A reminder that the Japanese Film Festival is upon us. Book tickets early or risk missing out

The month of October draws to an end, though the program at JAFWA starts a two more new regular series – Firstly the second season of “Spy x Family”, and the long requested next season of “Ascendance of a Bookworm”.
“Golden Kamuy” will not be on this week, but we intend to see its return in November. This week enjoy two episode of “Tokyo Revengers”.

Also, we have our monthly member’s draw, and the monthly survey.

Don’t forget that we have gone back to our normal 5:15PM start.

Japanese Calendars

It is that time of year again – when Japanese calendars for 2023 are available order. The JAFWA MC is personally taking orders up till the end of October (ie this week). I have received an order already, and I will probably fulfill the order from here. It is early yet, so not all of the calendars have been listed so far. The link I gave pointed to only Anime calendars, but the left menu shows other categories if you are interested.
This site may be slightly more up-to-date in titles being listed.

The Australian dollar is not buying much these days, but probably more than last year, and if we bundle our orders together, we should be able to get cheaper shipping rates. So long as we don’t miss the pre-order period.

Cash for Containers

As people may have noticed, JAFWA collects the recyclable containers (cans and bottles) that are disposed of by our attendees. It helps in a small way.

Dates of Interest

Barring a resurgence of COVID-19 pestilence, these fannish events of interest are scheduled to happen:

• October 2022 onwards — JAFWA’s returns to normal hours, where we start (~5:15PM) and finish (~10:45PM), an hour later than Winter.
• October 29^th 2022, 10AM to 4PM — Kai-con’s Artist Market. Free entry to Citiplace Community Centre just outside Perth Train station.
• from Thursday November 3^rd 2022 — Animated movies “One Piece: Red” in cinemas, including Luna Leederville.
• Saturday November 5^th 2022, 9AM to 4PM — JAFWA fund raising Bunnings sausage sizzle at Cannington Bunnings. Volunteers requested.
• November 5^th and 6^th 2022, 9AM to 5PM — Anime in the Valley. Located at the Swan Settlers Market in Herne Hill. Free entry.
• November 19^th to 20^th 2022, 10AM to 6PM — [ KaiCon ] Kaiga Anime Convention 2022 at Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre.
• November 26^th 2022 — JAFWA’s 32^nd birthday, and Event Afternoon.
• Sunday November 27^th 2022 — Collectors Zone Toy and Hobby Fair at ECU Sports Fitness Centre, Joondalup.
• Saturday December 10^th 2022, 5:15PM to 10:30PM — JAFWA’s final screening of the year. Will be a non-regular program, so we are taking suggestions for what one-off items you want to be screened that night.
• Saturday January 14^th 2023 — as the Solstice festivities wane, JAFWA returns for a new year!

The Devil Is a Part-Timer! (Hataraku Maou-sama!) season 2

Having been thwarted in his attempts to conquer Ente Isla, the mighty demon lord Satan escapes through a portal with his general Alciel… And winds up in modern day Tokyo with very little magical power left. His resources for world domination now consist of a tiny rented apartment and a job at a fast food restaurant. To survive and find a way to return to Ente Isla, Satan adopts the name Sadao Maou and finds that the Hero Emilia is in similar circumstances.

This evening’s Episode: “The Devil and the Hero Go to the Amusement Park as Advised”

At the amusement park, Emi questions Maou’s intentions regarding Alas Ramus and his remaining troops in the demon realm, receiving a vague answer that confuses her. When watching a hero show, a crescent on Alas Ramus’ forehead suddenly re-appears, forcing them to leave. After Maou steps away, the mysterious white-haired woman appears, and using a ring helps remove the pain from Alas Ramus.

Spy x Family part 2

In order to ensure World Peace, a master spy who has to “build a family” to execute a mission, not realising that the girl he adopts as his daughter is a telepath, and the woman he agrees to be in a marriage with is a skilled assassin.

This evening’s Episode: “Project Apple”

While purchasing a dog for Anya, Loid is called away to an urgent mission to stop a terrorist group of Ostanian students, led by Keith Kepler, who plan to use dogs as bomb carriers to assassinate Westalian Foreign Minister Brantz. Meanwhile at an animal adoption fair, Anya reads into the mind of a white dog and receives a vision of her family.

Ascendance of a Bookworm (Honzuki no Gekokujou) season 3

The story follows Motosu Urano, a book-loving post-secondary student and soon-to-be librarian who ends up crushed to death beneath a pile of books during an earthquake. With her dying breath, she wishes to be reincarnated in a world where she can read books forever. Urano awakens in the body of a weak, five-year-old girl named Myne in a world where books are scarce and only available to elites. Myne, retaining her memories from her previous life, decides to create and print her own books so that she can read again.

