Screening on the evening of Saturday, May 14^th 2022

We have reached the end of the month of May already, and the weather will be telling us it is no longer Summery (last week’s sausage sizzle was a last hurrah – mmmm sizzled sausages).
But Fear Not, for starting this upcoming screening, JAFWA will be running on Winter hours (addressed in last year’s AGM) – hence we start and finish an hour earlier. So we will be seeing you this week for a 4:15PM start!

That is a reminder to think about the upcoming Annual General Meeting and committee elections in July. We request that all signed up members come along that afternoon to find out how the current committee have been doing over the last year, discuss issues to be dealt with, raise motions for actions to be carried out in your names, and then in the the evening vote in the new committee.

As well as out normal regular items, we will also screen a preview episode this week. The old fantasy trope of the chosen hero defeating the armies of evil. But then, what happens after that?

Cash for Containers

As people may have noticed, JAFWA collects the recyclable containers (cans and bottles) that are disposed of by our attendees. It helps in a small way.

Covid-19 Safety Precautions

We continue taking precautions to limit the possible future waves of CoVid-19, and we ask that you co-operate and even help where possible with our efforts to keep you safe – some social distancing, extra cleaning with antiseptic, library under limited access, etc. Also, we must ask that anyone unfortunate enough to be infected to not attend JAFWA until they are contagion free.

• Help is always welcome during set-up and pack-up due to the extra duties imposed by COVID-19 precautions.
• No longer need to arrive early to confirm personal details due to COVID 19 regulations. Contact Tracing, either by the SafeWA app on your keitai (mobile phones), or by signing in at the contact tracing sheet near the entry, is no longer required.
• We are no long required by City of South Perth to check our attendees’ Vaccination status.

Barring a resurgence of COVID-19 pestilence, these fannish events of interest are scheduled to happen:

Non Non Biyori – Repeat

In the countryside small town village of Asahigaoka, a place lacking many of the conveniences that people from the city are accustomed to. The nearest stores are a few miles away and one of the local schools consists of only five students, each of whom is in a different grade of elementary or middle school. Hotaru Ichijo, a fifth grader from Tokyo, transfers into Asahigaoka Branch School and has to adjust to countryside life with her new friends. A year has passed

This evening’s Episode: “I Took Lunch Duty ” season 2

The girls do a woodwork class, where Natsumi and Renge struggle to come with an idea of what to make. Later, Natsumi recalls what happened years ago when Hikage brought in a baby Renge, who proceeded to cause chaos in her wake. On another day, Komari finds her old teddy bear and asks Hotaru to help her fix it.

Uramichi-Oniisan

31-year-old Uramichi Omota has two sides to his personality. He appears as the young man in charge of physical exercises on the educational program “Maman to Together.” Although he has a fresh and upbeat demeanor on the show, he is actually a bit emotionally unstable, he can’t help but reveal his jaded, worn-out personality.

This evening’s Episode: “Young People These Days”

The actor Usao-san is feeling lonely, and Uramichi-oniisan is not sympathetic. His advice on Santa is more relevant, but it seems Iketeru-Oniisan still believes in Santa. But the higher-ups consider Christmas to be more commercial. Christmas and New Year’s is such a jolly time, is it not? The young people just can’t get into the spirit.

Fena: Pirate Princess (Kaizoku Oujo)

An orphan girl, Fena Houtman, has been raised on an Island where there is no hope of becoming anything more than chattel, to be used and discarded by soldiers of the British Empire. But Fena is more than just another powerless orphan. When her mysterious past comes knocking, Fena will break the chains of her oppressors.

Tonight’s Episodes: “At Mission’s End ”

As Fena and Yukimaru find their way to a desiccated ark, Shitan finds a chest supposedly containing the Kusanagi sword when the rest of the Goblin Knights notice that Fena and Yukimaru are missing. Suddenly, Abel arrives at the entrance to the treasure room with the Royal Navy unit behind him.

I’m Quitting Heroing (Yuusha, Yamemasu)

Leo is a hero who once saved the world from a demon army’s invasion. However, he was feared and ostracized by people afterward, and ended up with no job. Feeling that his skills would be better appreciated elsewhere, he joins the demon lord’s army that he once fought. Now in a new work environment, Leo strives to use his skills and revive the demon army that is on the brink of collapse.

This evening’s Episodes: “My Next Interview’s at the Demon Queen’s Palace!”

The worlds strongest hero, Leo Demonheart, defeats the demon queen Echidna and her generals, the Elite Four, but later offers his services to Echidna to help rebuild her army, but is violently rejected. After defeating Echidna a rumour spread among humans that Leo was planning to become the next Demon King. Forced by his own terrified citizens, the King reluctantly exiled Leo.

