Screening on Saturday 20^th February 2021

JAFWA continues in February, without the compulsory masks! Now you will be able to see if your MC is attempting to lip-synch, and you will have the opportunity to exercise your smiling muscles at your fellow JAFWAite.

We will have two preview episodes this week, to broaden your experience of Japanese anime. In order to fit these two preview episodes in, we will bump “Promised Neverland” and “Mahjong Legend Akagi” to next time.

As a matter of interest, Madman has sales on until the end of the month.

Several people have seen the new Studio Ghibli movie Earwig and the Witch at the cinemas, and have given positive reviews.

And many await the “Demon Slayer” movie Mugen Train dues out at the cinemas at the end of this month.

We continue taking precautions to limit the possible second wave of CoVid-19, and we ask that you co-operate and even help where possible with our efforts to keep you safe – some social distancing, extra cleaning with antiseptic, library under limited access, etc. Also, we must ask that anyone unfortunate enough to be infected to not attend JAFWA until they are contagion free.
Help would be welcome during set-up and pack-up due to the extra duties imposed by COVID-19. Please arrive early to confirm personal details due to COVID 19 regulations. There will be Contract Tracing, either by the SafeWA app on your keitai (mobile phones), or by signing in at the contact tracing sheet at the front desk. And we need to wipe the chairs down with disinfectant before they are stacked away.

Fruits Basket (2020) season 2

After a family tragedy turns her life upside down, plucky high schooler Tohru Honda takes matters into her own hands and moves out into a tent. Unfortunately for her, she pitches her new home on private land belonging to the mysterious Sohma clan, and it isn’t long before the owners discover her secret. But, as Tohru quickly finds out when the family offers to take her in, the Sohmas have a secret of their own–when stressed or grasped by the opposite sex, they turn into the animals of the Chinese Zodiac.

This evening’s Episode: “It’s Cinderella-ish’!”

The class play “Cinderella” has been adapted and undergone some revisions. To the surprise of the various Sohma Zodiac spirits who come to watch Tohru (and Yuki and Kyo’s performance). But eventually this unique play must end and the usual adolescent drama returns.

16th century Firenze, Italy. The birthplace of the Renaissance Era, where art is thriving. In one small corner of this vast city, one sheltered girl’s journey begins. Arte dreams of becoming an artist, an impossible career for a girl born into a noble family. In those days, art was an exclusively male profession, with women facing strong discrimination. In spite of these challenges, Arte perseveres with hard work and a positive attitude

This evening’s Episode: “Trade Guild”

Arte attends the funeral of a master from Leo’s guild. The other masters are honor bound to hire his now unemployed apprentices, though Leo refuses another apprentice on the grounds his workshop is too small. Meanwhile Arte’s presence causes a fight during a game of Calcio. The masters privately discuss Arte and decide she will join the apprentices painting a fresco in a newly built palace to test if she should remain Leo’s apprentice.

Appare Ranman! (aka “Appare in Full Bloom!”)

After a certain mishap, the brilliant but socially inept engineer Appare Sorano and the shrewd but cowardly samurai Kosame Isshiki find themselves drifting on a boat from Japan to America. Broke, the two decide to compete in the Trans-America Wild Race to win the prize and return to Japan. The two battle crazy rivals, outlaws, and the great outdoors itself as they race through the wild West from the starting line in Los Angeles to the finish line in New York — in the steam-powered car they built.

This evening’s Episode: “I Am Gil!”

The racers head towards the finish line of the first stage in the town of Lancaster, with Appare’s vehicle arriving in the last position even he made up time by driving cross-country. During the rest stop, Hototo sees a snake tattoo on one of Gil’s men and follows them to their camp. He overhears Chase plotting to slow everyone down with a roadblock at the entrance of the Valley of Despair.

Dr Stone season 2 “Stone Wars”

Modern society is lost when a mysterious light leaves everyone petrified in stone. Thousands of years in the future, super genius Senku awakens and begins restoring civilization with his Kingdom of Science. Now as he sets down blueprints for a smartphone in the stone world, Tsukasa and his Empire of Might prepare for the upcoming war.

This evening’s Episode: “Full Assault ”

Senku’s plan to convert Tsukasa’s army one by one has had its first success. However cobvert Nikki points out the flaws in the plan, and the greatest flaw is Tsukasa’s other most competent soldier, Ukyo the Archer. Who captures Chrome easily, for interrogation. Then in order to rescue him, Senku’s entire army of Science will have to mobilise first.

Kyoko Hori is the most popular and gorgeous girl at school, while Izumi Miyamura is an introverted, eyeglasses-wearing boy. However, both find out that their appearances at school are not as they seem, as it turns out that Hori is a laid-back family girl, and Miyamura is a handsome young man covered in piercings and tattoos. The two agree to keep their real personas a secret from their schoolmates.

