Below is the extra-long program for December 20^th, 2014. Lots and lots of anime.

This is JAFWA’s End of Year extra long screening, program starts from 1PM!
(assuming we setup quick enough)

Then JAFWA will go into its End of Year break, where people enjoy the various festivities and celebrate their preferred holy days. JAFWA will return on January 10^th, 2015.
Be aware that last week’s Bean Poll to see if we skip ahead in Fairy Tail to where it resumes following the manga storyline was overwhelmingly in favour of doing so – 25 to 4. I leave you to contemplate the mathematical significance of those numbers.

Synopsis

Lucky Star

portrays the lives of four Japanese girls attending a Japanese high school in their second year of high school: Konata Izumi, Kagami Hiiragi, Tsukasa Hiiragi, and Miyuki Takara. The main character is Konata Izumi, a lazy girl who constantly blows off her schoolwork and homework, and instead uses most of her time to watch anime, play video games, and read manga. Although she is lazy, she has also proven to be very intelligent and athletic.

Tonight’s Episode: “Lets go to the Festival“

Konata, Kagami, and Tsukasa go to Comiket 71, at the end of 2006. While Kagami can bear the massive event, Tsukasa can’t take too much, being a first-timer, and is eventually unable to get what Konata asked her to pick up. After the morning trip around Comiket, Konata meets Tsukasa and Kagami at a New Year festival and receives very bad luck in a lottery drawing. At home, Konata goes out of her way to be nice to her dad in order to receive her otoshidama.

Preview – Kamigami no Asobi (Mischief of the Gods)

The heroine, Yui Kusanagi, is the daughter of a Shinto shrine. She discovers a mysterious sword, which transports her to a different world where she meets the Greek god Zeus. He invites her to attend a school in a separate world that he created. Zeus intends to teach the meaning of love to the various young divine beings who also attend the school, in an attempt to reverse the weakening bond between humans and the gods.

Tonight’s Episode: “The Forbidden Academy“

Yui Kusanagi is your typical average High School girl who loves swords and who has parents that own a shrine. Her parents plan to pass the shrine on to one of her brothers thus giving them a plan for life. Not only that, Yui’s friends also have a plan for life, whether it’s love or just based on studying for test exams. One faithful day, as she is at her parents shrine, she enters a storehouse and sees a shining sword. As she touches it, she is transported to very beautiful garden made by Zeus, the Greek god who was god of all gods

Full Metal Panic fumoffu

In the original Full Metal Panic, teen-age former child soldier Sergeant Sousuke Sagara is sent undercover to high school to protect student Kaname Chidori. After the mission was successful his superiors left him at the high school in an attempt to educate the oblivious Sousuke in how civilians act and behave. Thus begins a romantic comedy with often crude humor and high powered weaponry, that focuses on the romantic tension between Sousuke Sagara and Kaname Chidori.

Tonight’s Episode: “Summer Illusion of Steel“

During a day at the beach, Kaname becomes upset at Sousuke’s insensitivity. When she goes off alone, she is asked to have tea with a boy who is enamored with her. Sousuke, however, believes that she was kidnapped and proceeds to rescue her from her apparent kidnappers.

Girls und Panzer OAV

The story takes place in a universe where historical WWII-era tanks are maintained for sports warfare competitions and large carrier ships known as Academy Ships support mobile sea communities. Of the many activities high school girls can participate in, one of the most popular is “sensha-dou” (lit. “the way of the tank”), the art of operating tanks, which is considered a traditional martial art.

Tonight’s Episode: “This is the Real Anzio Battle!“

Set during episode 7 of the TV series, the Italian-themed Anzio High School prepares for their upcoming match against Ouarai, with commander Anchovy procuring a secret weapon for the occasion. Meanwhile, Yukari manages to sneak into Anzio and gather intel for Ouarai, learning that their secret weapon is a heavy Carro Armato P40 tank

Hill Climb Girl

Another of the Young Animator award short films, this one follows the adventures of a high-school girl in her attempts to beat a classmate to school, with inspiration from the Tour de France.

Nasu – Summer in Andalucia

This is the story of a professional Spanish cyclist, Pepe Benengeli, as he competes in the Vuelta a España road bicycle race through his home town in the Iberian region of Andalusia. As the story progresses, Pepe is faced with frustrating consequences, with him facing pressure from his sponsors and the wedding of his former girlfriend, Carmen, to his elder brother, Angel, coinciding on the same day of the penultimate stage of the bicycle race. Then he accidentally overhears a conversation in which he finds out, to his shock, that his sponsor intends to fire him after the race. He has one last chance for glory.

Patlabor live action episode 00

The original Patlabor takes place in what was, at the time of release, the near future of 1998–2002. Robots called “Labors” are employed in heavy construction work. The Tokyo Metropolitan Police has its own fleet of Patrol Labors or Patlabors to combat crimes/terrorism and deal with accidents involving Labors. But those days have passed, and Maintenance boss Shigeo Shiba looks back on the history of SV2

Then we can give you a couple of episodes showing, well not exactly the glory days, but not exactly a total failure, but a typical Christmas Day for SV2.

