Welcome to “Neko no Hi“!

In Japan, February 22 is sometimes known as Neko no Hi, ie “Day of Cats” (Japanese wordplay on 2 2 / 2 / 2 0). We would like you to turn up to JAFWA with some sort of cat motif, if not full cat cosplay.

JAFWA continues its mission to make people embrace the cultural diversity of Japanese anime, and this week we demonstrate some of the other anime available in Japan, in a spin-off of a popular franchise from 2011.

Special General Meeting

A reminder that JAFWA is having a Special General Meeting during the Dinner Break of Feb 22^nd, to discuss matters regarding our marathon screenings. Could all members attend please.

There is a possibility that JAFWA and anime club POWA (screening Sundays in Joondalup) might join forces to host an Anime Quiz Night, perhaps on July 4^th. Anybody interested?

JAFWA is doing a Bunnings Sausage Sizzle on May 2^nd, down at Cannington. We would appreciate a couple of volunteers to help out.

Fruits Basket (2019 remake)

After a family tragedy turns her life upside down, plucky high schooler Tohru Honda takes matters into her own hands and moves out into a tent. Unfortunately for her, she pitches her new home on private land belonging to the mysterious Sohma clan, and it isn’t long before the owners discover her secret. But, as Tohru quickly finds out when the family offers to take her in, the Sohmas have a secret of their own–when touched by the opposite sex, they turn into the animals of the Chinese Zodiac.

This evening’s Episode: “What’s Important Is…”

Hatsuharu (Ox of the Zodiac) brings over an exhausted Kisa Sohma, who is the Tiger of the Zodiac, to Shigure’s (Dog of the Zodiac) home. He reveals how Kisa ran away from home after being constantly bullied at school and has since been unable to speak. After biting him, she runs off, prompting Tohru to follow her. Kisa’s situation also forcefully reminds Yuki (Rat of the Zodiac) of his own earlier suffering from Akito.

Non Non Biyori

In the countryside small town village of Asahigaoka, a place lacking many of the conveniences that people from the city are accustomed to. The nearest stores are a few miles away and one of the local schools consists of only five students, each of whom is in a different grade of elementary or middle school. Hotaru Ichijo, a fifth grader from Tokyo, transfers into Asahigaoka Branch School and has to adjust to countryside life with her new friends.

This evening’s Episode: “I Became a Ghost and Tried Hard”

Natsumi gets chewed out by her mother over her poor school grades whilst also trying to hide her poor test results from her. Afterwards, the girls visit Hotaru, who attempts to hide the vast number of handmade Komari plushies in her room. Later that night, the gang have a test of courage at the shrine.

Dr Stone

Typical student Taiju Oki tells his science-loving friend Senku Ishigami that he will confess his feelings to their classmate Yuzuriha Ogawa. He prepares to make his confession to Yuzuriha under a camphor tree on the school grounds, but his attempt is interrupted when a bright light appears in the sky. Taiju pushes Yuzuriha to the tree to protect her as the light petrifies them along with the entire human population. After 3700 years spent trapped in stone, Senku and Taiju are somehow revived from their petrified state six months apart in what they now call the Stone World.

This evening’s Episode: “Two Nations of the Stone World”

The revival fluid successfully revives Senku, after he recalls how he found Taiju and began work on unpetrifying him, leading him to become more curious about the fluid’s regenerative properties. To this end, Senku sends Taiju and Yuzuriha to infiltrate Tsukasa’s army as spies while he searches for new allies. Meanwhile, a mysterious girl named Kohaku attempts to attack Tsukasa, who traps her under a tree before heading towards the miracle water cave.

Mob Psycho 100 season 2

Shigeo Kageyama’s nickname is “Mob”. A slang term for a background character, someone who doesn’t stand out. In truth he is an incredibly powerful psychic who has suppressed his emotions in order to avoid causing a catastrophe. Mob would like nothing better than to live a normal life and have feelings just like anyone else, but with his incredible psychic powers there’s no telling what might happen if he did.

Tonight’s Episode: “Discord ~Choices~ ”

The ghost of Keiji Mogami explains that he was a psychic like Mob. When he was alive, his mother had fallen ill. Keiji undertook extreme jobs to pay for his mom’s treatment. His mom died of unknown reasons, but she blamed Keiji for her death. Keiji then committed suicide and became an evil spirit. Inside the nightmare dreamscappe of Mob, Keiji, disguised as Minori, also transfers into his class and she leads her classmates in constantly bullying Mob.

