Screening on Saturday 21st September 2019

Below is the program for the evening of Saturday September 21st, 2019.

This week should be the Spring Equinox, a night-time of equal length to day-time, as daylight waxes and night darkness wanes. Why not watch good anime this night, the official first day of Spring? In order to heighten the joy, your beloved committee has found two preview episodes for this week, out of the large number of anime titles that Japan produces each Season.
As per the audience preference, we are going to split up the two episodes of “Isekai Quartet”, to spread the joy.

Fire Force B.E.M.

On December 14th we will have our end of year marathon screening, and your Suggestions are welcome. The JAFWA committee has already scheduled room for “Akira”, and we have received a request for the movie “Millenium Actress”, as well as the “Girls und Panzer” movie. Any other requests/suggestions?
Be aware, we also intend to run an auction on behalf of our members. Tell us what you want us to auction of yours, preferably well in advance, so we can schedule enough time into the program, as well as inform people so that they can bring plenty of money to bid.

A reminder that JAFWA member Dale is offering to do a bulk import order of Japanese calendars, in order to reduce shipping costs. The 2020 calendars are currently in their pre-order discount period, with such titles as seen here or here, with more to come as the publishing companies confirm their schedules. Is anyone interested in ordering Japanese calendars via Dale?

Fruits Basket (2019 remake)

After a family tragedy turns her life upside down, plucky high schooler Tohru Honda takes matters into her own hands and moves out into a tent. Unfortunately for her, she pitches her new home on private land belonging to the mysterious Sohma clan, and it isn’t long before the owners discover her secret. But, as Tohru quickly finds out when the family offers to take her in, the Sohmas have a secret of their own–when touched by the opposite sex, they turn into the animals of the Chinese Zodiac.

This evening’s Episode: “They’re All Animals! ”

Tohru Honda, after accepting a position in the Sohma household has uncovered their deepest secret. Shigure explains to the surprised Tohru that apart from himself, Yuki and Kyo, 10 other members of the Sohma family would transform into an animal of the Chinese zodiac whenever they feel weak, stressed or being embraced by someone of the opposite gender. Tohru promises to keep the Sohmas’ family secret.

Kanata no Astra (Astra: Lost in Space)

In the year 2063, travelling through space has become commonplace. Eight students from Caird High School, along with one child, set out for a school camp on a nearby planet. However, the students are then mysteriously transported 5,000 light years away from home, with no way to call for help. Aboard an abandoned spaceship they call the Astra, these nine students slowly try to make their way back and figure out why they were transported in the first place.

This evening’s Episode: “Meteor ”

As the Astra travels to the next resupplying stop, Shummoor, Kanata secretly tries to figure out who the saboteur is, but doesn’t know enough about everybody to make a determination. When Funicia recounts how a mysterious man in sunglasses arranged for her adoption into Quitterie’s family, Kanata theorizes that somebody wants them all killed and warns everybody about the possible saboteur hiding among them.

Isekai Quartet

One day, a magic button suddenly appears. The protagonists in KonoSuba, Overlord, Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World, and The Saga of Tanya the Evil all press the button and move to a parallel world — another brand new isekai — where a new story featuring high school life begins.

This evening’s Episodes: “Deadlock! Classmates ” and “Encounter! Classmates ”

After Roswaal tells to the class not to do anything to that threatens their school life, Demiurge explains to the class that his belief is if they try and break any rules of school life, they would be hindering their opportunity to return to their respective worlds. Tanya notices Ainz and starts to suspect he might be the accursed “Being X”, so demands to meet him alone, which infuriates the jealous Albedo. Subaru and Kazuma discover that they both have been transported to another world based on the fact that they have Japanese names.

Rising of the Shield Hero (Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari)

Naofumi Iwatani was summoned into a parallel world along with three other people to become the world’s Heroes. Each of the heroes were respectively equipped with their own legendary equipment when summoned. Naofumi happened to receive the Legendary Shield, the sole defensive equipment, while the others received weapons capable of attacking. Unlike the other heroes who are fully supported by the kingdom and gain several strong allies each, Naofumi’s luck turns to the worse, shunned by everyone from the King to peasants, Naofumi is forced to train as a hero alone while working to make ends meet acquiring only the most pitiful of followers. As he little by little gain the trust and gratitude of the people with their heroic actions, Naofumi and his companions work hard to fulfill their mission as saviors of the world, while unraveling its deepest secrets.

