Screening on the evening of Saturday, January 21^st 2023

JAFWA was glad to see all the people who turned up for the screening last week, be they regular, new or old attendees. It appeared that a good time was had by all.
But if you wait for Saturday, it appears that starting at assorted cinemas on Thursday will be the “That Time I was Re-incarnated as a Slime” movie “Scarlet Bond”. Be aware that some screenings will be dubbed into English, others properly subbed, so plan appropriately.

This week we have a couple of preview item to tempt you away from our regular program – one a post-apocalyptic tale of geo-engineering gone awry, the other about the gangland influences on Tokyo cafes in the Akihabara region. There are so many anime titles coming out each season, we would welcome any good suggestions as to what else JAFWA can preview.

We are also thinking of having a retro-anime timeslot, but which generation(s)-old show should we go with. We may put on a bean poll soon to find out, but first, do you have any suggestions?

The Devil Is a Part-Timer! (Hataraku Maou-sama!) season 2

Having been thwarted in his attempts to conquer Ente Isla, the mighty demon lord Satan escapes through a portal with his general Alciel… And winds up in modern day Tokyo with very little magical power left. His resources for world domination now consist of a tiny rented apartment and a job at a fast food restaurant. To survive and find a way to return to Ente Isla, Satan adopts the name Sadao Maou and finds that the Hero Emilia is in similar circumstances.

This evening’s Episode: “The Devil Begins Farming”

Chiho learns that due to an incident at her family’s farm, they need workers for the summer harvest, so she invites Maou, Alciel, and Urushihara to join them to work. The three are also overblown to discover the amount of land the family owns, as well as how big their house is. After working them for the day, they are taken to a nearby hot springs to clean-up when they suddenly run into Emi, Suzuno, and Alas Ramus.

Ascendance of a Bookworm (Honzuki no Gekokujuu) season 3

The story follows Motosu Urano, a book-loving post-secondary student and soon-to-be librarian who ends up crushed to death beneath a pile of books during an earthquake. With her dying breath, she wishes to be reincarnated in a world where she can read books forever. Urano awakens in the body of a weak, five-year-old girl named Myne in a world where books are scarce and only available to elites. Myne, retaining her memories from her previous life, decides to create and print her own books so that she can read again.

Spy x Family part 2

In order to ensure World Peace, a master spy who has to “build a family” to execute a mission, not realising that the girl he adopts as his daughter is a telepath, and the woman he agrees to be in a marriage with is a skilled assassin.

This evening’s Episode: “Uncle the Private Tutor / Daybreak”

Anya realizes her midterm exams take place during the new moon, when her telepathy doesn’t work and she cannot cheat. Yor invites Yuri to tutor her, and while they make no progress, Anya becomes inspired to study to help Loid with his missions. Nervous about Anya’s exam results, Loid sneaks into the school’s vault to alter her answers. At the same time, he encounters an amateur spy named Daybreak who is trying to sabotage the Desmond brothers’ answers.

In a world where land is being swallowed by the encroaching Great Snow Sea, humanity ekes out a harsh life above the Tenmaku that stretches from the roots to the tops of giant Orbital Trees. The story centers around Kaina, a boy who lives above the Tenmaku, and Liliha, the princess of the small country Atland in the Great Snow Sea.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Die Neue These (Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu Die Neue These Kaikou) second season

In humanity’s distant future, two interstellar states – the monarchic Galactic Empire and the democratic Free Planets Alliance – are embroiled in a never-ending war. The story focuses on the exploits of rivals Reinhard von Lohengramm and Yang Wen-li as they rise to power and fame in the Galactic Empire and the Free Planets Alliance respectively.

Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun (Made in Abyss: Retsujitsu no Ougonkyou) season 2

An orphan girl named Riko who lives in the town of Osu on an island in the sea of Beoluska. The city surrounds a strange, giant hole going deep into the earth, which is commonly called the Abyss. The Abyss harbours artefacts and remnants of a civilisation long gone, and is therefore the popular hunting spot for so-called Cave Raiders, who undertake arduous and dangerous descends into the mist-filled pit to recover whatever relics they can find. However, the deeper one goes into the Abyss, the more one is afflicted by a progressively fatal malady called the Curse of the Abyss; few who have descended into the lower regions have returned to tell of their experiences.

