Screening on the evening of Saturday, January 27^th 2024

January has certainly gone fast as we reach the final weekend, with people enjoying our selection of anime to help broaden their cultural experience.

There maybe some distractions this long weekend, with GenghisCon starting Thursday night and the Australia Day anniversary on Friday, which simultaneously memorialises the beginning of the invasion to destroy the world’s oldest living culture, the starting point for the development of the current Australian nation, as well as the anniversary of the only (successful) armed overthrow of the Australian Government (down with Governor Bligh!) in 1808. With all this excitement, we hope you won’t forget to attend our humble JAFWA screening on Saturday evening.

During the Dinner Break we will be having our Monthly Survey, where our dear JAFWAites can express their opinion on the various programs previewed and other suggested possibilities, utilising a scalar grading system.
And later, we have the monthly Member’s Prize Draw, with so much good stuff to choose from for the Winner.

This week we have another preview episode that will be screened (Masterful Cat delayed until next time). An isekai where our intrepid human is not reborn as an overpowered fantasy creature.

Mr Villains Day Off.

Woo-hoo! A title I am not familair with, so it may have untold joy.

Quickly checking Wikipedia I see that it started off serialised on the Pixiv website starting in 2018, before being picked up by Square Enix. Both promising signs as to its quality. And earlier in this January, the anime started screening in Japan (so only ~3 episodes so far).
But what is the story about?!? For this I turn to AnimeNewsNetwork which reveals:

• A certain man is, in his working life, a major leader in an alien organization bent on world destruction, the Evil League. But even bad guys need a chance to rest, and on his days off, he does just that – trying new ice cream flavors, geeking out over pandas, and awkwardly helping human children and his chief rival, the Ranger Dawn Red.

I can’t deny that this sounds very appealing. Maybe we can get a copy of the first episode for previewing sometime in February? Crossing some fingers.

Dr Stone season 3 “New World”

Modern society is lost when a mysterious light leaves everyone petrified in stone. Thousands of years in the future, super genius Senku awakens and begins restoring civilisation with his Kingdom of Science. With the Stone Wars over, the former members of Tsukasa’s Empire of Might join forces with the Kingdom of Science to build a ship capable of sailing across open ocean to seek answers on the mystery of the global petrification. However, before they can begin their voyage Senku and his friends need to find some key resources and push some new scientific advancements to build the type of vessel they need.

This evening’s Episode: “Flicker of Doom“

Yo attempts to petrify Moz as he continues to duel Hyoga, but has no idea how Medusa is activated. Hyoga escapes to the island after Senku, trusting he has a plan as Moz chases him. Ibara activates Medusa with a voice command, petrifying Yo, then retrieves Medusa which he programs to petrify the whole island in 15 minutes before forcing Oarashi to swallow it to carry it to the center of the island.

Spy x Family – part 2b

In order to ensure World Peace, a master spy who has to “build a family” to execute a mission, not realising that the girl he adopts as his daughter is a telepath, and the woman he agrees to be in a marriage with is a skilled assassin.

This Evening’s Episode: “The Fearsome Luxury Cruise Ship“

After dinner, Matthew realizes the mission has been compromised after dispatching 2 assassins who were sent after them by the informant, and orders Yor to escort their targets to another safe room. At a souvenir shop nearby, Anya, overhearing the assassin’s plan to murder them in the middle of the crowd, desperately tries to distract Loid so he won’t witness Yor’s secret job.

preview – Reincarnated as a Sword (“Tensei Shitara Ken Deshita”)

Reincarnated as a sentient weapon with memories of his past life, but not his name, a magical sword saves a young beastgirl from a life of slavery. Fran, the cat-eared girl, becomes his wielder, and wants only to grow stronger, while the sword wants to know why he is here.

Tonight’s Episode: “Catgirl Meets Sword“

An unnamed man is tragically killed in a car accident and reincarnates in another world as a sentient, magical sword. With telekinesis, he is able to fly and learn skills by killing monsters. He decides to continue slaying monsters and become the most powerful sword in the world while waiting for his destined wielder. Elsewhere, a Black Cat-girl named Fran lives as an abused slave, outfitted with a collar that prevents her from defying orders, but dreams of greatness.

The Apothecary Diaries (Kusuriya no Hitorigoto)

Apothecary Maomao was just out collecting herbs when she was kidnapped by procurers for the Imperial harem, an easy way for unscrupulous people to get money by having “relatives” go work in the Rear Palace. Hiding her skills and knowledge, Maomao hopes to just glide by, earning as little as possible for her kidnappers during her term of service, but such is not to be: when royal infants begin dying, Maomao can’t resist letting people know the cause. This catches the eye of the far-too-handsome Jinshi, who elevates Maomao from laundry maid to poison taster to the Emperor’s favorite concubine. So much for flying under the radar…

Tonight’s Episode: “The Unsettling Matter of the Spirit“

Rumours swirl of a mad ghostly woman attacking others in the Outer Palace. Jinshi’s attendant, Gaoshun, shows Maomao a mid-level concubine named Fuyou who appears to be dancing on the Eastern wall in the moonlight. She was originally brought before the Emperor, but then failed to impress him and lost his favor and she was then pledged to a General in the Emperor’s army. Afterwards, she went mad and began dancing in the moonlight.

