Screening on the evening of Saturday, September 30th 2023
The Spring Equinox has passed, and our old enemy the Sun continues to gain ascendancy! All praise the Librarian Kris and his Sun Disactivator for granting us legions of otaku better viewing of anime.
This week we continue with our Bean Poll as to the fate of our retro show “City Hunter”, which was exciting in its day, but has not aged well in the intervening 30 years. So, only a half dozen episodes in, we are tasked with choosing between 3 different fates:
- Continue screening “City Hunter” after the Late Break.
- Discontinue screening “City Hunter” after this week, and find another retro slot item (probably “El Hazard”).
- Do away with “City Hunter” after this week, and use the emptied timeslot to show extra episodes of our regular items to try and finish by the end of the year.
Meanwhile, it is the end of the month of September, and we all know what that means – this week we have our Monthly Survey, where our dear JAFWAites can express their opinion on the various programs previewed and other suggested possibilities, utilising a scalar grading system.
And later, we have the monthly Member’s Prize Draw.
In addition to to all the other excitement, we will screen a preview episode before the survey, a spin-off of the Love Live! Sunshine idol anime, where the characters are re-imagined in a fantasy setting.
We are trying to fill the program for the final screening of 2023 in December. What do you want to see?

Barring a resurgence of COVID-19 pestilence, these fannish events of interest are scheduled to happen:
- Saturday October 7th 2024 — JAFWA doing a Bunnings Sausage Sizzle down at Cannington.
- October 16th to 22nd 2023 — Japanese Film Festival will be screening in Perth.
- Weekend November 3rd to 5th 2023 — Kai-Con 2023.
- Saturday December 9th 2023 — JAFWA’s final screening for 2023 before we take a holiday. This will be a normal length screening with an irregular program. We request that you, the audience, suggest anime items for inclusion in that night’s program.
- Saturday January 13th 2024 — JAFWA’s screening resume in 2024.

The Devil is a Part-Timer season 3 (Hataraku Maou-sama)
Having been thwarted in his attempts to conquer Ente Isla, the mighty demon lord Satan escapes through a portal with his general Alsiel… And winds up in modern day Tokyo with very little magical power left. His resources for world domination now consist of a tiny rented apartment and a job at a fast food restaurant. To survive and find a way to return to Ente Isla, Satan adopts the name Sadao Maou and finds that the Hero Emilia is in similar circumstances. And now they have to look after a very special child.
This evening’s Episode: “The Devil Loses His Standing”
On Earth Chiho gates a chance to ask questions of the mysterious Ms Amane. But will she regret the answers? Alsiel tries to rally the demon troops as the Hero and army advances on HeavenSky. While MaOu is still powerless, Acieth is acting wrong, and Emi is conflicted. But finally the message is delivered – the Demon King is coming.
Ningen Fushin – aka Apparently, Disillusioned Adventurers Will Save the World (Ningen Fushin no Boukensha-tachi ga Sekai o Sukuu You Desu)
Veteran adventurer Nick’s life is falling apart. Despite all the knowledge and expertise he’s devoted to his adventuring party, his respected leader kicked him out, his girlfriend dumped him, and his teammates shamelessly accused him of embezzlement. Tired, heartbroken, and looking for a drink, Nick chances upon a few kindred spirits who are jaded as he is. Together, these disillusioned adventurers form an unstoppable team out to save their bleak, depressing world.
This evening’s Episode: “Labyrinth Dragnet”
Reina’s mother, retired adventurer Ada the Sommelier, is grateful the Survivors saved her, and offers training. After encountering Stepping Man again Nick also doubts it is Olivia. Olivia later attacks them, believing Nick is Stepping Man. After determining that neither of them are Stepping Man Olivia admits Stepping Man was her adventurer title before she became a reporter, meaning Stepping Man is using her title and skills to frame her.
preview – Yohane the Parhelion: Sunshine in the Mirror (Genjitsu no Yohane: Sunshine in the Mirror)
The “story no one knows about a girl everyone knows” reimagines Yoshiko Tsushima, the school idol afflicted with chuunibyou (adolescent delusions of grandeur), as a fortune-telling girl. The story is set in Numazu, a scenic harbor town surrounded by the sea and mountains. Ever since she was little, the girl Yohane has never fit in, and has always felt apart from everyone in town. Her aspirations and true place in this world lie elsewhere.
This evening’s Episode: “The Song of Beginnings”
Yohane travels to her hometown after her attempts to become an idol are not successful. She meets a wolf named Lailaps, who becomes her guide, her friend Hanamaru, and begins to realize that she wants to be in the town after all.
Ancient Magus Bride season 2 (Mahou Tsukai no Yome)
Chise Hatori, 15 years old. Lost, without hope, and without family, she is bought for money … not by another person, but by a non-human sorcerer named Elias. Though she hesitates, she begins life anew as his apprentice and future wife. Now grown more confident in her role as a sleigh beggy, Chise was able to accept Elias and herself, if not necessarily everything about her situation. After Cartaphilus fell back into a slumber that would not last forever, Chise was able to go back to her regular life. Then she receives an invitation from a mutual aid organization for mages called the College.
