tanjiro becomes a demon slayer to help his sister turn human again and to prevent the same tragedy that happened to him and his sister, from happening to others.

Tonight’s Episode: “Thank You, Tokito ” Swordsmith Village arc

Though Mist Kashira Tokito beheads the fish demon, it does not die until he slashes the vase on its back. When Kotetsu begs him to save Hotaru and fellow swordsmith Kozo Kanamori. Meanwhile Tanjiro realizes that each of the four demons he faces represents an emotion: joy (Urogi), anger (Sekido), pleasure (Karaku), and sorrow (Aizetsu). Genya confuses Sekido and Aizetsu with his unusual durability against fatal wounds while Nezuko burns Karaku with her blood.

Jujutsu Kaisen

Negative human emotions – regret, bitterness, shame – are the source of all curses that infest the world and hide in everyday life, leading to death in the worst cases. Yuji Itadori, a particularly strong young man, attempts to save a friend from a curse, only to wind up consuming the special grade curse of Ryoumen Sukuna’s finger. Only a curse can eliminate another curse, and Yuji’s career as a cursed person who must exorcise curses has now begin.

Tonight’s Episode “Jujutsu Koshien”

Hanami manages to barely survive Gojo’s attack. Mahito reveals the attack was a ruse to draw Gojo’s attention away from the Tokyo high school, where Mahito killed multiple sorcerers and stole six fingers and three Special Grade “Curse Wombs.” Gojo continues the Exchange Event. Instead of individual battles, he has them compete in a baseball game, allowing the students some down time.

In/Spectre season 2 (Kyokou Suiri)

When she was still just a girl, Kotoko was kidnapped by yokai. These spirits made her into a powerful intermediary between the spirit and human worlds, but this power came at a price: an eye and a leg. Now, years later, she watches out for dangerous yokai while developing feelings for a young man named Kuro, who is also special: an incident with a yokai has given him healing powers. He’s surprised when Kotoko asks him to team up to handle renegade yokai, preserving the thin line between reality and the supernatural.

This evening’s Episodes: “The Yuki-Onna’s Dilemma”

A mountain climber is pushed off a high ledge and left for dead. However the local Yuki-Onna (Snow Woman) spirit deigns to save his life, for a price. Eleven years later he meets her again, and they start a relationship. But when she is his only alibi in a murder investigation, it is time for the Goddess of Wisdom to intervene.

Golden Kamuy

Saichi Sugimoto, a survivor of the battle of 203 Hill in the Russo-Japanese War has become a miner in Hokkaido in order to provide for the widow of his dead comrade, Toraji. He hears a dubious story of hidden Ainu gold stashed by a criminal group, and accidentally finds clues to its location. He decides to search for the gold along with an Ainu girl, Asirpa, who rescues him from Hokkaido’s harsh northern wilderness. Though other parties are also hunting for the gold.

Tonight’s Episode: “Brown Bear Man” season 4

Asirpa’s group relax with the local Ainu and plan to get the tattoed skins while Hijikata and Tsurumi are preoccupied with fighting each other. While talking, they learn that there is a reward for catching a legendary wankamuy, a bear that has killed someone. While out hunting, Sugimoto and Asirpa save the man called Heita who then tells them the best method to search for gold, but also that he has made more money from panning for “white”, specks of platinum worth as much as gold.

Vinland Saga

Set in Dane-controlled England at the start of the 11th century, and features the Danish invaders of England commonly known as Vikings. The story combines a dramatisation of King Cnut the Great’s historical rise to power with a revenge plot centered on the historical explorer Thorfinn, the son of a murdered ex-warrior.

Tonight’s Episode: “The Cursed Head” season 2

Three years after they started clearing their allotted land, Einar and Thorfinn have finished. They can now potentially buy their freedom, causing them to contemplate their futures as free men. On his way to the palace in Jelling to visit King Harald, Ketil surprisingly offers the pair their freedom if they can achieve a little more. Meanwhile, Canute arrives at Jelling to visit his ailing brother Harald.