Mobile Police Patlabor

17-year old Shinichi Izumi is one of the lucky ones, the thing that invaded his body claimed only his hand rather than his head. Now Shinichi must come to terms with the parasitic organism he plays host to, because those who were not so lucky are still out there …

Tonight’s Episodes: “Eve’s Trap” and “Eve’s Terror“

It’s Christmas Eve. Sergeant Kanuka’s grandmother, visiting from America, has gone missing. She leaves a note to Kanuka saying she’s looking for the Christmas of 50 years ago. Fearing the worst, Noa, Asuma and Kanuka search for her, but are called back to duty to the SV2. Detective Matsui has asked the SV2 to help him on a case. An ex-military Labor pilot turned terrorist of the militant anti-Babylon project group “Home of the Sea”, is going to hijack the Soviet Attack Labor L99, code named Doshka when it secretly arrives at Tokyo port. But the military have also secretly been mobilized.

preview – Sanzoku no Musume Ronya (Ronja the Robber’s Daughter)

Studio Ghibli makes their first TV series based on the book “Ronja Rövardotter” by Astrid Lindgren (go find the English translation). Ronia, the only child of a bandit chief, grows up among a clan of robbers living in a castle in the woodlands of early-Medieval Scandinavia. When Ronia grows old enough she ventures into the forest, exploring and discovering its wonders and dangers like the mystical creatures that live there. She learns to live in the forest through her own strength, with the occasional rescue by her parents. Ronia’s life begins to change, however, when she happens upon a boy her own age named Birk.

This series was a last minute find, so JAFWA would appreciate feedback on the day as to whether JAFWA should make this a regular item.

Tonight’s Episodes: “The Child of the Thunder Night” and “Into the Forest of Beginnings“

wo rival forest bandit clans, the Mattis and the Borkas, fight each other for treasure from their victims and divide the forest in two. On a stormy night Ronia is born to Mattis, leader of the bandits of the forest castle and his wife Lovis; on the same day the castle is split in two by a lightning bolt, creating “Hell’s Gap.” Mattis, ecstatic about his daughter, calls Ronia the clan’s greatest treasure. Eventually Ronia is old enough to venture into the forest on her own, being permitted to leave the castle walls for the first time

Memories collection

After the Success of “Short Peace” at the Japanese Film Festival we return to the earlier collection of artist/director Katsuhiro Otomo, produced in 1995, based on three of his manga short stories. The film is composed of three episodes: “Magnetic Rose” (Kanojo no Omoide), “Stink Bomb” (Saishuu-heiki) and “Cannon Fodder” (Taihou no Machi)

Tonight’s Episodes: “Stink Bomb (Saish?-heiki)“

Lab technician Nobuo Tanaka, desperately battling the flu mistakes some experimental pills for cold pills and swallows one. The pills are part of a biological weapon program, reacting to the flu shot and other medications already in his body. Tanaka soon develops a deadly body odour and becomes a walking weapon of mass destruction

Movie – Patema Inverted

Patema is from a civilization that lives in a system of tunnels and caverns deep underground. She likes to go exploring the world outside her village, despite being frequently warned of a mysterious danger that supposedly exists out there. While looking around in the “danger zone”, Patema is confronted by a figure standing on the ceiling, upside-down. She falls into a deep pit, and finds herself on the surface world, above ground, where she meets a boy named Age. They discover that the effect of gravity is reversed for Patema’s people; to Age, Patema is upside-down, while from Patema’s perspective, Age and his entire world are upside-down, which puts her in great danger of falling up into the sky.

Dragon Dentist

Another of the Young Animator award short films, this one is a fantasy where dentist recruits to the military face the final trial of their training – surviving cleaning the teeth of a dragon.

Attack on Titan OAV

The entirety of mankind lives encased within a series of fortified walls which protect them from the Titans, giant humanoid monsters who devour people, that roam the world beyond the outer wall. But now, after nearly a hundred years of relative safety, new Titans have appeared. The security of the walls is a thing of the past, and mankind may be facing extinction.

Tonight’s Episode: “A Choice with No Regrets part 1“

Several years ago, in an Underground District where citizens rarely get to venture into the sunlight, Levi was part of a band of thieves alongside his partner Farlan, who would use maneuver gear to commit various heists to help each other out. One day, they meet a girl named Isabel, who was chased after by guards for trying to get an injured bird back to the surface, and decide to take her in as one of their group. After a while has passed, a mysterious man from the surface uses a hostage to ensure Levi, Farlan, and Isabel take on a job that would be rewarded with citizenship on the surface. When the three take on the job, they outrun the military police but are caught by the Recon Corps, led by Erwin, who offers to clear Levi and the others of their crimes in exchange for joining the Recon Corps.

Kyoukai no Kanata OAV (Beyond the Boundary OAV)

Akihito Kanbara is the half-human son of a dreamshade. Although never completely normal his life becomes a little more exciting when he meets Mirai Kuriyama, the last surviving member of a cursed clan of dreamshade hunters, and Akihito takes it upon himself to help her integrate with the other spirit warriors of their town and boost her confidence.

Tonight’s Episode: “Daybreak“

Takes place two years prior to the TV series when the Nase siblings meet Akihito for the first time in a mission for Hiroomi. Mitsuki follows her brother on this mission and their goal is to subjugate Akihito.

Preview – GARO -Honou no Kokuin- (Fanged Wolf: The Carved Seal of Flames)

In the Valiante Kingdom (which resembles Spain during the Spanish Inquistion) the king, under the influence of his advisor, launches a witch hunt that endangers both Makai Knights and Makai Priests, a Makai Priestess who is condemned to burn at the stake gives birth to a son, León Luis, whose Makai Knight father takes the child away to safety and trains him to become the Golden Knight Garo. Later in his life, when the king of the land grows ill and the throne is usurped by his advisor, the king’s son Prince Alfonso and his mother the queen seek out the assistance of Garo to reclaim the throne

A country is plagued by a witch hunt, and a man in silver wolf-themed armor saves a child from being burned at the stake with his mother.
