Screening on the evening of Saturday, May 18th 2024

A pleasure to see so many people returning to JAFWA last week. And nobody had problems with JAFWA operating on Winter hours. Just a reminder to continue coming about 4PM with preparations to go home at 9:45PM. This situation will continue through to September.

A fixture of the Perth fandom scene for many years, and a long-time supporter of JAFWA, we are saddened by the news that Tokyo Underground is closing. Their final day of trading is going to be June 30th, and they have already begun marking down prices for the final sale.

This week our JAFWA program, if everything goes to schedule, will say hello to a new regular program item, and also finds room for a couple of preview items this week. Whether these preview items will reach the approval rating of “Bartender” from last week is something you will have to come along to see and appreciate.

  • If all goes according to schedule the the fourth and final series of “Demon Slayer” will begin screening this week, as we enter the Hashira Training story arc.
  • Our first preview episode will be a slice of life, if humans and yokai co-existed peacefully in village life.
  • Our second preview episode is a remake of an old favourite series once shown many years ago, as a merchant acquires a traveling companion that only appears human when it suits her.

Non Non Biyori Nonstop (season 3)

In the countryside small town village of Asahigaoka, a place lacking many of the conveniences that people from the city are accustomed to. The nearest stores are a few miles away and one of the local schools consists of only five students, each of whom is in a different grade of elementary or middle school. Hotaru Ichijo, a fifth grader from Tokyo, transfers into Asahigaoka Branch School and has to adjust to countryside life with her new friends.

This evening’s Episode: “We All Went Camping Together“

Wednesday, August 25th, Kazuho Miyauchi (Renge’s older sister & homeroom teacher) brings the whole class camping. Come nightfall, Kazuho falls asleep after drinking too much and Natsumi goes hunting for rhinoceros beetles with Renge. However Kazuho wakes up and, still very much drunk, goes looking for the girls and ends up scaring the beejesus out of Komari. And there is still Summer homework to be completed.

preview – Tonari no Youkai-san (“The Youkai Next to Me”)

Tonari no Yokai

In a version of Earth where youkai, humans and gods live together, a twenty-year-old cat named Buchio, who lives in a rural village in Japan, evolves into a Nekomata. Buchio sets out to learn more from his youkai peers about his evolution. Meanwhile, Mu-chan, who is a member of the human family who takes care of Buchio, becomes curious about their neighbour Jiro, a crow Tengu who performs ritual Shinto duties.

This Evening’s Episode: “Episode 1“

The family cast is reborn as a shy twin-tailed nekomata in the village of Fuchigamori. This is the start of Buchio’s new life, but he needs to learn more about what it is to be a y?kai, but fortunately therer are many y?kai neighbours to ask about this transformational process. But young Mustumi is worried about her father who has disappeared. Will the Void take her as well?

The Masterful Cat is Depressed Again Today (Dekiru Neko wa Kyou mo Yuuutsu)

One day, a young woman named Saku took in a stray black cat who she later named Yukichi. However, as time went on, Yukichi grew large enough to be mistaken for a bear. Instead of being a threat though, Yukichi spends his time cooking food, doing laundry, and taking care of his owner after she comes home from hard days at work.

This Evening’s Episode: “The Masterful Cat Runs Away from Home?“

Thanks to Yukichi, Saku never has to worry about the Monday Blues. But Yukichi also has a few private habits, and one Sunday he leaves home without his purse, and Saku panics. Still, it is not like the time he ran away from home as a kitten.

The Apothecary Diaries (Kusuriya no Hitorigoto)

Apothecary Maomao was just out collecting herbs when she was kidnapped by procurers for the Imperial harem, an easy way for unscrupulous people to get money by having “relatives” go work in the Rear Palace. Hiding her skills and knowledge, Maomao hopes to just glide by, earning as little as possible for her kidnappers during her term of service, but such is not to be: when royal infants begin dying, Maomao can’t resist letting people know the cause. This catches the eye of the far-too-handsome Jinshi, who elevates Maomao from laundry maid to poison taster to the Emperor’s favorite concubine. So much for flying under the radar…

Tonight’s Episode: “Serving in the Outer Court“

Maomao returns to the palace, but this time to work in the outer palace, much to her surprise, as she thought she is returning to the rear palace, but she was fired. Jinshi asks her to keep using her freckle make-up. Gaoshun introduces her to Suiren, one of Jinshi’s personal assistants. Jinshi intends to have her become a court lady, but she fails the required exams despite studying, making her Jinshi’s personal assistant. She also has to contend with the jealous court ladies. She still longs for her practice of apothecary.

