Screening on the evening of Saturday, January 20th 2024
We got off to a scorching start last Saturday, happy to see so many people turn up. Apparently there were a few who suffered from a little anime withdrawal, but most people seemed to be here for the exciting program.
This week we continue on from last week but with an important tweak – 2024’s first preview episode will be screened (hopefully people don’t mind too much the single show we had to delay for this to happen). A murder mystery where the consulting detective is,… Deranged?
The new chap who turned up last week seemed so enamoured that he filled in a Suggestion sheet for us. His enthusiasm figuratively drips off the written word, but I won’t include K.M.’s identifying info, nor can I replicated the artwork that he scribed upon the suggestion sheet:
All 13-14 episodes of The Daichi’s – Earth Defence Family Non-Macross anime Shoji Kawamori, across many week’s this year.
MOTIVE: On of New Year’s Resolutions is getting at least five commissioned digital artworks, the primary theme is cosplays of beloved characters in regards to bright/lavish clothing design.
Shoji Kawamori, a legend in mech anime, though most people know him only from the Macross franchise, though I give him special kudos for Vision of Escaflowne. K.M. is referring to the 2001 anime that Shoji Kawamori created, that according to Anime News Network:
The Daichis are a family in danger of tearing itself apart. Dissatisfied and money obsessed mom Seiko has served wimpy and otaku dad Mamoru with divorce papers. Daughter Nozomi who has always been saddled with all the housework, feels pained that everyone is using her. The youngest albeit most foul mouthed, Dai is forced to watch all this as everything is going to pieces. However when the Galaxy Federation recruits the Daichis to combat alien threats to the wellbeing of the Earth, it will be a chance for the family to save the world and maybe themselves.
This may take some effort to find, but I for one thinks this sounds like a suitable candidate for our retro-timeslost when we bring it back. Though I wonder at the translation that cause Wikipedia to call it The Family’s Defensive Alliance.

Dr Stone season 3 “New World”
Modern society is lost when a mysterious light leaves everyone petrified in stone. Thousands of years in the future, super genius Senku awakens and begins restoring civilisation with his Kingdom of Science. With the Stone Wars over, the former members of Tsukasa’s Empire of Might join forces with the Kingdom of Science to build a ship capable of sailing across open ocean to seek answers on the mystery of the global petrification. However, before they can begin their voyage Senku and his friends need to find some key resources and push some new scientific advancements to build the type of vessel they need.
This evening’s Episode: “Joker“
The counter-attack on the Perseus has effect when Magma fires the gun randomly. Nikki retrieves the pistol which has only two shots remaining. Moz knocks Yo and the pistol overboard and defeats Kinro, so everyone retreats into Perseus’ lower decks. Ibara follows to gloat at his victory, but Senku has a plan to introduce a Joker into the battle, as well as reveal he can revive the petrified.
Spy x Family – part 2b
In order to ensure World Peace, a master spy who has to “build a family” to execute a mission, not realising that the girl he adopts as his daughter is a telepath, and the woman he agrees to be in a marriage with is a skilled assassin.
This Evening’s Episode: “Plan to Cross the Border“
The Shopkeeper, the leader of Garden, assigns Yor under the guise of City Hall business to be the bodyguard of Olka Gretcher and her son, the sole survivors of a deposed crime family, until they can safely escape to a neutral country after boarding the cruise ship Princess Lorelei. Coincidentally, Anya and Loid also win a trip on the same cruise via a shopping mall raffle. And so many assassins.
The Masterful Cat is Depressed Again Today (Dekiru Neko wa Kyou mo Yuuutsu)
One day, a young woman named Saku took in a stray black cat who she later named Yukichi. However, as time went on, Yukichi grew large enough to be mistaken for a bear. Instead of being a threat though, Yukichi spends his time cooking food, doing laundry, and taking care of his owner after she comes home from hard days at work.
This Evening’s Episode: “The Masterful Cat Has Grown Big“
Once there was a small black cat rescued from the snow by an office worker. But this black cat was truly masterful and understands the need for money, and despairs over its worthless human master. Is starvation in the offering? Still Yukichi will live with the decision he made that snowy day. But why did Yukichi grow as big as bear in 3 years? And what of Chief Orizuka?
preview – Ron Kamonohashi: Deranged Detective (“Kamonohashi Ron no Kindan Suiri”)
The series focuses on the adventures of Ron Kamonohashi, an eccentric private detective, and Totomaru Isshiki, an unskilled police officer, as they solve crimes together. Ron Kamonohashi, a private investigator with serious issues and strange background, and Totomaru Ishiki, a pure-hearted but dim police detective, team up to solve the most baffling mysteries.
Tonight’s Episode: “The Case of the Metropolitan Serial Drownings“
Investigative Division 1 is perplexed by the serial murders, but junior-most police detective Totomaru Isshiki is about to get the boot. Old man Kiku sends Isshiki to see a legendary casual consulting detective Ron Kamonohashi. Who doesn’t want anything to do with the case. Until an overheard phone call awakens his devastating detective skills. And Ron’s terrible flaw – 100% solving crimes, 0% arrests.
