June comes to an end, as has that fandom fixture and JAFWA friend for many years Tokyo Underground has closed. We thank Bronwyn for her many years of wonderful service and best wishes for her activities in the future (who knows, she may finally have enough free time to attend JAFWA).
With the ending of this first month of Winter (according to the Bureau of Meteorology) and you know what that means – it is the monthly Member’s Prize draw!
Also, we will be having quick survey during the Dinner Break to see which items are enjoyed by the membership, so please be honest and scalar.

For those of you who are interested, the Japanese Film Festival has gone from showing a series of Japanese movies online, to now showing TV episodes.

This week, the long-awaited final movie of the final part of the final season of “Attack on Titan” is going to be finally shown (though the end credits suggest the possibility of continuation). We realise that Supanova – Perth may be happening this weekend but you won’t be missing attending JAFWA, as there is a whole other day you can attend the Convention.

If you don’t want to sponsor an entire night like Lindsay did in March, and the one coming in November, there is the other scheme for our signed up members. On the night nearest your birthday, you can nominate something to play during the Dinner Break (limited to 30 minutes max). You may have to help us source this material, so plan in advance please.

The other big decision coming up is the JAFWA annual election to be held during the Dinner Break of the JAFWA screening of July 20^th. This will be later in the evening after the AGM that we need all signed up JAFWA members to attend when it starts in the afternoon at 2PM in the same Hall.

AGM Adenda item

Fellow JAFWA Member,

The JAFWA Board of Committee formally announces that on 20 July 2024 – the day of the JAFWA 2024 AGM – the Board will propose changes to the JAFWA Constitution and By-Laws to update how the club operates and how the Committee may operate.

The details to be discussed at the AGM are:

• Changes to the wording of section 8 of the By-Laws regarding the usage of Cheques to move monies of a value of greater than $100, and associated terminology, to be updated to include the electronic transfer of funds and associated terminology; and
• Clarification as to whom the JAFWA committee may loan monies, the terms of the amount loaned, and instances where said loans require the approval of the JAFWA Membership.

These details will be clarified at the AGM, however to ensure that we have a greater number of members available to vote, the vote will be by SGM to be held at 6:00pm during the dinner break.

Barring a resurgence of COVID-19 pestilence, these fannish events of interest are scheduled to happen:

• From Thursday June 27^th-30^th 2024 — Anime movie Blue Lock – Nagi appears at various cinemas, for those of you familiar with the TV series.
• Weekend June 29^th-30^th 2024 — Supanova – Perth at Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre.
• Monday July 8^th 2024, ~6:30PM — Luna Double Feature at Luna Cinemas Leederville – “Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind” and “Ponyo” $15.
• Weekend July 13/14^th 2024, 9AM-4PM — Anime in the Valley at Swan Settlers Market in Herne Hill. It is a bit of a hike so make certain to leave early to reach JAFWA in time (Winter hours).

Non Non Biyori Nonstop (season 3)

In the countryside small town village of Asahigaoka, a place lacking many of the conveniences that people from the city are accustomed to. The nearest stores are a few miles away and one of the local schools consists of only five students, each of whom is in a different grade of elementary or middle school. Hotaru Ichijo, a fifth grader from Tokyo, transfers into Asahigaoka Branch School and has to adjust to countryside life with her new friends.

This evening’s Episode: “I Got Drunk and Remembered“

Renge hangs out with Shiori (Police officer’s daughter), acting as a proper “big sister”, and later plays dodgeball with Hotaru, Komari, and Natsumi. Talking about Shiori soon getting a little sister, and Komari and Natsumi’s brother graduating middle school, makes Renge take her role as a “big sister” even more seriously. Kazuho invites Kaede (Candy Store) for drinks, who gets sloshed and hides her condition from Renge.

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End (Sousou no Furiiren)

For ten years, elf mage Frieren traveled with Himmel the hero, Heiter the priest, and Eisen the dwarf warrior as they quested to destroy the demon king. At the end of their journey, Frieren set out on her own, not quite understanding how differently time flows for her versus her human companions. Reunited after fifty years only to see them wither and die, Frieren begins to ponder the nature of connections at a time when it’s already too late to say goodbye.

This Evening’s Episode: “Aura the Guillotine“

Fern and Stark manage to get Granat to safety in the town church, where he warns that Aura’s trump card is a magic artifact called the Scales of Obedience, which measure the amount of mana she and opponent possesses. The one with the greater amount of mana can then dominate the loser, which is how she has created an army of puppets. Frieren destroys some of Aura’s puppets, and seeing that she still has no understanding of humanity, concludes that she can kill her like a monster.

Where Does the Doomsday Train Go? (“Shuumatsu Train Doko e Iku?”)

