Screening on Saturday 31^st July 2021

The honeymoon session with new (old) JAFWA committee in charge went rather well, with quite a few people enjoying the bonus item we screened. The committee would appreciate it if other such items were brought to our attention.

Please continue giving appropriate obesience to your beloved committee members. I am sure that Drew, Glenn, Mark, Sally, Dale and Greg would appreciate it.

This being the last JAFWA session in July, expect usual end of month Survey during the Dinner Break this week. We have had a few preview episodes recently, that you will need to decide between. And we will throw in one more this evening – since last week’s preview episode was half-length, this week’s preview episode will be double-length.
Followed by the monthly Member’s Prize draw.

Japanese 2022 calendars are starting to show up for pre-order. Anybody interested in being part of a bulk order this year?

Annual General Meeting resolutions

Resolutions that occurred during the AGM on July 17^th include:

1. Experiment with earlier hours during the coldest part of Winter. We are attempting to change the bookings for August for this trial.
2. Have a celebratory Dinner for the JAFWA committee members and general members, to be held on the evening of Saturday December 18^th 2021, in lieu of a screening.

We will be attempting to implement these as soon as practical.

Currently we are looking for suggestions for a location for the dinner, and we are taking expressions of interest for attendees.
We will need to make the booking by the end of October, so places and attendance by then.

Covid-19 Safety Precautions

We continue taking precautions to limit the possible future waves of CoVid-19, and we ask that you co-operate and even help where possible with our efforts to keep you safe – some social distancing, extra cleaning with antiseptic, library under limited access, etc. Also, we must ask that anyone unfortunate enough to be infected to not attend JAFWA until they are contagion free.
– Help is always welcome during set-up and pack-up due to the extra duties imposed by COVID-19 precautions.
– Please arrive early to confirm personal details due to COVID 19 regulations. There will be Contract Tracing, either by the SafeWA app on your keitai (mobile phones), or by signing in at the contact tracing sheet near the entry.

Ascendance of a Bookworm (Honzuki no Gekokujou: Shisho ni Naru Tame niwa Shudan o Erandeiraremasen)

The story follows Motosu Urano, a book-loving post-secondary student and soon-to-be librarian who ends up crushed to death beneath a pile of books during an earthquake. With her dying breath, she wishes to be reincarnated in a world where she can read books forever. Urano awakens in the body of a weak, five-year-old girl named Myne in a world where books are scarce and only available to elites. Myne, retaining her memories from her previous life, decides to create and print her own books so that she can read again.

This evening’s Episode: “Harvest Festivals and Staying Home ” season 2

While en route to the library, Myne encounters a blue-robed priest loyal to the High Bishop. Myne peacefully steps aside, but later finds the library destroyed and blames him for the ordeal. After consulting with Ferdinand, Myne learns that all the blue-robed priests are away for the Harvest Festival, so she decides to clean the library herself and organize it however she wishes.

Hashiba Kyouya is an aspiring game developer but things did not go well for him. His company went bankrupt, he loses his job and left him only returning to his hometown. He recalls his decision to attend a regular university instead of an arts college, all the “Safe” choices that resulted in failure. Then Kyoya goes to sleep…

I’m a Spider, So What? (Kuma desu ga, nanika)

After a Japanese classroom was destroyed by a mysterious explosion all the students reincarnated as humans on a fantasy world except for a female student who had the lowest reputation on the classroom, she was reincarnated as a spider monster. Being the weakest monster on the dungeon she need to survive using all her human intellect and courage.

Tonight’s Episode: “Am I, Dead? ”

As they are both princes Hugo’s attempt to kill Shun is covered up so it doesn’t start a war between their two kingdoms. Shun reminisces about his life in Japan when they were all good friends when Hugo was egotistical but harmless. He also remembers the class loner, Hiiro, being bullied by Fei. Nameless learns her second mind has been spending time learning magical theory, allowing her to begin using actual magic.

retro – Shoujo Kakumei Utena (Revolutionary Girl Utena)

Utena Tenjou, a teenage girl who expresses her desire to be a prince through her strong-willed personality and tomboyish manner of dress. She finds herself drawn into a series of sword duels at Ohtori Academy, to win the hand of Anthy Himemiya, a mysterious girl known as the “Rose Bride” who possesses the “power to revolutionize the world”.

