No Screening this Saturday, 28th December 2024

No JAFWA screening until Saturday 11th January 2025!

The December Solstice has happened, and as the days prepare to get shorter (though not yet cooler) know well that it is the time of celebrations, festivities and holidays (and Holy Days for many religions). For instance, Christmas Eve in Japan is the number one date to go on a date with your prospective significant other, then the next day celebrate with Family eating KFC.

Whether we celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Pancha Ganapati, Saturnalia, Winter Solstice, HumanLight, Kwanzaa, Jediism, Festivus, Goatsmas, or something else — or even nothing at all — I personally think we should acknowledge that centuries ago on December 25th a child was born who, by age 30, would transform the world. His achievements might justly be celebrated wherever his truths hold sway. We owe a YUGE debt to this devout but unorthodox Christian who was a bit of a jerk and into the occult but was also “one of the most influential scientists of all time and a key figure in the scientific revolution” (Wikipedia). In his honor, and to shake up the silly season, I humbly offer someone else’s sometimes arrhythmic version of “The Ten Days of Newton.” And I wish you all a very merry Newtonmas!

The Ten Days of Newtonmas
On the tenth day of Newtonmas,
One of our greatest natural philosophers gave to us,
Ten confessed sins,
Nine moons of Jupiter and Saturn moving according to the same law that makes an apple fall,
Eight volumes of mathematics,
Seven colors of light,
Six planets orbiting according to Kepler’s Laws,
Five lessons of life (#3 is mis-attributed*),
Four rules of reasoning,
Three laws of motion,
Two branches of calculus,
And a universal law of gravitation

I will have to revise the first hint for our new January 2025 program, as it turns out that the fourth season of “Overlord” is being pushed to the second week due to the fact that the first episode of “Re:Zero” 3rd season turns out to be 90 minutes long. And with that, DanDaDan most of our late night program gets pushed to the second week (and the Late Break moved earlier). As does a couple of earlier in the evening episodes, as we can’t be certain of having in time for January 11th, being as they will only be screened in Japan a day or two earlier.

If you don’t want to sponsor an entire night like both Lindsay and Elliot did last year, there is the other scheme for our signed up members. On the night nearest your birthday, as Sally did, you can nominate something to play during the Dinner Break (limited to 30 minutes max). You may have to help us source this material, so plan and inform us in advance please.
