Screening of Saturday 24th January 2026

Three weeks into the new year and JAFWA is getting more popular, based on the new faces from last week. Things are getting hot!

This week’s JAFWA screening will start the last new regular items for this month, now that it has screened in Japan. This is not the only title that is almost too fresh for JAFWA, as we are still on tenterhooks hoping “Golden Kamuy” will be available in time for this week.

This week we say farewell to “Zatsu Tabi” – may all your journeys be enlightening.
And we will have a preview episode featuring magic, mushrooms and jealously guarded status.
Just to repeat we are starting the third season of a reincarnated doctor seeking his mother’s murderer in the seedy underside of show business.

Anime is going mainstream. Last year at the cinemas has been the “Demon Slayer” movie, followed by the “Chainsaw Man” movie, and then the “Jujitsu Kaisen” movie. This week is the “Zombieland Saga” movies appearing in cinemas, and next week there will be a “Gundam” movie. Life is wonderful for anime fans. And a week after that, when JAFWA has its monthly break, is the long awaited Scarlet.

Alma-chan Wants to Have a Family (Alma-chan wa Kazoku ni Naritai)

Alma is a super high-performance girl-type robot weapon created by two genius scientists, Enji Kamisato and Suzume Yobane. However, because the pair created her, Alma thinks that the two are actually her parents, and uses all in her considerable power to make them the perfect family.

This evening’s Episode: “See You Later”

Alma encounters a girl named Hana and uses her abilities to help search for her missing puppies. Hana is surprised she is a robot and that she wanted to help since her classmates all think she is scary. Alma decides she wants to be Hana’s friend, so she arranges to transfer into Hana’s class.

Zatsu Tabi (That’s Journey)

Chika Suzugamori is a college student who has been shopping some manga pitches around to publishers ever since she won a rookie manga award, but keeps getting rejected. Just as she was about to lose hope in ever breaking into the manga industry, she decides on a whim to go traveling without any particular goal. During her journey, Chika meets different people, experiences local cultures, and finds new inspiration for her manga.

This Evening’s Episode: “That’s Journey” finale

Riri makes a surprise appearance, inspiring Chika. Yoshimoto offers Chika a shot to get her one-off published.

Spy x Family season 3

In order to ensure World Peace, a master spy who has to “build a family” to execute a mission, not realising that the girl he adopts as his daughter is a telepath, and the woman he agrees to be in a marriage with is a skilled assassin.

This Evening’s Episode: “Avoid Getting Tonitrus Bolts / ????’s Memories“

Donna Schlag, a discipline teacher at Eden Academy who punishes students with Tonitrus Bolts for any infraction regardless how minor it is, inspects Anya’s class. When Damian fears he will get a Tonitrus Bolt for not bringing a handkerchief, Anya gives her handkerchief to him as she has another one in her bag. This will trigger a flashback. Years before he became Loid Forger/ Agent Twilight, Loid was a young, happy boy who enjoyed playing soldier with his friends in a town in Westalis. However, he had a strict father who disapproved of his dreams to join the Westalis Army as the boy was ignorant in thinking the Ostanians are evil monsters.

Champignon Witch (Champignon no Majo)

Luna is a young witch who lives alone in a forest known for its poisonous mushrooms. Feared and shunned by nearby villagers for being a black witch in a kingdom ruled by white witches, Luna is believed to bring illness and death because of the poisonous mushrooms that she leaves everywhere she touches.

Tonight’s Episode: “Luna the Black Witch“

A young witch living deep in the forest occasionally visits a nearby town to sell her medicines and buy books.

May I Ask for One Final Thing? (Saigo ni Hitotsu dake Onegai Shitemo Yoroshii Deshou ka)

In the middle of a ball, Scarlet’s fiancé, Prince Kyle, suddenly calls off their engagement. She’s falsely accused of being a bully, and people unfairly call her a “Villainess.” At her wit’s end, she asks for one last favor: to give him a good fist in the face. So begins Scarlet’s story of revenge against Kyle and his corrupt cronies.

Tonight’s Episode: “I Considered A Negotiated Resolution, But May I Biff and Pow Those Noblemen Instead?“

Scarlet meets with Lord Zatharin in order to secure an invitation to the slave auction. Zatharin is willing to allow Scarlet to attend the auction, but only under the condition she hand over Nanaka. Scarlet eventually explains that after leaving her sheltered lifestyle and witnessing how normal people live in the kingdom, she is determined to punish those who would exploit them. The Lady Terenezza, having abandoned the now-disgraced Prince Kyle is plotting Scarlet’s downfall.

