Screening on the evening of Saturday, September 9^th 2023

JAFWA still operating in Winter hours for this month! Program starts at 4:15PM!

Spring has sprung upon us as we at JAFWA enter the month of September.
Hoping that the Evolve pop culture festival at the Cannington Showgrounds, behind Bunnings managed to succour some people’s fannish desires last weekend.
And, believe it or not, I think that “The First Slam Dunk” anime movie can still be found in cinemas, with English subtitles for those who don’t understand the Japanese language.

Since they can’t keep animating episodes of “Golden Kamuy” fast enough, this week we start a new regular series in its place (which placed highly in the monthly surveys). We will be previewing an episode from the anime adaption of a manga series I am reading and thinking is very slow and perplexing, yet I keep searching for the next volume feeling that something brilliant is about to unfold.
You may also notice that we have re-arranged the program slightly – our retro series “City Hunter” from before far too many things we take for granted these days, and which was a fan favourite thirty years ago has not aged well, in that the protagonist engaged in behaviour that is intolerable these days, rather than merely unacceptable as in the late 80s.

We are trying to fill the program for the final screening of 2023 in December, What do you want to see?

Looking for volunteers to help with some extra-curricular activities for JAFWA. First, in October there is a fund-raising sausage sizzle at Bunnings Cannington. Then JAFWA is doing the anime screening at Kai-Con 2023.

Barring a resurgence of COVID-19 pestilence, these fannish events of interest are scheduled to happen:

The Devil is a Part-Timer season 3 (Hataraku Maou-sama)

Having been thwarted in his attempts to conquer Ente Isla, the mighty demon lord Satan escapes through a portal with his general Alsiel… And winds up in modern day Tokyo with very little magical power left. His resources for world domination now consist of a tiny rented apartment and a job at a fast food restaurant. To survive and find a way to return to Ente Isla, Satan adopts the name Sadao Maou and finds that the Hero Emilia is in similar circumstances. And now they have to look after a very special child.

Ningen Fushin – aka Apparently, Disillusioned Adventurers Will Save the World (Ningen Fushin no Boukensha-tachi ga Sekai o Sukuu You Desu)

Veteran adventurer Nick’s life is falling apart. Despite all the knowledge and expertise he’s devoted to his adventuring party, his respected leader kicked him out, his girlfriend dumped him, and his teammates shamelessly accused him of embezzlement. Tired, heartbroken, and looking for a drink, Nick chances upon a few kindred spirits who are jaded as he is. Together, these disillusioned adventurers form an unstoppable team out to save their bleak, depressing world.

This evening’s Episode: “Gambling Lesson”

After found cheating in the Mathematics Bare Knuckle, Leon is interrogated about a treasure he looted from a labyrinth years ago, the Sword of Ruinous Evolution. Elsewhere Tiana, Nick and Kizuna enjoy themselves at a casino which is attacked by Leon looking for Nick, having used the sword to escape and evolve into a monster.

Ancient Magus Bride season 2 (Mahou Tsukai no Yome)

Chise Hatori, 15 years old. Lost, without hope, and without family, she is bought for money … not by another person, but by a non-human sorcerer named Elias. Though she hesitates, she begins life anew as his apprentice and future wife. Now grown more confident in her role as a sleigh beggy, Chise was able to accept Elias and herself, if not necessarily everything about her situation. After Cartaphilus fell back into a slumber that would not last forever, Chise was able to go back to her regular life. Then she receives an invitation from a mutual aid organization for mages called the College.

Tonight’s Episode: “First impressions are the most lasting.”

Chise struggles to talk to Lucy. Jasmine hints at the Webster Tragedy but won’t reveal more. Isaac tells Chise about the seven families who founded the College. Rian is of the Scrimgeour family of Protectors. Chise tries to speak with Zoe but when he ignores her Lucy steals his earphones, revealing his hair is actually snakes. Zoe is shocked when Chise fearlessly pushes his snakes aside, allowing Lucy to return the headphones.

Tokio lives with other children inside a world surrounded by a beautiful wall, but one day she receives a message asking her if she wants to go outside. Meanwhile, a boy named Maru travels with an older woman, eking out a meager existence in a ruined world as they search for “paradise.”

This evening’s Episode: “Heaven and Hell”

Following a disaster which has left Japan devastated, within a walled area, children are schooled by robots in a place they call “Heaven” and believe that the outside world is “Hell” and populated by monsters. One day, a student named Tokio receives a message that a poses the question, “Do you want to go outside of the outside?” Meanwhile, outside the walls of the school, a girl named Kiruko, accompanied by a boy named Maru who looks like Tokio, is traveling through the devastated land in search of two men in a photograph and a place called “Heaven”.

