Until September JAFWA will be operating on Winter Hours – ie screening starts at ~4:15PM.
This is the third week that JAFWA screens in the merry month of May. Well, “merry” if you enjoy the approaching Winter. Over in Japan it is late Spring with Summer on the horizon.
In this week’s JAFWA program we introduce the final two new regular series that start in May. Now the entire program is different from last month. Both of our new regular items are sequels to series previously screened at JAFWA.
In “Dr Stone” it will be the final installment as our pioneers in the new Stone Age aim for the moon.
And with “Ascendance of a Bookworm”, our isekai reincarnated protagonist enters a new chapter, raised to the rank of a noble and all that entails.
Yet since we know that all anime must eventually come to an end, bar perhaps some perennial favourites such as “One Piece”, we here at JAFWA must lay the groundwork for the future JAFWA program by providing previews of potential candidates to fill the program in the future. This week we investigate the mechanics behind reincarnating into an isekai world, the bureaucracy and how to jump the queue.
As a Public Service Announcement from JAFWA we regretfully inform people with the news that the long-time fixture of Perth fandom – Tokyo Underground is being forced to close for the final time. Though Bronwyn has taken her store through many misfortunes and relocations, she has indicated that she will not be maintaining her stall at the Wanneroo Weekend Markets much longer due to health reasons. Before it is too late visit Tokyo Underground one last time, and help her empty the shop.
Anime is definitely going mainstream. Last year at the cinemas has been the “Demon Slayer” movie, followed by the “Chainsaw Man” movie, and then the “Jujitsu Kaisen” movie. This year there has been the “Zombieland Saga” movie, and a “Gundam” movie, and an unbelievably good “Scarlet”. Life is wonderful for anime fans.
What else will be showing up in cinemas? It sometimes seems that all the popular Japanese anime movies are coming.
Not to mention that Luna Leederville is putting anime films in their Monday Double Feature program and Thursday Tokyo Nights.

This year SwanCon celebrates its 50th anniversary!
JAFWA and SwanCon go back quite far. Many early SwanCon attendees received their first dose of ‘proper’ anime through the late night screening rooms (nothing too dodgy, just pleasantly weird). When JAFWA became an incorporated body in late 1996/early 1997, the governing body of SwanCon (The Western Australian Science Fiction Foundation, or WASFF) allowed us to use their Constitutional Documents as a basis for our own.
In 1999, and again in 2006 JAFWA worked with SwanCon to raise funds and sponsor a Special Guest – Mangaka, Cosplayer, Musician and Toei Animation star Ippongi Bang. Without SwanCon’s support JAFWA would not have achieved something so special.
This year SwanCon is on from 29 May through the long weekend to 1 June, at The Pagoda Resort in Como. For those wanting to visit on the Saturday before the screening, JAFWA is a short distance away in South Perth.

Who Made me a Princess? (In Japanese: Aru Hi, Ohime-sama ni Natteshimatta Ken ni Tsuite, in Korean: Eoneu Nal Gongjuga Doeeobeolyeossda, in Chinese: Mófaa Goungzhuu de Xiao Fánnao)
The story follows Athanasia de Alger Obelia, a young princess executed by her father, Claude de Alger Obelia, the cold-blooded emperor of the Obelian Empire. However, Athanasia is reincarnated as her baby-self and given a second chance at the same life. Athanasia must use all of her wit and cunning to survive in the palace and to prevent her own death.
This evening’s Episode: “Princess of the Obelia Empire“
Emperor Claude decides he will oversee Athanasia’s upbringing as a princess, starting with having tea together once a day. Athanasia slowly relaxes around him, though he remains intimidating. Claude takes her boating on his lake, worrying Lilian and Felix as Claude is unused to looking after children by himself. Hallucination magic may be involved.
Dr Stone season 4 “Science Future” final cour
Modern society is lost when a mysterious light leaves everyone petrified in stone. Thousands of years in the future, super genius Senku awakens and begins restoring civilisation with his Kingdom of Science. After the battle on Treasure Island, Senku and the gang return to the Kingdom of Science. With their sights set on the Moon, they must first voyage to the Americas in hopes of beginning to harvest the required materials. Through teamwork and science, they continue the fight to save humanity once and for all. This will involve creating a space program to go to the Moon.
This Evening’s Episode: “Future Engine”
Using Argon gas, Xeno constructs a Geiger counter to detect radioactive material and rare earth metals for the spacecraft, including chrome and nickel. The team also raises the sunken Perseus to salvage the iron, which Senku alloys with chrome to produce stainless steel. By necessity, the group splits into three teams. Xeno stays in Superalloy City to continue work on the engine. Taiju leads a team back to Corn City to revive their allies, and continue corn production for revival fluid, while Senku and Ryusui lead their team across the Atlantic Ocean.
Ascendance of a Bookworm: Adopted Daughter of an Archduke (Honzuki no Gekokujo: Shisho ni Naru Tame niwa Shudan o Erandeiramasen Dai-San-Bu Ryoushu no Youjo) season 4
The story follows Motosu Urano, a book-loving post-secondary student and soon-to-be librarian who ends up crushed to death beneath a pile of books during an earthquake. With her dying breath, she wishes to be reincarnated in a world where she can read books forever. Urano awakens in the body of a weak, five-year-old girl named Myne in a world where books are scarce and only available to elites. Myne, retaining her memories from her previous life, decides to create and print her own books so that she can read again. Now she has become Rosemyne, the adopted daughter of a Duke.
This evening’s Episode: “I’ve Become a Noble”
Myne the Commoner begins her new life as Rosemyne the Noble. Her first challenge is to complete the baptism and adoption ceremonies. Some nobles have a cruel streak.

