This is it! The final JAFWA screening of 2023!

After this night will be the Summer Holiday Break (including minor things like Christmas), as we eagerly await JAFWA’s glorious return in January 2024.

This week, we have a completely irregular program (except for a single show that didn’t finish in time last screening). Some are quiet, some are cute, there is a story of time-travel and love redeemed, a story to help your arachnophobia, something unknown, and the ridiculous lengths one gores to for love. And possibly a cute little kitten will intrude. Just about something for everyone.

And once this night is done, we will bid you Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas and a Joyful New Year.

Barring a resurgence of COVID-19 pestilence, these fannish events of interest are scheduled to happen:

• Saturday December 9^th 2023 — JAFWA’s final screening for 2023 before we take a holiday. This will be a normal length screening with an irregular program. We request that you, the audience, suggest anime items for inclusion in that night’s program.
• Saturday December 16^th 2023 — JAFWA doing a Bunnings Sausage Sizzle down at Cannington.
• Saturday January 13^th 2024 — JAFWA’s screening resume in 2024.

Natsume’s Book of Friends

Natsume Takashi has the ability to see spirits, which he has long kept secret. However, once he inherits a strange book that belonged to his deceased grandmother, Reiko, he discovers the reason why spirits surround him. Containing the names of these spirits, a binding contract was formed between the spirits and the owner of the book. Now, Natsume is determined to free the spirits and dissolve the contracts. With the help of a spirit cat, his days are filled trying to return the names to these spirits.

This evening’s Episode: “The Name of a Monster “

Natsume meets a shrine god in the form of an elderly woman. He is forced to help her return a mirror to a youkai said to bring disaster.

Shiro Kuma Café (Polar Bear Café)

The “Polar Bear Cafe” is run by a polar bear, and serves both humans and animals daily.

This evening’s Episodes: “Welcome to the Polar Bear’s Cafe / Panda-kun’s Employment“

Pushed by his mother to stop lazing around the house, a Panda searches for a part-time job but has troubling finding one to accommodate his laziness. He soon stumbles upon the Shirokuma Cafe, run by a Polar Bear who is holding interviews for a part-time position with his faithful customer Penguin. Panda applies for the job but fails the interview, with the job instead going to a human girl named Sasako.

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury (Kid? Senshi Gandamu: Suisei no Majo)

An era when a multitude of corporations have entered space and built a huge economic system. A lone girl from the remote planet Mercury transfers to the Asticassia School of Technology, run by the Beneritt Group which dominates the mobile suit industry. Her name is Suletta Mercury. With a scarlet light burning in her pure heart, this girl walks step by step through a new world.

Dawn of Fold continues their attack on Plant Quetta, swiftly eliminating the local garrison and landing troops inside the station to search for Delling. Nika is barely able to signal her comrades not to attack the Earth House ship, but House leader Martin witnesses her act. Meanwhile, Miorine meets up with her father but he gets badly wounded whilst protecting her, prompting her to hastily administer first aid. Elsewhere, Guel escapes his captors and steals a Dawn of Fold mobile suit.

movie – Hello World

In Kyoto in the year 2027, Naomi Katagaki, a male high school student encounters a person who claiming to be Naomi from 10 years in the future. Together, they must change the future and save a classmate, Ruri Ichigy?, whom the younger Naomi starts to date in three months.

movie – Li’l Spider Girl (Wasurenagumo)

Many years ago she was sealed away in the book by her own caretaker – the priest who defeated her monstrous mother but had no heart to kill the yokai child. In modern-day Li’l Spider-Girl is accidentally released from the book by a young girl named Mizuki, and then is taken in by the current owner of the book – book salesman Suzuri. Later on, Mizuki and Suzuri embark on a short adventure to help their new yokai charge in finding her mom.

Golden Kamuy OAV

Saichi Sugimoto, a survivor of the battle of 203 Hill in the Russo-Japanese War has become a miner in Hokkaido in order to provide for the widow of his dead comrade, Toraji. He hears a dubious story of hidden Ainu gold stashed by a criminal group, and accidentally finds clues to its location. He decides to search for the gold along with an Ainu girl, Asirpa, who rescues him from Hokkaido’s harsh northern wilderness. Though other parties are also hunting for the gold.

Tonight’s Episode: “I Fell in Love, and That’s Why I Decided to Escape / A Life and Death Battle vs. The Horrifying Deadly Venom! Deep in the Forests of Hokkaido, A Massive Serpent Lurks!”

Around a campfire, Shiraishi tells Toshiz? Hijikata, Nagakura Shinpachi, Inkarmat and Kiroranke, of his time in Kabato Prison when he met Chouan Kumagishi, a master forger. Shiraishi asked him to draw a shunga for him which he kept for company, but Kumagishi drew the face of a nun who visited prisoners called Sister Miyazawa. Shiraishi thought the picture was badly drawn, a round face with tiny features, but after a while he fell in love with her and decided to escape and meet her. Also told is the Ainu legend of “Sak Somo Ayep” a giant, glistening black snake which is said to inhabit Hokkaido.
