Screening

Below is the program for the evening of Saturday September 16^th, 2017.

This week, the last week before our old enemy the sun gains ascendancy in the day/night cycle, we have a couple of preview items for your consideration. As always, Japan produces for more anime than JAFWA could ever hope to screen, thus as part of JAFWA’s mission to promote the culture of Japan as expressed through anime we try and show first episodes of some of the more interesting examples of anime.

Mind you, it is beginning to be the golden age of anime here in Perth, as there are so many options to see anime around town – currently Celebrate Studio Ghibli, soon Fireworks, and we have just been informed that even the live action version of “Tokyo Ghoul” will hit Perth cinemas on September 21^st.

But what is a Golden Age if we do not pause to reflect on how we got here? Starting this week, as a beloved retro item, we start regular screening of the classic original “Macross”, all the way from 1982. Enjoy!

The Japanese calendar season is upon us, and as usual the MC Dale is doing bulk orders of 2018 calendars. There is still a discount for pre-ordering the calendars. Anybody wishing to order Japanese anime 2018 Calendars this year? Though Dale says he can order any calendar from that site if you wish to expand your horizons beyond anime.

We are taking suggestions for what JAFWA should screen on our End of Year marathon screening on Saturday 16^th December. What would you like to see?

Synopsis

Atom: The Beginning

This series is a prequel to Osamu Tezuka’s “Astro Boy” series, depicting the events up until the birth of Astro Boy. Two prodigies, Umatarou Tenma and Hiroshi Ochanomizu, have spent endless amounts of time researching robots, eventually producing the robot A106.

This evening’s Episode: “Battle Royal”

Tenma is confused by Dr Lolo’s generosity in donating the part that A106 needs to continue competing in the Robo Wrestling tournament. But Dr Lolo has a further announcement. Meanwhile, that kind-hearted child of science, A106 has some questions about the battle he is to face. But will anyone hear him, and answer?.

Little Witch Academia

Akko Kagari enrolls into Luna Nova Academy, a school for young witches, after being inspired at a young age by a witch named Shiny Chariot, and often spends her days hanging with her classmates, Lotte and Sucy. However, she has trouble paying attention in class, doesn’t know how to ride her broom, and is often looked down upon for admiring Chariot, whom many believe gives the wrong impression about witches.

This evening’s Episode: “Chariot of Fire”

Upon hearing that Croix and Chariot were classmates, Akko goes to Croix-sensei, who asks her to bring the Shiny Rod to her laboratory in the New Moon Tower for analysis. Fearing for Akko’s safety, Ursula-sensei heads to the New Moon Tower and fights her way through Croix’s defenses to confront her.

Udon no Kuni no Kiniro Kemari (The Golden Furball of Udon Country) (aka Poco’s Udon World)

Souta Tawara was the son of a noodle restaurant owner. Born and raised in Kagawa Prefecture (a.k.a the Udon Prefecture), he had been living an uneventful life in Tokyo as a web designer. After his father’s demise he returns home to find the restaurant having gone out of business and a young boy that he names Poco hiding there. He grows fond of him and decides to take care of him and constantly worries about what would happen to Poco once he leaves. He regrets leaving his home and his father because of his selfishness and mentions it to his big sister when she expresses her regret of being unable give their father a grandchild. His time spent with Poco often reminds him of how his father lovingly took care of him, which further adds to his regrets.

This evening’s Episode: “Reservoir”

On the eve of the anniversary of Souta’s mother’s death, his sister Rinko comes to cook and friend Nakaji has the troubling news that he is going to a marriage interview. A walk around the local reservoir revives old memories, heartfelt thoughts, and a new secret.

retro series from 1982 – Choujikuu Yousai Makurosu (Super Dimension Fortress Macross)

In 1999 a city-sized alien spacecraft crashes in South Ataria Island on Earth. Over the course of 10 years the military organization U.N. Spacy reverse-engineers its technology and rebuilds the spacecraft, naming it the SDF-1 Macross. In 2009 at the launch ceremony of the Macross, a space war fleet from the alien Zentraedi arrives in the solar system and identifies the Macross as a former battleship used by their enemies. Mistakes happen. Thus begins the war between Human and Zentraedi, led by the brave crew of the Macross.

This evening’s Episode: “Booby Trap”

In 2009 at the launch ceremony of the Macross, a young civilian stunt pilot, Hikaru Ichijyo, comes to visit the Macross upon U.N. Spacy pilot Roy Focker’s request. However, things don’t go to plan, and war breaks out.

