First an alert that the Japanese Film Festival is upon us. Book tickets early or risk missing out

The month of October brings further changes to the program at JAFWA.
Firstly, we weren’t able to implement all the new programs we originally intended to implement. Nor did we have room for a retro series. We got too ambitious. Sorry.
Secondly, we are going to start a new regular series this week – the second season of “The Devil is a Part-Timer”. Why did they wait so long to produce this sequel???
Thirdly, our beloved series “Spy x Family” finishes this evening, with two episodes. There will be a brief hiatus before the second series appears.
Fourthly, we will have a preview item this week, based off of a series of computer games.
Fifthly, we went with “Tokyo Revengers” because it turns out that “Jujutsu Kaisen” is commercially available locally.

Don’t forget that we go back to out 5:15PM start.

Japanese Calendars

It is that time of year again – when Japanese calendars for 2023 are available order. I have recieved an order alreasy, and I will probably fulfil the order from here. It is early yet, so not all of the calendars have been listed so far. The link I gave pointed to only Anime calendars, but the left menu shows other categories if you are interested.
This site may be slightly more up-to-date in titles being listed.

The Australian dollar is not buying much these days, but probably more than last year, but if we bundle our orders together, we should be able to get cheaper shipping rates. We have probably missed the pre-order period.

Cash for Containers

As people may have noticed, JAFWA collects the recyclable containers (cans and bottles) that are disposed of by our attendees. It helps in a small way.

Dates of Interest

Barring a resurgence of COVID-19 pestilence, these fannish events of interest are scheduled to happen:

• October 2022 onwards — JAFWA’s returns to normal hours, where we start (~5:15PM) and finish (~10:45PM), an hour later than Winter.
• October 15^th and 29^th 2022, 10AM to 4PM — Kai-con’s Artist Market. Free entry to Citiplace Community Centre just outside Perth Train station.
• Saturday November 5^th 2022, 9AM to 4PM — JAFWA fund raising Bunnings sausage sizzle at Cannignton Bunnings. Volunteers requested.
• November 5^th and 6^th 2022, 9AM to 5PM — Anime in the Valley. Located at the Swan Settlers Market in Herne Hill. Free entry.
• November 19^th 2022 — JAFWA’s 32^nd birthday.
• November 19^th to 20^th 2022, 10AM to 6PM — [ KaiCon ] Kaiga Anime Convention 2022 at Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre.
• Sunday November 27^th 2022 — Collectors Zone Toy and Hobby Fair at ECU Sports Fitness Centre, Joondalup.
• Saturday December 10^th 2022, 5:15PM to 10:30PM — JAFWA’s final screening of the year. Will be a non-regular program, so we are taking suggestions for what one-off items you want to be screened that night.
• Saturday January 14^th 2023 — as the Solstice festivities wane, JAFWA returns for a new year!

The Devil Is a Part-Timer! (Hataraku Maou-sama!) season 2

Having been thwarted in his attempts to conquer Ente Isla, the mighty demon lord Satan escapes through a portal with his general Alsiel… And winds up in modern day Tokyo with very little magical power left. His resources for world domination now consist of a tiny rented apartment and a job at a fast food restaurant. To survive and find a way to return to Ente Isla, Satan adopts the name Sadao Maou and finds that the Hero Emilia is in similar circumstances.

This evening’s Episode: “The Devil Screams in Sasazuka”

In the demon realm, a mysterious woman enters the abandoned Devil King’s castle, and sends the lone remaining plant to Earth. Meanwhile, Maou, Alciel, and Urushihara get into one of their usual arguments, with Emi mocking their poorness while visiting Suzuna. After Maou goes to his shift at MgRonald’s, Alciel attempts to teach Urushihara how to clean up the house, where they sense a weird presence nearby, which later starts to attack them.

Spy x Family

In order to ensure World Peace, a master spy who has to “build a family” to execute a mission, not realising that the girl he adopts as his daughter is a telepath, and the woman he agrees to be in a marriage with is a skilled assassin.

This evening’s Episodes: “Stella” and “Penguin Park” Finale

Loid takes Anya to volunteer at a hospital, hoping to earn Stella Stars through community service. However, her poor performance angers the staff and gets them dismissed. By chance, Anya detects a drowning patient’s distressing thoughts and rushes to save him, ultimately earning her the first Stella Star. Elsewhere, a genetically-altered white dog suddenly visualizes the Forgers in his mind.
After working tirelessly on extra side missions, Loid takes Anya and Yor to Berlint Aquarium to convince his neighbors that they are a happy family. However, while there, he is forced to undertake another mission of retrieving a microfilm containing chemical weapon plans that is being smuggled through a penguin.

Tonight’s Episode: “Lapis Lazuli part 1 ”

In a dream our hero Shiloh is summoned on a quest to aid peoples’ choices and find Love. First he has to deal with house-guests who want to be his disciples, and rather interesting plant-life and creatures. Then a rude stranger comes to town looking for someone. A choice to go out into the greater world comes along.

