Event Afternoon before JAFWA Screening

JAFWA has the hall from about 1PM to 4:30PM, where it is make our own amusement time.

Does anyone want hall space for nerf gun battles? Bring your own ping-pong? Table top games? Does anybody have their own game machine and games they want their fellow JAFWAites to play? JAFWA will bring out the projector and screen. I am not certain we have access to the outdoor area, but we will try to keep you off the street.

In the past people have brought along video games and the hardware to play them, and sewing machines for cosplay creating. What do you want to do? Just so long as it fun, legal, ethical, and we don’t scuff the floor of the Hall noticeably.

We are approaching the end of 2024, and it is time to wrap up so many of our regular series. To make way for a whole new lot of regular series in 2025!
You too can hope to influence the selection of JAFWA‘s new regular series by filling in our survey form during the Dinner Break. Inform us what previewed anime titles shown at JAFWA are most important to you, so that it might help your committee decide what starts in January.
And never forget the monthly member’s prize – the more times you attend per month, the more chances to win!

Last Saturday was a big day for anime. There were the lucky winners who scored double passes to attend the Advance screening of Ghost Cat Anzu at the Luna Leederville preview screening. While aimed at a slightly younger audience than currently typical at JAFWA, it is a worthy anime to watch and I could not help but see what appeared to be some homages to the rich visuals of Studio Ghibli, from the occasional background to richly decorated interior scenes, let alone the selection of supernatural characters. Though the characters were slightly more venal than Studio Ghibli protagonists – selfish greed, manipulativeness, and temper tantrums came up almost as often as for normal children, and even the titular character. The only downside was that they chose the wrong colour for the subtitles, often losing words and sentences against the bright background. Even so, I advise the rest of you to try attending the general cinema release starting on December 5^th.

This week we bring many of our beloved regular series to a finish, even if it takes a couple of episodes. We are left almost content in the knowledge that for many of these animes that this is the end of season one, and that a season two will be made.

If you don’t want to sponsor an entire night like Lindsay or Elliot, there is the other scheme for our signed up members. On the night nearest your birthday, you can nominate something to play during the Dinner Break (limited to 30 minutes max). You may have to help us source this material, so plan in advance please. Sally has chosen November 30.

‘Tis Time for “Torture,” Princess (Hime-sama Goumon mo Jikan desu)

In an ongoing battle between the humanity’s Imperial Army and the demonic Hell-hordes, the princess from the army has been captured along with her holy sword Ex. Since regular torture is prohibited by the prisoner of war treaty between the two parties, the grand inquisitor, Torture Tortura, employs unusual “torture” (in air quotes) techniques.

This evening’s Episode: “Episode 12” finale

Vanilla Peschutz reminisces on how the Princess is her first friend, and wants to do something with her. Vanilla invites her to a skating rink. Princess mistakes this as torture, but later realizes it isn’t, and teaches Vanilla how to skate. As the princess recovers from a cold, Tortura tells Princess there’s going to be position shuffles in the Hell-Horde. Princess and the Hell-Lord are teleported to an alternate world after being hit by lightning.

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End (Sousou no Furiiren)

For ten years, elf mage Frieren traveled with Himmel the hero, Heiter the priest, and Eisen the dwarf warrior as they quested to destroy the demon king. At the end of their journey, Frieren set out on her own, not quite understanding how differently time flows for her versus her human companions. Reunited after fifty years only to see them wither and die, Frieren begins to ponder the nature of connections at a time when it’s already too late to say goodbye.

This Evening’s Episode: “The Height of Magic“

Fern’s Zoltrakk fails to kill the replica of Frieren. Frieren acknowledges that she anticipated her replica surviving the attack, noting that it was always destined to be a battle of attrition. At the entrance to the final part of the dungeon, Denken and Methode determine the locations of the remaining replicas and strategize on how best to combat them.

Spice and Wolf: merchant meets the wise wolf (“Ookami to Koushinryou: merchant meets the wise wolf”)

The life of a traveling merchant is a lonely one, a fact with which Kraft Lawrence is well acquainted. Wandering from town to town with just his horse, cart, and whatever wares have come his way, the peddler has pretty well settled into his routine—that is, until the night Lawrence finds a wolf goddess asleep in his cart. She strikes up a bargain with the merchant to lend him the cunning of “Holo the Wisewolf” to increase his profits in exchange for taking her along on his travels. Lawrence soon learns, though, that having an ancient goddess as a traveling companion can be a bit of a mixed blessing.