Tonight’s Episode: “Slow and sure. II”
Chise had refused to let Elias come since the trip is about learning self-sufficiency. In the end Elias split himself in half so he could be with Chise but powerless. Chise spots an Each-uisge, a dangerous relative of Kelpies. Chise, half-Elias and Ruth sense a magical disturbance and find Lucy drained of magic.
Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury (Kidou Senshi Gandamu: Suisei no Majo)
An era when a multitude of corporations have entered space and built a huge economic system. A lone girl from the remote planet Mercury transfers to the Asticassia School of Technology, run by the Beneritt Group which dominates the mobile suit industry. Her name is Suletta Mercury. With a scarlet light burning in her pure heart, this girl walks step by step through a new world.
Tonight’s Episode: “Reflection in an Icy Eye ”
Elan, who is revealed to be a genetically modified human designed to pilot Gundams, codenamed Elan-04, is ordered by Peil Industries’ leadership to investigate Suletta, whom he believes is enhanced like himself. Using his status as a member of Asticassia’s Duelling Committee, he convinces Suletta to let him pilot the Aerial as part of a mandatory Mobile Suit check-up, and confirms that is indeed a Gundam.
Jujutsu Kaisen season 2
Satoru Gojo and Suguru Geto were not always enemies. Long before they had what was supposed to be their final encounter during the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons, the pair were fellow students, rivals, and friends. In another world, they would have been the twin shining stars of Jujutsu Sorcery, but one fateful event destroyed any hope of that ever happening. Turn back the clock to witness the mission that drove them to curse one another beyond even death.
Tonight’s Episode “Premature Death” season 2
One year later, Gojo has become so adept with using his curse technique and becoming “the strongest” he has been taking on more solo missions, leaving Geto to feel more isolated with his own conflicted feelings. Geto realizes that removing all cursed spirits is potentially possible if they killed all the non-sorcerers. Geto is branded a curse user and sentenced to death, shocking Gojo.
In/Spectre season 2 (Kyokou Suiri)
When she was still just a girl, Kotoko was kidnapped by yokai. These spirits made her into a powerful intermediary between the spirit and human worlds, but this power came at a price: an eye and a leg. Now, years later, she watches out for dangerous yokai while developing feelings for a young man named Kuro, who is also special: an incident with a yokai has given him healing powers. He’s surprised when Kotoko asks him to team up to handle renegade yokai, preserving the thin line between reality and the supernatural.
This evening’s Episodes: “And So, the Ruler Disappeared”
Kotoko Iwanaga is invited by Otonashi Goichi to solve a 23 year old murder, and adjudicate an inheritance dispute. The murder was committed by a fox yokai, in a deal with Goichi. But now it is time to teach the next generation that murder, and dealing with ayakashi does not pay.
retro item – City Hunter
Ryo Saeba is a “sweeper” who is always found chasing beautiful girls and a private detective who works to rid Tokyo of crime, along with his associate or partner, Hideyuki Makimura. Their “City Hunter” business is an underground jack-of-all-trades operation, contacted by writing the letters “XYZ” on a blackboard at Shinjuku Station.
Tonight’s episode: “No Romance for this Actress: The Last Shot for Hope ”
A lovelorn actress hires Umibouzu to kill her, the producer hires Ryou to protect her.
The Eminence in Shadow (Kage no Jitsuryokusha ni Naritakute!)
Even in his past life, Cid’s dream wasn’t to become a protagonist or a final boss. He’d rather lie low as a minor character until it’s prime time to reveal he’s a mastermind or at least, do the next best thing-pretend to be one. And now that he’s been reborn into another world, he’s ready to set the perfect conditions to live out his dreams to the fullest.
Tonight’s Episode: “Sadism’s Rewards”
Now locked in a cell next to a mutated human girl, Alexia has her blood stolen by a cult scientist, who claims that it contains demon DNA. Cid is tortured by knights for Alexia’s location, but since he has trained himself to withstand pain, he pretends to be a pathetic but innocent NPC, thinking it makes him look cool. After five long days, Princess Iris orders that Cid be released. Then Alpha returns, still playing Cid’s role-playing game?
Vinland Saga
Set in Dane-controlled England at the start of the 11th century, and features the Danish invaders of England commonly known as Vikings. The story combines a dramatisation of King Cnut the Great’s historical rise to power with a revenge plot centered on the historical explorer Thorfinn, the son of a murdered ex-warrior.
Tonight’s Episode: “War at Ketil’s Farm” / “The Battle of Ketil’s Farm” season 2
Ketil gathers his men, numbering around 350 of mostly ragtag recruits, to defend the farm without revealing who they will be fighting until they are all gathered together. Canute’s forces arrive in four ships and offer Ketil an ultimatum to surrender his lands and leave without bloodshed but with Thorgil on his side, Ketil decides to fight. As the battle begins, Thorfinn, Einar, and Leif, leave in a cart with Arnheid who briefly regains consciousness.
