No Screening on Saturday 28th March 2020

President Drew’s Announcement on the hiatus of JAFWA

My fellow JAFWANs,

On 22 March a Federal announcement was made on public gatherings. Given how JAFWA uses the hall and our size, we met the requirements to continue operation.

However, the City of South Perth has decided to err on the side of caution, and at 12:20 on 23 March 2020 I was notified that the City of South Perth has therefore cancelled all bookings effective immediately.

As JAFWA has a long-term booking, these will be immediately rebooked once the hall is re-opened.

It is very unfortunate, but also a practical way to protect all at our club and our society. JAFWA is a grand part of society, and so JAFWA must do its part to minimise infection spread.

Therefore, effective immediately, all JAFWA memberships are extended for the duration of the Social Gathering freeze (a pause on your membership until JAFWA reopens). As a sign of good faith from the City of South Perth, JAFWA has been granted permission to retain the keys to the premises. They expect that JAFWA will return, as does your JAFWA committee.

JAFWA will return once the Social Gathering freeze is over, and as current president I hope and expect to see all your wonderful faces present when we do recommence our club activities. The first screening back, whenever that may be, will be that same programme as per 27 March 2020. Members recorded on the current March 2020 attendance sheet will be used for a Membership prize draw that night.

JJAFWA belongs to you. Please keep healthy over the upcoming period, and stoke the fires of enthusiasm for your club. We will be communicating via Facebook and a members-based email group on upcoming shows that we hope to screen, anime news and some small competitions. Discussions and questions are welcome!

Finally, my personal email is attached. Please contact me/the committee if you need or want to talk – the JAFWA committee does indeed care about our members and their health, as the club wouldn’t be what it is without your support. We can be contacted via:
jafwa.anime@gmail.com (our main general contact);
JAFWA via Facebook;
drewedgar1981@gmail.com – me directly (and please no signing me up for spam). If for any reason you may be affected by Corvid-19, my inbox is always open.

Many thanks for your support for JAFWA, I look forward to seeing you ASAP!

Screening to be, date to be advised

The meeting of March 21 was quite the success, with everybody maintaining their 1.5 metre spread, except the couple of groups who huddled together, similar to how they arrived. Sanitiser flowed freely, and we definately resisted the ‘Rona. Long may we reign healthy!
Still, the updated regulations now say that JAFWA is On Hold. The following is what will happen when JAFWA returns!

Now that the third season of “Psycho Pass” has finished on its cliff-hanger, we shall next celebrate with a full length anime film to fill the gap before we begin some new series regularly. We technically don’t have anything pandemic related, though our movie will feature that which has plagued mankind all of our history, be it this world or isekai. Prepare for the war-time action and magic of “The Saga of Tanya the Evil”!

Saga of Tanya the Evil

Be aware that due to violence portrayed, the movie will be last in the program, and it is long enough that we will have to put our Late Break somewhat early.

There was a possibility that JAFWA and anime club POWA (screening Sundays in Joondalup) might join forces to host an Anime Quiz Night, perhaps on July 4th. Anybody interested?

JAFWA was going to do a Bunnings Sausage Sizzle on May 2nd, down at Cannington. Bunnings has now indicated that it will be cancelled. We appreciate those volunteers who had volunteered to help out.

Fruits Basket (2019 remake)

After a family tragedy turns her life upside down, plucky high schooler Tohru Honda takes matters into her own hands and moves out into a tent. Unfortunately for her, she pitches her new home on private land belonging to the mysterious Sohma clan, and it isn’t long before the owners discover her secret. But, as Tohru quickly finds out when the family offers to take her in, the Sohmas have a secret of their own–when touched by the opposite sex, they turn into the animals of the Chinese Zodiac.

This evening’s Episode:Because I Was Happy

Tohru Honda’s friend Saki Hanajima has the mysterious Wave powers that frighten Tohru’s enemies. But why does she happen to have these powers, and how did she become close friends with Tohru and former gang girl Arisa Uotani? It is flashback time.

Non Non Biyori

In the countryside small town village of Asahigaoka, a place lacking many of the conveniences that people from the city are accustomed to. The nearest stores are a few miles away and one of the local schools consists of only five students, each of whom is in a different grade of elementary or middle school. Hotaru Ichijo, a fifth grader from Tokyo, transfers into Asahigaoka Branch School and has to adjust to countryside life with her new friends.

This evening’s Episode:We Tried Having a Cultural Festival

Since the school, with only 5 students, doesn’t hold cultural festivals, Natsumi suggests they hold their own and invite the alumni, including Kaede, Konomi and Hikage. At the festival, the girls run a café, hold an art exhibit and put on a play. However they are not very co-ordinated, and over extend themselves.