Tonight’s Episode: “The Return”

Reg returns to the village with Faputa’s arm, now aware that he promised to Faputa to use his incinerator to destroy the shield guarding the village’s entrance, which will allow her to enter. As Reg reunites with Riko, Wazukyan arrives to congratulate them. However, Riko surmises that all of the villagers, including Wazukyan, secretly desire to leave the village so they can continue to journey deeper into the abyss, and Wazukyan is trying to carry that out by having Riko use a Cradle of Desire to wish for a way for them to leave.

Jujutsu Kaisen

Negative human emotions – regret, bitterness, shame – are the source of all curses that infest the world and hide in everyday life, leading to death in the worst cases. Yuji Itadori, a particularly strong young man, attempts to save a friend from a curse, only to wind up consuming the special grade curse of Ryoumen Sukuna’s finger. Only a curse can eliminate another curse, and Yuji’s career as a cursed person who must exorcise curses has now begin.

This evening’s Episode: “For Myself”

Fushigogro’s powerful teacher, Satoru Gojo, arrives. Declaring himself the strongest sorcerer, he easily beats Sukuna and Yuji reassumes control. Satoru knocks him out but Megumi asks him to spare Yuji. The Jujutsu elders may be able to make use of Yuji, as they know that the demon Ryoumen Sukuna had 20 fingers but they have only found six.

preview – Akiba Maid War (Akiba Maid Sensou)

In Akihabara in 1999, a 17-year-old girl named Nagomi Wahira begins her new job working at a pig-themed maid cafe, trying to follow her dream of being a cheerful and hardworking maid. However, Nagomi soon finds the world of maid cafes in Akihabara is a lot more cutthroat than she anticipated at first.

This evening’s Episode: “Oink It Up! Starting Today, You’re an Akiba Maid!”

In 1985, an older maid is walking into a teahouse in Akihabara when she is gunned down by a rival maid. 14 years later, Akihabara is covered by multiple different maid cafes as a girl named Nagomi Wahira prepares to begin her new job working for the “Oinky Doink Cafe”, a pigsty-themed maid cafe. Nagomi is quickly pressed into service along with the stern yet professional 35 year old Ranko Mannen as new maids that same day. Despite their enthusiasm for the job, their lack of experience creates problems for the other maids. Then comes a task no other maid dares perform.

Golden Kamuy

Saichi Sugimoto, a survivor of the battle of 203 Hill in the Russo-Japanese War has become a miner in Hokkaido in order to provide for the widow of his dead comrade, Toraji. He hears a dubious story of hidden Ainu gold stashed by a criminal group, and accidentally finds clues to its location. He decides to search for the gold along with an Ainu girl, Asirpa, who rescues him from Hokkaido’s harsh northern wilderness. Though other parties are also hunting for the gold.

Tonight’s Episode: “The Border” season 3

Kiroranke’s group had travelled much further north on Sakhalin than Sugimoto believed, and were at near the Russian border although low on supplies. Back in Otaru, Lt. Tsurumi reveals to Nikaidou that Kiroranke was a teenage member of the group responsible for the assassination of Emperor Alexander II in Russia, and he leaked information to the Russians that Kiroranke was on his way into Russian Sakhalin.

SummerTime Rendering

Upon hearing of Ushio’s death, Shinpei returns to his hometown of Wakayama City on Hitogashima and reunites with his childhood friend’s family. The funeral goes smoothly, but under the surface something strange is brewing on the island.

Tonight’s Episode: “Face to Face”

Shinpei and Ushio sit down to talk with Karikiri, while the others listen in. After some pleasantries, Shinpei holds him at gunpoint and tosses him photos of himself from decades ago, revealing that Seido has told him, that Karikiri is actually Shidehiko Hishigata, founder of the Hishigata clan, husband to the original Haine.
