JAFWA still operating in Winter hours! Program starts at 4:15PM!

Hello Everybody, such a pleasure to see so many new faces.
Though I think I must apologise. When we screened “City Hunter” last week, we had forgotten how much society’s values had changed in 3 decades. It was inappropriate of us to put it on so early in the night. Sorry. This week we will put this retro anime from before the fall of the Soviet Union and screen it after the Dinner break.
Also, an Advisory. This week’s episode of “Golden Kamuy”, amongst the other violence contains a scene where two perverts weaponise a recreational procreative activity. Though somewhat significant to the story, it has an icky factor not suitable for the young and pure of heart.

This week will also preview an episode of anime from Japan – a sort of reverse isekai where a necromantic fantasy character arrives on an Earth like ours.

There is currently a Winter Sale at CrunchyRoll (formerly Madman), until Aug 20. Order through JAFWA to benefit from out bulk ordering to get free postage.

We are trying to fill the program for the final screening of 2023 in December, What do you want to see?

Looking for volunteers to help with some extra-curricular activities for JAFWA. First, in October there is a fund-raising sausage sizzle at Bunnings Cannington. Then JAFWA is doing the anime screening at Kai-Con 2023.

Last week asking what should we call our new computer? Traditionally the JAFWA computer, with its small form factor is known as “chibi“, though for official purposes that only addressed JAFWA’s first dedicated computer. The one that broke down in July 2023 since being in service from 2016, was officially “Shin-chibi“. So what do we call this even smaller form factor computer? Lindsay has suggested “micro-chibi“, while I am partial to “chibi-chibi“. Please provide worthwhile suggestion for the official name (“Chibi McChibi Chibiface”, and variants thereof, is only worth getting hurt).

Dale’s Suggestive Remarks

Happily we discover that someone has placed another entry in our suggestion box, from Saturday 12th of August.
The Suggestion is anonymous, to whom I shall address as “Mysterious Correspondent ‘S'”, and apparently has to do with our request for programming for our end of year screening:

• My hero academia
• demon slayer
• Spy family

Some fine suggestions there Mysterious Correspondent ‘S’. Unfortunately, we are looking for what we call an irregular program, thus any current regular items would not fit in. We are currently screening “Demon Slayer”, and will be resuming “Spy x Family” sometime in October. Unless you had a very specific episode of either of these shows in mind, your beloved JAFWA committee will have to put the priority of these requests way down.
We prefer if you tried suggesting a show that hasn’t been on JAFWA recently – as an example the first episode of “Cells at Work”.

However, your other suggestion “My Hero Academia” is a much better possibility. Several years ago, the JAFWA committee was trying to decide between two anime as to which one would fill a preview slot in the JAFWA program. The Committee’s deliberations finally chose “One Punch Man” over “My Hero Academia” by something like half a vote. We have always wondered if we made the right choice.
But if we do choose to screen an episode of “My Hero Academia” in the December program, which episode would you recommend Mysterious Correspondent ‘S’?

Barring a resurgence of COVID-19 pestilence, these fannish events of interest are scheduled to happen:

The Devil is a Part-Timer season 3 (Hataraku Maou-sama)

Having been thwarted in his attempts to conquer Ente Isla, the mighty demon lord Satan escapes through a portal with his general Alsiel… And winds up in modern day Tokyo with very little magical power left. His resources for world domination now consist of a tiny rented apartment and a job at a fast food restaurant. To survive and find a way to return to Ente Isla, Satan adopts the name Sadao Maou and finds that the Hero Emilia is in similar circumstances. And now they have to look after a very special child.

This evening’s Episode: “The Hero Says Goodbye for a Time”

A surprise announcement – Emilia is going to be staying at her parent’s place on Enta Isla for a while. The days stretch until her return, except she doesn’t. The Demon King is going to get his moped licence.

Ningen Fushin – aka Apparently, Disillusioned Adventurers Will Save the World (Ningen Fushin no Boukensha-tachi ga Sekai o Sukuu You Desu)

Veteran adventurer Nick’s life is falling apart. Despite all the knowledge and expertise he’s devoted to his adventuring party, his respected leader kicked him out, his girlfriend dumped him, and his teammates shamelessly accused him of embezzlement. Tired, heartbroken, and looking for a drink, Nick chances upon a few kindred spirits who are jaded as he is. Together, these disillusioned adventurers form an unstoppable team out to save their bleak, depressing world.

This evening’s Episode: “A Meeting with the Iron Tigers”

The Survivors all dream of the lives they had before. In particular, Tiana dreams of her academy instructor whose career she accidentally ruined through her own ambition, and Nick dreams of his ex, Claudine. While at a restaurant with Curran and Kizuna Nick spots Claudine, a known con artist, try to take a young man’s money using the same con she once used on Nick. Claudine later provokes a fight between Nick and her party leader Leon, leader of the Iron Tigers.

Ancient Magus Bride season 2 (Mahou Tsukai no Yome)

Chise Hatori, 15 years old. Lost, without hope, and without family, she is bought for money … not by another person, but by a non-human sorcerer named Elias. Though she hesitates, she begins life anew as his apprentice and future wife. Now grown more confident in her role as a sleigh beggy, Chise was able to accept Elias and herself, if not necessarily everything about her situation. After Cartaphilus fell back into a slumber that would not last forever, Chise was able to go back to her regular life. Then she receives an invitation from a mutual aid organization for mages called the College.

