JAFWA operating in Winter hours! Program starts at 4:15PM!

August is upon us! Hopefully you remembered to observe the anniversary of the nuclear bombings and Hiroshima and Nagasaki with due solemnity. Lest we forget.

This week two new regular series begin. One of them is a continuation of “Jujutsu Kaisen”, whose first season we finished screening in July. The other is a retro series, noticeably older than “Tenchi Muyo”, to help illustrate how anime has changed over the years – in “City Hunter” we see a non-politically-correct anime from before the era of mobile phones, home computers, and the internet we recognise today.
And just to pile on the goodness, we preview an episode from the anime adaption of a manga series I am enjoying – the zombie apocalypse is not suppose to be so relaxing and fun.

A reminder of our current concern – what do we call our new computer? Traditionally the JAFWA computer, with its small form factor is known as “chibi“, though for official purposes that only addressed JAFWA’s first dedicated computer. The one that broke down in July 2023 since being in service from 2016, was officially “Shin-chibi“. So what do we call this even smaller form factor computer? Lindsay has suggested “micro-chibi“, while I am partial to “chibi-chibi“. Please provide worthwhile suggestion for the official name (“Chibi McChibi Chibiface”, and variants thereof, is only worth getting hurt).

The Devil is a Part-Timer season 3 (Hataraku Maou-sama)

Having been thwarted in his attempts to conquer Ente Isla, the mighty demon lord Satan escapes through a portal with his general Alsiel… And winds up in modern day Tokyo with very little magical power left. His resources for world domination now consist of a tiny rented apartment and a job at a fast food restaurant. To survive and find a way to return to Ente Isla, Satan adopts the name Sadao Maou and finds that the Hero Emilia is in similar circumstances. And now they have to look after a very special child.

Ningen Fushin – aka Apparently, Disillusioned Adventurers Will Save the World (Ningen Fushin no Boukensha-tachi ga Sekai o Sukuu You Desu)

Veteran adventurer Nick’s life is falling apart. Despite all the knowledge and expertise he’s devoted to his adventuring party, his respected leader kicked him out, his girlfriend dumped him, and his teammates shamelessly accused him of embezzlement. Tired, heartbroken, and looking for a drink, Nick chances upon a few kindred spirits who are jaded as he is. Together, these disillusioned adventurers form an unstoppable team out to save their bleak, depressing world.

This evening’s Episode: “The Labyrinth of Bonds”

As requested by the Guild, our protagonists enter the Labyrinth of Bonds and locate the sword, which possesses intelligence and explains he can only be wielded by people with strong bonds of friendship. Sword is disappointed they plan to sell him. Removing Sword activates a golem made of liquid Nano machines that cannot be damaged.

retro item – City Hunter

Ryo Saeba is a “sweeper” who is always found chasing beautiful girls and a private detective who works to rid Tokyo of crime, along with his associate or partner, Hideyuki Makimura. Their “City Hunter” business is an underground jack-of-all-trades operation, contacted by writing the letters “XYZ” on a blackboard at Shinjuku Station.

Tonight’s episode: “One Cool Sweeper: XYZ is a Dangerous Cocktail ”

A highschool girl gets shot with a silenceg pistol from a white BMW. Seeking revenge and/or justice, her big sister contracts Ryou.

Ancient Magus Bride season 2 (Mahou Tsukai no Yome)

Chise Hatori, 15 years old. Lost, without hope, and without family, she is bought for money … not by another person, but by a non-human sorcerer named Elias. Though she hesitates, she begins life anew as his apprentice and future wife. Now grown more confident in her role as a sleigh beggy, Chise was able to accept Elias and herself, if not necessarily everything about her situation. After Cartaphilus fell back into a slumber that would not last forever, Chise was able to go back to her regular life. Then she receives an invitation from a mutual aid organization for mages called the College.

Tonight’s Episode: “Birds of a feather flock together. I”

The silver haired girl, Philomena, explains she suffers from nervous fear, so Chise prescribes calming tea. Philomena returns to class with her classmate Veronica. Alice reveals she now has her own familiar, Will-o-the-Wisp, who took a liking to her despite being a sorcerer. Chise attends her first class with Professor Narcisse to begin learning the basics of sorcery. Elias, disguised as a young woman, teaches the class how to begin using magic by negotiating with magical creatures.

Demon Slayer (Kimetsu no Yaiba) – season 3

Tanjiro Kamado is a kindhearted and intelligent boy who lives with his family, making money by selling charcoal. Everything changes when his family is attacked and slaughtered by demons (oni). Tanjiro and his sister Nezuko are the sole survivors of the incident. Nezuko has now become a demon, but still surprisingly shows signs of human emotion and thought. Tanjiro becomes a demon slayer to help his sister turn human again and to prevent the same tragedy that happened to him and his sister, from happening to others.

