JAFWA operating in Winter hours! Program starts at 4:15PM!

We enter the first screening of what is officially Winter, with JAFWA continuing our program of regular series of anime goodness, to warm the otaku soul. This week we have our regular program slightly interrupted in order to fit in a preview episode, and you may lose sleep if you miss watching this. It features the slice-of-life sub-genre Iyashikei, portraying characters living out peaceful lives in calming environments, and is intended to have a healing effect on the audience.

And then in July it will be time for the AGM and JAFWA elections, with nominations opening in June. Isn’t it time you stepped up and participated? Consider nominating yourself this month, if you are a fiully signed up JAFWA members, for the last 3 months.

It may be of interest to our members, but Luna Leederville cinemas has introduced Monday Double Features, which includes a couple of Mondays with anime. (Monday April 17 was “Howl’s Moving Castle” and “Princess Mononoke”, June 12 is “Akira” and “Demon Slayer: Mugen Train”)

Do It Yourself (Yofukashi no Uta)

Serufu Yua (pronounced “yourself”) is a laid back first year high-school student, very accident-prone and is known for having a perfect attendance record at the nurse’s office. She fails to get into Yuyu Girls’ Vocational High School for technology with her best friend Miku Suride, instead getting into the lower class Gatagata Girls’ High School. But there is a student club that may catch her attention.

This evening’s Episodes: “‘DIY’ Means Do It Yourself!”

With Miku officially brought on as an external member of the DIY Club, the girls finally begin work on their treehouse with help from Rei’s parents. As the treehouse nears completion, the girls find they don’t have enough material to finish the roof.

Dr Stone season 3 “New World”

Modern society is lost when a mysterious light leaves everyone petrified in stone. Thousands of years in the future, super genius Senku awakens and begins restoring civilisation with his Kingdom of Science. With the Stone Wars over, the former members of Tsukasa’s Empire of Might join forces with the Kingdom of Science to build a ship capable of sailing across open ocean to seek answers on the mystery of the global petrification. However, before they can begin their voyage Senku and his friends need to find some key resources and push some new scientific advancements to build the type of vessel they need.

This evening’s Episode: “Science Vessel Perseus ”

Even with Kaseki’s skills the ship proves impossible to assemble accurately. Ryusui recreates a scale model of a ship, allowing Senku to use a Pantograph to accurately copy the ship pieces to the accurate size and shapes. Ship construction begins running smoothly but the engine requires Senku’s absolute focus during its construction as a single mistake could cause an explosion.

Bocchi the Rock

Extremely anxious and socially awkward Hitori Gotou longs to become a rock musician in spite of her struggles, whilst fulfilling her desires to one day make friends. She is even given a chance to do so after she is taken in by Nijika Ijichi to become a member of the newly formed Kessoku Band.

This evening’s Episode: “After Dark”

Bocchi hears that her school is accepting bands to play at their upcoming cultural festival, but can’t bring herself to actually turn in the application form for Kessoku Band. Ikuyo submits the form for her, but later feels guilty after seeing Bocchi’s reaction. Kikuri later shows up at STARRY and invites Kessoku Band to see her band “SICK HACK” perform live at a Shinjuku club.

preview – Insomniacs After School (Kimi wa Houkago Insomunia)

In the small city of Nanao, insomniac Ganta Nakami tries to catch a nap in his school’s abandoned astronomical observatory. There he stumbles upon a sociable and carefree girl named Isaki Magari who has the same problem. The two form an awkward friendship and reestablish their school’s defunct astronomy club.

This evening’s Episode: “Capella -The Charioteer-”

An inability to sleep causes Nakami Ganta to despair. But then a school ghost tale about the old astronomy club premises during culture festival prep leads to the pefect place to take a peaceful nap. Unfortunately somebody else has had the same idea. A busted lock forces them to come to an accommodation. Thus the Nightly Fun Society begins.

retro item – Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki second series

Tenchi Masaki was a normal 17-year-old boy until the day he accidentally releases the space pirate, Ryoko, from a cave she was sealed in 700 years ago as the people thought she was a demon. In a series of events, four other alien girls show up at the Masaki household as Tenchi learns much of his heritage he never knew about and deal with five alien girls who each have some sort of romantic interest in him.

