Can you believe it!?! A whole month of JAFWA has come to pass it 2023.
But you know what that means – Our monthly Member’s Prize Draw, along with our member survey to see what you like in the program, and what you don’t. (Don’t rank the regular program items too low)

To help add spice to the monthly survey, this week we have another preview item to tempt you away from our regular program – a slice of life story of high-school, isolation and rock-and-roll. We will screen this before the Dinner Break, which means we will have to double-up one of our other regular series, say “Jujutsu Kaisen”.
There are so many anime titles coming out each season, we would welcome any good suggestions as to what else JAFWA can preview.

We are also thinking of having a retro-anime timeslot, but which generation(s)-old show should we go with. We may put on a bean poll soon to find out, but first, do you have any suggestions?

Currently at assorted cinemas is the “That Time I was Re-incarnated as a Slime” movie “Scarlet Bond”. Be aware that some screenings will be dubbed into English, others properly subbed, so plan appropriately.

The Devil Is a Part-Timer! (Hataraku Maou-sama!) season 2

Having been thwarted in his attempts to conquer Ente Isla, the mighty demon lord Satan escapes through a portal with his general Alciel… And winds up in modern day Tokyo with very little magical power left. His resources for world domination now consist of a tiny rented apartment and a job at a fast food restaurant. To survive and find a way to return to Ente Isla, Satan adopts the name Sadao Maou and finds that the Hero Emilia is in similar circumstances.

This evening’s Episode: “The Devil and the Hero Rise Up to Defend the Sasakis”

Maou and Emi prepare to distract the bear to let the others escape, however an incoming SUV spooks the bear into charging, forcing Emi to use her strength to take it down. The news quickly spreads around town about the “bear-slayer”, incredibly embarrassing Emi and forcing her to hide inside. After Maou and Alciel return from working the fields, they learn from the neighbours that there have been frequent attacks on the nearby farms by thieves stealing the livestock.

Ascendance of a Bookworm (Honzuki no Gekokujou) season 3

The story follows Motosu Urano, a book-loving post-secondary student and soon-to-be librarian who ends up crushed to death beneath a pile of books during an earthquake. With her dying breath, she wishes to be reincarnated in a world where she can read books forever. Urano awakens in the body of a weak, five-year-old girl named Myne in a world where books are scarce and only available to elites. Myne, retaining her memories from her previous life, decides to create and print her own books so that she can read again.

This evening’s Episode: “Delia and Dirk”

Orphan baby Dirk is feverish and spotty, so what can “older sister” Delia do? But the condition Devouring Dirk is more familiar to Myne, but she doesn’t like the solution. Still there is the issue of coloured inks. While Delia deals with her issues at the orphanage.

Extremely anxious and socially awkward Hitori Gotou longs to become a rock musician in spite of her struggles, whilst fulfilling her desires to one day make friends. She is even given a chance to do so after she is taken in by Nijika Ijichi to become a member of the newly formed Kessoku Band.

This evening’s Episode: “Lonely Rolling Bocchi ”

Hitori Gotou is an extremely introverted girl who has trouble making friends or working in groups at school. When she sees a rock band being interviewed on TV, she decides to start playing guitar, thinking it will make her more friends. Unfortunately, her social anxiety keeps her from making friends throughout middle school, but she finds some modest success playing covers of popular songs and posting them online under the alias “guitarhero”. After struggling to be sociable during her first year of highschool, a girl named Nijika Ijichi begs her to replace a guitarist who left the group before the band plays their show.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Die Neue These (Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu Die Neue These Kaikou) second season

In humanity’s distant future, two interstellar states – the monarchic Galactic Empire and the democratic Free Planets Alliance – are embroiled in a never-ending war. The story focuses on the exploits of rivals Reinhard von Lohengramm and Yang Wen-li as they rise to power and fame in the Galactic Empire and the Free Planets Alliance respectively.

Tonight’s Episode: “Before the Storm”

The Iserlohn Corridor is a safe passage through non-navigable space between the Galactic Empire and the Free Planets Alliance, and Yang Wen-li commands the fortress that defends it. And now an envoy from the Galactic Empire comes to arrange a prisoner swap, which is part of the plotting of Lohengramm, but can Yang defend against it? The Earth Cult is starting to be noticed.

Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun (Made in Abyss: Retsujitsu no Ougonkyou) season 2

An orphan girl named Riko who lives in the town of Osu on an island in the sea of Beoluska. The city surrounds a strange, giant hole going deep into the earth, which is commonly called the Abyss. The Abyss harbours artefacts and remnants of a civilisation long gone, and is therefore the popular hunting spot for so-called Cave Raiders, who undertake arduous and dangerous descends into the mist-filled pit to recover whatever relics they can find. However, the deeper one goes into the Abyss, the more one is afflicted by a progressively fatal malady called the Curse of the Abyss; few who have descended into the lower regions have returned to tell of their experiences.

Tonight’s Episode: “All That You Gather”

Nanachi wakes up, having been given Belaf’s memories of Faputa. Belaf explains he took in Nanachi to pass on his memories, and releases both Nanachi and Mitty from his service. However, with the village barrier breached, the Curse has entered the village, destroying any villager that touches it.

Jujutsu Kaisen

Negative human emotions – regret, bitterness, shame – are the source of all curses that infest the world and hide in everyday life, leading to death in the worst cases. Yuji Itadori, a particularly strong young man, attempts to save a friend from a curse, only to wind up consuming the special grade curse of Ryoumen Sukuna’s finger. Only a curse can eliminate another curse, and Yuji’s career as a cursed person who must exorcise curses has now begin.

Tonight’s Episodes: “Girl of Steel” and “Curse Womb Must Die”

Yuji, Megumi and Satoru pick up the third first-year student Nobara Kugisaki. Satoru brings them to an abandoned building that is occupied by Curses as a field test for Nobara. Nobara discovers a Curse holding a little boy hostage, and surrenders in an attempt to save him. Yuji rescues her and she finishes off the Curse.
A month later, the three student sorcerers are dispatched to exorcise a Cursed Womb at a detention center, leaving one of them dead. Kiyotaka Ijichi, the assistant director at Jujutsu High, puts up a veil over the building to conceal them from the ordinary citizens. The trio sees that the prison has changed into an infinite, chaotic wasteland and that the inmates have been brutally murdered. Yuji’s hand is torn off by the cursed spirit so he decides to unleash Sukuna once Megumi rescues Nobara.

Tokyo Revengers

Watching the news, Takemichi Hanagaki learns that his girlfriend from way back in middle school, Hinata Tachibana, has died. The only girlfriend he ever had was just killed by a villainous group known as the Tokyo Manji Gang. He lives in a crappy apartment with thin walls, and his younger boss treats him like an idiot. At the height of his rock-bottom life, he suddenly time-leaps twelve years back to his middle school days. To save Hinata, and change the life he spent running away, hopeless part-timer Takemichi must aim for the top of Kanto’s most sinister delinquent gang.

Tonight’s Episode: “Revolt”

Takemichi goes to the parking lot, where Draken is expected to die, but finds him fighting Moebius. Takemichi and second division captain Takashi Mitsuya attempt to assist while Mikey fights Shuuji Hanma, the acting leader of Moebius, but they are outnumbered.

Golden Kamuy

Saichi Sugimoto, a survivor of the battle of 203 Hill in the Russo-Japanese War has become a miner in Hokkaido in order to provide for the widow of his dead comrade, Toraji. He hears a dubious story of hidden Ainu gold stashed by a criminal group, and accidentally finds clues to its location. He decides to search for the gold along with an Ainu girl, Asirpa, who rescues him from Hokkaido’s harsh northern wilderness. Though other parties are also hunting for the gold.

Tonight’s Episode: “Bad Sign” season 3

Kiroranke explains to Asirpa that he and Wilk were involved in the assassination of Emperor Alexander II. Meanwhile, the Russian sniper suspects that Ogata has set up a decoy and waits all night before making his move. Ogata is stricken by a high fever from and eating snow and exposure to the cold. Shiraishi tries to convince Asirpa to leave with him as he suspects that Kiroranke is only interested in extracting Wilk’s code from her. Asirpa refuses to leave, but demands more information about her father from Kiroranke.

SummerTime Rendering

Upon hearing of Ushio’s death, Shinpei returns to his hometown of Wakayama City on Hitogashima and reunites with his childhood friend’s family. The funeral goes smoothly, but under the surface something strange is brewing on the island.

Tonight’s Episode: “Made in Black”

Haine summons Shadows to attack Shinpei and the kids. However, as Shinpei reaches for Ushio’s seashell necklace in his pocket, Haine is startled and the Shadows retreat. Shinpei realizes that Haine has copied him in the third loop and now uses that guise in the current eighth loop, when he hears from Alan that the others have already gone out to meet him.