After an untimely death, the protagonist finds himself reincarnated in another world. A goddess greets him and tells him he can be reincarnated as anyone he wants. However all the popular ones have ridiculous wait times, so perhaps get creative with his requests might speed things up.

A boy is struck by a meteor and sent to the afrterworld to choose how to reincarnate. His choice is,… odd.
Witch Hat Atelier (Tongari Boushi no Atorie)
In a world where only witches can cast magic, they must avoid being seen by ordinary people while casting. While Coco does her chores, she daydreams of becoming a witch. When a young witch named Qifrey visits her village, Coco uncovers the “absolute secret,” becomes Qifrey’s apprentice, and begins her studies. This is the story of children who encounter despair, yet reach out toward hope.
Tonight’s Episode: “The School of the Grassland“
Qifrey brings Coco to his atelier. While settling into her new home, Coco is welcomed by the outgoing Tetia and aloof Richeh, who are also Qifrey’s apprentices. Qifrey explains to Coco on how magic was regulated and entrusted to a select few after humans abused it to cast dangerous spells, known as forbidden magic, and sow chaos. Coco aspires to start studying as Agott, Qifrey’s remaining apprentice, arrives.
Kusunoki’s Garden of Gods (Kami no Niwatsuki Kusunoki-tei)
Minato Kusunoki ends up becoming the caretaker of a newly constructed house deep in the countryside. A procession of unique and peculiar gods is drawn to the comfort of the purified Kusunoki residence, and Minato spends his days relaxing in the company of his spiritual neighbors. What else lies in store for Minato as he lives peacefully surrounded by gods.
Tonight’s Episode: “Off to the Other World to Exorcise the Evil Spirit“
Minato continues to improve his wind powers. Despite leaving more gifts for him Kirin continues to be nervous around Minato. Harima visits to beg Minato to banish a cursed doll that has become an evil spirit. Due to its sheer malevolence normal exorcists cannot even approach it within its own extra dimensional space.
Champignon Witch (Champignon no Majo)
Luna is a young witch who lives alone in a forest known for its poisonous mushrooms. Feared and shunned by nearby villagers for being a black witch in a kingdom ruled by white witches, Luna is believed to bring illness and death because of the poisonous mushrooms that she leaves everywhere she touches.
Tonight’s Episode: “The Destined One“
On Luna’s next trip to the village, the boy from her drawings, Henri, tries to talk with her. She is surprised and uses her mushrooms to hide, but eventually she relaxes. Henri reveals that he comes from a family of white witches, but his powers are not strong compared to the rest of his family. Yet the city guard is called and chases after Luna.
Re: Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu (“Re: Life in a Different World from Zero”) season 4
Subaru Natsuki is an ordinary high school student who is lost in an alternate world, where he is rescued by a beautiful, silver-haired girl. He stays near her to return the favour, but the destiny she is burdened with is more than Subaru can imagine. Enemies attack one by one, and both of them are killed. He then finds out he has the power to rewind death, back to the time he first came to this world. But only he remembers what has happened since.
Tonight’s Episode: “The Keeper of the Watchtower“
Separated from the others and finding himself in an underground passage with Ram, Foxidna, and his land dragon, Patrasche, Subaru and his companions search for an exit. But the choice is madness and death.
Roll Over and Die: I Will Fight for an Ordinary Life with My Love and Cursed Sword! (Omae Gotoki ga Maou ni Kateru to Omou na to Yuusha Paati o Tsuihou Sareta no de, Outo de Kimama ni Kurashitai which literally translates as ‘Banished from the Hero’s Party Because They Said ‘Don’t Think Somebody Like You Can Defeat the Demon Lord’, I Want to Live Freely in the Capital‘)
Flum Apricot is born with a unique Affinity known as “Reversal” that leaves her with zero stats across the board. However, after being prophesied by the God Origin to join the Hero’s party and defeat the Demon Lord, Flum finds herself with what seems like an impossible task. Things only get harder when the party’s renowned sage, Jean Inteige, decides to sell her into slavery instead. Flum finally learns the true meaning of her unique “Reversal” Affinity.
Tonight’s Episode: “Purity and Corruption“
While shopping with Milkit, Flum stops a theft committed by some of Dein’s goons, during which she receives help from Origin Church nun Sara. Returning the stolen items to their owner, Leitch, the merchant begs them to accept an illicit quest: retrieve herbs to cure his ailing wife, which the church outlawed to enforce the use of healing magic. Dein sends his revenge, as does the werewolf.
Clevatess (Clevatess -Majuu no Ou to Akago to Shikabane no Yuusha-)
After killing a group of heroes and destroying an entire kingdom as revenge for attacking his lands, one of the Four Beast Kings, Clevatess, takes in a baby belonging to the kingdom’s royal family. He then resurrects one of the heroes, Alicia Glenfall, whom he enslaves so she can help him take care of the baby while hoping to examine humanity more closely.
Tonight’s Episode: “Magical Talent“
Despite her immortality, Alicia suffocates as she reaches the bottom. While she finds the Regalia, she is attacked by another monster called the Ancient One. Meanwhile, Klen manages to defeat Betty, but is unhappy that Alicia did not tell him about the mind-controlling magic, while Vroko has baby Luna hostage.
