JAFWA still operating in Winter hours for this month! Program starts at 4:15PM!

It is that dread time of year again, when daylight increases to match the length of the delightful darkness of night. The Spring Equinox is upon us, as our old enemy the Sun gains ascendancy! All praise the Librarian Kris and his Sun Disactivator for granting us legions of otaku better viewing of anime.

With “Demon Slayer” now out of the way, we have room in the program to resume screening “Jujutsu Kaisen” and “In/Spectre”.
And we also have room for a preview episode, one that reveals what goes on within Church.

Be aware that as a favour to JAFWA members, long time member Dale is doing a bulk order (in order to reduce shipping costs) of Japanese Calendars for 2024. His cutoff for taking (pre-)orders is definitely before September 30^th. While must people order anime themed calendars, he can order just about any calendar listed under here.

We are trying to fill the program for the final screening of 2023 in December. What do you want to see?

Barring a resurgence of COVID-19 pestilence, these fannish events of interest are scheduled to happen:

• Saturday October 7^th 2024 — JAFWA doing a Bunnings Sausage Sizzle down at Cannington.
• October 16^th to 22^nd 2023 — Japanese Film Festival will be screening in Perth.
• Weekend November 3^rd to 5^th 2023 — Kai-Con 2023.
• Saturday December 9^th 2023 — JAFWA’s final screening for 2023 before we take a holiday. This will be a normal length screening with an irregular program. We request that you, the audience, suggest anime items for inclusion in that night’s program.
• Saturday January 13^th 2024 — JAFWA’s screening resume in 2024.

The Devil is a Part-Timer season 3 (Hataraku Maou-sama)

Having been thwarted in his attempts to conquer Ente Isla, the mighty demon lord Satan escapes through a portal with his general Alsiel… And winds up in modern day Tokyo with very little magical power left. His resources for world domination now consist of a tiny rented apartment and a job at a fast food restaurant. To survive and find a way to return to Ente Isla, Satan adopts the name Sadao Maou and finds that the Hero Emilia is in similar circumstances. And now they have to look after a very special child.

This evening’s Episode: “The Devil Vomits”

The Hero Emi has a series of flashing dreams featuring everyone in her close circle from Earth that ends with Mao killing her. Meanwhile Mao, Suzuno and Alla are attempting to camp out in Ente Isla, and learn more about each other. The corrupt Olbia’s plan to make the Hero Emi overthrow the Demon King (portrayed by the captured Alsiel) is proceeding. But pawns are beginning to make their own moves. But there is one big anomaly.

Ningen Fushin – aka Apparently, Disillusioned Adventurers Will Save the World (Ningen Fushin no Boukensha-tachi ga Sekai o Sukuu You Desu)

Veteran adventurer Nick’s life is falling apart. Despite all the knowledge and expertise he’s devoted to his adventuring party, his respected leader kicked him out, his girlfriend dumped him, and his teammates shamelessly accused him of embezzlement. Tired, heartbroken, and looking for a drink, Nick chances upon a few kindred spirits who are jaded as he is. Together, these disillusioned adventurers form an unstoppable team out to save their bleak, depressing world.

This evening’s Episode: “The Legend of the Labyrinth City – Stepping Man?!”

Thanks to the adventurer/amateur journalist, Olivia Taylor, Kizuna becomes obsessed with Stepping Man, a monster that can leap over rooftops and kidnaps children. Later Zem, Kizuna and Nick stop Stepping Man kidnapping a girl named Reina. A mercenary gets angry at adventurers for taking mercenary work. Zem, as a healer, is disturbed by the living conditions of many people who are sick, drug addicted and dying in the slums.

Ancient Magus Bride season 2 (Mahou Tsukai no Yome)

Chise Hatori, 15 years old. Lost, without hope, and without family, she is bought for money … not by another person, but by a non-human sorcerer named Elias. Though she hesitates, she begins life anew as his apprentice and future wife. Now grown more confident in her role as a sleigh beggy, Chise was able to accept Elias and herself, if not necessarily everything about her situation. After Cartaphilus fell back into a slumber that would not last forever, Chise was able to go back to her regular life. Then she receives an invitation from a mutual aid organization for mages called the College.

Tonight’s Episode: “Slow and sure. ”

Rian recalls his childhood playing happily with Philomena. During PE Elias watches Chise happy with her friends and is momentarily jealous. Adolf sadly recalls his original home in Dresden, Germany, which he hasn’t visited since it was destroyed during World War II, reminding Elias just because Chise is happy where she is doesn’t mean she won’t ever return home. Veronica encourages Philomena to make friends with Chise but she is suspicious of Veronica’s motive.

preview – Saint Cecilia and Pastor Lawrence (Shiro Seijo to Kuro Bokushi)

Saint Cecilia is beloved by the townspeople—not only is she elegant and composed, she benevolently shares her wisdom with all who seek it. That is, until the last person has left—at which point she becomes totally hopeless. Only Pastor Lawrence, is keeping the Saint put together enough to do her duties…and though she may test him, it’s all in a day’s work

This evening’s Episode: “The Relationship Between Them”

Saints protect people, and the Church protects the Saints, a lesson that Lawrence learned long ago. And now grown up and over-protective Pastor Lawrence now looks after a lady Saint. And she is more trouble than he anticipated. For some reason Saint Cecilia behaves differently when only Lawrence is about. The topic of weddings arises.

