This is it! The first JAFWA screening of 2024!

We hope you enjoyed the Summer Holiday Break (including minor things like Christmas and major things like New Year’s Day) and are feeling hale and hearty, as we eagerly prepare for JAFWA’s glorious return this Saturday. Hopefully no-one suffered too much from anime withdrawal.
Hopefully you managed to alleviate your cravings for anime by watching in the cinemas such Japanese movies as “The Boy and The Heron” as well as “Godzilla Minus One”. And since anime is approaching mainstream-normal these days, expects other gems to come to the cinemas later this year. (but as always, we want the Japanese language, with English subs)

Dial the excitement up (but you probably should stop before you reach Delirium level). We continue on with 6 regular anime series from last year, and start 4 new regular anime series this week, though one of the new regular items is the second season of an anime we have already screened at JAFWA a while back. There will be no preview episodes this week.

Dr Stone season 3 “New World”

Modern society is lost when a mysterious light leaves everyone petrified in stone. Thousands of years in the future, super genius Senku awakens and begins restoring civilisation with his Kingdom of Science. With the Stone Wars over, the former members of Tsukasa’s Empire of Might join forces with the Kingdom of Science to build a ship capable of sailing across open ocean to seek answers on the mystery of the global petrification. However, before they can begin their voyage Senku and his friends need to find some key resources and push some new scientific advancements to build the type of vessel they need.

This evening’s Episode: “Total War“

No plan survives contact with the battlefield. The Kingdom of Science wants to trick the islanders into throwing the petrification weapon, codenamed Medusa, so they can capture it with a drone. The traitor Moz waits for the right moment to betray them. But the evil Ibara stole Kohaku’s earrings and heard every conversation between Moz and Senku, so he has Kirisame use a fake Medusa. Now our protagonists must remake their plan on the fly and stop Ibara’s counter-attack.

Spy x Family – part 2b

In order to ensure World Peace, a master spy who has to “build a family” to execute a mission, not realising that the girl he adopts as his daughter is a telepath, and the woman he agrees to be in a marriage with is a skilled assassin.

This Evening’s Episode: “The Pastry of Knowledge / The Informant’s Great Romance Plan II“

The five students Anya, Becky, Damian, Emile, and Ewen play Old Maid games to decide which of them to eat the 4 special macarons that are rumored to make those who eat them become smarter.
After failing to get Loid’s help, Franky set out by himself to find a lost cat that belongs to a barista he has a crush on. Nevertheless, Yor offers her help and manages to capture the cat.

The Masterful Cat is Depressed Again Today (Dekiru Neko wa Ky? mo Y?utsu)

One day, a young woman named Saku took in a stray black cat who she later named Yukichi. However, as time went on, Yukichi grew large enough to be mistaken for a bear. Instead of being a threat though, Yukichi spends his time cooking food, doing laundry, and taking care of his owner after she comes home from hard days at work.

This Evening’s Episode: “The Masterful Cat Is Depressed Again Today“

The young employee Saku has adopted a cat and wonders how big it will get. She lives alone with her cat Yukichi, a feline as big as it is special. Yukichi is in fact extraordinarily intelligent, doing his utmost to take care of the house and of his mistress, who on the contrary is far from conscientious and has a habit of neglecting herself and her house. How does the office chief know about Yukichi?

The Apothecary Diaries (Kusuriya no Hitorigoto)

Apothecary Maomao was just out collecting herbs when she was kidnapped by procurers for the Imperial harem, an easy way for unscrupulous people to get money by having “relatives” go work in the Rear Palace. Hiding her skills and knowledge, Maomao hopes to just glide by, earning as little as possible for her kidnappers during her term of service, but such is not to be: when royal infants begin dying, Maomao can’t resist letting people know the cause. This catches the eye of the far-too-handsome Jinshi, who elevates Maomao from laundry maid to poison taster to the Emperor’s favorite concubine. So much for flying under the radar…

Tonight’s Episode: “MaoMaoI“

Maomao, the daughter of an apothecary on the outskirts of the city, is kidnapped by bandits and sold to the Imperial Palace as a laundry woman, serving the Emperor’s concubines, eunuchs, and respective staff in the Outer Palace. Three months later, Maomao notices a fight between two of the Emperor’s concubines, Lihua and Gyokuyou, as rumors swirl around that both of their children are getting sick and dying from a curse.

Ancient Magus Bride season 2 (Mahou Tsukai no Yome)

Chise Hatori, 15 years old. Lost, without hope, and without family, she is bought for money … not by another person, but by a non-human sorcerer named Elias. Though she hesitates, she begins life anew as his apprentice and future wife. Now grown more confident in her role as a sleigh beggy, Chise was able to accept Elias and herself, if not necessarily everything about her situation. After Cartaphilus fell back into a slumber that would not last forever, Chise was able to go back to her regular life. Then she receives an invitation from a mutual aid organization for mages called the College.

