As a Public Service Announcement from JAFWA we regretfully inform people with the news that the long-time fixture of Perth fandom – Tokyo Underground is being forced to close for the final time. Though Bronwyn has taken her store through many misfortunes and relocations, she has indicated that she will not be maintaining her stall at the Wanneroo Weekend Markets much longer due to health reasons. Before it is too late visit Tokyo Underground one last time, and help her empty the shop.

But dream on of Summer for a little while longer, as it is not until next month before JAFWA switches to Winter Hours.

This week in the JAFWA program we find that a couple of our regular items have come to an end, though one of them has a second series.
And our preview item will be a double-length episode this week. In a world of weak humans and mighty monsters, is there anything that can convince the Monster King that humans are worthy?

Anime is definitely going mainstream. Last year at the cinemas has been the “Demon Slayer” movie, followed by the “Chainsaw Man” movie, and then the “Jujutsu Kaisen” movie. This year there has been the “Zombieland Saga” movie, and a “Gundam” movie, and an unbelievably good “Scarlet”. The return of “Demon Slayer”! And many other less familiar titles, with more to come. Life is wonderful for anime fans.
What else will be showing up in cinemas? It sometimes seems that all the popular Japanese anime movies are coming.
Not to mention that Luna Leederville is putting anime films in their Monday Double Feature program and Thursday Tokyo Nights.

If you don’t want to sponsor an entire night like Lindsay, Elliot and Dale did previously, there is the other scheme for our signed up members. On the night nearest your birthday, as Greg and Sally have done, you can nominate something to play during the Dinner Break (limited to 30 minutes max). You may have to help us source this material, so plan and inform us in advance please.

Tokyo Alley’s 10^th anniversary!

On the weekend of 9-10 May 2026 Tokyo Alley will be having their 10^th Convention at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Center. Head on down before coming to JAFWA to see the stallholders and artists.

This year SwanCon celebrates its 50^th anniversary!

JAFWA and SwanCon go back quite far. Many early SwanCon attendees received their first dose of ‘proper’ anime through the late night screening rooms (nothing too dodgy, just pleasantly weird). When JAFWA became an incorporated body in late 1996/early 1997, the governing body of SwanCon (The Western Australian Science Fiction Foundation, or WASFF) allowed us to use their Constitutional Documents as a basis for our own.

In 1999, and again in 2006 JAFWA worked with SwanCon to raise funds and sponsor a Special Guest – Mangaka, Cosplayer, Musician and Toei Animation star Ippongi Bang. Without SwanCon’s support JAFWA would not have achieved something so special.

This year Swancon 50 // Natcon 2026 is on from 29 May through the long weekend to 1 June, at The Pagoda Resort in Como. For those wanting to visit on the Saturday before the screening, JAFWA is a short distance away in South Perth.

Alma-chan Wants to Have a Family (Alma-chan wa Kazoku ni Naritai)

Alma is a super high-performance girl-type robot weapon created by two genius scientists, Enji Kamisato and Suzume Yobane. However, because the pair created her, Alma thinks that the two are actually her parents, and uses all in her considerable power to make them the perfect family.

This evening’s Episode: “I Want To Be A Family” finale

Scientists from The Institute decide to invite Enji and Suzume to work in America. Enji and Suzume plan to refuse, but Alma insists a better revenge is getting their former critics to admit their work is genius. The Americans offer them huge salaries, a lab and a mansion. Enji and Suzume are soon so busy they spend almost no time with Alma.

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End (Sousou no Furiiren) season 2

For ten years, elf mage Frieren traveled with Himmel the hero, Heiter the priest, and Eisen the dwarf warrior as they quested to destroy the demon king. At the end of their journey, Frieren set out on her own, not quite understanding how differently time flows for her versus her human companions. Reunited after fifty years only to see them wither and die, Frieren begins to ponder the nature of connections at a time when it’s already too late to say goodbye. On the road to Ende, Frieren confronts past bonds and rising threats with her newfound party.

This Evening’s Episode: “The Divine Revolte“

In a flashback, Serie tells Methode that Genau’s partner died in battle, and so Methode will have to accompany him to the Northern Plateau. Later on, Genau reminisces over his partner, who died fighting to save a child instead of focusing on killing the demon, which he thought was ridiculous. In the present, the team of five work together to plan their approach to take out the exceptional demon they identified as having led the attack on the village. The demon is revealed to be a four-armed giant with a half-snake body named The Divine Revolte. But the demon will take the initiative.

Spy x Family season 3

In order to ensure World Peace, a master spy who has to “build a family” to execute a mission, not realising that the girl he adopts as his daughter is a telepath, and the woman he agrees to be in a marriage with is a skilled assassin.

This evening’s Episode: “Austin’s Trouble / A Normal Mixer / Moon Landing“

Thomas Austin, the teacher who was injured during the bus jacking incident, seeks psychological help from Loid after waking up having nightmares since the incident. After helping her coworkers finish office work early, Yor is invited by Camilla, Millie, and Sharon to a mixer for dinner. Yor gets drunk and misunderstands her coworkers’ comments about life partners. While watching the news about the space race between Westalis and Ostania, Damian and Emile find it boring, while Ewen finds it exciting to go to space.

