Screening of Saturday 21st February 2026

Valentine’s Day has come and gone and all who attended JAFWA seemed to enjoy the sponsored night, some having been introduced to anime they had been previously unaware of. There has also been calls to bring back a retro anime slot into the programs, specifically “Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann“. Would the rest of our dear JAFWA attendees want this?

Meanwhile your beloved MC has to deal with the consequences of the night. After receiving traditional Valentine’s Day chocolate from various people, I am by Japanese Tradition obligated to reciprocate the gift. Fortunately there is a bit of a guide for the Japanese. Be it giri-choko, from giri (‘obligation’) and choko, (‘chocolate’), or honmei-choko (lit. “true feeling chocolate”), I have a month to find an equitable value return Gift for March 14^th, otherwise known as “White Day” (because the return gift should be white) (and probably chocolate). How to determine an appropriate amount though…?

Now that the special one-off event has passed, it it time to return the the typical specialness of the regular anime program. This week at JAFWA We start the long-awaited second season of “sousou no Frieren, as it started a bit later in the Japanese calendar than several other shows and we definitely wanted to guarantee having it on hand.
Also, we intend to screen a preview episode, a domestic slice of life with a poor orphan taken in by a witch of an aunt, her only refuge from the overwhelming mess is to confide in her journal.

Anime is going mainstream. Last year at the cinemas has been the “Demon Slayer” movie, followed by the “Chainsaw Man” movie, and then the “Jujitsu Kaisen” movie. Recently the “Zombieland Saga” movie is appearing in cinemas, and a “Gundam” movie. Life is wonderful for anime fans.
Come February is the long awaited Scarlet, with more to come.
Not to mention that Luna Leederville is putting anime films in their Monday Double Feature program.

Alma-chan Wants to Have a Family (Alma-chan wa Kazoku ni Naritai)

Alma is a super high-performance girl-type robot weapon created by two genius scientists, Enji Kamisato and Suzume Yobane. However, because the pair created her, Alma thinks that the two are actually her parents, and uses all in her considerable power to make them the perfect family.

This evening’s Episode: “The Moon“

Enji is revealed to be scared of a ghost haunting the apartment. Lightning causes a power failure so Enji trips into Suzume’s breasts and concludes it is a squishy ghost. Alma meets manga artist Takarada, and draws some high quality art for her. Tokoyo reappears with a rebuilt Machina who challenges Alma to a bike race but they go too, too fast.

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End (Sousou no Furiiren) season 2

For ten years, elf mage Frieren traveled with Himmel the hero, Heiter the priest, and Eisen the dwarf warrior as they quested to destroy the demon king. At the end of their journey, Frieren set out on her own, not quite understanding how differently time flows for her versus her human companions. Reunited after fifty years only to see them wither and die, Frieren begins to ponder the nature of connections at a time when it’s already too late to say goodbye. On the road to Ende, Frieren confronts past bonds and rising threats with her newfound party.

This Evening’s Episode: “Shall We Go, Then?“

Continuing their journey to Ende, Frieren’s party runs low on funds, and Fern determines that they need to head to the nearest town and find work. On their way to the town, the party falls through hollow ground and into a cave full of magic-nullifying crystals. Frieren and Fern are left powerless without the use of magic and as such Stark is relied on for protection. Surviving the cave, they come to an Inn and run into Wirbel who insists on trying to recruit Stark for defending the Northern Plateau from the encroaching demon threat.

Spy x Family season 3

In order to ensure World Peace, a master spy who has to “build a family” to execute a mission, not realising that the girl he adopts as his daughter is a telepath, and the woman he agrees to be in a marriage with is a skilled assassin.

This Evening’s Episode: “Behind the Scandal / The Path to an Imperial Scholar“

Jonas Wellman, a famed Ostanian Opera singer who is popular in Westalis, will be joining a musical tour to Westalis to improve relations between the two nations. However, Wellman is slandered by Ostania’s far-right publications, which spread scandals from questionable sources. WISE takes a death threat against Wellman seriously, and Sylvia and her team stop a disgruntled ex-Ostanian soldier from killing Wellman.
While Anya is waiting for the late school bus to take her home, Henderson asks her to help him carry some books to his office in exchange for some snacks. During their walk, they discuss her time at school and her second Tonitrus Bolt. Henderson tells Anya not to be discouraged.

35-year-old novelist Makio Koudai and her 15-year-old niece Asa live together under one roof. Makio took Asa in on an impulse after Asa’s parents, which included Makio’s older sister, passed away. The next day, Makio returns to her senses and remembers that she does not do well in the company of other people. So begins their daily life, as Makio attempts to acclimate to a roommate, while Asa attempts to get used to an adult who never acts like one.

Tonight’s Episode: “Overflow“

Makio K?dai hears the news that her older sister and brother-in-law died in a car accident. While waiting for the autopsy, Makio is asked to take in her orphaned niece, Asa Takumi. After an awkward conversation, Makio suggests for Asa to keep her own journal. But Makio still hates her late sister.

May I Ask for One Final Thing? (Saigo ni Hitotsu dake Onegai Shitemo Yoroshii Deshou ka)

In the middle of a ball, Scarlet’s fiancé, Prince Kyle, suddenly calls off their engagement. She’s falsely accused of being a bully, and people unfairly call her a “Villainess.” At her wit’s end, she asks for one last favor: to give him a good fist in the face. So begins Scarlet’s story of revenge against Kyle and his corrupt cronies.

