Screening on the evening of Saturday, October 21st 2023
Even with the later start last week, our old enemy the Sun made things difficult. This week we shall erect the Sun Disactivator as our valiant final line of defense against our thermonuclear enemy!
I prefer to think of it that the our quality is determined but the strength of our enemy.
October means a new anime season in Japan, which we tasted last week when our mystery preview item turned out to be “Undead Unluck”.
This week we will screen another couple of preview episodes to broaden our knowledge of anime released in Japan. The first is a nice gentle swords and sorcery story of what happens after adventurers save the world. The second just before the Late Break will be more fiery!
And don’t forget that two of our beloved series have their season finale this week – “The Devil is a Part-time” and “Ningen Fushin”.
Don’t forget that the Perth leg of the Japanese Film Festival starts this week.
We are trying to fill the program for the final screening of 2023 in December. What do you want to see?

Barring a resurgence of COVID-19 pestilence, these fannish events of interest are scheduled to happen:
- October 16th to 22nd 2023 — Japanese Film Festival will be screening in Perth.
- Weekend November 3rd to 5th 2023 — Kai-Con 2023.
- Saturday December 9th 2023 — JAFWA’s final screening for 2023 before we take a holiday. This will be a normal length screening with an irregular program. We request that you, the audience, suggest anime items for inclusion in that night’s program.
- Saturday December 16th 2023 — JAFWA doing a Bunnings Sausage Sizzle down at Cannington.
- Saturday January 13th 2024 — JAFWA’s screening resume in 2024.

The Devil is a Part-Timer season 3 (Hataraku Maou-sama)
Having been thwarted in his attempts to conquer Ente Isla, the mighty demon lord Satan escapes through a portal with his general Alsiel… And winds up in modern day Tokyo with very little magical power left. His resources for world domination now consist of a tiny rented apartment and a job at a fast food restaurant. To survive and find a way to return to Ente Isla, Satan adopts the name Sadao Maou and finds that the Hero Emilia is in similar circumstances. And now they have to look after a very special child.
This evening’s Episode: “The Devil and the Hero Witness Change in Ente Isla” season finale
The final showdown in Ente Isla begins, Demon King Satan vs the forces of Heaven, with assorted humans watching on. Meanwhile Bel and Albert save the day for falsely accused. More combatants enter the fields of battle and the reign of confusion shall be corrected. Some people will have trouble apologising enough.
Ningen Fushin – aka Apparently, Disillusioned Adventurers Will Save the World (Ningen Fushin no Boukensha-tachi ga Sekai o Sukuu You Desu)
Veteran adventurer Nick’s life is falling apart. Despite all the knowledge and expertise he’s devoted to his adventuring party, his respected leader kicked him out, his girlfriend dumped him, and his teammates shamelessly accused him of embezzlement. Tired, heartbroken, and looking for a drink, Nick chances upon a few kindred spirits who are jaded as he is. Together, these disillusioned adventurers form an unstoppable team out to save their bleak, depressing world.
This evening’s Episode: “Adventurers Can’t Save the World Yet!” season finale
After defeating Stepping Man the Survivors all enter a state of depression. Nick remembers meeting Argus who saved him from the bandit that murdered his parents. Zem takes over Nalgava’s clinic in the slums. Tianna returns to gambling but no longer enjoys it. When the Survivors meet there is uncertainty over what to do next.
Ancient Magus Bride season 2 (Mahou Tsukai no Yome)
Chise Hatori, 15 years old. Lost, without hope, and without family, she is bought for money … not by another person, but by a non-human sorcerer named Elias. Though she hesitates, she begins life anew as his apprentice and future wife. Now grown more confident in her role as a sleigh beggy, Chise was able to accept Elias and herself, if not necessarily everything about her situation. After Cartaphilus fell back into a slumber that would not last forever, Chise was able to go back to her regular life. Then she receives an invitation from a mutual aid organization for mages called the College.
Tonight’s Episode: “Conscience does make cowards of us all. II”
The chauffeur survives and is retrieved by the witch Marielle. Lucy is upset Seth has given her a million pounds but won’t explain its origin (Seth is the auctioneer who sold Chise to Elias). Dr Alexandra saves Simeon with a magic transfusion from Elias. Seth, Lucy and Chise are attacked by the non-humans, revealing their goal is to assassinate the remaining Websters.
preview – Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End (Sousou no Furiiren)
For ten years, elf mage Frieren traveled with Himmel the hero, Heiter the priest, and Eisen the dwarf warrior as they quested to destroy the demon king. At the end of their journey, Frieren set out on her own, not quite understanding how differently time flows for her versus her human companions. Reunited after fifty years only to see them wither and die, Frieren begins to ponder the nature of connections at a time when it’s already too late to say goodbye.
