Screening on Saturday 14^th September 2019

Below is the program for the evening of Saturday September 14^th, 2019.

We welcome you back to September, with 3 new regular series and a preview item. Though technically one of new series had its first episode screened just a couple of weeks ago, so rather than repeating that double-length first episode, we will continue on from episode #2 this week.

Still feeling the glow from the cinematic screening of the latest film form Makoto Shinkai.

On December 14^th we will have our end of year marathon screening, and your Suggestions are welcome. The JAFWA committee has already scheduled room for “Akira”, and we have received a request for the movie “Millenium Actress”. Any other requests/suggestions?
Be aware, we also intend to run an auction for our members. Tell us what you want us to auction of yours, preferably well in advance, so we can schedule enough time into the program, as well as inform people so that they can bring plenty of money to bid.

A reminder that JAFWA member Dale is offering to do a bulk import order of Japanese calendars, in order to reduce shipping costs. The 2020 calendars are being to be listed in dribs and drabs, as seen here or here, with more to come as the publishing companies confirm their schedules. Is anyone interested in ordering Japanese calendars via Dale?

Fruits Basket (2019 remake)

After a family tragedy turns her life upside down, plucky high schooler Tohru Honda takes matters into her own hands and moves out into a tent. Unfortunately for her, she pitches her new home on private land belonging to the mysterious Sohma clan, and it isn’t long before the owners discover her secret. But, as Tohru quickly finds out when the family offers to take her in, the Sohmas have a secret of their own–when touched by the opposite sex, they turn into the animals of the Chinese Zodiac.

This evening’s Episode: “I’m Going ”

Tohru Honda, a high school girl living in a tent in the woods, passes by a nearby house where she has an encouter with her classmate Yuki Sohma and meets the house’s owner, Yuki’s cousin Shigure. Yuki then accompanies Tohru to school, where she is harassed by some of Yuki’s admirers until she is saved by her friends Arisa Uotani and Saki Hanajima. Will the Soma’s allow Tohru to live on their land? Can they prevent her from discovering the Soma “curse”?

Kanata no Astra (Astra: Lost in Space)

In the year 2063, travelling through space has become commonplace. Eight students from Caird High School, along with one child, set out for a school camp on a nearby planet. However, the students are then mysteriously transported 5,000 light years away from home, with no way to call for help. Aboard an abandoned spaceship they call the Astra, these nine students slowly try to make their way back and figure out why they were transported in the first place.

This evening’s Episode: “Wilderness ”

Long ago, a dying woman summons a demon to avenge her and her partner and the demon agrees to her request, deciding it would be an amusing distraction.

In their quest to return home in the old starship they commandeered, the students arrive at the first resupplying stop, the wilderness planet Vilavurs. The students encounter strange forms of wildlife that includes parachute plants and trampoline trees. As the students go around obtaining resources for the next leg of the trip, they encounter the mysterious sphere again…

Isekai Quartet

One day, a magic button suddenly appears. The protagonists in KonoSuba, Overlord, Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World, and The Saga of Tanya the Evil all press the button and move to a parallel world — another brand new isekai — where a new story featuring high school life begins.

This evening’s Episodes: “Come Together! Quartet ” and “Tension! Introductions ”

In the KonoSuba world, Satou Kazuma’s party comes across a big red button. Meanwhile in the Overlord world inside the Great Tomb of Nazarick, Ainz Ooal Gown receives reports from Floor Guardian Demiurge of strange red buttons randomly appearing throughout Nazarick. Both series’ casts are sent to another world featuring a school. They soon learn they are not alone in the new world as the cast of The Saga of Tanya the Evil were also sent to the world. Soon the cast of Re:Zero joins them inside the school. They had better introduce themselves to each other.

Mob Psycho 100

Shigeo Kageyama’s nickname is “Mob”. A slang term for a background character, someone who doesn’t stand out. In truth he is an incredibly powerful psychic who has suppressed his emotions in order to avoid causing a catastrophe. Mob would like nothing better than to live a normal life and have feelings just like anyone else, but with his incredible psychic powers there’s no telling what might happen if he did.

Tonight’s Episode: “An Invitation to a Meeting -Simply Put, I Just Want to be Popular- ”

During Body Improvement Club practice, Mob faints and is left in the clubroom to recover. The Telepathy Club, permitted to stay in the room which is now being used to store bodybuilding equipment, comments that Mob will never be popular even if he trains his body. Distraught, he is intercepted on his way home by a woman in a smiling mask, who informs him that she can help him become popular.

Rising of the Shield Hero (Tate no Y?sha no Nariagari)

Naofumi Iwatani was summoned into a parallel world along with three other people to become the world’s Heroes. Each of the heroes were respectively equipped with their own legendary equipment when summoned. Naofumi happened to receive the Legendary Shield, the sole defensive equipment, while the others received weapons capable of attacking. Unlike the other heroes who are fully supported by the kingdom and gain several strong allies each, Naofumi’s luck turns to the worse, shunned by everyone from the King to peasants, Naofumi is forced to train as a hero alone while working to make ends meet acquiring only the most pitiful of followers. As he little by little gain the trust and gratitude of the people with their heroic actions, Naofumi and his companions work hard to fulfill their mission as saviors of the world, while unraveling its deepest secrets.