Dr Stone

Typical student Taiju Oki tells his science-loving friend Senku Ishigami that he will confess his feelings to their classmate Yuzuriha Ogawa. He prepares to make his confession to Yuzuriha under a camphor tree on the school grounds, but his attempt is interrupted when a bright light appears in the sky. Taiju pushes Yuzuriha to the tree to protect her as the light petrifies them along with the entire human population. After 3700 years spent trapped in stone, Senku and Taiju are somehow revived from their petrified state six months apart in what they now call the Stone World.

This evening’s Episode:Let There Be the Light of Science

During their ramen patronage, the gang are approached by Gen Asagiri, a revived magician from Senku’s time, who had been sent by Tsukasa to confirm Senku’s death but claims he will give a false report instead. Using the successfully completed iron, Senku takes advantage of a sudden thunderstorm to turn it into powerful magnets. Electric power and lights are on the horizon.

Mob Psycho 100 season 2

Shigeo Kageyama’s nickname is “Mob”. A slang term for a background character, someone who doesn’t stand out. In truth he is an incredibly powerful psychic who has suppressed his emotions in order to avoid causing a catastrophe. Mob would like nothing better than to live a normal life and have feelings just like anyone else, but with his incredible psychic powers there’s no telling what might happen if he did.

Tonight’s Episode:Show Me What You’ve Got ~Band Together~

On the verge of exploding emotionally, Dimple calms Mob down and reveals that the bodies were fake. Mob starts looking for espers, only to find two Scars from the main branch of Claw looking for him, none of whom know what has happened to his family. Koyama and Sakurai suddenly show up to unite Mob with the rest of the gang, including the esper kids from the Awakening Lab, most of the former 7th Division’s Scars and Reigen. It turns out Claw was going for an all-out attack against the city, prior to World Conquest, whilst getting rid of all obstacles that might pose a threat.

Fire Force (En’en no Shouboutai, literally “Blazing Firefighting Corps”)

In the year 198 of the Age of the Sun, Tokyo is a crowded cosmopolis. But the world’s most populous city is threatened by devils that cause people to burst into flame at random. The only ones who can stop it are the Pyrofighters, a team of specialized firefighters. The young Shinra, blessed with the ability to ignite his feet and travel at the speed of a rocket, wants nothing more than to be a hero, and knows that this is the place for him. But he’s not the best at following orders.

Tonight’s Episode:The Spreading Malice

Shinra saves Tamaki from the traitorous Lieutenant Rekka, and then engages him in a violent battle. They use all of their pyrokinesis abilities, but fight to a standstill. Shinra uses his extra mobility to attack Rekka again while Tamaki keeps the children away from harm. Rekka admits that he has been searching for children in who have latent pyrokinesis abilities, creating many Infernals in the process and arousing Shinra’s suspicions about the abduction of his brother.

Sword Art Online: Alicization (series 3 part 2) “War of Underworld”

Kazuto has been recruited to assist in testing an experimental FullDive machine, Soul Translator (STL), which has an interface that is far more realistic and complex than the previous machine he had played to help develop an artificial intelligence for the Ministry of Defense (MOD) named A.L.I.C.E. He tests the STL by entering a virtual reality cyberspace created with The Seed package, named UnderWorld (UW). In the UW, the flow of time proceeds a thousand times faster than in the real world, and Kirito’s memories of what happens inside are restricted.

Tonight’s Episode:Sword and Fist

With the decoy force heading through the dark territory towards the World’s End Altar, Emperor Vecta orders the Pugilists and the Dark Knights to pursue. Sheyta Synthesis 12, otherwise known as Sheyta the Silent, considers herself to be cursed with the ability to cut anything she touches, no matter how hard the object is. Iskahn, leader of the Pugilist Guild, considers himself to be uncuttable by any object imaginable. Enter the Goddess of Creation, Stacia, who shall descend from the sky.

Movie – The Saga of Tanya the Evil (Youjo Senki) – ????, literally “The Military Chronicles of a Little Girl”

In an alternate universe similar to 1910’s Europe, in an empire torn apart by countless wars with all nearby countries. An arrogant Japanese slaryman is reborn as Second Lieutenant Tanya Degurechaff of the Imperial Army, a 9-year-old soldier girl. In search for an escape, Tanya decides to enter into the Empire’s Mages Division and fight in World War I, hoping to reach a high enough rank as fast as possible to remain far from the battlefield and in this way avoid the risk of being killed. Even if she’s now forced to speak with a young girl’s lisp, Tanya soon turns into a ruthless soldier who prioritises efficiency and her own career over anything else, even the lives of those beneath her.

Tonight’s Episode:The Movie

However, upon their arrival in Empire, Rerugen orders the 203rd to an immediate reconnaissance mission on the Empire’s eastern border with the Russy Federation. A surprise attack by the Russy Federation’s vastly numerical superiority is hard to stop, but High Command knows the perfect Major for the job.