The Apothecary Diaries (Kusuriya no Hitorigoto)
Apothecary Maomao was just out collecting herbs when she was kidnapped by procurers for the Imperial harem, an easy way for unscrupulous people to get money by having “relatives” go work in the Rear Palace. Hiding her skills and knowledge, Maomao hopes to just glide by, earning as little as possible for her kidnappers during her term of service, but such is not to be: when royal infants begin dying, Maomao can’t resist letting people know the cause. This catches the eye of the far-too-handsome Jinshi, who elevates Maomao from laundry maid to poison taster to the Emperor’s favorite concubine. So much for flying under the radar…
Tonight’s Episode: “Chilly Apothecary“
Soldiers trying to pacify an outside village get poisoned while they eat and Jinshi is asked to help decide the fate of the village leader suspected of poisoning them. Maomao begins her new role as lady-in-waiting by meeting the others currently working for Gyokuyou, who take extra pity on Maomao for her bandaged arm and for being given the job of Poison Food Tester. Maomao takes to the task quickly but gets bored.
Ancient Magus Bride season 2 (Mahou Tsukai no Yome)
Chise Hatori, 15 years old. Lost, without hope, and without family, she is bought for money … not by another person, but by a non-human sorcerer named Elias. Though she hesitates, she begins life anew as his apprentice and future wife. Now grown more confident in her role as a sleigh beggy, Chise was able to accept Elias and herself, if not necessarily everything about her situation. After Cartaphilus fell back into a slumber that would not last forever, Chise was able to go back to her regular life. Then she receives an invitation from a mutual aid organization for mages called the College.
Tonight’s Episode: “Gather ye rosebuds while ye may.“
At the Infirmary Alexandra borrows Chise’s limitless Sleigh Beggy magic to help the students all drained of magic. Chise is grabbed by a student, allowing a creature inside his mind to begin draining her magic. Her Cartaphilus fragment protects her. The sick students all recover for no reason. Elias believes receiving so much magic from Chise so suddenly broke the Grimoire’s link with its victims.
Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury (Kidou Senshi Gandamu: Suisei no Majo)
An era when a multitude of corporations have entered space and built a huge economic system. A lone girl from the remote planet Mercury transfers to the Asticassia School of Technology, run by the Beneritt Group which dominates the mobile suit industry. Her name is Suletta Mercury. With a scarlet light burning in her pure heart, this girl walks step by step through a new world.
Tonight’s Episode: “What They Wish For“
Prospera explains to Miorine that Quiet Zero will use the Gund-Format to take control of any technology, effectively eliminating war. At Asticassia, Suletta and other students participate in the battle royal while Sarius bears witness. However, the event is interrupted by Norea and Sophie with their Gundams and an army of drones. Why Aerial doesn’t inflict the curse of Gundam is revealed.
Undead Unluck
Fuuko Izumo is known as a woman cursed with “Unluck.” Fuuko brings misfortune to anyone who touches her and the scale is proportional to how long they had physical contact. She’s saved by Andy, a man who cannot die (“Undead”). He hopes to figure out a way to use Fuuko’s misfortune to finally bring him death. The unlikely pair team up to complete missions given to them by the Book of Revelations, but if they or any of the other negators in their union fail, the book can punish humanity.
Tonight’s Episodes: “Union“
Fuuko reveals that another factor to her power is how much she likes the person. Hearing this, Andy decides to keep her alive for as long as possible. Andy later reveals that the agents that attacked them were members of a covert group called “the Union”. As the two are leaving town, two Union agents attack them.
The Eminence in Shadow (Kage no Jitsuryokusha ni Naritakute!)
Even in his past life, Cid’s dream wasn’t to become a protagonist or a final boss. He’d rather lie low as a minor character until it’s prime time to reveal he’s a mastermind or at least, do the next best thing-pretend to be one. And now that he’s been reborn into another world, he’s ready to set the perfect conditions to live out his dreams to the fullest.
Tonight’s Episode: “A Bloody Showdown as an Offering to Annihilation“
Epsilon reveals she and the named Shadows personally brought into Shadow Garden by Cid were all girls experimented on by the Cult; Cid cured them of the demonic/cursed side effects, leaving their strength intact. They enter Sanctuary’s archive and steal the records of the Cult’s experiments. Delta reveals she possesses berserker-level strength, allowing her to kill hundreds of Nelson’s copies without any magic. Meanwhile, Cid and Aurora reach Sanctuary’s core.
Goblin Slayer season 2
In a world of fantasy, adventurers come far and wide to join the Guild, in order to complete contracts for whatever jobs are available. An inexperienced priestess joins her first adventuring party, but comes into danger after her first adventurer contract involving goblins goes wrong. After the rest of her party is wiped out, she is saved by a man known as Goblin Slayer, an adventurer whose only purpose is the eradication of goblins with extreme prejudice. And when rumours of his feats begin to circulate, there’s no telling who might come calling next.
Tonight’s Episode: “The Red-Haired Wizard Boy” season 2
Priestess takes the lead on the next goblin slaying quest and learns an adventurer party has already gone missing, worrying Priestess at the fate of the female adventurers. Wizard Boy is baffled they actually stop to decide on tactics, still insisting goblins are unintelligent beasts. They start killing goblins but Wizard Boy is angry they are moving too slowly. He foolishly rushes ahead upon hearing a female prisoner being tortured and though he kills his first goblin he is surrounded by goblins and a troll.