Ancient Magus Bride season 2 (Mahou Tsukai no Yome)

Chise Hatori, 15 years old. Lost, without hope, and without family, she is bought for money … not by another person, but by a non-human sorcerer named Elias. Though she hesitates, she begins life anew as his apprentice and future wife. Now grown more confident in her role as a sleigh beggy, Chise was able to accept Elias and herself, if not necessarily everything about her situation. After Cartaphilus fell back into a slumber that would not last forever, Chise was able to go back to her regular life. Then she receives an invitation from a mutual aid organization for mages called the College.

Tonight’s Episode: “Coming events cast their shadows before.“

Cartaphilus and Silver are visited by the Horned God and Dark Lady seeking Chise. Chise is worried by her emerging power to enter peoples minds. Lucy asks her to see her memory of the Webster tragedy where Chise discovers the werewolf couple killing everyone except Lucy as the female werewolf refused to kill someone so young.

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury (Kidou Senshi Gandamu: Suisei no Majo)

An era when a multitude of corporations have entered space and built a huge economic system. A lone girl from the remote planet Mercury transfers to the Asticassia School of Technology, run by the Beneritt Group which dominates the mobile suit industry. Her name is Suletta Mercury. With a scarlet light burning in her pure heart, this girl walks step by step through a new world.

Tonight’s Episode: “Father and Child“

Since the Plant Quetta incident, Guel has been a Dawn of Fold prisoner. With the Benerit Group cracking down on them, the organization abandons its base and evacuates the refugees they are protecting. At Asticassia, Nika and Sarius have become prisoners of Grassley House, with Shaddiq revealing that he intends to sell the Benerit Group’s assets to Earth.

Jujutsu Kaisen (season 2)

Satoru Gojo and Suguru Geto were not always enemies. Long before they had what was supposed to be their final encounter during the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons, the pair were fellow students, rivals, and friends. In another world, they would have been the twin shining stars of Jujutsu Sorcery, but one fateful event destroyed any hope of that ever happening. Turn back the clock to witness the mission that drove them to curse one another beyond even death.

Tonight’s Episode: “Red Scale“

Crashing into the subway, Yuji encounters the enemy sorcerer Choso, who seeks revenge for his younger brothers getting killed in a previous attack on Yuki. Choso’s cursed technique, Blood Manipulation: Convergence-Piercing Blood, catching Yuji off guard and piercing his left arm. Can the ghost of Mechamaru help Yuji find the weakness to his enemy’s technique?

Undead Unluck

Fuuko Izumo is known as a woman cursed with “Unluck.” Fuuko brings misfortune to anyone who touches her and the scale is proportional to how long they had physical contact. She’s saved by Andy, a man who cannot die (“Undead”). He hopes to figure out a way to use Fuuko’s misfortune to finally bring him death. The unlikely pair team up to complete missions given to them by the Book of Revelations, but if they or any of the other negators in their union fail, the book can punish humanity.

Tonight’s Episodes: “How to Use My Unluck“

Fuuko and Andy travel to Russia to kill the mystery agent Shen told them about. On the way, they are attacked by fighter jets along with a satellite attack by the mystery agent who appears to be in love with Andy. After using their powers to escape their attackers, Fuuko and Andy crash land outside a lake in Russia.

The Eminence in Shadow (Kage no Jitsuryokusha ni Naritakute!)

Even in his past life, Cid’s dream wasn’t to become a protagonist or a final boss. He’d rather lie low as a minor character until it’s prime time to reveal he’s a mastermind or at least, do the next best thing-pretend to be one. And now that he’s been reborn into another world, he’s ready to set the perfect conditions to live out his dreams to the fullest.

Tonight’s Episode: “Your Lie, Your Wish“

Cid grabs Olivier and bites her carotid arteries to kill her, revealing to a stunned Nelson he allowed Olivier to stab him in a way in which she missed his organs. He also reveals the secret he figured out: the Sanctuary absorbs magic from the air, so by compressing the whole of his magic into a solid mass within his eye, he can use his magic again.

Goblin Slayer season 2

In a world of fantasy, adventurers come far and wide to join the Guild, in order to complete contracts for whatever jobs are available. An inexperienced priestess joins her first adventuring party, but comes into danger after her first adventurer contract involving goblins goes wrong. After the rest of her party is wiped out, she is saved by a man known as Goblin Slayer, an adventurer whose only purpose is the eradication of goblins with extreme prejudice. And when rumours of his feats begin to circulate, there’s no telling who might come calling next.

Tonight’s Episode: “The Training Grounds on the Outskirts of Town” season 2

Goblin Slayer and other adventurers begin mentoring trainees at Noble Fencer’s new training grounds. Spearman insists Goblin Slayer join him and Heavy Warrior for a boy’s night out. Wizard Boy complains about Goblin Slayer to trainees Rookie Warrior, Rhea Fighter and Apprentice Cleric but finds them unsympathetic as Goblin Slayer has killed thousands of Goblins, whereas Wizard Boy almost died due to arrogance and had to be rescued.