Tonight’s Episodes: “Filolial Queen ” and “A Promise Made ”

As Naofumi’s party confront the Rex-Dragon Rabier released, Melty sees Filo and the monster glow with the same light, deducing how to bait it to a large lake. There they fight the monster, but their attacks have no effect until a massive Filolial Queen appears and easily defeats it. The Filolia Queen takes a human form, introducing herself as Fitoria, and spirits them to a Filolial sanctuary in far away ruins. Fitoria takes Melty hostage to coerce Naofumi to make up with the heroes, and help save the world, something Naofumi has no intention of doing. Meanwhile, Ren and Itsuki follow Naofumi’s lead to investigate the Church, discovering a hidden library, unaware Myne is observing them.

preview item – Fire Force (En’en no Shouboutai, literally “Blazing Firefighting Corps”)

In the year 198 of the Age of the Sun, Tokyo is a crowded cosmopolis. But the world’s most populous city is threatened by devils that cause people to burst into flame at random. The only ones who can stop it are the Pyrofighters, a team of specialized firefighters. The young Shinra, blessed with the ability to ignite his feet and travel at the speed of a rocket, wants nothing more than to be a hero, and knows that this is the place for him. But he’s not the best at following orders.

Tonight’s Episode: “Shinra Kusakabe Enlists ”

Shinra Kusakabe, a youth dubbed “Devil’s Footprints” due to his power to ignite his feet at will, joins Special Fire Force Company 8, a specialized fire brigade of pyrokinetics which destroys Infernals, sympathetically described as putting their human souls to rest. Shinra is quickly dispatched on his first mission to save the wife of a factory owner that has become an Infernal. But Shinra still has to deal with accidentally burning down his house and killing his family with his powers as a child, causing him to be feared and neglected.

Dororo

From Osamu Tezuka’s beloved manga. During the 1470s after the Wars of Onin and Bunmei in the Noto Peninsula of the Hokuriku District, Hyakkimaru, who lacks as much as 48 body parts, obtains a fake body and eliminates 48 monsters that were made from his body to retrieve his missing body parts, and regain his humanity.

Tonight’s Episode: “The Story of Sabame ”

A trip to the hot springs has revealed something rather interesting on Dororo’s back. In a flashback, Dororo’s father, the bandit Hibukuro, drew a part of a map of the location to his hidden money onto the back of his wife, Ojiya, and the rest on Dororo’s back, so they could retrieve it together later. Dororo memorized the map on her mother’s back before she died.

preview item – B.E.M. (Youkai Ningen Bemu)

Three yokai (supernatural creatures), Bem, Bela and Belo, who arrive at a large coastal city and come across an evil atmosphere, which was brought about by immoral behavior by humans and mischief caused by monsters and yokai. They therefore decide to stay in the city, fighting against other monsters and yokai which attack humans, making a few friends along the way.

Tonight’s Episode: “Water ”

One rainy night, a corpse, a chase. Rookie police officer Sonia Summers pursues a suspect, who drowns, one among many. But a strange man with a skull cane keeps appearing. Things are not all they seem in Upper Town, as a murderous puddle of water wreaks havoc. Who is the Professor? Yokai, yokai, everywhere in the shadows.

Attack On Titan (Shingeki ni Kyojin) season 3 part 2

Eren and his companions in the 104th are assigned to the newly-formed Levi Squad, whose assignment is to keep Eren and Historia safe given Eren’s newly-discovered power and Historia’s knowledge and pedigree. Levi and Erwin have good reason to be concerned, because the priest of the Church that Hange had hidden away was found tortured to death, making it clear that the Military Police are involved with the cover-up. Things get more harrowing when the MPs make a move on Erwin and the Levi Squad narrowly avoids capture.

Tonight’s Episode: “Perfect Game ”

The Colossal Titan Bertholdt turns Shiganshina into a sea of flames by scattering burning debris. Armin is frozen by indecision, handing command over to Jean as they head for the river and stay hidden. Outside the wall, the Beast Titan pitches a barrage of stones towards the scouts holding the horses outside the wall, shredding buildings and causing casualties among them.

Jojo no Kimyou na Bouken – Ougen no Kaze (Jojo’s Bizzare Adventure – Golden Wind)

Set in 2001, two years after the events of Diamond is Unbreakable, Koichi Hirose is sent to Italy and tasked by Jotaro Kujo to search for Giorno Giovanna, an aspiring mafia gangster who is a son of Dio Brando. But as Dio possessed the body of Jonathan Joestar at time of his conception, Giorno is technically a Joestar and takes more after them than the father he never knew. The series follows Giorno as he joins the mafia organization Passione, moving up through its ranks with the intention of becoming its boss to improve life in Italy.

Tonight’s Episode: “Get to the Roman Colosseum! ”

Bucciarati and Giorno search police and Interpol databases for a face that matches the one that Abbacchio created, without success. However, a voice within their laptop informs them that the boss’s name is Diavolo and that King Crimson is unbeatable, except possibly by using a Stand arrow which they can collect in Rome. The voice tells them the history of the Stand arrows.