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury (Kidou Senshi Gandamu: Suisei no Majo)

An era when a multitude of corporations have entered space and built a huge economic system. A lone girl from the remote planet Mercury transfers to the Asticassia School of Technology, run by the Beneritt Group which dominates the mobile suit industry. Her name is Suletta Mercury. With a scarlet light burning in her pure heart, this girl walks step by step through a new world.

Tonight’s Episode: “Unseen Trap ”

Everybody is shocked by Guel’s proposal, including Suletta who rejects him. On the next day, however, Guel denies holding any attraction to Suletta. Later, Suletta attempts a mobile suit exam but instantly fails due to her lacking a House to support her. Another student, Earth House member Chuatury “ChuChu” Panlunch also attempts it but fails as well due to bullies.

Jujutsu Kaisen season 2

Satoru Gojo and Suguru Geto were not always enemies. Long before they had what was supposed to be their final encounter during the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons, the pair were fellow students, rivals, and friends. In another world, they would have been the twin shining stars of Jujutsu Sorcery, but one fateful event destroyed any hope of that ever happening. Turn back the clock to witness the mission that drove them to curse one another beyond even death.

Tonight’s Episode “Hidden Inventory 4” season 2

Geto uses his cursed spirits to fight Toji in revenge for Riko, as well as Gojo and Kuroi’s assumed deaths, but Toji is able to dodge and counteract each attack. He also explains the process behind how he was able to hide his own cursed spirit and infiltrate into the lair. Geto attempts to absorb Toji’s cursed spirit, but fails, allowing Toji to defeat him.

In/Spectre season 2 (Kyokou Suiri)

When she was still just a girl, Kotoko was kidnapped by yokai. These spirits made her into a powerful intermediary between the spirit and human worlds, but this power came at a price: an eye and a leg. Now, years later, she watches out for dangerous yokai while developing feelings for a young man named Kuro, who is also special: an incident with a yokai has given him healing powers. He’s surprised when Kotoko asks him to team up to handle renegade yokai, preserving the thin line between reality and the supernatural.

This evening’s Episodes: “Or You Could Wish Upon a Star”

Kotoko finds the story of the walking doll somewhat unusual. She may be facing a cosmic supernatural mystery. But it should be easy enough to destroy, though the motivations of this cursed doll seem to remain unknown, unless you look at Zenta-san’s revenge from another angle.

retro item – City Hunter

Ryo Saeba is a “sweeper” who is always found chasing beautiful girls and a private detective who works to rid Tokyo of crime, along with his associate or partner, Hideyuki Makimura. Their “City Hunter” business is an underground jack-of-all-trades operation, contacted by writing the letters “XYZ” on a blackboard at Shinjuku Station.

Tonight’s episode: “Goodbye Makimura: A Tearful Birthday on a Rainy Night ”

On Kaori’s birthday, a drug cartel sends a hitman, the General, to erase Hideyuki Makimura. His younger sister Kaori becomes Ryou’s partner.

The Eminence in Shadow (Kage no Jitsuryokusha ni Naritakute!)

Even in his past life, Cid’s dream wasn’t to become a protagonist or a final boss. He’d rather lie low as a minor character until it’s prime time to reveal he’s a mastermind or at least, do the next best thing-pretend to be one. And now that he’s been reborn into another world, he’s ready to set the perfect conditions to live out his dreams to the fullest.

Tonight’s Episode: “Fencer Ordinaire”

The Shadow Seven split up to hunt the cult all over the world; Cid believes they simply grew up and tired of role-playing with him. He enrolls Midgar Academy as Claire did, where he deliberately avoids standing out. As a forfeit for doing badly on a test, Cid is forced to publicly humiliate himself by offering a fake love confession to the much higher-class Alexia, a princess of Midgar, unfortunately she accepts.

Vinland Saga

Set in Dane-controlled England at the start of the 11th century, and features the Danish invaders of England commonly known as Vikings. The story combines a dramatisation of King Cnut the Great’s historical rise to power with a revenge plot centered on the historical explorer Thorfinn, the son of a murdered ex-warrior.

Tonight’s Episode: “The First Measure” / “The First Method” season 2

Canute sails towards Ketil’s farm to requisition it, hopefully without bloodshed. Leif arrives at the farm with Thorgil, Olmar, and Ketil, the latter two still shaken by the events in Jelling. Thorgil starts readying the men at the farm for the impending battle with Canute. While Thorfinn and Einar await their punishment, Thorfinn contemplates an alternative to violence for resolving conflicts.