This evening’s Episode: “The Journey’s End”
After defeating the Demon Lord, hero Himmel, priest Heiter, dwarf warrior Eisen, and elf mage Frieren return to the royal capital. Himmel, Heiter, and Eisen are ready to settle down after their ten year adventure, but Frieren, whose lifespan lasts thousands of years, considers ten years barely noticeable and plans to travel and learn new spells. They watch the Era meteor shower together with Frieren promising to show them a better place to watch it during the next shower in fifty years.
Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury (Kidou Senshi Gandamu: Suisei no Majo)
An era when a multitude of corporations have entered space and built a huge economic system. A lone girl from the remote planet Mercury transfers to the Asticassia School of Technology, run by the Beneritt Group which dominates the mobile suit industry. Her name is Suletta Mercury. With a scarlet light burning in her pure heart, this girl walks step by step through a new world.
Tonight’s Episode: “Shall We Gundam? ”
Still worried about Elan-04, Suletta is invited to the “Incubation Party”, an annual meeting for startups held by the Benerit Group. She and Miorine attend together. During the party, Suletta meets Elan Ceres, believing him to be the Elan whom she knows. The CEOs of Peil Technologies publicly confront Suletta with proof that Aerial is a Gundam.
Jujutsu Kaisen season 2
Satoru Gojo and Suguru Geto were not always enemies. Long before they had what was supposed to be their final encounter during the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons, the pair were fellow students, rivals, and friends. In another world, they would have been the twin shining stars of Jujutsu Sorcery, but one fateful event destroyed any hope of that ever happening. Turn back the clock to witness the mission that drove them to curse one another beyond even death.
Tonight’s Episode “Evening Festival” season 2
Muta utilizes his 16 years worth of stocked up cursed energy to battle Mahito in his Ultimate Mechamaru. Mahito is able to evade and regenerate most of the damage thanks to his transfiguration, however Muta ends up releasing a missile of cursed energy that directly hits Mahito, damaging part of his soul. Several days later, on Halloween in Shibuya, a veil is thrown up over the city, trapping all the civilians within. Several are suddenly sucked into the train station, while the rest are told to ask for Satoru Gojo to be freed.
preview – Firefighter Daigo: Rescuer in Orange (Megumi no Daigo: Kyuukoku no Orange)
The story of how three young firefighters destined to save Japan grow in spirit. Daigo Toake burns with remarkable talent and unparalleled determination. Shun Onoda struggles against the walls blocking his own path. Yuki Nakamura hopes to become one of the few female members of the special rescue corps known as “Orange.” When these three young firefighters who share the goal of becoming members of Orange come together, the story of how Japan will one day be saved begins.
This evening’s Episode: “The Destined Three”
A scene of utter destruction as Tokyo burns, and exhausted firefighters brave the smoke and flames to save the fallen. How is it that Daigo and his fellow heroes came to this point? We must go back a few years, when elite trainee Shun can do no right in the gruelling training. Beaten by a girl and shown up by Daigo. But Daigo has his own weakness that he hides.
The Eminence in Shadow (Kage no Jitsuryokusha ni Naritakute!)
Even in his past life, Cid’s dream wasn’t to become a protagonist or a final boss. He’d rather lie low as a minor character until it’s prime time to reveal he’s a mastermind or at least, do the next best thing-pretend to be one. And now that he’s been reborn into another world, he’s ready to set the perfect conditions to live out his dreams to the fullest.
Tonight’s Episode: “Pretenders” and “A Fencing Tournament of Intrigue & Bloodshed”
The false Shadow Garden continues committing murders. A recovered cult relic is given by Iris to the pink-haired student, Sherry, the kingdom’s foremost researcher. Cid’s friends Po and Skel take him to a new department store, where he discovers that his subordinate Gamma opened the store to fund Shadow Garden, with branches in every city in the world; Cid is impressed but once again remains convinced that Gamma is role-playing, unaware he now owns dozens of stores and is effectively one of the wealthiest men in the world. The fake Shadow Garden under Gaunt Knight are closing in on the Acadmey and the relic.
Vinland Saga
Set in Dane-controlled England at the start of the 11th century, and features the Danish invaders of England commonly known as Vikings. The story combines a dramatisation of King Cnut the Great’s historical rise to power with a revenge plot centered on the historical explorer Thorfinn, the son of a murdered ex-warrior.
Tonight’s Episode: “Courage” season 2
After his initial victory, Canute prevents Floki and his Jomsvikings from pillaging the farm so that he can acquire it intact. With Ketil incapacitated, it falls to his nominated successor, Olmar, to decide whether to fight or surrender. Meanwhile, Thorfinn approaches Canute’s camp alone and is greeted by a towering Jomsviking named Drott the Bear Killer, who ridicules his request to talk to the king and knocks him down.