The life of a traveling merchant is a lonely one, a fact with which Kraft Lawrence is well acquainted. Wandering from town to town with just his horse, cart, and whatever wares have come his way, the peddler has pretty well settled into his routine—that is, until the night Lawrence finds a wolf goddess asleep in his cart. She strikes up a bargain with the merchant to lend him the cunning of “Holo the Wisewolf” to increase his profits in exchange for taking her along on his travels. Lawrence soon learns, though, that having an ancient goddess as a traveling companion can be a bit of a mixed blessing.

Tonight’s Episode: “The Harvest Festival and The Crowded Driver’s Box“

Once there was a village where a wolf-deity guaranteed a bountiful harvest, but the ancient pact has long been forgotten. Then travelling merchant Kraft Lawrence comes a visiting, and the time for pagan gods have passed. But there is a stranger who also leaves in his wagon, with an unbelievable story. And a merchant makes a deal with the Wise Wolf Holo.

Oshi no Ko (“My Favorite Idol” or “Their Idol’s Children”)

Dr Goro Amemiya works as an OB-GYN in a small rural town and is a huge fan of upcoming idol Ai Hoshino. After an unexpected meeting, Goro ends up dying suddenly only to be reborn as one of Ai’s children; a boy named Aquamarine Hoshino (or Aqua for short). He and his twin sister Ruby then grows up as one of show-biz’s biggest secrets.

Tonight’s Episode: “Manga-Based TV Drama“

Kana is eager to reconnect with Aqua and tries to talk him into getting back into acting, offering a role in a live action adaptation of the manga series Sweet Today. She mentions she has connections to famed producer Masaya Kaburagi, who Aqua recognizes as one of names on Ai’s secret contact list he found on her personal phone.

Demon Slayer (Kimetsu no Yaiba) – season 4

Tanjiro Kamado is a kindhearted and intelligent boy who lives with his family, making money by selling charcoal. Everything changes when his family is attacked and slaughtered by demons (oni). Tanjiro and his sister Nezuko are the sole survivors of the incident. Nezuko has now become a demon, but still surprisingly shows signs of human emotion and thought. Tanjiro becomes a demon slayer to help his sister turn human again and to prevent the same tragedy that happened to him and his sister, from happening to others.

Tonight’s Episode: “To Defeat Muzan Kibutsuji” – Hashira Training arc

While on a mission to rescue a kidnapped woman from a demon, Wind Hashira Sanemi Shinazugawa and Serpent Hashira Obanai Iguro encounter an entrance into the Infinity Castle before it suddenly vanishes. During an emergency meeting led by Kagaya’s wife Amane Ubuyashiki, the Hashira discuss the mysterious marks that appeared on Mitsuri and Muichiro in their battles, which were said to have originated from the Demon Slayers during the Sengoku period.

Jujutsu Kaisen season 2

Satoru Gojo and Suguru Geto were not always enemies. Long before they had what was supposed to be their final encounter during the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons, the pair were fellow students, rivals, and friends. In another world, they would have been the twin shining stars of Jujutsu Sorcery, but one fateful event destroyed any hope of that ever happening. Turn back the clock to witness the mission that drove them to curse one another beyond even death.

Tonight’s Episode: “Metamorphosis, part 2″

Panda rescues Kusakabe from the Shibuya destruction, while Mei Mei and Ui Ui are revealed to have fled to Malaysia. After using his cursed spirits to incapacitate Yuji, Pseudo-Geto proceeds to absorb and consume Mahito, using Uzumaki to take his Cursed Technique for himself. Just then, the Kyoto students arrive to provide backup, but are unable to do any effective damage.

Undead Unluck

Fuuko Izumo is known as a woman cursed with “Unluck.” Fuuko brings misfortune to anyone who touches her and the scale is proportional to how long they had physical contact. She’s saved by Andy, a man who cannot die (“Undead”). He hopes to figure out a way to use Fuuko’s misfortune to finally bring him death. The unlikely pair team up to complete missions given to them by the Book of Revelations, but if they or any of the other negators in their union fail, the book can punish humanity.

Tonight’s Episodes: “Crimson Bullet” and “UNDER”

Andy (UnDead) continues to fight Rip (UnRepair) but is unable to land a hit thanks to the unknown ability of another ally of Rip’s named Latla (Un???). Andy lands a hit on Latla by curving one of his finger bullets out of her line of sight. Rip fights back using a series of Artifacts. Chikara (UnMove) tries to help but is unable to use his ability to stop Rip. Eventually Rip and friends escape, but he releases his ability so Fuuko (UnLuck) is now safe. Later after Chikara is invited to join the UNION a younger Rip states he is there to tell Andy and Fuuko what him and his group are doing and to deliver an Artifact that looks like a revolver. Upon touching it, Andy and Fuuko see images of Ragnarök. Rip states the Union’s fight against God is pointless and that his team Under seek to have Negators rule the world until Ragnarök happens.