Steins; Gate

Rintaro Okabe is a self-proclaimed “mad scientist” who believes that an international organization is conspiring to reshape the world according to its own interests. He and his friend Itaru Hashida inadvertently create a gadget able to send messages to the past. The discovery and experimentation of this instrument become the catalyst of fundamental alterations to the present. Oblivious of the consequences of their actions, Rintaro and his friends end up creating modifications of grievous proportions. He must then try to find a way to return as close as possible to the original timeline in order to save his precious lab members.

Tonight’s Episodes: “Metaphysics Necrosis ”

Moments after Mayuri’s death, Suzuha rushes into the lab and creates a distraction, allowing Kurisu to use the time leap machine to send Rintaro back in time to 5 pm the same day. Rintaro drives everyone out of the lab before frantically searching for Mayuri.

Demon Slayer (Kimetsu no Yaiba) – season 2

Tanjiro Kamado is a kindhearted and intelligent boy who lives with his family, making money by selling charcoal. Everything changes when his family is attacked and slaughtered by demons (oni). Tanjiro and his sister Nezuko are the sole survivors of the incident. Nezuko has now become a demon, but still surprisingly shows signs of human emotion and thought. Tanjiro becomes a demon slayer to help his sister turn human again and to prevent the same tragedy that happened to him and his sister, from happening to others.

Tonight’s Episode: “Insult ” Mugen Train arc

Tanjiro’s dream intruder finds himself in Tanjiro’s subconsciousness. Figments of his spirit guide the passenger to the core. Suddenly feeling immensely guilty for having desired to destroy the core of a person with such a pure heart, the intruder refuses to do it. Tanjiro awakens, and discovers his peers deep asleep. Nezuko burns the ropes from the wrists of the Demon Slayers, which awakens the passengers.

To Your Eternity (Fumetsu no Anata e) season 1

An omnipotent narrator casts an orb of light to the Earth, watching as this entity copies the shape of a rock and then, many years later, mimics the moss on a rock. When a wolf dies beside the moss, it evolves, taking on the creature’s shape and gaining movement for the first time. As the wolf, the orb observes the dead wolf’s owner, a young man who lives alone on a frozen tundra. The time the orb spends with the boy leaves a mark on the entity as it observes, mimics, and bonds with the boy and then the other creatures it eventually comes across—all while transcending death and living for time immemorial.

Tonight’s Episode: “Awakening”

Fushi is able to protect all civilians from the Nokkers but is unable to defeat them and the area is destroyed. Now wounded, the immortal being returns to his late villager’s youthful form. Gugu and Rean go to the area but it collapses and the former uses his extraordinary strength to protect the latter.

Golden Kamuy

Saichi Sugimoto, a survivor of the battle of 203 Hill in the Russo-Japanese War has become a miner in Hokkaido in order to provide for the widow of his dead comrade, Toraji. He hears a dubious story of hidden Ainu gold stashed by a criminal group, and accidentally finds clues to its location. He decides to search for the gold along with an Ainu girl, Asirpa, who rescues him from Hokkaido’s harsh northern wilderness. Though other parties are also hunting for the gold.

Tonight’s Episode: “Eyes of a Murderer ”

Caught by Ushiyama, Shiraishi is pressured by Hijikata into acting as his mole in Sugimoto’s group. Sugimoto, Asirpa, and Shiraishi hear rumors of Henmi Kazuo, a tattooed prisoner who is also a psychopathic killer.

Cells at Work! Code Black (Hataraku Saibou Burakku)

A newbie Red Blood Cell is one of 37 trillion working to keep this body running. But something’s wrong. Stress hormones keep yelling at him to go faster. The blood vessels are crusted over with cholesterol. Ulcers, fatty liver, trouble (ahem) downstairs… It’s hard for a cell to keep working when every day is a CODE BLACK.

Tonight’s Episodes: “Calves, Pulmonary Embolism, and Quick Thinking” and “Calamity, Athlete’s Foot, and the Meaning of Work”

The red blood cells return to the liver, but due to the body’s excessive drinking, it is run down and the hepatocytes are sickly. They go to the calves and find they are suffering from Deep vein thrombosis. The bullies attempt to murder AA2153 and AC1677 by kicking them into the blood clot, but U-1196 rescues them.
Later AA2153 discovers the genitals are infected with ringworm and the sperm count is low. U-1196 warns that the white blood cell count is low and AA2153 discovers the red blood cell count is low as well. AA2153 is assigned to be a mentor to some rookie red blood cells.