Mashle: Magic and Muscles (“Masshuru”) season 2

This is a world of magic where magic is used for everything. But deep in the forest exists a young man who spends his time training and bulking up. He can’t use magic, but he enjoys a peaceful life with his father. His muscular body will have to protect him from the magic users who are out to get him, now that his magic-lack is revealed.

Tonight’s Episode: “Mash Burnedead and the Brawny Balloon“

The 12 entrants compete for 9 keys while avoiding three axe-wielding minotaurs that are immune to magic. Their injuries also heal instantly, making them impossible to take down. Mash is asked to team up by Max, who can alter the size of objects.

Oshi no Ko (“My Favorite Idol” or “Their Idol’s Children”) season 3

Goro Amemiya works as an OB-GYN in a small rural town and is a huge fan of upcoming idol Ai Hoshino. After an unexpected meeting, Goro ends up dying suddenly only to be reborn as one of Ai’s children; a boy named Aquamarine Hoshino (or Aqua for short). He and his twin sister Ruby then grows up as one of show-biz’s biggest secrets.
As Aqua continues his quest to find his father—the puppet master behind his mother’s murder—within the Japanese entertainment industry. But to also track down the truth behind Ai and Goro’s deaths, Ruby keeps rising in the entertainment world.

Tonight’s Episode: “Down Bad“

As B-Komachi, Akane, and Aqua continue to grow within their respective industries, Kana grows cold when Aqua discloses his relationship with Akane has become genuine. MEM-cho notices Kana’s change in demeanor, prompting her to ask Kana on her troubles. MEM-cho meets Aqua after his shoot for the online show Dig Deep! Chase the Impawsible, where she requests that he treat Kana more fairly. Meanwhile Ruby is becoming quite the manipulator.

Jujutsu Kaisen: The Culling Game (Jujutsu Kaisen Shimetsu Kaiyuu Zenpen)

Negative human emotions – regret, bitterness, shame – are the source of all curses that infest the world and hide in everyday life, leading to death in the worst cases. Yuji Itadori, a particularly strong young man, attempts to save a friend from a curse, only to wind up consuming the special grade curse of Ryoumen Sukuna’s finger. Only a curse can eliminate another curse, and Yuji’s career as a cursed person who must exorcise curses has now begin. Now that curses are mainstream, the Culling Game begins, pushing Yuji and his allies to their limits.

Tonight’s Episode: “About the Culling Game“

Tengen explains that the host in Suguru Geto’s body is named Kenjaku, and that the Culling Games’ purpose is to collect enough cursed energy to force evolution throughout all mankind in Japan by assimilating with them. The sorcerers learn that the Culling Games will not end until every player has been killed; however, one of the rules allows the creation of new rules, which they can use to free players. Meanwhile, Fumihiko Takaba, a comedian lamenting his failed career, is unknowingly a player.

The Beginning After The End (Saikyou no Ousama, Futatabime no Jinsei wa Nani o Suru? lit. ‘What Will the Mighty King Do in His Second Life?’)

King Grey is a once-powerful ruler reborn as Arthur Leywin, a boy with untapped potential. He discovers that his new life is filled with danger and adventure at every turn. From mastering powerful spells to facing fierce enemies, Arthur must use his skills and wits to protect those he cares about and uncover the secrets of his mysterious reincarnation.

Tonight’s Episode: “Meeting The King“

The monster, named Sylvia, claims to be Arthur’s ally and helps him recover. Afterwards, she shows Arthur he has been unconscious for days and his parents were forced to continue their journey without him. More time passes and while Arthur wants to leave, the forest is full of monsters, and Sylvia cannot leave her cave. Sylvia shows Arthur it is possible to use magic whilst absorbing more from the environment at the same time, allowing spells to be cast indefinitely. However, she refuses to teach him while evil lives within his heart.

Golden Kamuy final season(Goruden Kamui)

Saichi Sugimoto, a survivor of the battle of 203 Hill in the Russo-Japanese War has become a miner in Hokkaido in order to provide for the widow of his dead comrade, Toraji. He hears a dubious story of hidden Ainu gold stashed by a criminal group, and accidentally finds clues to its location. He decides to search for the gold along with an Ainu girl, Asirpa, who rescues him from Hokkaido’s harsh northern wilderness. Though other parties are also hunting for the gold.

Tonight’s Episode: “Tokushirou-san’s Number One“

The madness of confused battle in Sapporo Beer Factory runs it murderous course as the hunt for the last couple of tattooed skins comes to its bloody conclusion. Sniper versus sniper as only snipers know how, interrupting Usami and Kadokura. The serial killer has a burning need to escape and pursue the innocent Asirpa. “Jack the Ripper” meet “Immortal” Sugimoto. And now the Fire Department pours in. Enter Lt. Tsurumi of the 7th. Ueji Keiji will have his greatest disappointment and Private Usami his greatest joy..
