I don’t know what made me happier last week at JAFWA – all the new people who found us as a source to satisfy their craving foranime, or the joy of having gone to the cinemas to embrace Makoto Shinkai’s new anime movie “Suzume“.
JAFWA is currently still operating on normal, Summer hours. But as a certain franchise would have us know “Winter is Coming”, and starting in May JAFWA will begin operating one hour earlier. This has been your temporal dislocation early warning.

We have exceptional high school students being de-petrified thousands of years in the future into a new Stone Age, and have managed to climb the technological ladder so that they now have a hot air balloon and a sailing ship, in the 3rd season of “Dr Stone”.
Meanwhile the hunt for stolen gold continues as our surviving veterans of the Russo-Japanese war return to the land of the Ainu in the 4th season of “Golden Kamuy”.
And we continue the adventures of impulsive Thorfinn after he left Iceland in one of the last excursions of the Vikings, became enslaved and acquired his freedom after becoming a knife wielding assassin, set in the poorly documented English history 3 generations before the Battle of Hasting, in the 2nd season of “Vinland Saga”.

All this and we preview another anime fresh from Japan.

It may be of interest to our members, but Luna Leederville cinemas has introduced Monday Double Features, which includes a couple of Mondays with anime. (Monday April 17 was “Howl’s Moving Castle” and “Princess Mononoke”, June 12 is “Akira” and “Demon Slayer: Mugen Train”)

The next fundraising for JAFWA at Cannington Bunnings sausage sizzle is scheduled for Saturday May 6^th, and we would appreciate a volunteer or 3 as spares to help out, in case any of our current volunteers need to withdraw.

Do It Yourself (Yofukashi no Uta)

Serufu Yua (pronounced “yourself”) is a laid back first year high-school student, very accident-prone and is known for having a perfect attendance record at the nurse’s office. She fails to get into Yuyu Girls’ Vocational High School for technology with her best friend Miku Suride, instead getting into the lower class Gatagata Girls’ High School. But there is a student club that may catch her attention.

This evening’s Episodes: “‘DIY’ Means Dull, Unexciting Items Come in Handy!”

The DIY Club, accompanied by Miku, go to the beach to gather materials—such as driftwood and shells—for accessories they can sell to raise funds for their treehouse. After finding everything they need, the girls spend the rest of the day playing at the beach and swimming.

Dr Stone season 3 “New World”

Modern society is lost when a mysterious light leaves everyone petrified in stone. Thousands of years in the future, super genius Senku awakens and begins restoring civilisation with his Kingdom of Science. With the Stone Wars over, the former members of Tsukasa’s Empire of Might join forces with the Kingdom of Science to build a ship capable of sailing across open ocean to seek answers on the mystery of the global petrification. However, before they can begin their voyage Senku and his friends need to find some key resources and push some new scientific advancements to build the type of vessel they need.

This evening’s Episode: “New World Map ”

Returning from their balloon flight Senku reveals to Ryusui his plan to construct an oil powered ship to reach the source of the petrification ray, South America. Before that they must successfully locate the still existing Sagara Oil Field. Other preparations are needed.

Skip and Loafer

15 year old Mitsumi Iwakura moves to Tokyo to attend a prestigious school and achieve her dreams of making positive change in the world. But while she’s got book smarts, she soon finds herself inexperienced in big city social norms, and struggles to make friends at first.

This evening’s Episode: “Sparkling-Fresh”

Having arrived in Tokyo, Mitsumi heads to her first day at school, full of confidence. But there are a few things about a large metropolis that a small town girl may not be used to. It seems she is going to miss her Entrance Ceremony, but fortunately a fellow class-mate, the overly relaxed Sousuke Shima-kun is there to give her some guidance. Will her plans for the future be derailed on the first day? First impressions are everything.

retro item – Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki

Tenchi Masaki was a normal 17-year-old boy until the day he accidentally releases the space pirate, Ryoko, from a cave she was sealed in 700 years ago as the people thought she was a demon. In a series of events, four other alien girls show up at the Masaki household as Tenchi learns much of his heritage he never knew about and deal with five alien girls who each have some sort of romantic interest in him.

Tonight’s movie: “We Need Tenchi ”

The girls head for Kagato’s ship to avenge Tenchi. Meanwhile, on Earth, Sasami senses Tenchi is in trouble and summons Tsunami, her own Juraian battleship, to save him from near-death. Mihoshi accidentally releases a 20,000-year-old scientific genius, Washu, from Kagato’s imprisonment, who turns out to be Ryoko’s (and Ryo-Ohki’s) true creator, and Tenchi returns to face Kagato in a battle to the death.

