Academic seeks help from anime fans

Laurinda van Tonder is currently completing her Master’s degree in Applied Linguistics at the University of Johannesburg in South Africa. Her research dissertation looks at the language learning potential of subtitled media with specific focus on the unique phenomenon of anime fans who managed to learn Japanese from watching anime. She believes that there are features specific to anime and/or anime fans that are responsible for the perceived increase in language learning (which are not found with other types of subtitled media and their viewers).

In order to investigate this, one component of her research is an online questionnaire addressing general viewing habits as well as their engagement with the anime community. As Anime and Manga Societies are one of the few places where anime fans gather, we are an ideal place to find eligible respondents.

JAFWA members are encouraged to, if possible, assist Laurinda by completing her online questionnaire
