JAFWA continues in April

Tis’ the season Sakura blooming with the unfolding of Spring in Japan. In Perth we will have to wait perhaps 6 months for the tree up the road from JAFWA does blossom. What to do until then? Come to JAFWA to consider suggestions.

This week we say good bye to two regular series – “The Weakest Tamer went on a Journey to Pick up Trash”, and the current chapter of “Rising of the Shield Hero” reaches its conclusion.
Come May we will have a lot of new series starting, but this week we have room for a couple of preview items – a look at what automation does without humans in “Apocalypse Hotel”, and a double episode of preview item “Solo Levelling” based off of the Korean manga/manhwa.

Both Elliot and Greg have provided little 2 minute shows that you might be interested in.

If you don’t want to sponsor an entire night like both Lindsay and Elliot did last year, there is the other scheme for our signed up members. On the night nearest your birthday, as Greg and Sally did, you can nominate something to play during the Dinner Break (limited to 30 minutes max). You may have to help us source this material, so plan and inform us in advance please.

Barring a resurgence of COVID-19 pestilence, these fannish events of interest are scheduled to happen:

• From Thursday April 10^th 2025 — Need to catch up before the second season comes our? The first season compilation movie Kaiju No. 8: Mission Recon (with bonus extra) will be appearing at various cinemas. You should check if the session is subbed or dubbed.
• April 14^th to May 14^th 2025 — The Consulate-General of Japan in Perth will be displaying Yokai Parade at Gallery Central in Northbridge, North Metropolitan TAFE. Unfortunately the OPENING POSTPONED.
• Saturday May 3^rd 2025, 0800-1600 — JAFWA putting on a fund-raising sausage sizzle at Cannington Bunnings. Volunteers welcome.

The Weakest Tamer Began a Journey to Pick Up Trash (“Saijaku Teimaa wa Gomihiroi no Tabi o Hajimemashita”)

Young Ivy can’t catch a break. Though she has a few memories of her past life, she was reborn into an RPG-like world in the weakest class, and worse, as the weakest rank. As a no-star Tamer, even her parents want nothing to do with her, and she soon realizes she must survive on her own. She learns to live off the land and salvage what she can from other people’s leavings. But when Ivy manages to tame Sora, a lowly slime, everything changes for both of them. There’s something special about this frail little monster, and Ivy’s care will bring out the best in both of them.

This Evening’s Episode: “On a Journey, the Three of Us” finale

A few days later, the investigation wraps up with Burksby and Aggrop explaining the extent of the organization’s crime network to Ivy and presents a reward of 150 ladal for her assistance. Borolda tells Ivy that he had to reveal Sora to Rogleef in order to catch the traitors. Ivy then shows Sora to everybody, with Rogleef taking note of its translucence that makes this slime rare. Rogleef asks Ivy if she is willing to consider living in Otolwa, and recalling Luba’s words about how people are more important to place, Ivy reveals her secret about her starless tamer skill to everybody.

Dr Stone season 4 “Science Future”

Modern society is lost when a mysterious light leaves everyone petrified in stone. Thousands of years in the future, super genius Senku awakens and begins restoring civilisation with his Kingdom of Science. After the battle on Treasure Island, Senku and the gang return to the Kingdom of Science. With their sights set on the Moon, they must first voyage to the Americas in hopes of beginning to harvest the required materials. Through teamwork and science, they continue the fight to save humanity once and for all.

This Evening’s Episode: “Those Who Know the Rules; Those Who Make Them“

Senku and Ryusui engage with Stanley in an aerial dogfight, with both sides demonstrating complicated maneuvers in order to get behind the other. Just as Stanley is about to be cornered, Xeno’s hidden weapon is revealed to be a submarine, which travels undetected down the river. It then rams into the Perseus, destroying the bow of the ship, while Xeno’s war team inside captures members of the Kingdom of Science. But Dr Xeno is about to be undermined.

The Apothecary Diaries (Kusuriya no Hitorigoto) season 2

Apothecary Maomao was just out collecting herbs when she was kidnapped by procurers for the Imperial harem, an easy way for unscrupulous people to get money by having “relatives” go work in the Rear Palace. Hiding her skills and knowledge, Maomao hopes to just glide by, earning as little as possible for her kidnappers during her term of service, but such is not to be: when royal infants begin dying, Maomao can’t resist letting people know the cause. This catches the eye of the far-too-handsome Jinshi, who elevates Maomao from laundry maid to poison taster to the Emperor’s favourite concubine. So much for flying under the radar…

This evening’s Episode: “The Hunt“

Jinshi plans to reveal his true status to Maomao during a hunting trip in the northern province after receiving an invitation from Master Shishou. He asks Gyokuyou to “return” Maomao, and she teases him for still referring to her as “that girl”. But assassins are after Jinshi, and an escape through a waterfall reveals….

preview – Apocalypse Hotel

There is a solitary hotel in Tokyo’s Ginza district. After society has collapsed, humanity has disappeared, and nature has begun to reclaim most of the land. Despite the lack of guests, Yachiyo is a hotel management robot who continues to manage the Ginzar? hotel alongside other robots.

