Screening on Saturday 19^th October 2019

Below is the program for the evening of Saturday October 19^th, 2019.

Spring is with us, and we are wondering if we need to take action against our old enemy, The Sun. ie block the skylight.
This week we will screen a couple of preview items to display what other anime Japan is producing this season. One is slice of life Japanese High-School anime that will appeal to gaming nerds, and the other is a remake of a rather violent samurai series, which will replace “Dororo” this week only – find out how they escape the sharks next week.

On December 14^th we will have our end of year marathon screening, before we take a break until January, and your Suggestions are welcome. The JAFWA committee has already scheduled room for “Akira”, and we have received a request for the movie “Millenium Actress”, as well as the “Girls und Panzer” movie, and something “Gundam”. Any other requests/suggestions?
Be aware, we also intend to run an auction on behalf of our members. Tell us what you want us to auction of yours, preferably well in advance, so we can schedule enough time into the program, as well as inform people so that they can bring plenty of money to bid. Already, a couple of expensive “Attack on Titan” figures have been proffered.

A reminder that JAFWA member Dale is offering to do a bulk import order of Japanese calendars, in order to reduce shipping costs. The 2020 calendars have passed their pre-order discount period, and Dale can get titles as seen here or here, possibly with more to come as the publishing companies confirm their schedules. Is anyone else interested in ordering Japanese calendars via Dale?

Fruits Basket (2019 remake)

After a family tragedy turns her life upside down, plucky high schooler Tohru Honda takes matters into her own hands and moves out into a tent. Unfortunately for her, she pitches her new home on private land belonging to the mysterious Sohma clan, and it isn’t long before the owners discover her secret. But, as Tohru quickly finds out when the family offers to take her in, the Sohmas have a secret of their own–when touched by the opposite sex, they turn into the animals of the Chinese Zodiac.

This evening’s Episode: “Perhaps We Should Invite Ourselves Over”

Tohru happily returns to the Sohma household, and proceeds with life, including assisting at the school festival. Where some other cursed/blessed/possessed members of the Sohma family visit. After the festival ends, Tohru’s best friends Arisa and Saki confront her about their suspicions of her close relationship with Yuki and Kyo, which Tohru inadvertently reveals that she is living with them. To confirm for themselves, Arisa and Saki invite themselves to a sleepover at the Sohmas’ house.

Isekai Quartet

One day, a magic button suddenly appears. The protagonists in KonoSuba, Overlord, Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World, and The Saga of Tanya the Evil all press the button and move to a parallel world — another brand new isekai — where a new story featuring high school life begins.

This evening’s Episodes: “Carry Out! Class Rep ” and “Prepare! Field Trip ”

Emilia lands in bed, exhausted from her work as Class Rep. She enjoys that everyone in her new world is unique and has no prejudice at her for being a half-elf. The other mixed up isekai characters begins to interact and appreciate each other. Though certain secrets may not be revealed.
Then it is declared that the class will be going on a field trip to the beach. Ainz proposes to the class that they all do something together for their beach field trip. But issues of swimsuits and gender will raise distractions.

preview item – Houkago Saikoro Club (After School Dice Club)

Aya moves and starts to attend an all-girls high school in Kyoto. Her first friend is her reserved classmate Miki. After school one day, the committee chairwoman Midori takes them both to an analogue game specialty shop called “Saikoro Club” (Dice Club). There, they start playing a German board game without thinking. Thus begins Aya and Miki’s search for fun through the world of analogue games.

Tonight’s Episode: “A New World ”

Miki is in high-school, but can’t seem to find any “fun” or enjoyment. Aya seems to have too much excitement. Somehow they become friends. After getting lost, they spot class-rep Midori acting suspiciously and follow her. To the Saikoro Club, and a world beyond their imagining. Can they survive the marketplace of Marrakesh?

Kanata no Astra (Astra: Lost in Space)

In the year 2063, travelling through space has become commonplace. Eight students from Caird High School, along with one child, set out for a school camp on a nearby planet. However, the students are then mysteriously transported 5,000 light years away from home, with no way to call for help. Aboard an abandoned spaceship they call the Astra, these nine students slowly try to make their way back and figure out why they were transported in the first place.

This evening’s Episode: “Secret ”

Ulgar has pulled a gun on Luca, explaining to everybody that he believes his older brother was murdered by Marco for investigating his corruption. As revenge, he seeks to kill Luca, who is Marco’s eldest son and apparent heir. Though Luca reveals a strange defence. However, the reason that the students could not find ground animals is about to inundate them.

Mob Psycho 100

Shigeo Kageyama’s nickname is “Mob”. A slang term for a background character, someone who doesn’t stand out. In truth he is an incredibly powerful psychic who has suppressed his emotions in order to avoid causing a catastrophe. Mob would like nothing better than to live a normal life and have feelings just like anyone else, but with his incredible psychic powers there’s no telling what might happen if he did.