This evening’s Episodes: “The Beginning of Winter” and “The Story About Winter Stays and the Future”

Myne is within sight of her dream, and has become a valuable, of very junior, member of the Church hierarchy. With access to thew Church library! However her family needs to do a lot of work to prepare for the approaching Winter. Commercial realities have caused her to sell the copies of her first book. Opportunities appear, but the Ink Guild is fighting for its vested interests, causing issues. But being constrained to the cathedral brings homesickness, lonely disappointment, threats and possible family changes.

Shadow’s House season 2

In a Western-style mansion on a cliff lives the aristocratic, faceless Shadow family. They live together with lifelike doll attendants who serve as their faces. After finishing their “debut,” Kate, Emilico and three other pairs who started with them begin a new life as adults. With the mystery of the “Shadows House” still unsolved, a new incident occurs in the children’s wing. Kate and Emilico, whom the Star Bearers suspect of being malcontents, investigate a mysterious robed Shadow who may be the culprit.

Tonight’s Episodes: “Night Sky ” and “Individual Investigations ”

While Kate is meeting with the other shadows, Emiliko and Shaun continue mapping the Shadows House and wonder about their lives outside its walls. Putting together what they know, they start deducing some of the House’s mysteries, then looking at the starry sky triggers a memory.
While in their midnight meeting, Louise and Patrick join Kate and John’s investigation into the scorches incident’s culprit (episode 3). Louise and Lou gather information about other shadows soot powers, and Louise decides to learn more on how to reach adulthood. The next morning the Rejoicing Party is held four days too early, and later Kate tries to undo the coffee’s brainwashing effects on Emiliko but it is different from the previous time.

Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun (Made in Abyss: Retsujitsu no Ougonkyou) season 2

An orphan girl named Riko who lives in the town of Ousu on an island in the sea of Beoluska. The city surrounds a strange, giant hole going deep into the earth, which is commonly called the Abyss. The Abyss harbours artefacts and remnants of a civilisation long gone, and is therefore the popular hunting spot for so-called Cave Raiders, who undertake arduous and dangerous descends into the mist-filled pit to recover whatever relics they can find. However, the deeper one goes into the Abyss, the more one is afflicted by a progressively fatal malady called the Curse of the Abyss; few who have descended into the lower regions have returned to tell of their experiences.

Tonight’s Episode: “Friend ”

Faputa confronts Reg, and he vaguely recalls that he had previously met her in the past. Wary of eyes of the villagers, Faputa abducts Reg and takes him to her hideout. However, Faputa is confused and hurt that Reg has no memories of her, and expresses her jealousy at Reg accompanying Riko instead. Riko recovers from her food poisoning and heads out to search for Reg and Nanachi.

Tokyo Revengers

Watching the news, Takemichi Hanagaki learns that his girlfriend from way back in middle school, Hinata Tachibana, has died. The only girlfriend he ever had was just killed by a villainous group known as the Tokyo Manji Gang. He lives in a crappy apartment with thin walls, and his younger boss treats him like an idiot. At the height of his rock-bottom life, he suddenly time-leaps twelve years back to his middle school days. To save Hinata, and change the life he spent running away, hopeless part-timer Takemichi must aim for the top of Kanto’s most sinister delinquent gang.

Tonight’s Episodes: “Resolve” and “Return”

In order to protect him, Takemichi decides to take Takuya’s place. Takemichi is beaten brutally, but his refusal to give up catches the attention of Manjiro Sano (nicknamed Mikey), the leader of the Tokyo Manji Gang, and his vice-captain, Ken Ryuguji (nicknamed Draken).
After returning to the present, Takemichi learns that Mikey and Draken’s arrival had prevented his friend Atsushi Sendo (nicknamed Akkun) from stabbing Kiyomasa and going to jail. Now a higher-ranked Tokyo Manji Gang member and the owner of a hostess club, the now adult Akkun has a strange confession.

SummerTime Rendering

Upon hearing of Ushio’s death, Shinpei returns to his hometown of Wakayama City on Hitogashima and reunites with his childhood friend’s family. The funeral goes smoothly, but under the surface something strange is brewing on the island.

Tonight’s Episode: “Friends”

Shinpei and Ushio are looped back to the moment he revealed himself as a time traveler to Hizuru and Nezu. Hizuru realizes, that Shinpei’s eye, which allows him to loop is made from Shadows and that Ushio granted him this power. They decide to work together to the end, to avoid failure, after which Ushio shows them her memories from previous loops. Unfortunately, the Shadows have some understanding of the time loops.