Tonight’s Episode: “A True Hotel Is Always Storied“

The advanced Ginzar? hotel has a combination of human and robot servants/workers. But when humanity leaves to avoid a pandemic-like situation, the robots are left behind, knowing nought but keeping the hotel operational, for guests that aren’t coming. The decades pass and various crises need to be managed. But a lack of shower caps may be the last straw….

Oshi no Ko (“My Favorite Idol” or “Their Idol’s Children”) season 2

Goro Amemiya works as an OB-GYN in a small rural town and is a huge fan of upcoming idol Ai Hoshino. After an unexpected meeting, Goro ends up dying suddenly only to be reborn as one of Ai’s children; a boy named Aquamarine Hoshino (or Aqua for short). He and his twin sister Ruby then grows up as one of show-biz’s biggest secrets.
As Aqua continues his quest to find his father—the puppet master behind his mother’s murder—within the Japanese entertainment industry, he finds himself acting in a stage play based on the wildly popular manga Tokyo Blade. Surrounded by competent professionals— including his friends Kana and Akane—it looks like this will be one of his easier jobs… If only things could be that easy.

Tonight’s Episode: “Freedom“

To prepare for the trip to Miyazaki, Kana offers to take Aqua shopping to a buy a proper suitcase, to which he agrees. After spending most the day together, Kana returns home wondering if it is possible to start dating Aqua and what his real relationship with Akane is. The next day, Aqua meets Akane with the intention of breaking up with her. But is Ai’s killer really dead?

Rising of the Shield Hero (Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari) season 3

Naofumi Iwatani was summoned into a fantasy world along with three other people to become the world’s Heroes. Each of the heroes were respectively equipped with their own legendary equipment when summoned. Naofumi happened to receive the Legendary Shield, the sole defensive equipment, while the others received weapons capable of attacking. Unlike the other heroes who are fully supported by the kingdom and gain several strong allies each, Naofumi’s luck turns to the worse, shunned by everyone from the King to peasants, Naofumi is forced to train as a hero alone while working to make ends meet acquiring only the most pitiful of followers.

Tonight’s Episode: “The Ones We Must Protect” finale

Naofumi and Raphtalia start training with Sadeena and Gaelion to tap into the power of the Dragon Veins to increase their abilities. But when assassins target Raphtalia, Sadeena reveals that Raphtalia is a descendant of the royal family of Q’Ten Lo, an isolated nation, with Sadeena protecting her and her parents since they took refuge in Lurolona, fleeing from the dispute for the throne. Naofumi decides to confront the empire of Q’Ten Lo.

preview – Solo Leveling

It’s been over a decade since the sudden appearance of the “gates”—the paths that connect our world with a different dimension. Since then, certain humans have awakened to supernatural powers. We call these individuals “hunters.” Hunters make their living by using their powers to conquer dungeons inside the gates. Notoriously weak hunter named Sung Jin-woo gets a unique opprtunity to get stronger.

Tonight’s Episodes: “I’m Used to It” and “If I Had One More Chance“

Sung Jin-woo, considered the weakest Hunter in the world, enters a dungeon gate with his healer friend Lee Joo-hee and other stronger Hunters. After the boss is killed, the gate does not collapse but instead reveals a second connected dungeon. The party is split evenly on whether or not to proceed; Jin-woo casts the tiebreaker to send them down into the second half of the double dungeon. The party finds the dungeon empty save for a large room filled with statues, which come alive and begin slaughtering the Hunters. Jin-woo realizes that the dungeon they are in has specific rules by which to survive the statues. But the other Hunters are not prepared to co-operate, and Jin-woo is left to rage against his imminent death.

Overlord season 4

With his foundations now set in this new world, the first steps of Ains Ooal Gown’s master plan apparent begin to come to fruition. The value of Carne village and especially the political value of his alter ego Momon are reaffirmed; the “hidden” genius of his actions is continuously met with shock and awe by Demiurge, Albedo, the rest of his guardians, and even Ains himself at his “great wisdom.” His attempts to act in a way befitting the ruler of Nazarick, continuing to further cement his guardian’s loyalty, push him ever further down the path of not-so-intentional world domination.

Tonight’s Episode: “Well-prepared Traps“

Ramposa mourns the death of his son, believing it marks the end of his Kingdom. Shalltear retrieves Eight Fingers, including Cocco Doll whom she gives to Kyouhukou to test Cocco’s loyalty. As Ainz advances on the capital, Azuth flies to stop them and fights Albedo. Ainz is ambushed by another warrior in platinum armour, Riku Aganeia, who traps Ainz in a barrier he cannot break.

DanDaDan

Takakura, an occult maniac who doesn’t believe in ghosts, and Ayase, a girl who doesn’t believe in aliens, try to overcome their differences when they encounter the paranormal.

Tonight’s Episode: “First Love“

Seiko reveals Jiji will be staying with them due to his parents being hospitalized; Jiji later discloses to Momo that his parents are victims of supernatural circumstances, leading him to seek out Seiko under the recommendation of various spirit mediums. While Jiji transfers to Momo and Okarun’s school, Okarun grows anxious and jealous with Jiji bantering with Momo. But then Okarun encounters a sentient anatomical model named Taro running away.