Tonight’s Episode: “Birds of a feather flock together. II”

Rian is disappointed when Ruth and Will-o-the-Wisp confirm he has no magical aptitude. Narcisse reports to vice-principal Gregory, who is concerned Chise and several other students will upset the balance of power within the college. Adolf contacts Lindel to find out if Elias is dangerous; Lindel decides to share how Elias earned the title Pilum Muralis (Spear Wall).

retro item – City Hunter

Ryo Saeba is a “sweeper” who is always found chasing beautiful girls and a private detective who works to rid Tokyo of crime, along with his associate or partner, Hideyuki Makimura. Their “City Hunter” business is an underground jack-of-all-trades operation, contacted by writing the letters “XYZ” on a blackboard at Shinjuku Station.

Tonight’s episode: “Please Kill Me: Crosshairs Don’t Become a Pretty Girl ”

A scientist dies: his beautiful daughter helped him develop a deadly bacteria. Arms dealers are after her. A case for City Hunter.

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury (Kidou Senshi Gandamu: Suisei no Majo)

An era when a multitude of corporations have entered space and built a huge economic system. A lone girl from the remote planet Mercury transfers to the Asticassia School of Technology, run by the Beneritt Group which dominates the mobile suit industry. Her name is Suletta Mercury. With a scarlet light burning in her pure heart, this girl walks step by step through a new world.

Tonight’s Episode: “Prologue ”

In the far future, humanity has developed GUND technology, allowing them to operate machines with their minds alone, revolutionising prosthetics. However, when the technology’s developers, the Vanadis Institute, are acquired by arms developer Ochs Earth, they are forced to start developing mobile suits, codenamed GUND-ARMs; or “Gundams”. The weapons industry’s self-regulator decides to crack down on Gundams.

Demon Slayer (Kimetsu no Yaiba) – season 3

Tanjiro Kamado is a kindhearted and intelligent boy who lives with his family, making money by selling charcoal. Everything changes when his family is attacked and slaughtered by demons (oni). Tanjiro and his sister Nezuko are the sole survivors of the incident. Nezuko has now become a demon, but still surprisingly shows signs of human emotion and thought. Tanjiro becomes a demon slayer to help his sister turn human again and to prevent the same tragedy that happened to him and his sister, from happening to others.

Tonight’s Episode: “The Mu in Muichiro ” Swordsmith Village arc

Though he escapes the water pot, Muichiro grows weak and numb from the needles’ poison. Seeing Kotetsu about to be attacked and unable to move, his life flashes before his eyes and he regains his memories. The traumatic memories cause marks to appear on his face, augmenting his speed and strength.

Jujutsu Kaisen season 2

Satoru Gojo and Suguru Geto were not always enemies. Long before they had what was supposed to be their final encounter during the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons, the pair were fellow students, rivals, and friends. In another world, they would have been the twin shining stars of Jujutsu Sorcery, but one fateful event destroyed any hope of that ever happening. Turn back the clock to witness the mission that drove them to curse one another beyond even death.

Tonight’s Episode “Hidden Inventory 2” season 2

Gojo and Geto easily dispose of the Q attackers, and after she wakes up from her unconsciousness, are formally introduced to Riko and her maid Misato Kuroi. Despite intending to take her to Jujutsu High for safety, Riko goes to school for the day, with Tengen ordering Gojo and Geto to follow her wishes, as they are aware even though she is content with her fate, she will no longer have a normal life once she is assimilated with Tengen.

preview – Dead Mount Death Play ( Deddomaunto Desupurei)

A powerful necromancer known as the Corpse God uses a unique magic skill escape death and to reincarnate themself into another world, and ends up in modern-day Shinjuku, in the body of a boy named Polka Shinoyama who has just had his throat slit by an assassin. Thinking that this new world could provide the peaceful life he desired in the last one, the Corpse God takes on Polka’s identity, and soon ingratiates himself with the Shinjuku underworld under a woman named Clarissa and her underlings.

This evening’s Episode: “The Reincarnation”

Shagrua Lugrid, the “Calamity Crusher,” leads a band of heroes into the lair of the evil necromancer known as the Corpse God for a final showdown to bring peace to the land. However, just as Shagrua lands the final blow, the Corpse God casts a strange new magic spell. In modern-day Shinjuku, in Tokyo, Japan, a white-haired boy with a cut throat wakes up in an alleyway and stumbles out onto the street, where he slowly regains his memories, and is tracked down by an eccentric woman with a crowbar.

Golden Kamuy

Saichi Sugimoto, a survivor of the battle of 203 Hill in the Russo-Japanese War has become a miner in Hokkaido in order to provide for the widow of his dead comrade, Toraji. He hears a dubious story of hidden Ainu gold stashed by a criminal group, and accidentally finds clues to its location. He decides to search for the gold along with an Ainu girl, Asirpa, who rescues him from Hokkaido’s harsh northern wilderness. Though other parties are also hunting for the gold.

Tonight’s Episode: “Discharge” season 4

After seeing the contents of Heita’s tobacco case, Botaro the Pirate realizes that Sugimoto is also after the Ainu gold. During a struggle they are both thrown overboard and Botaro tries to drown Sugimoto. In Sapporo, Usami uses an unconventional method to track the prostitute killer. The killer is following exactly the pattern as the notorious Jack the Ripper. Meanwhile, a newspaper article about children disappearing, points to the escaped prisoner Keiji Ueji heading towards Sapporo.

Vinland Saga

Set in Dane-controlled England at the start of the 11th century, and features the Danish invaders of England commonly known as Vikings. The story combines a dramatisation of King Cnut the Great’s historical rise to power with a revenge plot centered on the historical explorer Thorfinn, the son of a murdered ex-warrior.

Tonight’s Episode: “Freedom” season 2

Gardar asks Arnheid to take their son, Hjalti, and leave with him, but he is confronted by Snake, Fox, and Badger. Snake confronts Gardar, and although Gardar is an accomplished swordsman Snake knocks him out so he can be taken alive for judgement. Einar wants to help Gardar, but Snake warns Einar and Thorfinn not to get involved.