Tsuwabuki’s secret diary is discovered, chronicling recent events in Nanami’s life and listing at least 24 of Tsuwabuki’s plans to win Nanami’s heart.

Fire Force (En’en no Shouboutai, literally “Blazing Firefighting Corps”) – season 2

In the year 198 of the Age of the Sun, Tokyo is a crowded cosmopolis. But the world’s most populous city is threatened by devils that cause people to burst into flame at random. The only ones who can stop it are the Pyrofighters, a team of specialized firefighters. The young Shinra, blessed with the ability to ignite his feet and travel at the speed of a rocket, wants nothing more than to be a hero, and knows that this is the place for him. But he’s not the best at following orders.

Tonight’s Episode: “Smoldering Malevolence ”

Shinra believes the internal voice came from the Tabernacle. Scop explains the history of the Tabernacle and how a young woman in black robes taught them to speak and repaired the structure. Suddenly the group are attacked by cloaked sentient Infernals who have also set booby traps in the surrounding area.

Urasekai Picnic (Otherside Picnic)

College student Sorawo Kamikoshi has been exploring the strange dream-like world she calls the Otherside ever since she stumbled upon it during her days as an urban explorer, but her most recent trip has gotten her into serious trouble. That’s when she meets Toriko Nishina, a strange young woman searching the Otherside for her missing friend. Toriko helps Sorawo out of her predicament, and Sorawo falls into helping Toriko in her mission. But each journey into the Otherside brings strange new dangers and skills, and Sorawo isn’t sure that the search is worth it.

Tonight’s Episode: “Resort Night at the World’s Edge ”

After a night of drunken revelry, Sorawo and Toriko find themselves at a beach resort in Okinawa. Even though Toriko wants to continue their impromptu vacation, Sorawo insists they take a cab back home. However, the two girls fall asleep after seeing a strange hermit crab, and wake up at a beach on the Otherside with the cab in ruins.

Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World (Ri:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu) season 2

Slacker Subaru has been mysteriously transported into a fantasy world, and involved in the politics of royal ascension, and magical terrorist expression. After learning more behind the Death Loop and Witches of Sin, Subaru vows to save Emilia and his friends from further doom.

Tonight’s Episode: “I Know Hell”

Garfiel launches a counter-attack against Satella with an army of Ryuzu clones, but it fails and he is killed. She then begins driving Subaru mad with her miasma, but he escapes by committing suicide. After respawning, Subaru worries for Emilia and is happy to see that she’s still herself.

Moriarty the Patriot (Yuukoku no Moriaati)

James Moriarty is an orphan who assumes the name William James Moriarty when he and his younger brother are adopted into the Moriarty family. As a young man, he seeks to remove the ills caused by England’s strict class system.

Tonight’s Episode: “The Two Detectives Act 1 ”

Holmes has a nightmare where he willingly kills Jefferson. He later admits to Watson that despite his fame thanks to the Drebber case, he prefers to solve a bigger mystery. While he is alone, Holmes wonders whether or not he should have accepted Jefferson’s offer.

Attack On Titan (Shingeki ni Kyojin) season 4 part 1

Young Eldian Warrior candidates Gabi Braun and Falco Grice, seeking to inherit Reiner’s Armored Titan four years after the failed mission to claim the Founding Titan. As Marley’s dominance over competing nations begins to weaken due to the development of anti-titan weaponry, they plan to invade Paradis to develop their military using the resources on the island and also recover the Founding Titan. However, Eren Yeager and the Survey Corps have reached the Marley shoreline

Tonight’s Episode: “Brave Volunteers ”

Three years prior to the attack on Marley, Eren’s Attack Titan destroyed the first Marleyan scout ship and its crew were captured. Yelena and other Marleyan conscripted deserters who call themselves the “Anti-Marleyan Volunteers”, offered help to the Eldians, backing Zeke Jaeger’s plan to carry out the Rumbling in order to support them against Marley. Yelena and Onyankopon provided them with schematics of Marleyan guns and advanced weaponry.
