Screening of Saturday 9th August 2025

JAFWA continues in August (Winter Hours:- 4:15PM->9:45PM)

There are two important events for JAFWA-goers to acknowledge on this date.
The first is the sombering anniversary of the world-shaking event caused by the use of a nuclear weapon in warfare eighty years ago. With all the terrible and tumultuous consequences that derived thereof.
The second is far more cheerful. JAFWA‘s screening returns for August!

This week JAFWA is in the final stages of finishing one regular program before starting a new one in two weeks time. This week 3 regular shows finish up, and because several finished up last month, this week we will be screening two episodes of a few shows. Next week your Overlord intends to have a movie.

If you would like to showcase the anime that holds great meaning and value to you, please offer to sponsor a night of JAFWA and screen your favourites. If you don’t want to sponsor an entire night like both Lindsay and Elliot did previously, there is the other scheme for our signed up members. On the night nearest your birthday, as Greg and Sally did, you can nominate something to play during the Dinner Break (limited to 30 minutes max). You may have to help us source this material, so plan and inform us in advance please.

And there is the end of year irregular screening to consider. What do you want to see in it?

• From Thursday July 31^st 2025, — select cinemas screening the latest Detective Conan movie – “One Eyed Flashback”. Check to see which sessions are subbed or dubbed.
• Monday August 18^th 2025, 6:30PM — Luna Monday double feature at Leederville – “Akira” and “Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence” Japanese language, English subtitles, 15 minute intermission between the two movies.

• Saturday October 11^th 2025, — JAFWA returns to Summer hours.

Apocalypse Hotel

There is a solitary hotel in Tokyo’s Ginza district. After society has collapsed, humanity has disappeared, and nature has begun to reclaim most of the land. Despite the lack of guests, Yachiyo is a hotel management robot who continues to manage the Ginzarou hotel alongside other robots.

This Evening’s Episode: “Aim to Be the Number One Hotel in the Galaxy” finale

For centuries the robot-run Hotel Gingarou, in what was Tokyo’s Ginza district, have been awaiting the return of humans who evacuated the planet due to a pandemic contagion. In the meantime they have been serving extra-terrestrial visitors. But one day an actual human arrives. What is acting-acting-manager Yachiyo to do?

Mob Psycho 100 III

Shigeo Kageyama’s nickname is “Mob”. A slang term for a background character, someone who doesn’t stand out. In truth he is an incredibly powerful psychic who has suppressed his emotions in order to avoid causing a catastrophe. Mob would like nothing better than to live a normal life and have feelings just like anyone else, but with his incredible psychic powers there’s no telling what might happen if he did.

This Evening’s Episode: “Mob 3 ~Trauma~“

Ritsu senses something is wrong and rushes off to find Mob, realizing “that thing” has re-emerged from his brother. All who try to stop Mob from reaching his date with Tsubomi are blown away. And within the 100% emotionally unleashed mind of the world’s most powerful psychic emerges the “true” Shigeo Kageyama, who is no longer content to wear the facade of “Mob”. What is Mob to do? What is the world to do?

Ameku M.D.: Doctor Detective (“Ameko Takao no Suiri Karte” literally “Ameku Takao’s Mystery Medical Record”)

Dr. Takao Ameku is the brilliant yet eccentric director of investigative pathology at Tenikai General Hospital, in charge of diagnosing patients the other hospital departments cannot. However, due to her love of solving mysteries, Takao also gets involved with mysterious deaths and murders, all while dragging along her assistant Yu Takanashi in her various adventures.

This evening’s Episode: “Drowning in a Dry Room [Part 1]“

Yu is to be reassigned to Junsei University Hospital’s General Medicine department to replace a doctor who can no longer work. Takao discovers the doctor, Kuwata Seiji, is a murder suspect. Meeting with Seiji’s father Ryuichiro they learn Seiji is suspected of murdering his brother Daiki, who drowned alone in a locked room despite there being no water.