Lupin the Third – Part 4

The internationally infamous Arsène Lupin, master thief and unrepentant womanizer, continues to seek out ever more challenging heists to pull off. With him goes an eccentric band of misfits; Jigen the scruffy sharpshooter, Fujiko the femme fatal of dubious loyalty, and Goemon the stoic swordsman. And close on their heels no matter where Lupin and his gang end up, the unrelenting Inspector Zenigata. Determined to put Lupin and his cohorts in prison for the seemingly endless list burglaries and thefts they have already pulled off.

Tonight’s Episode: “Until the Full Moon Passes”

Zenigata is assigned to protect Elena Gotti, the famous wife of a recently deceased billionaire, Roberto Gotti. In fact it’s said that she’s the only one to know where Roberto hid all his money, so her life is continuously threatened by many robbers, included Lupin.

Five girls live in 19th century London, a city within the Albion Kingdom divided into east and west by a large wall. The girls serve as undercover spies enrolled as students at the prestigious Queen’s Mayfair school. The girls make use of their individual abilities to remain active in the underground world of disguise, espionage, infiltration, and car chases..

This evening’s Episode: “Case 13 Wired Liar”

Eric, a scientist, seeks to defect to the Commonwealth. Ange and her fellow spies Dorothy, Beatrice, Chise, and Princess smuggle him to safety inside the Queen’s Mayfair School, a prestigious academy where they are posing as students. However, Eric also requests that they bring his little sister Amy as well.

Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! (God’s Blessing on this Wonderful World)

Kazuma Satou wasn’t looking for anything beyond his simple high school shut-in existence. But one untimely death later and he finds himself before the goddess Aqua with the chance to be deposited in a fantasy kingdom that is in need of heroes to defeat a demon lord. Things don’t look good from the moment he arrives and so Kazuma decides to ditch the whole “save the world” thing and just try to become rich and live comfortably. Unfortunately, the various eccentric companions he is saddled with aren’t really helping with that goal.

Tonight’s Episode: “A Price for This Cursed Sword!”

Wanting to earn some money despite only hard quests being available, Aqua takes on a request to purify a lake filled with alligator monsters. On the way back, the group encounter Kyouya Mitsurugi, another human Aqua had sent to this fantasy world, who is less than pleased with the way Aqua is seemingly being treated.

The story follows two men, priests Hiraga Josef Kou and Robert Nicholas, who work for the mysterious organization The Seat of the Saints, an element of the Vatican dedicated to investigating alleged miracles.

This evening’s Episode: “Through God’s Succour, My Eyes Are Opened”

In South America, at a prestigious church with attached academy, a young novitiate nun suffering stigmata and claiming to be pregnant with the savior brings has the Vatican send two experts to verify if a miracle has happened. But are there are more mysterious goings-on happening at this apparently holy institution?

Souta Mizushino is a young high school student and anime fan who dreams of writing his own light novel. While looking to an anime for inspiration, the iPad he is watching it on sputters and drags him into the anime’s world, where he witness a battle between the anime’s character Selesia and a mysterious girl wearing a military uniform. After returning with Selesia, Souta discovers that other characters from different stories and forms of media were also brought to the real world, with some of them aligned with the military uniform girl, who promised them the ways to end the strife in their worlds and a way back home, unaware of her true intentions.

Tonight’s Episode: “The Monster Under the Eaves We cannot decide where we go but you can.”

As Selesia and Meteora undergo treatment to recover from their injuries, Souta still feels himself responsible for what happened, so Rui appears and takes him for a ride on Gigas Makina to cheer him up. After returning to the others, Souta reveals that he knew Setsuna, the creator of Altair, and blames himself for her death..

Jojo no Kimyou na Bouken – Stardust Crusaders (Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure – Stardust Crusaders)

It’s 1989. Fifty odd years have passed since Joseph Joestar did battle with the immortal Pillar Men and now his Japanese grandson, Jotaro Kujo, finds his life turned upside down. A strange new ability awakens within his bloodline, granting him great power but threatening to kill his mother.

… An ancient enemy of the family has returned.

Tonight’s Episode: “The Miasma of the Void, Vanilla Ice, Part 3”

Polnareff is about to be destroyed by Vanilla Ice’s stand, when Iggy uses the last ounce of his strength to pull him out of the way. Angered, Polnareff takes advantage of the fact Vanilla Ice had been turned into a vampire by DIO. Meanwhile, Suzi pays a visit to Japan to visit Holly, having fully understanding that her daughter’s life is in danger.
