A reminder that the Japanese Film Festival is upon us. Book tickets early or risk missing out

The month of October still has an extra change to the program at JAFWA, in the form of a cutting-edge devilishly popular preview episode, and a special to whet your appetite for the “Dr Stone” 3^rd series expected in 2023.
Two more new regular series will start the week after.
And don’t be sad about the second series of “Golden Kamuy” this week, for we will see its return in November.

Don’t forget that we have gone back to our normal 5:15PM start.

Japanese Calendars

It is that time of year again – when Japanese calendars for 2023 are available order. The JAFWA MC is personally taking orders up till the end of October. I have received an order already, and I will probably fulfill the order from here. It is early yet, so not all of the calendars have been listed so far. The link I gave pointed to only Anime calendars, but the left menu shows other categories if you are interested.
This site may be slightly more up-to-date in titles being listed.

The Australian dollar is not buying much these days, but probably more than last year, but if we bundle our orders together, we should be able to get cheaper shipping rates. We have probably missed the pre-order period.

Cash for Containers

As people may have noticed, JAFWA collects the recyclable containers (cans and bottles) that are disposed of by our attendees. It helps in a small way.

Dates of Interest

Barring a resurgence of COVID-19 pestilence, these fannish events of interest are scheduled to happen:

• October 2022 onwards — JAFWA’s returns to normal hours, where we start (~5:15PM) and finish (~10:45PM), an hour later than Winter.
• October 29^th 2022, 10AM to 4PM — Kai-con’s Artist Market. Free entry to Citiplace Community Centre just outside Perth Train station.
• Saturday November 5^th 2022, 9AM to 4PM — JAFWA fund raising Bunnings sausage sizzle at Cannignton Bunnings. Volunteers requested.
• November 5^th and 6^th 2022, 9AM to 5PM — Anime in the Valley. Located at the Swan Settlers Market in Herne Hill. Free entry.
• November 19^th 2022 — JAFWA’s 32^nd birthday.
• November 19^th to 20^th 2022, 10AM to 6PM — [ KaiCon ] Kaiga Anime Convention 2022 at Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre.
• Sunday November 27^th 2022 — Collectors Zone Toy and Hobby Fair at ECU Sports Fitness Centre, Joondalup.
• Saturday December 10^th 2022, 5:15PM to 10:30PM — JAFWA’s final screening of the year. Will be a non-regular program, so we are taking suggestions for what one-off items you want to be screened that night.
• Saturday January 14^th 2023 — as the Solstice festivities wane, JAFWA returns for a new year!

The Devil Is a Part-Timer! (Hataraku Maou-sama!) season 2

Having been thwarted in his attempts to conquer Ente Isla, the mighty demon lord Satan escapes through a portal with his general Alciel… And winds up in modern day Tokyo with very little magical power left. His resources for world domination now consist of a tiny rented apartment and a job at a fast food restaurant. To survive and find a way to return to Ente Isla, Satan adopts the name Sadao Maou and finds that the Hero Emilia is in similar circumstances.

This evening’s Episode: “The Devil and the Hero Inconceivably Become Parents”

After the revelation of Alasa Ramus’ parentage, the group try to figure out what to do about Alas Ramus, theorizing she isn’t directly connected to the angels, due to her having an Ente Islan name. Maou agrees to let her stay at their place and take care of her. Later, Chiho buys baby supplies for Alas Ramus to help make herself useful, still partially anxious over not yet receiving an answer from Maou after her confession.

special item – Doctor Stone: Ryusui

Modern society is lost when a mysterious light leaves everyone petrified in stone. Thousands of years in the future, super genius Senku awakens and begins restoring civilisation with his Kingdom of Science. Now that science has triumphed over brawn, and humanity is united, it is time to face the new challenge – determine what was the cause of the petrification.

Tonight’s movie: “Ryusui ”

In order to rech the location of the Petrifying Glow that destroyed the world, near South America, The Kingdom of Science must build sailing ships. Fortunately they find an expert sailor to explain how it is doen – Ryusui. But this rich boy’s superb skills comes with his own problems.

Shadow’s House season 2

In a Western-style mansion on a cliff lives the aristocratic, faceless Shadow family. They live together with lifelike doll attendants who serve as their faces. After finishing their “debut,” Kate, Emilico and three other pairs who started with them begin a new life as adults. With the mystery of the “Shadows House” still unsolved, a new incident occurs in the children’s wing. Kate and Emilico, whom the Star Bearers suspect of being malcontents, investigate a mysterious robed Shadow who may be the culprit.