Tonight’s Episode: “Raphtalia ”

Still on the run, our party has turned the tables on the corrupt noble Rabier. In a flashback, we see Raphtalia’s home village is destroyed by the first Wave of Chaos, and the villagers are enslaved by Melromarc troops. She and her best friend Rifana are sold to Idol Rabier. Raphtalia ultimately breaks as Rifana dies from illness and Rabier sells her to Beloukas, leading her to Naofumi.

Yakusoku no Neverland (The Promised Neverland)

Emma is an 11-year-old orphan living in Grace Field House, a small orphanage housing her and her 37 siblings. Life had never been better; with food that tasted gourmet, plush beds, snow-white uniforms, and the love of their “Mother” (the caretaker) Isabella, as well the litany of daily exams that Emma always aced with her two best friends Ray and Norman. The orphans are basically allowed to do whatever they want, except to venture out of the compounds or the gate that connects the house to the outside world. Then she finds out the truth. Determined to break out of Grace Field House, Norman and Emma partner up with Ray to peel away at the façade of the farm and find a way to escape with all their other siblings.

Tonight’s Episode: “021145 ”

Sister Krone has been appointed as Mom for Plant Four and has to leave immediately. She meets Grandma at the gate and tries to undermine Isabella without success. Meanwhile, the conspirators implement their plan to investigate the wall, while Isabella informs Ray that she has disposed of Sister Krone and that her deal with him is over. She locks him in a room, then uses her tracking device to detect and find Norman and Emma.

Dororo

From Osamu Tezuka’s beloved manga. During the 1470s after the Wars of Onin and Bunmei in the Noto Peninsula of the Hokuriku District, Hyakkimaru, who lacks as much as 48 body parts, obtains a fake body and eliminates 48 monsters that were made from his body to retrieve his missing body parts, and regain his humanity.

Tonight’s Episode: “The Story of the Blank-faced Buddha ”

Hyakkimaru continues his search for demons while Dororo tries to convince him to visit an onsen. Later, Dororo encounters a woman called Okaka who looks like her mother, near Hakumenfudo, a faceless Buddha statue at a waterfall. He introduces Hyakkimaru and Okaka, who tells the story of a sculptor who carved the Buddha statue but died before completing the face.

Attack On Titan (Shingeki ni Kyojin) season 3 part 2

Eren and his companions in the 104th are assigned to the newly-formed Levi Squad, whose assignment is to keep Eren and Historia safe given Eren’s newly-discovered power and Historia’s knowledge and pedigree. Levi and Erwin have good reason to be concerned, because the priest of the Church that Hange had hidden away was found tortured to death, making it clear that the Military Police are involved with the cover-up. Things get more harrowing when the MPs make a move on Erwin and the Levi Squad narrowly avoids capture.

Tonight’s Episode: “Descent ”

As Bertholdt the Colossal Titan waits in his hiding place, he thinks back to the Battle of Trost where he and the others were forced to leave a defenseless Marco to be eaten by Titans after he overheard him and Reiner discussing a strategy to stop Eren plugging the hole in the wall. When the injured Armored Titan lets out a roar, signalling the Beast Titan to throw a barrel containing Bertholdt into Shiganshina.

preview item – Vinland Saga

set in Dane-controlled England at the start of the 11th century, and features the Danish invaders of England commonly known as Vikings. The story combines a dramatisation of King Cnut the Great’s historical rise to power with a revenge plot centered on the historical explorer Thorfinn, the son of a murdered ex-warrior.

Tonight’s Episode: “Somewhere Not Here ”

In viking battle, the warrior Thors abandons his men. Years later, Thorfinn, the son of Thors is a young boy living in Iceland. He longs for adventure and is eager to know more about the world. Thorfinn dreams of a land of paradise called Vinland that he hears about from the great adventurer Leif Erickson. Thorfinn leads a peaceful life with this father Thors, his sister Ylva and his wife Helga. One day, Thors saves a runaway slave.

Jojo no Kimyou na Bouken – Ougen no Kaze (Jojo’s Bizzare Adventure – Golden Wind)

Set in 2001, two years after the events of Diamond is Unbreakable, Koichi Hirose is sent to Italy and tasked by Jotaro Kujo to search for Giorno Giovanna, an aspiring mafia gangster who is a son of Dio Brando. But as Dio possessed the body of Jonathan Joestar at time of his conception, Giorno is technically a Joestar and takes more after them than the father he never knew. The series follows Giorno as he joins the mafia organization Passione, moving up through its ranks with the intention of becoming its boss to improve life in Italy.

Tonight’s Episode: “Beneath a Sky on the Verge of Falling ”

The dying Risotto uses his last bit of strength to grab the boss and attempt to trick Aerosmith into shooting the both of them, but King Crimson erases the time in which the bullets were shot to avoid them, killing Risotto. Abbacchio uses Moody Blues to search through the past on the Costa Smeralda beach, trying to recreate the boss’s face. meanwhile Bucciarati and Narancia examine Risotto’s corpse, then unexpectedly find a young boy tied behind a rock and missing blood, with his lips sewn together.