The Apothecary Diaries (Kusuriya no Hitorigoto) season 2

Apothecary Maomao was just out collecting herbs when she was kidnapped by procurers for the Imperial harem, an easy way for unscrupulous people to get money by having “relatives” go work in the Rear Palace. Hiding her skills and knowledge, Maomao hopes to just glide by, earning as little as possible for her kidnappers during her term of service, but such is not to be: when royal infants begin dying, Maomao can’t resist letting people know the cause. This catches the eye of the far-too-handsome Jinshi, who elevates Maomao from laundry maid to poison taster to the Emperor’s favourite concubine. So much for flying under the radar…

Tonight’s Episode: “Royal Guard“

Shisui made Maomao the apothecary to protect her, never meaning for her to meet Shenmei. She gives Shisui Jinshi’s hairpin, asking her to return it someday. At the royal forces camp, Lakan proposes triggering an avalanche to disable the Shi armory. Jinshi agrees, despite the dishonor. Soon Maomao will finally realise who Jinshi is.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Die Neue These (Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu Die Neue These Kaikou) season 3

In humanity’s distant future, two interstellar states – the monarchic Galactic Empire and the democratic Free Planets Alliance – are embroiled in a never-ending war. The story focuses on the exploits of rivals Reinhard von Lohengramm and Yang Wen-li as they rise to power and fame in the Galactic Empire and the Free Planets Alliance respectively.

Subaru Natsuki is an ordinary high school student who is lost in an alternate world, where he is rescued by a beautiful, silver-haired girl. He stays near her to return the favour, but the destiny she is burdened with is more than Subaru can imagine. Enemies attack one by one, and both of them are killed. He then finds out he has the power to rewind death, back to the time he first came to this world. But only he remembers what has happened since.

Tonight’s Episodes: “A Hideous Dinner Party” and “The Result of the Battle for Priestella“

Otto and the city knights find themselves unable to corner Lye, while elsewhere Roy is able to easily outmatch Julius and Ricardo with his sword mastery, martial arts, and magic. Roy further disturbs Julius by constantly calling him “Brother” and referring to a past event he can’t remember. Meanwhile, Al activates the trap set for Capella, crumbling the entire city hall directly onto her. Otto deduces that Lye’s superhuman ability is the result of obtaining the skills of whoever he consumes with his Authority. An awakened Beatrice arrives as back-up and Lye surprisingly reveals to already know Beatrice’s name, mimicking Rem, causing the two to realise that they must beat him now so Subaru doesn’t meet him. Beatrice holds off Lye, powering her spells with magic stones given to her by Al, until Felt arrives with their secret weapon: Echidna’s staff. However, before they can finish him off, a third Sin Archbishop of Gluttony appears and forces them to let her and her brothers escape.

The Eminence in Shadow (Kage no Jitsuryokusha ni Naritakute!) season 2

Even in his past life, Cid’s dream wasn’t to become a protagonist or a final boss. He’d rather lie low as a minor character until it’s prime time to reveal he’s a mastermind or at least, do the next best thing-pretend to be one. And now that he’s been reborn into another world, he’s ready to set the perfect conditions to live out his dreams to the fullest.

Tonight’s Episodes: “Determination” and “Highest“

Shadow Garden infiltrates a cult facility seeking another relic but finds it already gone. Cid plans to rescue Reina for Rose but overhears Perv and Reina plotting to kill Rose after the wedding, also revealing the latter was working with the Cult the entire time. Shadow hopes that revealing this will turn Rose into a bloody tyrant. But it is Cid who convinces Rose to take action, and accidentally leaves the ring behind.
At the wedding Rose publicly refuses to marry Perv and puts on the ring believing it will give her powers. Then appears Mordred who possesses the missing relic. Its proximity to the ring allows him to activate the Black Rose and summon Archdemon Ragnarok to destroy all of Oriana. Mordred is stunned when, in his moment of victory, Cid appears as Lord Shadow and casually severs Ragnarok’s arm. Mordred needs to explain everything.
