Screening on the evening of Saturday, August 20^th 2022

August continues here at JAFWA. Your duly elected (by default) committee has tried to get two preview items into the program this week. One is a gorgeous work of art, if we can get the timing right. Otherwise we will go with a Japanese remake of a US CGI show. The other is a popular anime from last year, derived from a popular manga, that probably deserves to see the light of night at JAFWA.

PS the more common martial art is spelled “jiujutsu”, the “jiu” can be translated as “gentle, soft, supple, flexible, pliable, or yielding”, and “jutsu” can be translated as “art or technique”.

Cash for Containers

As people may have noticed, JAFWA collects the recyclable containers (cans and bottles) that are disposed of by our attendees. It helps in a small way.

Log Horizon series III – Destruction of the Round Table

It’s been a year since Shiroe and his friends were trapped in Akiba due to the Catastrophe. Their forging of the Round Table has brought order and prosperity to its people. But fracturing political alliances and the constant menace of the Genius monsters threaten to destabilize all they’ve fought for and built.

This evening’s Episode: “Immortal in Ethereal Utopia”

Misa and Rieze hold a puppet show to tell Shiroe and the others Crusty’s exploits since his disappearance. They reveal that stranded into the Chinese server, Crusty was rescued by a wolf and sheltered into a temple maintained by the magician Youren but was afflicted with a curse that seals most of his powers and memories. Meanwhile, Kanami and her party continue their journey to Yamato to investigate the cause of the apocalypse.

Spy x Family

In order to ensure World Peace, a master spy who has to “build a family” to execute a mission, not realising that the girl he adopts as his daughter is a telepath, and the woman he agrees to be in a marriage with is a skilled assassin.

This evening’s Episode: “Will They Pass or Fail”

Despite failing the interview, Anya is first on the waiting list, thanks to Henderson’s intervention, and is accepted into Eden Academy three days later. While celebrating Anya’s acceptance with Franky, a drunken Franky spurs Anya into requesting Loid to reenact a rescue scene from her favorite cartoon, Spy Wars as a reward.

Deaimon

Nagomu is a man who left his home in Kyoto and his family’s confectionery shop when he became a musician. Upon hearing that his father has been hospitalized though, he comes back home to take over the family business. However, while he was gone, a young girl named Itsuka started working at the shop. The whereabouts of Itsuka’s parents is unknown, and she has no other relatives, and Nagomu finds himself as foster parent for Itsuka. Itsuka, on the other hand, dislikes Nagomu for abandoning the family to become a musician. She proclaims that it will be her who will take over the shop one day instead of Nagomu.

Tonight’s Episode: “Reminiscing About Waiting for Spring”

Heigo decides to close Ryokushou for the New Year. Itsuka receives New Year’s money from both Nagumo and his parents. An elderly man is disappointed they are closed as he wanted sweets for his mother’s grave as he hasn’t visited in years and doesn’t want to go empty handed. Nagumo secretly gives him Hanabiramochi he made during training, since they can’t be sold, and Itsuka helps.

Lupin III part 6

The World’s greatest gentleman thief Lupin III, and cohorts, contending with detective Sherlock Holmes when Lupin becomes the top suspect in the murder of the former’s longtime partner, Dr. Watson. Lupin is also after a treasure hidden by The Raven, a mysterious organisation that manipulates the British government from the shadows

Tonight’s Episodes: “Two Terrible Ladies ”

While preparing for a date with Lupin, Fujiko receives an unexpected visit from an old associate, Amelia, a devil-may-care con artist. Despite their lackluster success rate, Amelia wants to team up with Fujiko again to steal a valuable necklace from a cult leader.

Demon Slayer (Kimetsu no Yaiba) – season 2

Tanjiro Kamado is a kindhearted and intelligent boy who lives with his family, making money by selling charcoal. Everything changes when his family is attacked and slaughtered by demons (oni). Tanjiro and his sister Nezuko are the sole survivors of the incident. Nezuko has now become a demon, but still surprisingly shows signs of human emotion and thought. Tanjiro becomes a demon slayer to help his sister turn human again and to prevent the same tragedy that happened to him and his sister, from happening to others.

