Hopefully we have all survived last week’s chocolate overdose and will be attending JAFWA craving anime, even if you have to leave SwanCon 2023 early. And some of us have gone to the cinemas to embrace Makoto Shinkai’s new anime movie “Suzume“.
JAFWA is currently still operating on normal, Summer hours. But as a certain franchise would have us know “Winter is Coming”, and in May JAFWA will begin operating one hour earlier. This has been your temporal dislocation early warning.

This week we continue our regular series of anime goodness, though we farewell “Spy x Family” (while eagerly awaiting season 2) and farewell “Summertime Render”. All this and we preview another anime fresh from Japan.

It may be of interest to our members, but Luna Leederville cinemas has introduced Monday Double Features, which includes a couple of Mondays with anime. (Monday April 17 is “Howl’s Moving Castle” and “Princess Mononoke”, June 12 is “Akira” and “Demon Slayer: Mugen Train”)

The next fundraising for JAFWA at Cannington Bunnings sausage sizzle is scheduled for Saturday May 6^th, and we would appreciate a volunteer or 3 to help out.

Do It Yourself (Yofukashi no Uta)

Serufu Yua (pronounced “yourself”) is a laid back first year high-school student, very accident-prone and is known for having a perfect attendance record at the nurse’s office. She fails to get into Yuyu Girls’ Vocational High School for technology with her best friend Miku Suride, instead getting into the lower class Gatagata Girls’ High School. But there is a student club that may catch her attention.

This evening’s Episodes: “‘DIY’ Means Finding a Place to Belong… Finally”

While initially reluctant to let Kokoro of YuuVoc join, Rei comes to respect her strength through an arm-wrestling match, while Haruko-sensei, who knows Kokoro from childhood, gives her permission to become an outside club member and help build the treehouse.

Bocchi the Rock

Extremely anxious and socially awkward Hitori Gotou longs to become a rock musician in spite of her struggles, whilst fulfilling her desires to one day make friends. She is even given a chance to do so after she is taken in by Nijika Ijichi to become a member of the newly formed Kessoku Band.

This evening’s Episode: “Flightless Fish”

Nijika is shocked to find that her sister Seika, the club manager, will not let them back on stage for the club’s next live show without auditioning first. The band decides to focus on practicing their new original song over the next week.

Spy x Family part 2

In order to ensure World Peace, a master spy who has to “build a family” to execute a mission, not realising that the girl he adopts as his daughter is a telepath, and the woman he agrees to be in a marriage with is a skilled assassin.

This evening’s Episode: “First Contact ” finale

Loid infiltrates Eden Academy on the day of Imperial Scholar social gathering where Donovan Desmond is attending and gets to know that Damian is going to meet his father after the gathering. He uses the chance to make contact with Donovan and to probe him for intel.

retro item – Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki

Tenchi Masaki was a normal 17-year-old boy until the day he accidentally releases the space pirate, Ryoko, from a cave she was sealed in 700 years ago as the people thought she was a demon. In a series of events, four other alien girls show up at the Masaki household as Tenchi learns much of his heritage he never knew about and deal with five alien girls who each have some sort of romantic interest in him.

Tonight’s movie: “Kagato Attacks! ”

The murderous space criminal Kagato arrives on earth and seizes Ryoko, saying that he is her creator. By watching Tenchi’s grandfather fight Kagato, Ayeka realizes that Tenchi’s grandfather is her brother Yosho.

Kaina of Great Snow Sea (Ooyuki umi no Kaina )

In a world where land is being swallowed by the encroaching Great Snow Sea, humanity ekes out a harsh life above the Tenmaku that stretches from the roots to the tops of giant Orbital Trees. The story centers around Kaina, a boy who lives above the Tenmaku, and Liliha, the princess of the small country Atland in the Great Snow Sea.

Tonight’s Episode: “Princess of the Snow Sea”

Kaina takes Ririha back to his villages where she explains her situation. Her country of Atland is like many others on the Snow Sea, situated at the base of Orbital Spire Trees since those are the only locations with solid ground to settle on and collect water.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Die Neue These (Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu Die Neue These Kaikou) second season

In humanity’s distant future, two interstellar states – the monarchic Galactic Empire and the democratic Free Planets Alliance – are embroiled in a never-ending war. The story focuses on the exploits of rivals Reinhard von Lohengramm and Yang Wen-li as they rise to power and fame in the Galactic Empire and the Free Planets Alliance respectively.

Tonight’s Episode: “Victory for Whose Sake?”

The capital planet Heinessen’s defense system “Artemis’ Necklace” is now the only thing preventing Yang Wen-li from defeating the coup d’etat. But Yang Wen-li has the cold hard truth on his side. The National Salvation Military Council revolution has failed. The Dominion of Fezzan starts to asset itself.

Jujutsu Kaisen

Negative human emotions – regret, bitterness, shame – are the source of all curses that infest the world and hide in everyday life, leading to death in the worst cases. Yuji Itadori, a particularly strong young man, attempts to save a friend from a curse, only to wind up consuming the special grade curse of Ryoumen Sukuna’s finger. Only a curse can eliminate another curse, and Yuji’s career as a cursed person who must exorcise curses has now begin.

Tonight’s Episode “To You, Someday”

Feeling that humans don’t have hearts due to all he has been through, Junpei fights Yuji using his cursed energy technique, a shikigami that poisons whoever it touches. Yuji tries to convince Junpei to come to Jujutsu High with him. Mahito arrives and Junpei realizes he was being manipulated by him.

Raizo Kurima is a man who was betrayed by someone he trusted, and now he has no place to return. He is now a hitman working for the organization Revenger, which takes revenge on behalf of those who have no power. The five men of “Ribenjiya” start to build a strange friendship by working together.

Tonight’s Episode: “Once Upon a Time in Nagasaki”

A samurai named Hirata is murdered by another samurai named Kurima. Before dying Hirata places a gold charm in his mouth which is retrieved by an unknown person. Kurima is approached by Usui Yuen who wishes to hire him to perform odd jobs.

Tokyo Revengers

Watching the news, Takemichi Hanagaki learns that his girlfriend from way back in middle school, Hinata Tachibana, has died. The only girlfriend he ever had was just killed by a villainous group known as the Tokyo Manji Gang. He lives in a crappy apartment with thin walls, and his younger boss treats him like an idiot. At the height of his rock-bottom life, he suddenly time-leaps twelve years back to his middle school days. To save Hinata, and change the life he spent running away, hopeless part-timer Takemichi must aim for the top of Kanto’s most sinister delinquent gang.

Tonight’s Episode: “Once upon a time”

In 2003, the Tokyo Manji Gang are founded by Mikey, Draken, Mitsuya, Pah-chin, Baji, and Kazutora. Kazutora convinces Baji to help him steal a motorbike for Mikey’s birthday. During their heist, Baji realises too late that the shop is owned by Mikey’s older brother.

Summer Time Rendering

Upon hearing of Ushio’s death, Shinpei returns to his hometown of Wakayama City on Hitogashima and reunites with his childhood friend’s family. The funeral goes smoothly, but under the surface something strange is brewing on the island.

Tonight’s Episode: “I’m Home” finale

Shinpei awakes on the boat with Hizuru, blurting out her real identity, no longer knowing where he learned it. Mio, Tokiko and Sou greet him on the pier, where he realizes he came back, because Ushio called him a day before. As they begin walking home, they run into Ushio and Nezu, and life goes on without Shadows, none the wiser.