Tonight’s Episode: “Needs must when the devil drives. II“

Violet invites everyone to tour the colleges seven most haunted locations. Chise is partnered with Veronica and asks about Philomena’s situation. Veronica is unable to help as she is as bound to her family as much as Philomena is bound to her own, and advises Chise to stop interfering.

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury (Kid? Senshi Gandamu: Suisei no Majo)

An era when a multitude of corporations have entered space and built a huge economic system. A lone girl from the remote planet Mercury transfers to the Asticassia School of Technology, run by the Beneritt Group which dominates the mobile suit industry. Her name is Suletta Mercury. With a scarlet light burning in her pure heart, this girl walks step by step through a new world.

Tonight’s Episode: “Envoys from the Earth“

Two weeks following the bloody conclusion of the Plant Quetta incident, the event was covered up and most of Earth House returned to Asticassia while Miorine stayed with the now comatose Delling. After defending her title in successive matches, Suletta learns of an upcoming open campus where she, as Holder, must participate in a battle royale event.

Jujutsu Kaisen season 2

Satoru Gojo and Suguru Geto were not always enemies. Long before they had what was supposed to be their final encounter during the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons, the pair were fellow students, rivals, and friends. In another world, they would have been the twin shining stars of Jujutsu Sorcery, but one fateful event destroyed any hope of that ever happening. Turn back the clock to witness the mission that drove them to curse one another beyond even death.

Tonight’s Episode: “Dull Knife“

Nanami discovers Ijichi’s bloody body and escorts him to safety. Yuji and Megumi destroy the veil trapping the sorcerers in the city, however the veils trapping Gojo and the civilians remain active. They then rescue an unconscious Ino after he’s dropped from the Central Tower. Meanwhile, despite the seance only supposed to copy the deceased’s body, the soul of Toji is able to completely usurp the grandson’s body, and under her orders to “kill all sorcerers”, promptly kills the grandmother too.

Undead Unluck

F?ko Izumo is known as a woman cursed with “Unluck.” F?ko brings misfortune to anyone who touches her and the scale is proportional to how long they had physical contact. She’s saved by Andy, a man who cannot die (“Undead”). He hopes to figure out a way to use F?ko’s misfortune to finally bring him death. The unlikely pair team up to complete missions given to them by the Book of Revelations, but if they or any of the other negators in their union fail, the book can punish humanity.

Tonight’s Episodes: “Undead and Unluck“

Fuuko Izumi is an 18-year-old girl who is cursed with the power of Unluck. Anyone who touches her directly receives an extreme case of bad luck. Fed up, she decides to commit suicide. Before she can, she meets Undead, a being who cannot die and regenerates from any injury. Undead kidnaps Fuuko and forces her to explain her powers at his hideout. Unbeknownst to either of them, they were followed by a group of agents who plan to capture both of them to study their powers.

The Eminence in Shadow (Kage no Jitsuryokusha ni Naritakute!)

Even in his past life, Cid’s dream wasn’t to become a protagonist or a final boss. He’d rather lie low as a minor character until it’s prime time to reveal he’s a mastermind or at least, do the next best thing-pretend to be one. And now that he’s been reborn into another world, he’s ready to set the perfect conditions to live out his dreams to the fullest.

Tonight’s Episode: “The Truth Within the Memories“

Alpha reveals she is an elf and a descendant of Olivier, the hero who severed Diablos’ left arm one thousand years ago. Cid decides to enter the summoning circle following him and disappears within it, finding himself within the Sanctuary. Alpha appears with the rest of Shadow Garden; after they kidnap Nelson, they enter the Sanctuary as well, as do Princess Alexia and Rose. Sanctuary is actually a massive prison which stores the memories of every past hero.

Goblin Slayer season 2

In a world of fantasy, adventurers come far and wide to join the Guild, in order to complete contracts for whatever jobs are available. An inexperienced priestess joins her first adventuring party, but comes into danger after her first adventurer contract involving goblins goes wrong. After the rest of her party is wiped out, she is saved by a man known as Goblin Slayer, an adventurer whose only purpose is the eradication of goblins with extreme prejudice. And when rumours of his feats begin to circulate, there’s no telling who might come calling next.

Tonight’s Episode: “An Ordinary Spring Day” season 2

Months after the events in the movie where Noble Fencer is rescued, she has set up a training school for novice adventurers which causes a fresh influx of novices to arrive at the town. Priestess has been an adventurer for over a year and is no longer a novice. Goblin Slayer has become popular and respected by experienced adventurers, and a subject of gossip among novices. An arrogant novice adventurer, Wizard Boy, arrives proclaiming he will kill goblins but Goblin Slayer turns down his request to teach him.