Tonight’s Episode: “May I Clobber this Asshole Prince?“

As the slaves are rescued, Scarlet decides that Godwin is talking isekai nonsense and beats him mercilessly for his crimes. Having abused her Overclock ability, half of her silver hair turns black while also weakening her. Godwin seizes this opportunity to draw Terenezza’s pistol and try to shoot her, but Julius jumps in the way. Scarlet adopts Alflame’s dragon Rex as a pet. Terenezza, believing herself the heroine, infiltrates the prison and thanks Godwin for suppressing worship of Saint Diana in favor of Palmia, the Goddess of Love.

Mashle: Magic and Muscles (“Masshuru”) season 2

This is a world of magic where magic is used for everything. But deep in the forest exists a young man who spends his time training and bulking up. He can’t use magic, but he enjoys a peaceful life with his father. His muscular body will have to protect him from the magic users who are out to get him, now that his magic-lack is revealed.

Tonight’s Episode: “Mash Burnedead and You Look, You Lose Your Life“

Margarette defeats both Carpaccio’s teammates so stage 2 ends with Mash, Finn, Dot, Lance, Margarette and another student named Leblanc Russel having passed. Margarette receives implied permission from Divine Visionary Orter Madl to destroy Mash in stage 3. Mash meets Divine Visionary Kaldo Gehenna, who offers to grant Mash an immediate pass on the exam if he beats him in 3 games of “You Look, You Lose”.

Oshi no Ko (“My Favorite Idol” or “Their Idol’s Children”) season 3

Goro Amemiya works as an OB-GYN in a small rural town and is a huge fan of upcoming idol Ai Hoshino. After an unexpected meeting, Goro ends up dying suddenly only to be reborn as one of Ai’s children; a boy named Aquamarine Hoshino (or Aqua for short). He and his twin sister Ruby then grows up as one of show-biz’s biggest secrets.
As Aqua continues his quest to find his father—the puppet master behind his mother’s murder—within the Japanese entertainment industry. But to also track down the truth behind Ai and Goro’s deaths, Ruby keeps rising in the entertainment world.

Tonight’s Episode: “Correctness“

Ruby and the interviewees meet each other, during which Ruby introduces racy cosplayer Meiya as another interviewee. The group heads to the interview, but Meiya becomes offended by Dig Deep! and by Urushibara’s disrespectful, objectifying attitude towards cosplayers. Meiya publishes her complaints online and stirs controversy, forcing Dig Deep! to issue a public apology.

Jujutsu Kaisen: The Culling Game (Jujutsu Kaisen Shimetsu Kaiyuu Zenpen)

Negative human emotions – regret, bitterness, shame – are the source of all curses that infest the world and hide in everyday life, leading to death in the worst cases. Yuji Itadori, a particularly strong young man, attempts to save a friend from a curse, only to wind up consuming the special grade curse of Ryoumen Sukuna’s finger. Only a curse can eliminate another curse, and Yuji’s career as a cursed person who must exorcise curses has now begin. Now that curses are mainstream, the Culling Game begins, pushing Yuji and his allies to their limits.

Tonight’s Episode: “Passion“

Principal Yaga is revealed to secretly hold power considerable for Special Grade, as he can create an army of autonomous cursed corpses like Panda, or Takeru, Kusakabe’s nephew, whose soul he resurrected in a cursed corpse. Following the Shibuya Incident, his execution is carried out by Gakuganji, despairing Panda, who escaped custody with Kusakabe’s help. Yuji and Megumi sign up for an illegal fight club for sorcerers, hosted by Hakari and fellow expelled third-year student from Jujutsu High, Kirara Hoshi.

The Beginning After The End (Saikyou no Ousama, Futatabime no Jinsei wa Nani o Suru? lit. ‘What Will the Mighty King Do in His Second Life?’)

King Grey is a once-powerful ruler reborn as Arthur Leywin, a boy with untapped potential. He discovers that his new life is filled with danger and adventure at every turn. From mastering powerful spells to facing fierce enemies, Arthur must use his skills and wits to protect those he cares about and uncover the secrets of his mysterious reincarnation.

Tonight’s Episode: “The King’s Training“

In his dreams, Arthur experiences the pain from his core as a shadowy monster. Virion decides to take Arthur to visit his old friend. He also warns Arthur that as heir to the throne, Tessia has often been manipulated by people pretending to be her friend, so Arthur must be very special to her if she trusts him. Arthur is able to send a psychic message to his thrilled parents telling them he is alright, but to cure his illness he becomes Virion’s apprentice.

Golden Kamuy final season(Goruden Kamui)

Saichi Sugimoto, a survivor of the battle of 203 Hill in the Russo-Japanese War has become a miner in Hokkaido in order to provide for the widow of his dead comrade, Toraji. He hears a dubious story of hidden Ainu gold stashed by a criminal group, and accidentally finds clues to its location. He decides to search for the gold along with an Ainu girl, Asirpa, who rescues him from Hokkaido’s harsh northern wilderness. Though other parties are also hunting for the gold.

Tonight’s Episode: “Pinky Bone“

Sofia and the Russian revolutionaries make a play for Asirpa and the gold but are they strong enough? The 7th Divisions is scattered and hiding, Sugimoto is exhausted and Shiraishi does not know how to drive, and the others hunt. Has Lt Koito lost faith? And what is Lt Tsurumi’s secret history in Vladivostok?