Fire Force (En’en no Shouboutai, literally “Blazing Firefighting Corps”)

In the year 198 of the Age of the Sun, Tokyo is a crowded cosmopolis. But the world’s most populous city is threatened by devils that cause people to burst into flame at random. The only ones who can stop it are the Pyrofighters, a team of specialized firefighters. The young Shinra, blessed with the ability to ignite his feet and travel at the speed of a rocket, wants nothing more than to be a hero, and knows that this is the place for him. But he’s not the best at following orders.

Tonight’s Episode: “The Battle Begins ”

Shinra finds Sister Iris praying in the chapel, but she denies anything is troubling her. During training Captain Obi warns the rookies about the second generation cases who cannot start fires but can control them, which also makes them formidable opponents, especially as he proposes that Company 8 will be using force to get information about Infernals from Princess Hibana and Company 5. Meanwhile Sister Iris visits Princess Hibana to reduce tensions between the companies, but Hibana plans to use her as bait to attract Company 8.

Demon Slayer (Kimetsu no Yaiba)

Tanjiro Kamado is a kindhearted and intelligent boy who lives with his family, making money by selling charcoal. Everything changes when his family is attacked and slaughtered by demons (oni). Tanjiro and his sister Nezuko are the sole survivors of the incident. Nezuko has now become a demon, but still surprisingly shows signs of human emotion and thought. Tanjiro becomes a demon slayer to help his sister turn human again and to prevent the same tragedy that happened to him and his sister, from happening to others.

Tonight’s Episode: “Swordsman Accompanying a Demon”

Placing Nezuko in a box he carries on his back, Tanjiro travels with her to the town where young girls are vanishing at night. There he meets Kazumi, whose fiancee Satoko vanished the previous night. Kazumi takes him to where his girlfriend was last seen and Tanjiro begins to track the demon’s scent.

Tonight’s Episode: “Have You Heard? That Rumor About the Magical Girls ”

Iroha Tamaki is a magical girl who can’t remember the wish she made with Kyubey in order to become one. While meeting up with another magical girl named Kuroe, she learns of a rumor that magical girls can apparently be saved if they go to Kamihama City. The two suddenly find themselves caught up in a Witch’s labyrinth on the train they were riding, which soon merges with that of another Witch residing in Kamihama.

Cop Craft

15 years ago, an unknown hyperspace gate opened over the Pacific. Beyond this gate lies Reto Semaani, a strange alternate world where fairies and demons live. San Teresa City — a city where over two million immigrants live from both worlds. As a result, there are the haves and the have-nots. Here is the world’s newest “city of dreams.” But in the shadow of the chaos, crime is rampant: drugs, prostitution, and weapon trafficking. The detectives who stand up to these heinous crimes are in the San Teresa City Police. When the detective Kei Matoba and the alternate-world knight Tirana — two individuals who differ in gender, personality, and even world of origin — meet, an incident erupts.

Tonight’s Episode: “Need For Speed”

After a speeding truck clips Kei’s car, Kei chases down the truck only to find the driver missing and a ton of porn mags spilled onto the road. Tilarna moves Kei’s car but accidentally leaves it in the path of a different truck, resulting in the car being destroyed. The chief orders Kei to find out who stole the truck full of porn mags and Tilarna to get a driver’s license. Tilarna is exposed to porn for the first time.

Psycho-Pass season 3

In a future Japan where the psychological profiling system Sybil determines your place in society, or your removal for the good of society, now veteran Inspector Akane Tsunemori has been arrested by Public Security, for putting the public in danger. The unfolding story and the truth Tsunemori seeks involves two new investigators: Arato Shindo and Kei Mikhail Ignatov.

Tonight’s Episode: “Agamemnon’s Offering”

Ignatov visits ex-Inspector Kira, whose partner was killed in a supposed auto accident. Kira warns Ignatov that they are investigating “Foxes,” people who commit crimes without degrading their Hues and that such people have infiltrated the Public Safety Bureau. Governor Komiya organizes the Mitake Special Religious Zone which allows free practice of religion. However, the opening conference is attacked by a suicide bomber.
