JAFWA’s first screening of 2023!
We trust that you are feeling well and excited as the anime drought ends.

Once more with the traditional Japanese greeting of the New Year – Akemashite omedetou gozaimasu!

We start at our usual time after 5PM for our regular program from last year, with 2 new series beginning and a retro feeling preview item. So many series, never enough time to schedule them all.

Hoping you had a wonderful Festive Season, and are feeling good and not too anime-deprived.

Cash for Containers

As people may have noticed, JAFWA collects the recyclable containers (cans and bottles) that are disposed of by our attendees. It helps in a small way.

The Devil Is a Part-Timer! (Hataraku Maou-sama!) season 2

Having been thwarted in his attempts to conquer Ente Isla, the mighty demon lord Satan escapes through a portal with his general Alciel… And winds up in modern day Tokyo with very little magical power left. His resources for world domination now consist of a tiny rented apartment and a job at a fast food restaurant. To survive and find a way to return to Ente Isla, Satan adopts the name Sadao Maou and finds that the Hero Emilia is in similar circumstances.

This evening’s Episode: “The Devil Learns That Choshi (and the World) Are Bigger that He Knew”

Later that night, Emi meets up with Maou and his group at the lighthouse to explain everything she learned from Camio. They reveal that Olba travelled to the demon realm and spurred discourse among the demons by informing them of the sacred sword in Tokyo, and how it will allow them to rule over all, giving them a Yesod fragment to help track it down; these hardliners being led by a demon known as Barbariccia. Time for Maou-sama to power up.

Ascendance of a Bookworm (Honzuki no Gekokujou) season 3

The story follows Motosu Urano, a book-loving post-secondary student and soon-to-be librarian who ends up crushed to death beneath a pile of books during an earthquake. With her dying breath, she wishes to be reincarnated in a world where she can read books forever. Urano awakens in the body of a weak, five-year-old girl named Myne in a world where books are scarce and only available to elites. Myne, retaining her memories from her previous life, decides to create and print her own books so that she can read again.

This evening’s Episode: “The Gift from the Blue-Robed Priest and Going Home”

The tour for the Spring Prayers has ended, and learns somethings from the attack. However, back at the cathedral and orphanage, Sylvester has a request that is potentially fearful. It does give the High Priest a headache and so many questions. History threatens to crumble. But for the time being Main will treasure her family.

Spy x Family part 2

In order to ensure World Peace, a master spy who has to “build a family” to execute a mission, not realising that the girl he adopts as his daughter is a telepath, and the woman he agrees to be in a marriage with is a skilled assassin.

This evening’s Episode: “Carry Out the Griffin Plan / Fullmetal Lady / Omelet Rice”

When Anya fails to connect with Damian through Bond, she schemes to win his favor by helping him during the arts and crafts contest, which he hopes to win to impress his father. Meanhile Sylvia’s daily life as a spy is shown as she evades the SSS to meet with Twilight and discuss Operation Strix. While in a flashback explains how Yor’s little brother Yuri has gained a durable constitution.

preview item – Urusei Yatsura (2022)

The unluckiest and most lecherous young man alive is Ataru Moroboshi. When aliens decide to invade Earth, Ataru is randomly selected to defend his planet by playing a game of the aliens’ national sport, tag. Should he win, the world shall be saved. However, Ataru is motivated for far less noble reasons, as the one he plays against is revealed to be the curvaceous alien princess, Lum.

Tonight’s Episode: “Young Love on the Run / Between a Rock and a Hard Place ”

When aliens from planet Oni come to invade Earth, Ataru Moroboshi is chosen to save his planet if he wins a game of tag against their princess, Lum. Because of a misunderstanding, Lum thinks that Ataru has proposed to her, much to his girlfriend Shinobu Miyake’s irritation. In the following days, Lum tries to thwart Ataru and Shinobu’s attempts at communicating, resulting in chaos and destruction in the city.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Die Neue These (Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu Die Neue These Kaikou) second season

In humanity’s distant future, two interstellar states – the monarchic Galactic Empire and the democratic Free Planets Alliance – are embroiled in a never-ending war. The story focuses on the exploits of rivals Reinhard von Lohengramm and Yang Wen-li as they rise to power and fame in the Galactic Empire and the Free Planets Alliance respectively.

This evening’s Episode: “Amritsar”

After the disasterous invasion of the Empire, the Free Planets Alliance Navy chooses the Amritsar Starzone as it new battlefield, with what remains of the fleets. With their backs to the wall, can Yang Wen-Li pull out a miracle and save them from the onslaught of the Imperial Navy under the command of Reinhard von Lohengramm? Both sides have their share of good commanders, and poor.

Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun (Made in Abyss: Retsujitsu no Ougonkyou) season 2

An orphan girl named Riko who lives in the town of Ousu on an island in the sea of Beoluska. The city surrounds a strange, giant hole going deep into the earth, which is commonly called the Abyss. The Abyss harbours artefacts and remnants of a civilisation long gone, and is therefore the popular hunting spot for so-called Cave Raiders, who undertake arduous and dangerous descends into the mist-filled pit to recover whatever relics they can find. However, the deeper one goes into the Abyss, the more one is afflicted by a progressively fatal malady called the Curse of the Abyss; few who have descended into the lower regions have returned to tell of their experiences.

Tonight’s Episode: “The Form the Wish Takes ”

In the present, Reg meets Faputa again and asks that she provide a body part to help buy Nanachi’s freedom. Faputa tears off one of her arms and gives it to Reg, reminding him of his promise to her to help destroy Iruburu and its inhabitants. Back in the past, Irumyuui’s body continued to mutate, grow, and give birth, with Wazukyan continuing to take her failed babies to turn them into food.

Jujutsu Kaisen

Negative human emotions – regret, bitterness, shame – are the source of all curses that infest the world and hide in everyday life, leading to death in the worst cases. Yuji Itadori, a particularly strong young man, attempts to save a friend from a curse, only to wind up consuming the special grade curse of Ryoumen Sukuna’s finger. Only a curse can eliminate another curse, and Yuji’s career as a cursed person who must exorcise curses has now begin.

This evening’s Episode: “Ryomen Sukuna”

Yuji Itadori is a high school student with incredible athleticism and sports talent. Yuji’s grandfather tells him to use his strength to help others just before his death. Megumi Fushiguro, a student from Tokyo Metropolitan Magic Technical College, is tasked with searching for a “Cursed Object”, a finger of Ryomen Sukuna, a powerful supernatural monster known as a “Curse”. Megumi tracks Yuji down, having sensed the finger’s energy from him.

Tokyo Revengers

Watching the news, Takemichi Hanagaki learns that his girlfriend from way back in middle school, Hinata Tachibana, has died. The only girlfriend he ever had was just killed by a villainous group known as the Tokyo Manji Gang. He lives in a crappy apartment with thin walls, and his younger boss treats him like an idiot. At the height of his rock-bottom life, he suddenly time-leaps twelve years back to his middle school days. To save Hinata, and change the life he spent running away, hopeless part-timer Takemichi must aim for the top of Kanto’s most sinister delinquent gang.

Tonight’s Episode: “Rechange”

Draken and Mikey fight over who is Takemichi’s friend and destroy his childhood items in the process, but Takemichi manages to end their fight by accident. After their friendship is rekindled, Takemichi attends a summer festival on August 3 as Hinata’s date. During their date, Yamagishi calls Takemichi, warning him that Draken may be in danger.

Golden Kamuy

Saichi Sugimoto, a survivor of the battle of 203 Hill in the Russo-Japanese War has become a miner in Hokkaido in order to provide for the widow of his dead comrade, Toraji. He hears a dubious story of hidden Ainu gold stashed by a criminal group, and accidentally finds clues to its location. He decides to search for the gold along with an Ainu girl, Asirpa, who rescues him from Hokkaido’s harsh northern wilderness. Though other parties are also hunting for the gold.

Tonight’s Episode: “The Immortal Sugimoto Harakiri Show” season 3

Sugimoto’s group arrives in Toyohara, centre of Karafuto, and a young boy steals a bag containing the copy of Gansoku’s tattoo. Koito chaces him to the Yamada Circus and the group offer to join the circus hoping publicity may let Asirpa know that Sugimoto is alive. Koito is the only one with real talent, as an acrobatic, so Sugimoto offers to perform the “harikiri” act while Tsukishima and Tanigaki are relegated to join the “dancing girls” act under the harsh dance mistress Fumie.

SummerTime Rendering

Upon hearing of Ushio’s death, Shinpei returns to his hometown of Wakayama City on Hitogashima and reunites with his childhood friend’s family. The funeral goes smoothly, but under the surface something strange is brewing on the island.

Tonight’s Episode: “Decision”

Ushio tells Hizuru about the memories of child Hizuru they saw, theorizing that the section of Haine that broke off when she devoured Ryuunosuke is what became Ushio today. Ushio is afraid that she’ll turn evil like Haine did, but Hizuru promises to kill her if it happens. Mio and Shadow-Mio have a heart-to-heart. Shinpei hasn’t slept since he began looping. Nezu deals with his demons. Shide rejuvenates his Shadow body. Now to thin out the Shadow numbers before the massacre at the festival.