Shadow’s House season 2

In a Western-style mansion on a cliff lives the aristocratic, faceless Shadow family. They live together with lifelike doll attendants who serve as their faces. After finishing their “debut,” Kate, Emilico and three other pairs who started with them begin a new life as adults. With the mystery of the “Shadows House” still unsolved, a new incident occurs in the children’s wing. Kate and Emilico, whom the Star Bearers suspect of being malcontents, investigate a mysterious robed Shadow who may be the culprit.

Tonight’s Episodes: “A Great Cleaning ”

Kate & Emiliko have an unpleasant encounter with the Belle-twins. The living dolls are attacked by scorches that join into a huge phantom, then Oliver arrives with his new invention to fight it. Shaun and Rick spot a mysterious robed figure on ceiling beams and attempt to catch it.

Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun (Made in Abyss: Retsujitsu no Ougonkyou) season 2

An orphan girl named Riko who lives in the town of Ousu on an island in the sea of Beoluska. The city surrounds a strange, giant hole going deep into the earth, which is commonly called the Abyss. The Abyss harbours artefacts and remnants of a civilisation long gone, and is therefore the popular hunting spot for so-called Cave Raiders, who undertake arduous and dangerous descends into the mist-filled pit to recover whatever relics they can find. However, the deeper one goes into the Abyss, the more one is afflicted by a progressively fatal malady called the Curse of the Abyss; few who have descended into the lower regions have returned to tell of their experiences.

Tonight’s Episodes: “Capital of the Unreturned ”

Fascinated by the sixth layer, Riko, Reg, and Nanachi do some exploring and find that the layer has a hot, desert-like environment littered with numerous ruins, and is also populated by extremely dangerous wildlife. All the while, the trio are quietly observed by a mysterious being. The next day, Riko wakes up to find that her White Whistle has been stolen.

Rising of the Shield Hero (Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari) season 2

Naofumi Iwatani was summoned into a fantasy world along with three other people to become the world’s Heroes. Each of the heroes were respectively equipped with their own legendary equipment when summoned. Naofumi happened to receive the Legendary Shield, the sole defensive equipment, while the others received weapons capable of attacking. Unlike the other heroes who are fully supported by the kingdom and gain several strong allies each, Naofumi’s luck turns to the worse, shunned by everyone from the King to peasants, Naofumi is forced to train as a hero alone while working to make ends meet acquiring only the most pitiful of followers.

Tonight’s Episode: “A Parting in the Snow”

With their options limited and the next Wave ten days away, Kizuna suggests travelling to her summoned country of Sikul for help. However, due to needing to cross several borders to do so, she suggests an alternative, using the Dragon Hourglass in the capital of Mikakage, the city they’re currently in, to use her “Return Codex” skill to teleport them all there. While waiting in town to grind for EXP and obtain money, Kizuna introduces Naofumi to the many different inhabitants of the world,

Tokyo Revengers

Watching the news, Takemichi Hanagaki learns that his girlfriend from way back in middle school, Hinata Tachibana, has died. The only girlfriend he ever had was just killed by a villainous group known as the Tokyo Manji Gang. He lives in a crappy apartment with thin walls, and his younger boss treats him like an idiot. At the height of his rock-bottom life, he suddenly time-leaps twelve years back to his middle school days. To save Hinata, and change the life he spent running away, hopeless part-timer Takemichi must aim for the top of Kanto’s most sinister delinquent gang.

Tonight’s Episode: “Resist”

Naoto tells Takemichi that he can travel through time when they shake hands, and that the only way to save Hinata is to prevent Manjiro Sano and Tetta Kisaki, the two members of the Tokyo Manji Gang, from ever meeting each other. Takemichi travels back in time to find himself reliving the events of being a slave of Masataka Kiyomizu, a member of the Tokyo Manji Gang, along with the rest of his friends.

Golden Kamuy

Saichi Sugimoto, a survivor of the battle of 203 Hill in the Russo-Japanese War has become a miner in Hokkaido in order to provide for the widow of his dead comrade, Toraji. He hears a dubious story of hidden Ainu gold stashed by a criminal group, and accidentally finds clues to its location. He decides to search for the gold along with an Ainu girl, Asirpa, who rescues him from Hokkaido’s harsh northern wilderness. Though other parties are also hunting for the gold.

Tonight’s Episode: “Overwhelmed” season 2

Under the guise of quelling a prison riot, Tsurumi leads an assault on Abashiri Prison. Tsurumi corners Sugimoto in Nopperabo’s cell, but Kadokura releases the master prison lock to save himself, freeing all of the prison’s inmates. Hijikata and Anji take Asirpa and follow Inudou to a chapel where Wilk is being held, but Asirpa flees.

SummerTime Rendering

Upon hearing of Ushio’s death, Shinpei returns to his hometown of Wakayama City on Hitogashima and reunites with his childhood friend’s family. The funeral goes smoothly, but under the surface something strange is brewing on the island.

Tonight’s Episode: “Dinner Time”

Nezu and Nagumo prepare to enter the sewers. Shadow-Shiori appears to both Mio and Tetsu. As Shiori is technically a missing child Tetsu is forced to follow her. After killing the Shadow-babies Shinpei sees the cave is covered in coral and connects to the ocean. Ushio’s arm grows noticeably worse and to temporarily stop the pain she deletes her damaged arm. Mio’s friend Tokiko suddenly appears.