May I Ask for One Final Thing? (Saigo ni Hitotsu dake Onegai Shitemo Yoroshii Deshou ka)

In the middle of a ball, Scarlet’s fiancé, Prince Kyle, suddenly calls off their engagement. She’s falsely accused of being a bully, and people unfairly call her a “Villainess.” At her wit’s end, she asks for one last favor: to give him a good fist in the face. So begins Scarlet’s story of revenge against Kyle and his corrupt cronies.

Tonight’s Episode: “As These Appear Undercooked, May I Turn Them Into Minced Meat?“

Dios and Nanaka are trying to get past a horde of monsters to reach Falconia with the help of the Vankish army. Scarlet arrives to help Alflame as he manages to swiftly defeat most of the monsters, allowing Dios and Nanaka to get through. Since Dios is part elf, he should be able to negotiate with Falconia, but Nanaka is still wary of him. After Dios explains his intentions, they find that the Falconia forces are under Terenezza’s control.

Oshi no Ko (“My Favorite Idol” or “Their Idol’s Children”) season 3

Goro Amemiya works as an OB-GYN in a small rural town and is a huge fan of upcoming idol Ai Hoshino. After an unexpected meeting, Goro ends up dying suddenly only to be reborn as one of Ai’s children; a boy named Aquamarine Hoshino (or Aqua for short). He and his twin sister Ruby then grows up as one of show-biz’s biggest secrets.
As Aqua continues his quest to find his father—the puppet master behind his mother’s murder—within the Japanese entertainment industry. But to also track down the truth behind Ai and Goro’s deaths, Ruby keeps rising in the entertainment world.

Tonight’s Episode: “Greed and Passion“

Despite some setbacks, Gotanda and Kaburagi secure funding for the production of The 15-Year Lie, during which Kaburagi shares Yura’s sudden unavailability to star in the film. Elsewhere, Aqua opens up to Kana and MEM-cho about his breakup with Akane, remarking that he can focus his mind on getting revenge on Hikaru as he is visited by the white-haired girl at Ai’s grave. Who will play the starring role of Ai?

After killing a group of heroes and destroying an entire kingdom as revenge for attacking his lands, one of the Four Beast Kings, Clevatess, takes in a baby belonging to the kingdom’s royal family. He then resurrects one of the heroes, Alicia Glenfall, whom he enslaves so she can help him take care of the baby while hoping to examine humanity more closely.

Tonight’s Episode: “The Lord of Dark Beasts“

Alicia has aspired to be a brave hero since she was little — after the king chose her to be one of 13 heroes for a quest. Wielding legendary swords, the heroes set out to subjugate the lord of magical beasts, Clevatess. However, these very heroes might bring about the realm’s deadliest catastrophe that would wipe out all humanity. The world’s last remaining hope lies in a baby entrusted to the lord of magical beasts.

Jujutsu Kaisen: The Culling Game (Jujutsu Kaisen Shimetsu Kaiyuu Zenpen)

Negative human emotions – regret, bitterness, shame – are the source of all curses that infest the world and hide in everyday life, leading to death in the worst cases. Yuji Itadori, a particularly strong young man, attempts to save a friend from a curse, only to wind up consuming the special grade curse of Ryoumen Sukuna’s finger. Only a curse can eliminate another curse, and Yuji’s career as a cursed person who must exorcise curses has now begin. Now that curses are mainstream, the Culling Game begins, pushing Yuji and his allies to their limits.

Tonight’s Episode: “Tokyo Colony No. 1 – Part 5“

Cornered inside Megumi’s incomplete Domain, Reggie retaliates by summoning cars and a house in an attempt to crush him. However, Megumi undoes the Domain, and the weight of Reggie’s summoned objects destroys the gym’s floor, causing both to fall into the pool below, leaving Reggie’s receipts unusable. Meanwhile, Hazenoki continually fails to harm Takaba, whose Comedian Cursed Technique allows whatever he thinks to be funny to manifest into reality, nullifying any damage he receives.

The Beginning After The End (Saikyou no Ousama, Futatabime no Jinsei wa Nani o Suru? lit. ‘What Will the Mighty King Do in His Second Life?’)

King Grey is a once-powerful ruler reborn as Arthur Leywin, a boy with untapped potential. He discovers that his new life is filled with danger and adventure at every turn. From mastering powerful spells to facing fierce enemies, Arthur must use his skills and wits to protect those he cares about and uncover the secrets of his mysterious reincarnation.

Tonight’s Episode: “The King’s Departure.” Finale

Jasmine takes Arthur to the adventurer’s guild to obtain a license from Guildmaster Kaspian Bladeheart, who informs Jasmine her father has been looking for her. Arthur chooses to register under the alias Note. There is a lot of high ranking starters.

Golden Kamuy final season(Goruden Kamui)

Saichi Sugimoto, a survivor of the battle of 203 Hill in the Russo-Japanese War has become a miner in Hokkaido in order to provide for the widow of his dead comrade, Toraji. He hears a dubious story of hidden Ainu gold stashed by a criminal group, and accidentally finds clues to its location. He decides to search for the gold along with an Ainu girl, Asirpa, who rescues him from Hokkaido’s harsh northern wilderness. Though other parties are also hunting for the gold.

Tonight’s Episode: “The Battle of Goryoukaku“

Lt. Tsurumi’s assault on Goryoukaku begins in full force.