Tonight’s Episode: “Hori and Miyamura: New Semester ”

Kyoko Hori, the most popular girl in her class, dresses plainly at home and takes care of housework. One day, Izumi Miyamura, the class loner, discovers her secret when he escorts her younger brother, Sota, home from a nosebleed. Hori discovers that Miyamura wears piercings outside of school and has tattoos, but the two decide to keep each others’ secrets and befriend each other as Miyamura continues to visit to play with Sota. Meanwhile, Toru Ishikawa, a classmate, befriends Miyamura in spite of his feelings for Hori and tells him that he plans on confessing to her.

Ascendance of a Bookworm (Honzuki no Gekokuj?: Shisho ni Naru Tame niwa Shudan o Erandeiraremasen)

The story follows Motosu Urano, a book-loving post-secondary student and soon-to-be librarian who ends up crushed to death beneath a pile of books during an earthquake. With her dying breath, she wishes to be reincarnated in a world where she can read books forever. Urano awakens in the body of a weak, five-year-old girl named Myne in a world where books are scarce and only available to elites. Myne, retaining her memories from her previous life, decides to create and print her own books so that she can read again.

Tonight’s Episode: “Meeting ”

Before their meeting with Otto, Myne decides to wash Lutz’s hair with her shampoo so he can look his best. Myne has changed her goal from selling books to selling paper, hinting that she wants Lurz’s help. The meeting day arrives, but Otto shows up with an old partner named Benno, a city merchant and former traveling trader. Let negotiations begin.

retro – Shoujo Kakuemi Utena (Revolutionary Girl Utena)

Utena Tenjou, a teenage girl who expresses her desire to be a prince through her strong-willed personality and tomboyish manner of dress. She finds herself drawn into a series of sword duels at Ohyori Academy, to win the hand of Anthy Himemiya, a mysterious girl known as the “Rose Bride” who possesses the “power to revolutionize the world”.

Tonight’s Episode: “Take Care, Miss Nanami!”

Nanami is sure that someone is trying to kill her. After jumping to the conclusion that it’s her brother Touga, Nanami is saved from a runaway horse by a 10-year-old 4th-grader Mitsuru Tsuwabuki, whom she takes as a servant and bodyguard.

preview item – Kemono Jihen (aka “Monster Incidents”)

In a quiet rural village, many domestic animals die unnatural deaths in a strange incident. To resolve the incident, an odd-looking man from Tokyo who goes by the name “Inugami” comes to the town to investigate. In the town, he meets a young boy who has a mysterious air about him called “Dorotab?”.

Tonight’s Episode: “Kabane ”

Kohachi Inugami, an occult detective from Tokyo, arrives in a rural village to investigate their rotting livestock corpses. While staying at an inn there, he takes an interest in Kabane Kusaka, a young boy nicknamed “Dorotabo” for his perpetually dirty appearance and stench, and scorned by the rest of the inn, including the inn-keeper and her son Yataro. As Kabane works out in the fields, Inugami learns that the animals, mainly chickens, have had their organs chewed out and these incidents have occurred with regularity every time during the full moon.

In/Spectre

When she was still just a girl, Kotoko was kidnapped by yokai. These spirits made her into a powerful intermediary between the spirit and human worlds, but this power came at a price: an eye and a leg. Now, years later, she watches out for dangerous yokai while developing feelings for a young man named Kuro, who is also special: an incident with a yokai has given him healing powers. He’s surprised when Kotoko asks him to team up to handle renegade yokai, preserving the thin line between reality and the supernatural.

Tonight’s Episode: “Logical Fiction ”

Since Nanase was created by people’s imaginations, they must use the website to defeat imagination. Saki suggests shutting down the site, but that would be too legally complicated. Kotoko suggests creating another explanation for Nanase to draw people’s attention onto the new story, causing her to disappear. Saki unwillingly provides more details about Nanase.

Vinland Saga

set in Dane-controlled England at the start of the 11th century, and features the Danish invaders of England commonly known as Vikings. The story combines a dramatisation of King Cnut the Great’s historical rise to power with a revenge plot centered on the historical explorer Thorfinn, the son of a murdered ex-warrior.

Tonight’s Episode: “United Front”

Thorfinn has a broken arm and ribs from Thorkell’s kick, and Thorkell allows him to be treated by Askeladd. Thorkell explains that he and Thors were commanders of the Jomsvikings, and how else they are related. The batlle to the death continues. Will Canute newfound resolution, save the day, before declares that he will march against the king at Gainsborough.