Tonight’s Episodes: “Path of the Snake God and Answer of the Wise Wolf” and “Miracle’s Path and Journey’s Continuation” Finale

Fleeing the frightened and angry villagers of Tereo, Lawrence, Holo, Elsa and Evan reach the Snake god’s cave. The Holo express heads towards Enberch town, while Enberch forces head towards Tereo. Elsa’s faith is tested and found, while Holo questions. It may be time for a miracle, and if all goes right then Holo can take her time reading. Bishop Mendez and Mr Riendott may have their heads turned by Lawrence’s trade proposal. Can calamity be avoided and everyone profit? Will Holo ever reach her home?

Bye Bye, Earth (“Bai Bai, Aasu”)

Despite having incredible fighting skills and the strength to wield the enormous sword Runding, Belle Lablac has grown up as an outcast due to being the only human in a world of anthropomorphic animals. Desperate to find a place where she belongs, she goes on a quest to find others like her.

Tonight’s Episodes: “Silence of Keys Unplayed” and “Spiral: Howling Sword, Rusty Nail” Finale

The king says the final test to become a Nomad is simply to play a piano from the heart. Belle has never heard of pianos, but when she presses a key, it makes a resonating note, but eventually fails the test. Adonis is attacked by thugs and kills them. It is his turn to take the test, but when Belle leaves, he attacks the guards while demanding the king explain why his friends keep getting corrupted by their swords. The king claims this is all their god’s design and Adonis is horrified to see zombie versions of the people he killed. He runs away in shame, but is surrounded by miasma and disappears. Adonis wakes up in a void and is greeted by a woman named Dram who forged Runding. She gives him a sword called Rusty Nail that can change shape and repair itself and does not deteriorate at his touch, then has Sian train him. While Belle is traumatised she joins a battle, but she is sluggish and gets wounded.

Kaiju No.8 (“Kaijuu Hachigou”)

The story follows Kafka Hibino, who after ingesting a parasitic creature, gains the ability to turn into a kaiju, he must now navigate using his power while trying to become part of an organization that eliminates kaiju to fulfill a promise he made with a childhood friend. Now he’s made the Defense Force’s neutralization list under the code name Kaiju No. 8.

Tonight’s Episodes: “Kaiju No. 8 Captured” and “Kafka Hibino” Finale

The top brass of the Defense Force, led by Isao Shinomiya, order the Third Division to hand over Kafka to headquarters in the Ariake maritime base his transport being overseen by the Deputy Director of the Defense Force, Keiji Itami. While detained, Kafka is informed by Mina that she and the rest of the Third Division do not see him as an enemy and will do everything they can to help him avoid disposal. Reno, Iharu, Haruichi and Aoi are set to be transferred to other divisions for further training while the Third Division base is rebuilt after its destruction by Kaiju No. 10. Isao fights Kafka in a containment cell to dispose of him, but deep in Kafka’s subconscious, the mysterious kaiju that infected him gains control of his body, becoming more powerful, increases in size and overwhelms Isao. In Kafka’s subconscious, the mysterious kaiju devours him and he falls into an abyss. He needs a helping hand.

Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead (Zom 100: Zombie ni Naru Made ni Shitai 100 no Koto)

Surviving a zombie apocalypse beats being a wage slave any day. After spending years slaving away for a soul-crushing company, Akira’s life has lost its luster. But when a zombie apocalypse ravages his town, it gives him the push he needs to live for himself. Now Akira’s on a mission to complete all 100 items on his bucket list before he…well, kicks the bucket.

Tonight’s Episode: “Hometown of the Dead III“Finale

A flashback shows that Higurashi grew from a happy child to an antisocial loner who began to despise society, especially people like Akira. He decides to take it out on Akira and make him choose between him and his father. Akira seemingly turns into a zombie but quickly gets the upper hand on Higurashi.

Chainsaw Man (Chensaa Man)

In a world where Devils (Akuma) are born from human fears. Devils are usually dangerous and malevolent, their power is proportional to the fear they incite. However, humans can form contracts with them to use their power, and there are individuals specialising in hunting and employing them, called Devil Hunters. A Devil may, in certain conditions, inhabit the body of a dead human, gaining some of their memories and personality; such a creature is called a Fiend.

Tonight’s Episode: “Bruised & Battered”

Denji and Power visit Aki in the hospital and tell him that only Kobeni and Madoka survived the assault, besides them. Makima takes Denji and Power to the cemetery to meet with a Devil Hunter from Division 1, Himeno, and Aki’s trainer, who is revealed to be Kishibe. This self-proclaimed strongest devil hunter begins training them to become stronger by killing Denji and nearly killing Power repeatedly.
