JAFWA operating in Winter hours! Program starts at 4:15PM!

We continue with the month of May, starting before the sun fully departs the sky. Occasionally with water falling from the sky. come now to JAFWA to bask in the warmth of anime. Don’t forget to leave Tokyo Alley 11 – Marine early enough.

This week we continue our programs of regular series of anime goodness. There will be a couple of items squeezed out till next time, in order for us to preview two other anime shows. Our first preview anime shows how to avoid the worst of an alien invasion, the second shows the problems of dealing with a yakuza incursion, and an alternate use for a rice cooker.

And then in July it will be time for the AGM and JAFWA elections. Isn’t it time you stepped up and participated?

It may be of interest to our members, but Luna Leederville cinemas has introduced Monday Double Features, which includes a couple of Mondays with anime. (Monday April 17 was “Howl’s Moving Castle” and “Princess Mononoke”, June 12 is “Akira” and “Demon Slayer: Mugen Train”)

Do It Yourself (Yofukashi no Uta)

Serufu Yua (pronounced “yourself”) is a laid back first year high-school student, very accident-prone and is known for having a perfect attendance record at the nurse’s office. She fails to get into Yuyu Girls’ Vocational High School for technology with her best friend Miku Suride, instead getting into the lower class Gatagata Girls’ High School. But there is a student club that may catch her attention.

This evening’s Episodes: “‘DIY’ Mean a Shocking Surprise? How Unexpected! It’s Really Unexpected!”

After several days of preparing for the DIY Club and Miku to visit her house, Serufu reveals she is building a house for her pet pig Meat to prove herself useful to the others, who decide to make things for her other pets. As Serufu starts to struggle on her own, the others remind her that they’re a team, highlighting that Serufu shines when it comes to creative ideas, and help her to complete the house.

Bocchi the Rock

Extremely anxious and socially awkward Hitori Gotou longs to become a rock musician in spite of her struggles, whilst fulfilling her desires to one day make friends. She is even given a chance to do so after she is taken in by Nijika Ijichi to become a member of the newly formed Kessoku Band.

This evening’s Episode: “Bocchi the Rock”

Despite the typhoon cutting down the expected attendance rate, Kessoku Band moves forward with their concert. Seeing the smaller crowd and hearing their less-than-excited comments on the show, the band members, save for Bocchi, take a huge hit to their morale and make several mistakes in their opening number not present during their audition.

Liza Luna has been dispatched to Earth by the space empire Azatos. At first, she thought that it would be fine to destroy the Earth, since it has a low level of civilization. However, after stopping at a café, she encounters a cat and is shocked by her cuteness.

This evening’s Episode: “Impossible”

It is a simple mission for alien researcher Liza Luna – is there anything on Earth that would justify preserving humanity and the rest of life on Earth, or simply exterminate all life and strip mine the planet for water and resources. But then she finds a cat cafe, and learns about adorable pets. Can she resist the impossible cuteness overload, and can she convince the other aliens from destroying the Earth, without revealing the treasure she has found?

retro item – Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki second series

Tenchi Masaki was a normal 17-year-old boy until the day he accidentally releases the space pirate, Ryoko, from a cave she was sealed in 700 years ago as the people thought she was a demon. In a series of events, four other alien girls show up at the Masaki household as Tenchi learns much of his heritage he never knew about and deal with five alien girls who each have some sort of romantic interest in him.

Tonight’s episode: “Sasami and Tsunami ”

Tenchi and family return to the local hot springs resort in need of a holiday, but end up having to repair the place first, since they destroyed it earlier. While working at the inn, the others see a ghostly figure in white. Meanwhile, Sasami is acting oddly, and she has a secret about her past to reveal.

Kaina of Great Snow Sea (Ooyuki umi no Kaina )

In a world where land is being swallowed by the encroaching Great Snow Sea, humanity ekes out a harsh life above the Tenmaku that stretches from the roots to the tops of giant Orbital Trees. The story centers around Kaina, a boy who lives above the Tenmaku, and Liliha, the princess of the small country Atland in the Great Snow Sea.