Kaina of Great Snow Sea (Ooyuki umi no Kaina )

In a world where land is being swallowed by the encroaching Great Snow Sea, humanity ekes out a harsh life above the Tenmaku that stretches from the roots to the tops of giant Orbital Trees. The story centers around Kaina, a boy who lives above the Tenmaku, and Liliha, the princess of the small country Atland in the Great Snow Sea.

Tonight’s Episodes: “Traveling Down the Orbital Tree” and “Conflict at the Snow Sea”

Kaina and Ririha continue their descent down the Snow Sea as forces from both Valghia and Atland search for Ririha. Kaina and Ririha exchange histories and stories on their long descent. Ririha also reveals that she was informed about the existence of the Canopy thanks to Light, a strange, otherworldly entity that Kaina had also seen occasionally. After several days, the pair finally reach the bottom of the tree only to be met by a Valghian patrol. The Valghians are able to capture them before the Atlandian cavalry led by Orinoga can reach only Kaina. In Atland, Kaina develops a plan to rescue Rirha, with the aid of her younger brother.

Jujutsu Kaisen

Negative human emotions – regret, bitterness, shame – are the source of all curses that infest the world and hide in everyday life, leading to death in the worst cases. Yuji Itadori, a particularly strong young man, attempts to save a friend from a curse, only to wind up consuming the special grade curse of Ryoumen Sukuna’s finger. Only a curse can eliminate another curse, and Yuji’s career as a cursed person who must exorcise curses has now begin.

Tonight’s Episode “Tomorrow”

Nanami and Yuji catch Mahito’s weak points and batter him. Mahito, at the brink of defeat, releases his Domain Expansion and traps Nanami inside. Believing that he is about to die, Nanami reflects on what led him to rejoin Jujutsu Tech as a sorcerer. Then Yuji breaks through the domain, as it is weaker on the outside than the inside.

Tokyo Revengers

Watching the news, Takemichi Hanagaki learns that his girlfriend from way back in middle school, Hinata Tachibana, has died. The only girlfriend he ever had was just killed by a villainous group known as the Tokyo Manji Gang. He lives in a crappy apartment with thin walls, and his younger boss treats him like an idiot. At the height of his rock-bottom life, he suddenly time-leaps twelve years back to his middle school days. To save Hinata, and change the life he spent running away, hopeless part-timer Takemichi must aim for the top of Kanto’s most sinister delinquent gang.

Tonight’s Episode: “No way”

On behalf of Valhalla, Hanma challenges the Tokyo Manji Gang to a fight. The next day, Takemichi meets Chifuyu, who tells him that Baji joined Valhalla to expose Kisaki. The two meet with Osanai, and together, they suspect that Kisaki is the true leader of Valhalla. Takemichi returns to the present and has Naoto take him to meet Draken in prison on to confirm this.

Golden Kamuy

Saichi Sugimoto, a survivor of the battle of 203 Hill in the Russo-Japanese War has become a miner in Hokkaido in order to provide for the widow of his dead comrade, Toraji. He hears a dubious story of hidden Ainu gold stashed by a criminal group, and accidentally finds clues to its location. He decides to search for the gold along with an Ainu girl, Asirpa, who rescues him from Hokkaido’s harsh northern wilderness. Though other parties are also hunting for the gold.

Tonight’s Episode: “Rushin’ Outta Russia” season 4

Sugimoto’s party leave the Nivkh village in Russia on dog sleds, crossing back into Japanese territory. Sugimoto sends a telegram to Lt.Tsurumi announcing that they are heading towards Toyohara, when Shiraishi is shot in the leg by a sniper. Meanwhile , the former Head Jailer Kadokura and Kirawus, search for Ushiyama and Hijikata. A silkworm coccoon announces that the tattooed escapee Sekiya Waichiro is around, using his knowledge of toxins.

Vinland Saga

Set in Dane-controlled England at the start of the 11th century, and features the Danish invaders of England commonly known as Vikings. The story combines a dramatisation of King Cnut the Great’s historical rise to power with a revenge plot centered on the historical explorer Thorfinn, the son of a murdered ex-warrior.

Tonight’s Episode: “Slave” season 2

Vikings attack a village in Northern England where Einar, his mother and sister Lotta live a peaceful farming life. Einar is taken to Denmark along with other prisoners to be sold as slaves. He is bought by Ketil, a major landowner, to work on his large farm in southern Denmark; there, Einar meets another of Ketil’s slaves: a young man named Thorfinn.
