For us August is officially the last month of Winter. There are also a couple of anniversaries we should take note of from 1945 and be saddened – the only time in real life the atomic bombs have been used in war.
On a somewhat cheerier note we have International Patlabor Day on August 10^th. Do you know where your Ingram is?

This week JAFWA starts a new regular series – “‘Tis Time for “Torture,” Princess”, and come to the all-to-soon, final, almost double-length episode of the 4^th TV series of “Demon Slayer”. Because of the extra length episode we have bumped our preview item we intended to play until next week. But that means I still have 5 minutes in the program to fill, so I hope you don’t mind a repeat of something we showed in 2020.

For those of you who are interested, the Japanese Film Festival has gone from showing a series of Japanese movies online, to now showing TV episodes.

If you don’t want to sponsor an entire night like Lindsay did in March, and the one coming in November, there is the other scheme for our signed up members. On the night nearest your birthday, you can nominate something to play during the Dinner Break (limited to 30 minutes max). You may have to help us source this material, so plan in advance please.

And there is the end of year irregular screening to consider. What do you want to see in it?

‘Tis Time for “Torture,” Princess (Hime-sama Goumon mo Jikan desu)

In an ongoing battle between the humanity’s Imperial Army and the demonic Hell-hordes, the princess from the army has been captured along with her holy sword Ex. Since regular torture is prohibited by the prisoner of war treaty between the two parties, the grand inquisitor, Torture Tortura, employs unusual “torture” (in air quotes) techniques.

This evening’s Episode: “episode 1“

Princess, and her intelligent weapon Excalibur (Ex) are captured and imprisoned together in a cell. Tortura and Damura goad the princess with freshly-baked toast. Ex proudly goes on a lengthy diatribe about how she would never confess. After some dawdling, the princess confesses, and receives the toast.

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End (Sousou no Furiiren)

For ten years, elf mage Frieren traveled with Himmel the hero, Heiter the priest, and Eisen the dwarf warrior as they quested to destroy the demon king. At the end of their journey, Frieren set out on her own, not quite understanding how differently time flows for her versus her human companions. Reunited after fifty years only to see them wither and die, Frieren begins to ponder the nature of connections at a time when it’s already too late to say goodbye.

This Evening’s Episode: “Aversion to One’s Own Kind“

Frieren rescues Sein, a local priest, from a swamp, and Sein returns the favor by curing Stark after he is bit by a venomous snake. Sein’s brother reveals that Sein has a natural talent for healing spells, and asks Frieren to push Sein into becoming an adventurer, a dream that he had held as a child but eventually lost his passion for, culminating in him turning down an invitation from his best friend ten years ago.

Where Does the Doomsday Train Go? (“Shuumatsu Train Doko e Iku?”)

In a town in a not-so-ordinary countryside, there is a big and strange occurrence happening to its residents. But a young girl named Shizuru Chikura has a strong desire to see her lost friend again. Shizuru and three other girls board an abandoned train, and they set out to the outside world, where survival is not certain. They’ll discover what awaits them at the last stop of the “Doomsday Train.”

This Evening’s Episode: “Isn’t That Bad Karma?“

Following the zombie encounter, the girls reach Higashi-Kurume Station but keep moving when they are suddenly hit with a heavy itching sensation. They then reach Hibarigaoka Station where they are suddenly overcome by traumatic memories from their pasts. Later, continue on to ?izumi-gakuen Station, whose population was turned into “Darkizumites”, a species of humanoid pigs from the popular manga and anime Alice in Nerima Land and live happily with the hero Alice and her friends.

The Apothecary Diaries (Kusuriya no Hitorigoto)

Apothecary Maomao was just out collecting herbs when she was kidnapped by procurers for the Imperial harem, an easy way for unscrupulous people to get money by having “relatives” go work in the Rear Palace. Hiding her skills and knowledge, Maomao hopes to just glide by, earning as little as possible for her kidnappers during her term of service, but such is not to be: when royal infants begin dying, Maomao can’t resist letting people know the cause. This catches the eye of the far-too-handsome Jinshi, who elevates Maomao from laundry maid to poison taster to the Emperor’s favorite concubine. So much for flying under the radar…

Tonight’s Episode: “Blue Roses“

As Maomao continues to work for the pregnant Gyokuyou, and tending to her daughter, Princess Xiaoling, Lakan egged on Jinshi again, this time wanting to see blue roses by the time of the next spring party. Jinshi gives in for the sake of not crossing him, so he asks, of all people, Maomao. She accepts the task at hand, because she wanted to rub it in Lakan’s face.