Tonight’s Episode: “Discord -To Become One- ”

After the incident at the Black Vinegar Middle School, the whole town hears rumors pointing to Mob’s abilities and his fight with Teru. Mob’s brother Ritsu Kageyama is followed around by various people interested in him and his brother’s powers. The leader of the Telepathy Club, Tome Kurata, takes an interest in the psychic fight and tries to get Mob to identify other Espers in public.

Rising of the Shield Hero (Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari)

Naofumi Iwatani was summoned into a parallel world along with three other people to become the world’s Heroes. Each of the heroes were respectively equipped with their own legendary equipment when summoned. Naofumi happened to receive the Legendary Shield, the sole defensive equipment, while the others received weapons capable of attacking. Unlike the other heroes who are fully supported by the kingdom and gain several strong allies each, Naofumi’s luck turns to the worse, shunned by everyone from the King to peasants, Naofumi is forced to train as a hero alone while working to make ends meet acquiring only the most pitiful of followers. As he little by little gain the trust and gratitude of the people with their heroic actions, Naofumi and his companions work hard to fulfill their mission as saviors of the world, while unraveling its deepest secrets.

Tonight’s Episode: “Battle of Good and Evil ”

The Four Heroes have no success in breaking through Balmus’ Cathedral Spell and Naofumi finds his Rage Shield’s curse effect is greatly nullified within The Cathedral. Pope Balmus endangers the lives of his followers by siphoning more mana from them to charge a larger attack. In order to block it, Naofumi takes the risk of releasing the Dragon Soul in his Rage Shield.

Yakusoku no Neverland (The Promised Neverland)

Emma is an 11-year-old orphan living in Grace Field House, a small orphanage housing her and her 37 siblings. Life had never been better; with food that tasted gourmet, plush beds, snow-white uniforms, and the love of their “Mother” (the caretaker) Isabella, as well the litany of daily exams that Emma always aced with her two best friends Ray and Norman. The orphans are basically allowed to do whatever they want, except to venture out of the compounds or the gate that connects the house to the outside world. Then she finds out the truth. Determined to break out of Grace Field House, Norman and Emma partner up with Ray to peel away at the façade of the farm and find a way to escape with all their other siblings.

Tonight’s Episode: “140146 ”

On the evening before Ray’s departure, Emma reveals she has never given up the idea of escape. While Isabella closely watched her and Ray, Don and Gilda continue preparing for their escape. Ray proposes they set the house on fire that night as a distraction.

Manji is a crass, violent samurai with a special ability: he cannot die. Cursed with immortality by the nun Yobikuni as punishment for his ruthless deeds, he has grown weary of his ageless life. Rin Asano seeks to avenge her parents, who were killed by the Ittou-ryuu, a cadre of master swordsmen led by Anotsu Kagehisa.

Tonight’s Episode: “Act One – Meeting ”

As Rin recounts her tragic demise of her family’s dojo by Ittou-ryuu, the 800 year old Yaobikuni advises her to get a powerful bodyguard, and sends her to Manji. Finding him and recruiting him will be difficult, the only clue Rin has is that one of the perverted Ittou-ryuu members keeps sending her love letters.

Attack On Titan (Shingeki ni Kyojin) season 3 part 2

Eren and his companions in the 104th are assigned to the newly-formed Levi Squad, whose assignment is to keep Eren and Historia safe given Eren’s newly-discovered power and Historia’s knowledge and pedigree. Levi and Erwin have good reason to be concerned, because the priest of the Church that Hange had hidden away was found tortured to death, making it clear that the Military Police are involved with the cover-up. Things get more harrowing when the MPs make a move on Erwin and the Levi Squad narrowly avoids capture.

Tonight’s Episode: “The Basement ”

Armin has a nightmare of a weeping Colossal Titan, waking up with no memory of the events following Bertholdt’s transformation. The eight remaining members of the Survey Corps huddle around him to explain their situation, Armin struggling with Levi’s decision to bring him back instead of Erwin. Hange, Levi, Eren and Mikasa proceed into Shiganshina to investigate the basement of what remained of Eren’s home, and the secrets that Eren’s father left in the basement.

Jojo no Kimyou na Bouken – Ougen no Kaze (Jojo’s Bizzare Adventure – Golden Wind)

Set in 2001, two years after the events of Diamond is Unbreakable, Koichi Hirose is sent to Italy and tasked by Jotaro Kujo to search for Giorno Giovanna, an aspiring mafia gangster who is a son of Dio Brando. But as Dio possessed the body of Jonathan Joestar at time of his conception, Giorno is technically a Joestar and takes more after them than the father he never knew. The series follows Giorno as he joins the mafia organization Passione, moving up through its ranks with the intention of becoming its boss to improve life in Italy.

Tonight’s Episode: “Green Day and Oasis, Part 3 ”

Because of his Stand’s superior speed, Secco severely injures Bucciarati, who decides to flee. Secco then receives a final voice message from Cioccolata, who informs him that Bucciarati’s group intend to meet someone in the Colosseum who has a plan to beat the boss. The mysterious man is one one of Kujo Jotaro’s companions from the “Stardust Crusaders” arc.