In a town in a not-so-ordinary countryside, there is a big and strange occurrence happening to its residents. But a young girl named Shizuru Chikura has a strong desire to see her lost friend again. Shizuru and three other girls board an abandoned train, and they set out to the outside world, where survival is not certain. They’ll discover what awaits them at the last stop of the “Doomsday Train.”

This evening’s Episode: “Why Are You Hiding Your Butt?“

As the girls contemplate how long it will take to reach Ikebukuro, Akira hides the growth on her back. When the train arrives at Musashi-Yokote Station, the girls are forced to keep moving when they come under attack from a herd of humanoid goats. That night, the girls decide to take turns driving the train to give Shizuru a chance to rest, and Akira remains in denial that something is growing on her back, fearing it is a mushroom.

The Apothecary Diaries (Kusuriya no Hitorigoto)

Apothecary Maomao was just out collecting herbs when she was kidnapped by procurers for the Imperial harem, an easy way for unscrupulous people to get money by having “relatives” go work in the Rear Palace. Hiding her skills and knowledge, Maomao hopes to just glide by, earning as little as possible for her kidnappers during her term of service, but such is not to be: when royal infants begin dying, Maomao can’t resist letting people know the cause. This catches the eye of the far-too-handsome Jinshi, who elevates Maomao from laundry maid to poison taster to the Emperor’s favorite concubine. So much for flying under the radar…

Tonight’s Episode: “Lakan“

Maomao refuses to fully accompany Jinshi to his destination because she, as she is dressed fancily, refuses to blow his cover; and heads home instead for a few days off. Back home, she later awakens from a nightmare, which is actually a scene from her infancy. Her adoptive father, Luomen, sends her on an errand to the Rokushoukan, actually to tend to a woman at its annex. The woman is revealed to be Maomao’s mother suffering from syphilis.

Spice and Wolf: merchant meets the wise wolf (“Ookami to Koushinryou: merchant meets the wise wolf”)

The life of a travelling merchant is a lonely one, a fact with which Kraft Lawrence is well acquainted. Wandering from town to town with just his horse, cart, and whatever wares have come his way, the peddler has pretty well settled into his routine—that is, until the night Lawrence finds a wolf goddess asleep in his cart. She strikes up a bargain with the merchant to lend him the cunning of “Holo the Wisewolf” to increase his profits in exchange for taking her along on his travels. Lawrence soon learns, though, that having an ancient goddess as a traveling companion can be a bit of a mixed blessing.

This Evening’s Episode: “Wolf Incarnate and Obedient Lamb“

The revealed Holo is now an implicit threat from the Church. Lawrence and Milone Trading Company seek to overcome the threat Medio Trading Company and their backers the Royal Family pose is the currency swindle deal. Who will profit, and who will lose out? The power of the Wolf incarnate can not be under-estimated. But what of Holo’s humiliation?

Oshi no Ko (“My Favorite Idol” or “Their Idol’s Children”)

Goro Amemiya works as an OB-GYN in a small rural town and is a huge fan of upcoming idol Ai Hoshino. After an unexpected meeting, Goro ends up dying suddenly only to be reborn as one of Ai’s children; a boy named Aquamarine Hoshino (or Aqua for short). He and his twin sister Ruby then grows up as one of show-biz’s biggest secrets.

Tonight’s Episode: “First Time”

Aqua is caught off guard by Akane’s performance and is left to reflect on what exactly his feelings for her and Ai are. After having a short talk with Kana, he is able to sort out his feelings, realizing he has no particular attraction to Akane herself. However, upon learning that she is skilled at profiling, Aqua decides to manipulate her to make use of her skills.

Attack On Titan (Shingeki ni Kyojin) season 4 final part

Young Eldian Warrior candidates Gabi Braun and Falco Grice, seeking to inherit Reiner’s Armored Titan four years after the failed mission to claim the Founding Titan. As Marley’s dominance over competing nations begins to weaken due to the development of anti-titan weaponry, they plan to invade Paradis to develop their military using the resources on the island and also recover the Founding Titan. However, Eren Yeager and the Survey Corps have reached the Marley shoreline.

Tonight’s Movie: “The Battle of Heaven and Earth / A Long Dream / Toward the Tree on That Hill” part 2 of 2

The Scouts and Warriors lands on Eren’s rib cage, and incapacitate the Beast Titan realizing that it is just a shell with Zeke nowhere to be found. Before Armin has a chance to transform, he is captured in a Titan’s mouth. Suddenly, countless versions of the Nine Titans of the past appear on Eren’s back, created by Ymir Fritz to defend him. Just as the Scouts and Warriors are nearly defeated, Annie and Gabi appear on the back of Falco’s new flying Jaw Titan. Meanwhile, Armin discovers Zeke in the Paths. Armin and Zeke have a conversation about the meaning of life and Armin convinces Zeke to share his viewpoint and the two call on the deceased Titan shifters throughout the series to help the alliance. During the battle the centipede-like organism, the source of all Titan power, is released. Long held secrets must be revealed.