Tonight’s Episode: “Awful Villain ” Swordsmith Village arc

Tanjiro slashes Hantengu’s neck but fails to cut through it due to his blade’s diminishing flames. He is then confronted by the manifestation of Hantengu’s hatred, Zohakuten, whose Blood Demon Art is giant wooden dragons. Elsewhere, the demon Gyokko enters Kozo’s shed to find him and Hotaru, who is polishing Tanjiro’s blade. The Mist Hashira, close to drowning death, suddenly sees Tanjiro, who reassures him that despite his mistakes, someone will come and help.

Jujutsu Kaisen season 2

Satoru Gojo and Suguru Geto were not always enemies. Long before they had what was supposed to be their final encounter during the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons, the pair were fellow students, rivals, and friends. In another world, they would have been the twin shining stars of Jujutsu Sorcery, but one fateful event destroyed any hope of that ever happening. Turn back the clock to witness the mission that drove them to curse one another beyond even death.

Tonight’s Episode “Hidden Inventory” season 2

In 2006, third year student Utahime Iori and sorcerer Mei Mei are assigned to investigate a haunted house that many people have gone missing from. They are rescued by second year students Satoru Gojo and Suguru Geto. Gojo and Geto are hired by Master Tengen to protect a girl named Riko Amanai, who who is need to counteract Master tengen’s Immortality cursed technique.

Surviving a zombie apocalypse beats being a wage slave any day. After spending years slaving away for a soul-crushing company, Akira’s life has lost its luster. But when a zombie apocalypse ravages his town, it gives him the push he needs to live for himself. Now Akira’s on a mission to complete all 100 items on his bucket list before he…well, kicks the bucket.

This evening’s Episode: “Akira of the Dead”

Akira Tendo is a young office worker who hates his job. Three years ago, an excited Akira came to Tokyo to work after graduation but increasingly becomes disillusioned after learning his company ruthlessly exploits their employees. Despite being depressed, he continues to stay due to his coworker, Saori Ohtori, the only one who treats him with kindness. When a zombie outbreak hits Tokyo, rather than despair, Akira greets it with happiness since he is finally free. He heads to Ohtori’s apartment to rescue her only to discover he was too late as she and his boss have turned into zombies.

In/Spectre season 2 (Kyokou Suiri)

When she was still just a girl, Kotoko was kidnapped by yokai. These spirits made her into a powerful intermediary between the spirit and human worlds, but this power came at a price: an eye and a leg. Now, years later, she watches out for dangerous yokai while developing feelings for a young man named Kuro, who is also special: an incident with a yokai has given him healing powers. He’s surprised when Kotoko asks him to team up to handle renegade yokai, preserving the thin line between reality and the supernatural.

This evening’s Episodes: “The Yuki-Onna’s Innocence”

Kotoko, the Goddess of Wisdom, knows who committed the murder that Masayuki is accused of. But the murderer is someone Masayuki would not expect, and the wisdom of Kotoko is deep, and terrifying. But not as terrifying as Kotoko’s boyfriend Kuro.

Golden Kamuy

Saichi Sugimoto, a survivor of the battle of 203 Hill in the Russo-Japanese War has become a miner in Hokkaido in order to provide for the widow of his dead comrade, Toraji. He hears a dubious story of hidden Ainu gold stashed by a criminal group, and accidentally finds clues to its location. He decides to search for the gold along with an Ainu girl, Asirpa, who rescues him from Hokkaido’s harsh northern wilderness. Though other parties are also hunting for the gold.

Tonight’s Episode: “Steamship” season 4

Asirpa gets information from a local man that a strange tattooed peddler was seen at the Utashinai coal mines, selling candy, but after investigating him and another stranger, they decide leave by paddle boat for Sapporo. The boat is attacked and captured by a former prisoner, Fusataro Osawa known as Botaro the pirate, who is also searching for the Ainu gold.

Vinland Saga

Set in Dane-controlled England at the start of the 11th century, and features the Danish invaders of England commonly known as Vikings. The story combines a dramatisation of King Cnut the Great’s historical rise to power with a revenge plot centered on the historical explorer Thorfinn, the son of a murdered ex-warrior.

Tonight’s Episode: “Dark Clouds” season 2

A slave at Kjallakr’s farm on Ketil’s estate escapes after killing his master and his sons and setting fire to the farmhouse. He then heads off to find his wife, although suffering from a stab wound. At Sverkel’s farm, Einar contemplates his future, possibly with Arnheid.