Tonight’s Episodes: “Ririha in a Cage”

The Admiral has Ririha caged on the mast of his flagship, intending to force Atland to watch her freeze to death to break their morale. Kaina and Yaona are able to sneak aboard the flagship and manage to quietly free Ririha.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Die Neue These (Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu Die Neue These Kaikou) second season

In humanity’s distant future, two interstellar states – the monarchic Galactic Empire and the democratic Free Planets Alliance – are embroiled in a never-ending war. The story focuses on the exploits of rivals Reinhard von Lohengramm and Yang Wen-li as they rise to power and fame in the Galactic Empire and the Free Planets Alliance respectively.

Tonight’s Episode: “Farewell Days of Old”

Lonegramm’s victory celebrations at Geiersburg Fortress are marred by the traitor’s last revenge, and Kircheis will no longer follow his friend anymore. Is the new order doomed to fall as well, or does the devious Oberstein have a dastardly plan to shake the Galactic Empire?

Jujutsu Kaisen

Negative human emotions – regret, bitterness, shame – are the source of all curses that infest the world and hide in everyday life, leading to death in the worst cases. Yuji Itadori, a particularly strong young man, attempts to save a friend from a curse, only to wind up consuming the special grade curse of Ryoumen Sukuna’s finger. Only a curse can eliminate another curse, and Yuji’s career as a cursed person who must exorcise curses has now begin.

Tonight’s Episode “Kyoto Sister School Exchange Event – Group Battle 2 –”

Yuji receives lessons from Todo about using cursed energy while the two fight each other. Nobara is knocked out by a non-lethal sniper shot from Mechamaru. Panda begins fighting him, and his past and technique is revealed.

A normal salaryman, Tetsuo Tosu, discovers that his adult daughter Reika is being physically and emotionally abused by her new boyfriend, a young man named Nobuto. After killing Nobuto in self-defence, he and his wife dispose of the body in a “perfect crime”. However, Nobuto was the only son of a powerful yakuza leader, and he will stop at nothing to find out what happened to his son.

This evening’s Episode: “From Today, I Am a Killer”

Tetsuo Tosu meets his daughter Reika for lunch and discovers that her boyfriend Nobuto is physically abusing her. Checking out his daughter’s apartment for clues, Nobuto arrives so Tetsuo hides in a closet where he hears Nobuto talking over the phone about killing other people and how he plans to get money out of Reika before getting rid of her. About to be discovered, Tetsuo bursts from closet and beats Nobuto to death with a rice cooker.

Tokyo Revengers

Watching the news, Takemichi Hanagaki learns that his girlfriend from way back in middle school, Hinata Tachibana, has died. The only girlfriend he ever had was just killed by a villainous group known as the Tokyo Manji Gang. He lives in a crappy apartment with thin walls, and his younger boss treats him like an idiot. At the height of his rock-bottom life, he suddenly time-leaps twelve years back to his middle school days. To save Hinata, and change the life he spent running away, hopeless part-timer Takemichi must aim for the top of Kanto’s most sinister delinquent gang.

Tonight’s Episode: “Dead or Alive”

Mikey collapses from exhaustion, but before the other Valhalla members attack, Kisaki intervenes with his division. He gains the approval of the other Tokyo Manji Gang members, except for Takemichi, who realizes this action had been planned. Baji, however, targets Kisaki

Vinland Saga

Set in Dane-controlled England at the start of the 11th century, and features the Danish invaders of England commonly known as Vikings. The story combines a dramatisation of King Cnut the Great’s historical rise to power with a revenge plot centered on the historical explorer Thorfinn, the son of a murdered ex-warrior.

Tonight’s Episode: “Awakening” season 2

After Snake reprimands his men for mistreating the slaves, he introduces himself to Thorfinn. He suddenly draws his sword, but this time Thorfinn reacts and blocks Snake with a powerful kick, revealing that he still has a will to live. When Einar asks if he has been to war, Thorfinn replies he has been at war since he was a child, and killed more people than he can remember.