Spice and Wolf: merchant meets the wise wolf (“Ookami to Koushinryou: merchant meets the wise wolf”)

The life of a traveling merchant is a lonely one, a fact with which Kraft Lawrence is well acquainted. Wandering from town to town with just his horse, cart, and whatever wares have come his way, the peddler has pretty well settled into his routine—that is, until the night Lawrence finds a wolf goddess asleep in his cart. She strikes up a bargain with the merchant to lend him the cunning of “Holo the Wisewolf” to increase his profits in exchange for taking her along on his travels. Lawrence soon learns, though, that having an ancient goddess as a traveling companion can be a bit of a mixed blessing.

Tonight’s Episode: “Sweet Honey and Bitter Armor“

At the Rowan merchant guild Lawrence seeks certification, finding that dealing with Nora the shepherdess brings problems with the Church. Holo teases and Lawrence goes into debt, as his cargo becomes worthless. How to pay back the Remerio Trading Company? Money is tight and tensions rise.

Demon Slayer (Kimetsu no Yaiba) – season 4 – Hashira Training arc

Tanjiro Kamado is a kindhearted and intelligent boy who lives with his family, making money by selling charcoal. Everything changes when his family is attacked and slaughtered by demons (oni). Tanjiro and his sister Nezuko are the sole survivors of the incident. Nezuko has now become a demon, but still surprisingly shows signs of human emotion and thought. Tanjiro becomes a demon slayer to help his sister turn human again and to prevent the same tragedy that happened to him and his sister, from happening to others.

Tonight’s Episode: “The Hashira Unite” finale

Ubuyashiki Kagaya reveals Kibatsuji Muzan’s role in his illness; he was a member of the Ubuyashiki bloodline and the family was cursed as a result of his crimes as a demon. Muzan disregards this and remains confident he will find Nezuko, but Kagaya assures the demon of his failure, unable to see his desire to become eternal pales in comparison to humanity’s anger and will to survive.

KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on This Wonderful World! (Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku o!) season 3

The further adventures of Kazuma Satou who, after he dies of a heart attack after pushing a girl out of the way of a truck, which turned out to be a tractor, is sent to an RPG-like world, going on various adventures alongside a goddess named Aqua, a magician named Megumin, and a knight named Darkness.

Tonight’s Episode: “A Farewell to This Lavish Lifestyle!”

Word of the body-swapping incident spreads through the capital, turning Kazuma into a social pariah. That night, Chris approaches him and asks for his help in stealing the necklace due to a dark secret it possesses: the body switch becomes permanent if one of the switched bodies dies, meaning one can achieve eternal life by endlessly switching bodies with a younger person and then murdering them. Hearing of this, Kazuma finally agrees to help Chris.

The Witch and the Beast (“Majo to Yajuu”)

Ashaf, a tall quietly spoken man and his partner, Guideau, who has the appearance of a girl, but whose masked and powerful alter ego is contained within a coffin strapped to Ashaf’s back. They are tasked by the Order of Magical Resonance to bring rogue witches to account and they travel the country seeking a particular witch who poses as grave threat to society.

Tonight’s Episode: “The Witch and the Demon Sword: Act II”

Ashaf instructs Guideau to delay Cugat so Helga can escape, but Cugat eventually overwhelms her. He takes Guideau, Helga, and Ashgan into custody, imprisoning both women in magical armor. However, Ashaf intercedes, and suggests to Cugat that Helga was framed for the murders by the Executioners.

Undead Unluck

Fuuko Izumo is known as a woman cursed with “Unluck.” Fuuko brings misfortune to anyone who touches her and the scale is proportional to how long they had physical contact. She’s saved by Andy, a man who cannot die (“Undead”). He hopes to figure out a way to use Fuuko’s misfortune to finally bring him death. The unlikely pair team up to complete missions given to them by the Book of Revelations, but if they or any of the other negators in their union fail, the book can punish humanity.

Tonight’s Episodes: “Memento Mori“

Anno Un uses the Artifact Soul Caliber to transfer Fuuko’s spirit into Andy’s story. Fuuko awakens in the Old West era outside Longing, Nevada where she is confronted by bandits. Andy along with a crew of cowboys save her. Thus begins the long story.