Tonight’s Episodes: “Potential Suspects ” and “A Midnight Meeting of Peers ”

Oliver explains that the scorches incident was intentionally caused. The Star-Bearers decide to handle things without reporting to Edward, as the loss of the special coffee puts their positions in jeopardy. They blame the whole incident on the Belles’ living-dolls and give them harsh punishment. While making a map of the house’s children’s wing, Kate, Emiliko, John and Shaun spot an old cabin and investigate it, finding the rather eccentric members of the research team inside. Oliver and Olly show keen interest in Emiliko, call her “super living doll” and test her physical abilities.

Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun (Made in Abyss: Retsujitsu no Ougonkyou) season 2

An orphan girl named Riko who lives in the town of Ousu on an island in the sea of Beoluska. The city surrounds a strange, giant hole going deep into the earth, which is commonly called the Abyss. The Abyss harbours artefacts and remnants of a civilisation long gone, and is therefore the popular hunting spot for so-called Cave Raiders, who undertake arduous and dangerous descends into the mist-filled pit to recover whatever relics they can find. However, the deeper one goes into the Abyss, the more one is afflicted by a progressively fatal malady called the Curse of the Abyss; few who have descended into the lower regions have returned to tell of their experiences.

Tonight’s Episodes: “Village of the Hollows ”

Majikaja takes Riko, Reg, and Nanachi to a craftsman who is carving Riko’s White Whistle into a new shape that can utilize its full power. He then shows the trio the rest of the village, which is protected from the curse, but the Hollows that live within it cannot leave. He also explains that the village runs on the trade of “value”.

Rising of the Shield Hero (Tate no Y?sha no Nariagari) season 2

Naofumi Iwatani was summoned into a fantasy world along with three other people to become the world’s Heroes. Each of the heroes were respectively equipped with their own legendary equipment when summoned. Naofumi happened to receive the Legendary Shield, the sole defensive equipment, while the others received weapons capable of attacking. Unlike the other heroes who are fully supported by the kingdom and gain several strong allies each, Naofumi’s luck turns to the worse, shunned by everyone from the King to peasants, Naofumi is forced to train as a hero alone while working to make ends meet acquiring only the most pitiful of followers.

Tonight’s Episode: “Humming Fairy”

Arriving in Sikul, Naofumi demands Kizuna return them to rescue Raphtalia, but she finds the location has been locked preventing them from teleporting, further enraging Naofumi. Kizuna introduces them to the people of Sikul, who react in apprehension upon learning Naofumi’s from another world, to her confusion.

In a world where Devils (Akuma) are born from human fears. Devils are usually dangerous and malevolent, their power is proportional to the fear they incite. However, humans can form contracts with them to use their power, and there are individuals specializing in hunting and employing them, called Devil Hunters. A Devil may, in certain conditions, inhabit the body of a dead human, gaining some of their memories and personality; such a creature is called a Fiend.

This evening’s Episodes: “Dog & Chainsaw”

16-year-old Denji has been burdened with a massive debt left behind by his deceased father, who committed suicide. To repay the debt, he works as a Devil Hunter with Pochita, the dog-resembling Chainsaw Devil. After finishing a job for a yakuza boss, Denji tells Pochita about his dream to live a peaceful life and settle down with a partner. The boss takes Denji to an abandoned warehouse for a job, where he reveals his group has allied themselves with the Zombie Devil, who has Denji dismembered. Denji’s blood seeps into Pochita’s mouth, and Denji has a vision of Pochita telling him that he will become Denji’s heart in exchange for seeing Denji live out his dream.

Golden Kamuy

Saichi Sugimoto, a survivor of the battle of 203 Hill in the Russo-Japanese War has become a miner in Hokkaido in order to provide for the widow of his dead comrade, Toraji. He hears a dubious story of hidden Ainu gold stashed by a criminal group, and accidentally finds clues to its location. He decides to search for the gold along with an Ainu girl, Asirpa, who rescues him from Hokkaido’s harsh northern wilderness. Though other parties are also hunting for the gold.

Tonight’s Episode: “Call Out” season 2

The blue-eyed man confirms he is Wilk after seeing Asirpa’s makiri, but says he will only reveal the location of the gold to Asirpa. Sugimoto and Wilk are suddenly shot in the head by Ogata, and Kiroranke betrays and stabs Inkarmet, while Shiraishi flees with Asirpa. Has Immortal Sugimoto betrayed his name?

SummerTime Rendering

Upon hearing of Ushio’s death, Shinpei returns to his hometown of Wakayama City on Hitogashima and reunites with his childhood friend’s family. The funeral goes smoothly, but under the surface something strange is brewing on the island.

Tonight’s Episode: “Bloody Nigh”

Tokiko explains that Haine is Hiruko and for generations their family has served her by feeding her dead bodies from their family clinic. Haine eats the body of Miura and almost eats Ushio’s body, which was replaced with a fake before the cremation. Tokiko reveals she serves Haine because she promised to resurrect their dead mother once she regains her powers.
