Screening on the evening of Saturday, April 25^th 2026.

Many people are rather interested to know that this is the end of the month of April, and there are two special occurrences that will be happening:

• Firstly, our monthly Survey to help the JAFWA committee determine the popularity of both the regular program and the preview episodes we show. This survey is particularly important as the results will help us decide what new regular shows start in May.
• Secondly, there shall be the Monthly Member’s Prize Draw. Is there anything in particular our dear JAFWAites would like to see in the prize pool, that is within our budget? We have a Suggestion box.

This week will be the last week we will be operating on Summer Hours, for starting next month JAFWA switches to Winter Hours – ie screening starts at ~4:15PM.

As a Public Service Announcement from JAFWA we regretfully inform people with the news that the long-time fixture of Perth fandom – Tokyo Underground is being forced to close for the final time. Though Bronwyn has taken her store through many misfortunes and relocations, she has indicated that she will not be maintaining her stall at the Wanneroo Weekend Markets much longer due to health reasons. Before it is too late visit Tokyo Underground one last time, and help her empty the shop.

This week in the JAFWA program we find that three more of our regular titles have come to an end, though two of them have the next series/cour planned/in production.
And our preview item, ready for the survey, demonstrates how powerful spiritual power makes for a divine home life.

Anime is definitely going mainstream. Last year at the cinemas has been the “Demon Slayer” movie, followed by the “Chainsaw Man” movie, and then the “Jujutsu Kaisen” movie. This year there has been the “Zombieland Saga” movie, and a “Gundam” movie, and an unbelievably good “Scarlet”. The return of “Demon Slayer”! And many other less familiar titles, with more to come. Life is wonderful for anime fans.
What else will be showing up in cinemas? It sometimes seems that all the popular Japanese anime movies are coming.
Not to mention that Luna Leederville is putting anime films in their Monday Double Feature program and Thursday Tokyo Nights.

If you don’t want to sponsor an entire night like Lindsay, Elliot and Dale did previously, there is the other scheme for our signed up members. On the night nearest your birthday, as Greg and Sally have done, you can nominate something to play during the Dinner Break (limited to 30 minutes max). You may have to help us source this material, so plan and inform us in advance please.

Tokyo Alley’s 10^th anniversary!

On the weekend of 9-10 May 2026 Tokyo Alley will be having their 10^th Convention at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Center. Head on down before coming to JAFWA to see the stallholders and artists.

This year SwanCon celebrates its 50^th anniversary!

JAFWA and SwanCon go back quite far. Many early SwanCon attendees received their first dose of ‘proper’ anime through the late night screening rooms (nothing too dodgy, just pleasantly weird). When JAFWA became an incorporated body in late 1996/early 1997, the governing body of SwanCon (The Western Australian Science Fiction Foundation, or WASFF) allowed us to use their Constitutional Documents as a basis for our own.

In 1999, and again in 2006 JAFWA worked with SwanCon to raise funds and sponsor a Special Guest – Mangaka, Cosplayer, Musician and Toei Animation star Ippongi Bang. Without SwanCon’s support JAFWA would not have achieved something so special.

This year Swancon 50 // Natcon 2026 is on from 29 May through the long weekend to 1 June, at The Pagoda Resort in Como. For those wanting to visit on the Saturday before the screening, JAFWA is a short distance away in South Perth.

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End (Sousou no Furiiren) season 2

For ten years, elf mage Frieren traveled with Himmel the hero, Heiter the priest, and Eisen the dwarf warrior as they quested to destroy the demon king. At the end of their journey, Frieren set out on her own, not quite understanding how differently time flows for her versus her human companions. Reunited after fifty years only to see them wither and die, Frieren begins to ponder the nature of connections at a time when it’s already too late to say goodbye. On the road to Ende, Frieren confronts past bonds and rising threats with her newfound party.

This Evening’s Episode: “A Magnificent End“

Genau and Stark continue their onslaught against Revolte, but he handles their attacks easily. Realizing they cannot beat Revolte through skill alone, Stark intentionally lets himself be hit to distract him. But an illusory child on the battlefield confirms Revolte’s theory that humans care for their young. Meanwhile Fern and Methode try to survive the fog of war.

Spy x Family season 3

In order to ensure World Peace, a master spy who has to “build a family” to execute a mission, not realising that the girl he adopts as his daughter is a telepath, and the woman he agrees to be in a marriage with is a skilled assassin.

This evening’s Episode: “Extreme Level 3 Situation“

A mostly-sober Yor feels embarrassed over what happened last night with Loid and talks with him. However, Loid and Yuri are secretly called by their respective organizations for an important mission. Winston Wheeler, an undercover SSS agent who has been working as a mole at WISE HQ in Westalis, is forced to escape back to Ostania after his identity is exposed. In doing so, however, Wheeler managed to steal several encrypted files, including the locations of WISE’s Ostania-based agents and information on Operation Strix.

preview item – Kusunoki’s Garden of Gods (Kami no Niwatsuki Kusunoki-tei)

Minato Kusunoki ends up becoming the caretaker of a newly constructed house deep in the countryside. A procession of unique and peculiar gods is drawn to the comfort of the purified Kusunoki residence, and Minato spends his days relaxing in the company of his spiritual neighbors. What else lies in store for Minato as he lives peacefully surrounded by gods.

