Screening on the evening of Saturday, December 10th 2022

This is it!
JAFWA‘s final screening for 2022.

Join us for an evening of popular anime before taking a Holiday Break and reconvening on January 14th 2023.

We start at our usual time after 5PM for our non-regular program, filled with suggestions from our long time members.
We have assembled a program mainly of request items from yesteryear, plus one very special movie. We went through hoops getting permission from the rights holder in order to screen “The Dragon and the Freckled Princess” (aka “Belle“), but you should really enjoy it.

And then, it is time to wish, to one and all, Season’s Greeting, Happy Holidays and Best Wishes, before we return again in January 2023.

Usagi Drop

Going home from his grandfather’s funeral, thirty-year-old Daikichi is floored to discover that the old man had an illegitimate child with a younger lover. The rest of his family is equally shocked and embarrassed by this surprise development, and not one of them wants anything to do with the silent little girl, Rin Kaga. In a fit of anger, Daikichi decides to take her in himself. As Daikichi nurtures Rin, he started to understand the struggle while at the same time the joy of parenting.

This evening’s Episode:The Rindou Flower Girl

After hearing that his grandfather, Souichi Kaga, has died, Daikichi Kawachi and his relatives gather at Souichi’s home for the funeral. There, he meets a young girl named Rin, who is allegedly Souichi’s illegitimate daughter. Following the funeral, the relatives refuse to take in the girl and opt to put her up for adoption. Daikichi, disgusted with their attitudes, decides to take Rin into his care.

Little Witch Academia

Akko Kagari enrolls into Luna Nova Academy, a school for young witches, after being inspired at a young age by a witch named Shiny Chariot, and often spends her days hanging with her classmates, Lotte and Sucy. However, she has trouble paying attention in class, doesn’t know how to ride her broom, and is often looked down upon for admiring Chariot, whom many believe gives the wrong impression about witches. One day, as a teacher instructs the class to explore a dungeon and retrieve rare treasures, Akko finds the Shiny Rod that belonged to Chariot…

Belle (Ryuu to Sobakasu no Hime literally translates as “The Dragon and the Freckled Princess”)

Teenager Suzu Naito lives in rural Japan with a lost passion for singing and writing songs. When Suzu was young, she witnessed her mother rescue a child from a flooding river at the cost of her own life, causing her to resent her mother for “abandoning” her for a stranger’s child and eventually grow distant from her father. She remains in contact with a group of older choir teachers who were her mother’s friends. She is alienated from most of her classmates, with the exception of her childhood friend and self-appointed protector Shinobu Hisatake, on whom she has a crush; popular girl Ruka Watanabe; sportsman classmate Shinjiro “Kamishin” Chikami; and her genius best friend Hiroka “Hiro” Betsuyaku.

Urged by her best friend Hiro, Suzu signs into the popular virtual metaverse known as “U” and is appointed a beautiful avatar with freckles (through the AI engine’s biometric analysis) whom she names “Bell”, the English translation of her own name. Upon logging into U, she finds herself capable of singing again. With the assistance of Hiro, who has appointed herself Bell’s manager and producer, Bell becomes a big hit and people start to refer to her as “Belle”, meaning “beautiful” in French.

During one of Belle’s concerts, an infamously strong and near-unbeatable user called “The Dragon” (or “The Beast”) arrives. This prompts a vigilante group named the Justices, to begin hunting the Dragon, accusing him of disturbing the peace of U. Intrigued by the Dragon, Suzu begins to gather information about him. She discovers that he is popular amongst children, who consider him to be their hero, particularly a shy boy named Tomo who was in the news following his mother’s death. Belle searches U for the Dragon and is led to the Dragon’s hidden castle by a mysterious angel avatar.

Jormungand

Koko Hekmatyar, a young arms dealer who sells weapons under HCLI, an international shipping corporation that secretly deals in the arms trade. As one of the company’s unofficial weapon dealers, she secretly sells weapons in many countries while avoiding the local authorities and law enforcement as most of her work is actually illegal under international law. Traveling with her is her team of bodyguards who are mostly composed of ex-military veterans. Her latest addition to her crew is Jonah, a seemingly emotionless child soldier who is skilled in combat yet ironically hates arms dealers. Jonah joins Koko as he wishes to find the arms dealer responsible for his family’s death. What follows is Koko and her crew’s escapades around the world.

Tonight’s Episode:Gunmetal Calico Road

Koko Hekmatyar personally recruits Jonathan “Jonah” Mar before they travel en route to Eastern Europe, where a local government official has kept a shipment of HCLI MiG-29 fighter upgrades under lockdown from his country’s air force for fear it would lead to regional tension with its neighbors. Jonah protects Koko from the government’s elite Voshkod 6 unit, with Sofia “Valmet” Velmer and Lehm Brick backing them up, as Koko heads to the harbor to secure the MiG-29 upgrades which forces the official to give up.

Berserk

Set in a medieval Europe-inspired dark fantasy world, the story centres on the characters of Guts, a lone mercenary, and Griffith, the leader of a mercenary band called the Band of the Hawk. Themes of isolation, camaraderie, and the question of whether humanity is fundamentally good or evil pervade the story, as it explores both the best and worst of human nature.

Tonight’s Episode:The Black Swordsman

A girl is being assaulted in a bar when Guts walks in. He kills all the assailants but one and orders him to tell his master, the Baron, that the Black Swordsman is coming. Guts later finds and kills the Baron and removes a demonic relic called a Behelit from around his neck. In the end of the episode it flashes back to when Guts kills Bazuso and meets Griffith.

Goblin Slayer

In a world of fantasy, adventurers come far and wide to join the Guild, in order to complete contracts for whatever jobs are available. An inexperienced priestess joins her first adventuring party, but comes into danger after her first adventurer contract involving goblins goes wrong. After the rest of her party is wiped out, she is saved by a man known as Goblin Slayer, an adventurer whose only purpose is the eradication of goblins with extreme prejudice. And when rumours of his feats begin to circulate, there’s no telling who might come calling next.

Warning – These episodes are not be suitable for minors, without mature guidance

Tonight’s Episode:The Fate of Particular Adventurers

A young Priestess joins a group of rookie adventurers who decide to raid a cave infested with goblins. Things quickly go awry when the inexperienced party is ambushed by goblins, resulting in all of them save for the Priestess being killed, raped, or captured. The Priestess is rescued by the arrival of Goblin Slayer, who swiftly kills the goblins attacking her. She decides to follow Goblin Slayer as he proceeds deeper into the cave.