Tonight’s episode: “The Advent of the Goddess ”

The dastardly Dr. Clay, acting on the orders of the mysterious Lady Tokimi, sends his robotic slave Zero down to earth to capture Washu. Zero transforms into an exact duplicate of Ryoko to infiltrate the Masaki household.

Kaina of Great Snow Sea (Ooyuki umi no Kaina )

In a world where land is being swallowed by the encroaching Great Snow Sea, humanity ekes out a harsh life above the Tenmaku that stretches from the roots to the tops of giant Orbital Trees. The story centers around Kaina, a boy who lives above the Tenmaku, and Liliha, the princess of the small country Atland in the Great Snow Sea.

Tonight’s Episodes: “Lost at Sea”

The Brotherhood reveal that they had secretly built a raft which Kaina and the others can use to escape. While the Brotherhood distracts the guards, Kaina, Ririha and Yaona escape Valghia on the raft, promising to find the Great Orbital Spire Tree. The trio sail through the night, and despite lacking the means to effectively navigate at night, they miraculously are able to find their way back to Atland in the morning.

Jujutsu Kaisen

Negative human emotions – regret, bitterness, shame – are the source of all curses that infest the world and hide in everyday life, leading to death in the worst cases. Yuji Itadori, a particularly strong young man, attempts to save a friend from a curse, only to wind up consuming the special grade curse of Ryoumen Sukuna’s finger. Only a curse can eliminate another curse, and Yuji’s career as a cursed person who must exorcise curses has now begin.

Tonight’s Episode “Sage”

Kasumi is eliminated after Toge calls her and commands her to sleep over the phone. Toge is disturbed by an ominous Special-Grade Cursed Spirit, whose appearance is not part of the Exchange Event. Megumi and Noritoshi are battling when they see Toge fleeing; he commands them to run but the Special-Grade blocks them from the exit.

Tokyo Revengers

Watching the news, Takemichi Hanagaki learns that his girlfriend from way back in middle school, Hinata Tachibana, has died. The only girlfriend he ever had was just killed by a villainous group known as the Tokyo Manji Gang. He lives in a crappy apartment with thin walls, and his younger boss treats him like an idiot. At the height of his rock-bottom life, he suddenly time-leaps twelve years back to his middle school days. To save Hinata, and change the life he spent running away, hopeless part-timer Takemichi must aim for the top of Kanto’s most sinister delinquent gang.

Tonight’s Episode: “One for all”

Mikey recalls on June 19, 2003, Baji created the Tokyo Manji Gang to protect Kazutora from the Black Dragons and realizes that Baji wanted him to forgive Kazutora. Afterwards, the Tokyo Manji Gang and Valhalla disperse upon the arrival of the police, but Kazutora apologizes to Mikey and stays behind with Baji’s body.

Golden Kamuy

Saichi Sugimoto, a survivor of the battle of 203 Hill in the Russo-Japanese War has become a miner in Hokkaido in order to provide for the widow of his dead comrade, Toraji. He hears a dubious story of hidden Ainu gold stashed by a criminal group, and accidentally finds clues to its location. He decides to search for the gold along with an Ainu girl, Asirpa, who rescues him from Hokkaido’s harsh northern wilderness. Though other parties are also hunting for the gold.

Tonight’s Episode: “Cinematograph” season 4

In Toyohara, Sugimoto receives word by telegram that Tsurumi is on his way to Karafuto via Noboribetsu and is planning to meet them on Oodomari in two weeks. While Sugimoto and Asirpa out hunting, they are watched by Tsukishima accompanied by a Russian. Meanwhile, a cinematographer Katsuro Inaba and his operator Gariel, are filming Karafuto Ainu for Lumière when they see Asirpa create a ritual fire without matches and he asks to film it.

Vinland Saga

Set in Dane-controlled England at the start of the 11th century, and features the Danish invaders of England commonly known as Vikings. The story combines a dramatisation of King Cnut the Great’s historical rise to power with a revenge plot centered on the historical explorer Thorfinn, the son of a murdered ex-warrior.

Tonight’s Episode: “I Want a Horse” / “We Need a Horse” season 2

Einar and Thorfinn continue their back-breaking work to clear their plot of land and realize that they need a horse to more efficiently clear the stumps and plow the land. Their requests for a horse are rejected by the retainers, however Sverkel, an old farmer, offers to loan them one, but in exchange they have to do chores around his farm.