Tonight’s Episode: “A Mountain God Visits the Garden of Gods“

Young Minato sees a Zashiki-warashi, confirming he has the family ability to see benevolent spirits. As a teenager Minato is made caretaker for the home of a deceased relative. Unknown to him the house is infested with wicked spirits that he cannot see, but his spirit powers are so strong they are exorcised when he enters the house. Soon he is visited by a wolf Yamagami; the Mountain God.

May I Ask for One Final Thing? (Saigo ni Hitotsu dake Onegai Shitemo Yoroshii Deshou ka)

In the middle of a ball, Scarlet’s fiancé, Prince Kyle, suddenly calls off their engagement. She’s falsely accused of being a bully, and people unfairly call her a “Villainess.” At her wit’s end, she asks for one last favor: to give him a good fist in the face. So begins Scarlet’s story of revenge against Kyle and his corrupt cronies.

Tonight’s Episodes: “May I Pay Off the Massive Debt My Fists Have Accrued?” and “May I Ask for One Final Thing?” finale

Scarlet’s group travel to Sahasgila. They enter the dungeon where the Holy Gem is located in search for Terenezza, with Scarlet destroying every booby trap that they encounter and confronting the Palmian soldiers who set the traps. Eventually Scarlet confronts Terenezza, who both fight using powerful magic. Scarlet eventually defeats Terenezza and reclaims Diana’s powers from her. However Julius is brainwashed and comes to Terenezza’s aid. Terenezza continues her plan and has Julius hold back Scarlet, confident that she won’t attack her lover. This is a mistake.

Mashle: Magic and Muscles (“Masshuru”) season 2

This is a world of magic where magic is used for everything. But deep in the forest exists a young man who spends his time training and bulking up. He can’t use magic, but he enjoys a peaceful life with his father. His muscular body will have to protect him from the magic users who are out to get him, now that his magic-lack is revealed.

Tonight’s Episode: “Mash Burnedead and His Good Friends” finale

To hide Mash’s involvement, the Bureau tells the world the Divine Visionaries drove Innocent away. Wahlberg worries now Innocent can control both Time and Space he might be the most powerful magician alive, and hopes Mash can somehow stop him. Lance reminds Mash they still have exams and if Mash fails even one he will be expelled then executed. Unfortunately, Mash’s brain overheats when studying.

Oshi no Ko (“My Favorite Idol” or “Their Idol’s Children”) season 3

Goro Amemiya works as an OB-GYN in a small rural town and is a huge fan of upcoming idol Ai Hoshino. After an unexpected meeting, Goro ends up dying suddenly only to be reborn as one of Ai’s children; a boy named Aquamarine Hoshino (or Aqua for short). He and his twin sister Ruby then grows up as one of show-biz’s biggest secrets.
As Aqua continues his quest to find his father—the puppet master behind his mother’s murder—within the Japanese entertainment industry. But to also track down the truth behind Ai and Goro’s deaths, Ruby keeps rising in the entertainment world.

Tonight’s Episode: “Private Audition“

After being asked, Ruby wonders if acting makes her a liar, seeing as she has been playing a role her entire life since being reincarnated. Akane deduces the intention behind the audition and suspects Aqua is involved, noting that he has nothing to lose and is willing to use others to achieve his goal.

Jujutsu Kaisen: The Culling Game (Jujutsu Kaisen Shimetsu Kaiyuu Zenpen)

Negative human emotions – regret, bitterness, shame – are the source of all curses that infest the world and hide in everyday life, leading to death in the worst cases. Yuji Itadori, a particularly strong young man, attempts to save a friend from a curse, only to wind up consuming the special grade curse of Ryoumen Sukuna’s finger. Only a curse can eliminate another curse, and Yuji’s career as a cursed person who must exorcise curses has now begin. Now that curses are mainstream, the Culling Game begins, pushing Yuji and his allies to their limits.

Tonight’s Episode: “Sendai Colony“

Yuta uses Rika to protect a group of civilians caught in the colony, while he engages the cockroach cursed spirit Kurourushi. After he exorcises the cursed spirit with his Reverse Cursed Technique, Uro suddenly attacks, her technique allowing her to physically manipulate the fabric of space around her. Ishigori fends off Uro with his Discharge technique, firing powerful blasts of cursed energy. Hoping Yuta will satisfy his hunger for battle, they engage in a fierce fight.

Golden Kamuy final season(Goruden Kamui) Part A

Saichi Sugimoto, a survivor of the battle of 203 Hill in the Russo-Japanese War has become a miner in Hokkaido in order to provide for the widow of his dead comrade, Toraji. He hears a dubious story of hidden Ainu gold stashed by a criminal group, and accidentally finds clues to its location. He decides to search for the gold along with an Ainu girl, Asirpa, who rescues him from Hokkaido’s harsh northern wilderness. Though other parties are also hunting for the gold.

Tonight’s Episodes: “Bushido” and “Daughter of Wilk” finale

Lt. Tsurumi’s forces make their way inside Goryoukaku, and Asirpa must decide to stay or flee. Where does the true spirit of Duty that is Bushido lead to? So many personal battles. If Sugimoto and Asirpa flee Goryoukaku, difficult as that will be, their only chance is to board a nearby train. It is the wrong train.