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury (Kidou Senshi Gandamu: Suisei no Majo)

An era when a multitude of corporations have entered space and built a huge economic system. A lone girl from the remote planet Mercury transfers to the Asticassia School of Technology, run by the Beneritt Group which dominates the mobile suit industry. Her name is Suletta Mercury. With a scarlet light burning in her pure heart, this girl walks step by step through a new world.

Tonight’s Episode: “Cursed Mobile Suit ”

Following the duel, Suletta is confined under suspicion of using a Gundam, where she is visited by Peil House head Elan, who has grown interested in her. Taking charge of the investigation, Cathedra launches an inquiry into the Aerial’s manufacturer. Meanwhile, whilst feeling conflicted over Suletta’s arrest, Miorine is furious when she is informed that her father has transferred her out of Asticassia.

Demon Slayer (Kimetsu no Yaiba) – season 3

Tanjiro Kamado is a kindhearted and intelligent boy who lives with his family, making money by selling charcoal. Everything changes when his family is attacked and slaughtered by demons (oni). Tanjiro and his sister Nezuko are the sole survivors of the incident. Nezuko has now become a demon, but still surprisingly shows signs of human emotion and thought. Tanjiro becomes a demon slayer to help his sister turn human again and to prevent the same tragedy that happened to him and his sister, from happening to others.

Tonight’s Episode: “Love Hashira Mitsuri Kanroji ” Swordsmith Village arc

Mitsuri succeeds in slicing off the dragons, but as she corners Zohakuten and attempts to behead him, she fails to realize that he is not the main body and is violently stunned by his sonic attack. Zohakuten goes to kill her as she recalls her past.

In/Spectre season 2 (Kyokou Suiri)

When she was still just a girl, Kotoko was kidnapped by yokai. These spirits made her into a powerful intermediary between the spirit and human worlds, but this power came at a price: an eye and a leg. Now, years later, she watches out for dangerous yokai while developing feelings for a young man named Kuro, who is also special: an incident with a yokai has given him healing powers. He’s surprised when Kotoko asks him to team up to handle renegade yokai, preserving the thin line between reality and the supernatural.

This evening’s Episodes: “Electroshock Pinocchio”

Tae-san once made the “mistake” of letting a lazy cat yokai (bakeneko) with a taste for alcohol take up residence in her house. But now a more shocking mystery afflicts her small seaside town, as fish die and tourism dries up. Does it have enything to do with a curse that the late Zenta-san may or my not have cast through a puppet? Possibly it is fortunate that the bakeneko can ask for assistance from its Goddess of Wisdom.

retro item – City Hunter

Ryo Saeba is a “sweeper” who is always found chasing beautiful girls and a private detective who works to rid Tokyo of crime, along with his associate or partner, Hideyuki Makimura. Their “City Hunter” business is an underground jack-of-all-trades operation, contacted by writing the letters “XYZ” on a blackboard at Shinjuku Station.

Tonight’s episode: “Love Don’t Leave Me: A Ten Count to Tomorrow ”

A boxer is shot in a park by a rival. His widow, a doctor with cancer, contracts Ryou to deal with the rival.

The Eminence in Shadow (Kage no Jitsuryokusha ni Naritakute!)

Even in his past life, Cid’s dream wasn’t to become a protagonist or a final boss. He’d rather lie low as a minor character until it’s prime time to reveal he’s a mastermind or at least, do the next best thing-pretend to be one. And now that he’s been reborn into another world, he’s ready to set the perfect conditions to live out his dreams to the fullest.

Tonight’s Episode: “The Hated Classmate”

Akane Nishino is a famous actress, good student and friendly with her classmates. However this is a fake persona she created after an incident when a fan kidnapped and molested her. Inside she is angry, bitter and despises everyone, in particular classmate Minoru Kageno who barely acknowledges her existence. When Nishino is kidnapped by criminals who intend to ransom her. They are interrupted by Kageno disguised as a masked vigilante calling himself Stylish Ruffian Slayer but when they see Slayer uses dual crowbars they realise he is actually a dangerous brawler who can defeat gangs by himself,.

Vinland Saga

Set in Dane-controlled England at the start of the 11th century, and features the Danish invaders of England commonly known as Vikings. The story combines a dramatisation of King Cnut the Great’s historical rise to power with a revenge plot centered on the historical explorer Thorfinn, the son of a murdered ex-warrior.

Tonight’s Episode: “Cause / Great Purpose” season 2

Realising that Gardar is free, Einar races with Thorfinn to Sverkel’s farmhouse to check on Arnheid, but everything seems normal. However, Arnheid confesses that she helped Gardar escape, and he is now badly wounded and laying hidden in Sverkel’s farmhouse. Einar offers to help her and Gardar escape and Thorfinn agrees.