Tonight’s Episode: “Gathering ” Entertainment District arc

Taking Nezuko to safety, Tanjiro focuses on the coming battle despite his injuries. Tengen the hashira trades barbs with Gyutaro and Daki over their clashing beliefs. As they fight, Tengen separates the siblings but realizes he was poisoned by Gyutaro’s earlier cut. Tengen is joined by Tanjiro, Zenitsu, and Inosuke, praising and acknowledging them.

Rising of the Shield Hero (Fumetsu no Anata e) season 2

Naofumi Iwatani was summoned into a fantasy world along with three other people to become the world’s Heroes. Each of the heroes were respectively equipped with their own legendary equipment when summoned. Naofumi happened to receive the Legendary Shield, the sole defensive equipment, while the others received weapons capable of attacking. Unlike the other heroes who are fully supported by the kingdom and gain several strong allies each, Naofumi’s luck turns to the worse, shunned by everyone from the King to peasants, Naofumi is forced to train as a hero alone while working to make ends meet acquiring only the most pitiful of followers.

Tonight’s Episode: “Footprints of the Spirit Tortoise”

After the hooded woman disappears, Naofumi and the Queen meet up with the generals of the surrounding nations to discuss their plan to deal with the Spirit Tortoise. They reveal that the Seven Star Heroes, people who possess vassal weapons, have been called upon to assist, but may not make it within the three days until the Tortoise wakes back up.

Negative human emotions – regret, bitterness, shame – are the source of all curses that infest the world and hide in everyday life, leading to death in the worst cases. Yuji Itadori, a particularly strong young man, attempts to save a friend from a curse, only to wind up consuming the special grade curse of Ryoumen Sukuna’s finger. Only a curse can eliminate another curse, and Yuji’s career as a cursed person who must exorcise curses has now begin.

Tonight’s Episode: “Ryomen Sukuna”

Yuji Itadori is a high school student with incredible athleticism and sports talent. Yuji’s grandfather tells him to use his strength to help others just before his death. Megumi Fushiguro, a student from Tokyo Metropolitan Magic Technical College, is tasked with searching for a “Cursed Object”, a finger of Ryomen Sukuna, a powerful supernatural monster known as a “Curse”. Megumi tracks Yuji down, having sensed the finger’s energy from him.

Summer Time Rendering

Upon hearing of Ushio’s death, Shinpei returns to his hometown of Wakayama City on Hitogashima and reunites with his childhood friend’s family. The funeral goes smoothly, but under the surface something strange is brewing on the island.

Tonight’s Episode: “Orbital Resonance”

On this rewind it is revealed Nagumo reached the island already aware of the Shadows presence. The island priest, Karakiri Masahito, greets her at the funeral as Minakata Hizuru, revealing she grew up on the island. Shinpei, determined to do things right, uses Nagumo’s trick for detecting Shadows and realizes at the funeral that Shiori and both her parents were already Shadows.

Attack On Titan (Shingeki ni Kyojin) season 4 part B

Young Eldian Warrior candidates Gabi Braun and Falco Grice, seeking to inherit Reiner’s Armored Titan four years after the failed mission to claim the Founding Titan. As Marley’s dominance over competing nations begins to weaken due to the development of anti-titan weaponry, they plan to invade Paradis to develop their military using the resources on the island and also recover the Founding Titan. However, Eren Yeager and the Survey Corps have reached the Marley shoreline.

Tonight’s Episodes: “Pride”

The last of the Wall Titans have left the sight of the walls as the civilians continue taking sides in Eren’s course of action. After taking out the pursuing Jaegerists, Hange sets up camp in the forest and stitches up Levi’s wounds. Wondering about living isolated in the woods, they receive Eren’s message to the Eldians. Later when Hange and Levi find Pieck and Magath, they offer to ally with them over Levi’s goal of killing Zeke. Connie arrives with Falco in Ragako village where he suggests an awkward task to Falco so he could eventually feed the boy to his immobile Titan mother.
