Screening on Saturday 28th September 2019

Below is the program for the evening of Saturday September 28th, 2019.

Though this may be the long weekend to celebrate the Queen’s Birthday, we 10 billion percent hope you will attend and enjoy our little program.
Before the Dinner Break we are going to have two episodes of “Fruits Basket”, and a preview item, proving that when the apocalypse comes you can still rock on. Meaning that we will push the next installment of “Isekai Quartet” into October.

This week we will have our monthly member’s prize draw, after we have our monthly survey of the various shows we have screened recently. So vote well in the survey, using an ordinal scale from 1 for most favourite, 2 for second favourite, and so on up to 20, if you have opinions on all twenty titles. Unfortunately I am not permitted to say “vote often”, merely “vote well”.

On December 14th we will have our end of year marathon screening, and your Suggestions are welcome. The JAFWA committee has already scheduled room for “Akira”, and we have received a request for the movie “Millenium Actress”, as well as the “Girls und Panzer” movie, and something “Gundam”. Any other requests/suggestions?
Be aware, we also intend to run an auction on behalf of our members. Tell us what you want us to auction of yours, preferably well in advance, so we can schedule enough time into the program, as well as inform people so that they can bring plenty of money to bid.

A reminder that JAFWA member Dale is offering to do a bulk import order of Japanese calendars, in order to reduce shipping costs. The 2020 calendars are currently in their pre-order discount period, with such titles as seen here or here, with more to come as the publishing companies confirm their schedules. Is anyone interested in ordering Japanese calendars via Dale?

Fruits Basket (2019 remake)

After a family tragedy turns her life upside down, plucky high schooler Tohru Honda takes matters into her own hands and moves out into a tent. Unfortunately for her, she pitches her new home on private land belonging to the mysterious Sohma clan, and it isn’t long before the owners discover her secret. But, as Tohru quickly finds out when the family offers to take her in, the Sohmas have a secret of their own–when touched by the opposite sex, they turn into the animals of the Chinese Zodiac.

This evening’s Episodes: “Let’s Play Rich Man-Poor Man!” and “What Year Is She?”

Tohru Honda’s life is getting hectic, now that she is temporarily living at the Sohma’s house and keeping their secret at school. Preparing for the school cultural festival, new student Kyo’s idea is shot down so he leaves it to Yuki. Tohru’s friends bait Kyo into playing a game. Yuki is jealous that Kyo gets on well with people so Tohru encourages Yuki to try as well. However things begin to go pear shaped when a strange, shy girl named Kagura visits the Sohma house. Kagura is not above a little violence to get her way, when she claims Yuki is her fiancee and Tohru her rival.

Taiju is about to confess to the girl he loves when a mysterious force hits the Earth and turns every human into stone. Taiju and his friend Senku wake up thousands of years later and begin to rebuild society with the power of Science.

Tonight’s Episode: “Stone World ”

After five years of infatuation, Taiju Oki is about to confess to his love to fellow student Yuzuriha Ogawa. Suddenly a green light turns every human on the planet into stone and 3,700 years later, nature has taken over. Taiju manages to break free from his imprisonment. After finding the tree that Yuzuriha’s petrified state is in, he soon meets up with his genius friend Senku Ishigami, who had awoken six months earlier. As the only two humans freed from stone, Senku seeks to rebuild civilization in this “stone world” using his knowledge of science and Taiju’s brawn.

Kanata no Astra (Astra: Lost in Space)

In the year 2063, travelling through space has become commonplace. Eight students from Caird High School, along with one child, set out for a school camp on a nearby planet. However, the students are then mysteriously transported 5,000 light years away from home, with no way to call for help. Aboard an abandoned spaceship they call the Astra, these nine students slowly try to make their way back and figure out why they were transported in the first place.

This evening’s Episode: “Star of Hope ”

In light of their combined effort to prevent the Astra from crashing, the students conclude that the saboteur has a desire for survival as well and decide not to actively investigate for the time being. They land on Shummoor and begin foraging for food. Unfortunately, they discover that most of the edible plants on Shummoor spoil extremely quickly making them unsuitable for long term storage, and the animals are inedible, meaning they do not have enough food supplies for the next leg of the trip.

Mob Psycho 100

Shigeo Kageyama’s nickname is “Mob”. A slang term for a background character, someone who doesn’t stand out. In truth he is an incredibly powerful psychic who has suppressed his emotions in order to avoid causing a catastrophe. Mob would like nothing better than to live a normal life and have feelings just like anyone else, but with his incredible psychic powers there’s no telling what might happen if he did.

Tonight’s Episode: “Idiots Only Event -Kin- ”

delinquents from Mob’s school (Salt Middle School) are in a turf war with a rival school (Black Vinegar Middle School). When the rival delinquents are unable to win, they call for their leader, Teruki “Teru” Hanazawa, who disposes of the Salt delinquents with ease. Meanwhile, Mob has been haunted all day by the weakened spirit of Dimple, who claims to have reformed.

Rising of the Shield Hero (Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari)

Naofumi Iwatani was summoned into a parallel world along with three other people to become the world’s Heroes. Each of the heroes were respectively equipped with their own legendary equipment when summoned. Naofumi happened to receive the Legendary Shield, the sole defensive equipment, while the others received weapons capable of attacking. Unlike the other heroes who are fully supported by the kingdom and gain several strong allies each, Naofumi’s luck turns to the worse, shunned by everyone from the King to peasants, Naofumi is forced to train as a hero alone while working to make ends meet acquiring only the most pitiful of followers. As he little by little gain the trust and gratitude of the people with their heroic actions, Naofumi and his companions work hard to fulfill their mission as saviors of the world, while unraveling its deepest secrets.

Tonight’s Episode: “A Conspiracy Linked ”

Fitoria takes Naofumi and his party to a place near one of the heroes so that he can start reconciling with them. Parting ways, Naofumi’s party arrives at an outpost where they meet Motoyasu, who Naofumi attempts to reason with. But Motoyasu refuses to listen, accusing Naofumi of killing Ren and Itsuki as he attacking him.

Yakusoku no Neverland (The Promised Neverland)

Emma is an 11-year-old orphan living in Grace Field House, a small orphanage housing her and her 37 siblings. Life had never been better; with food that tasted gourmet, plush beds, snow-white uniforms, and the love of their “Mother” (the caretaker) Isabella, as well the litany of daily exams that Emma always aced with her two best friends Ray and Norman. The orphans are basically allowed to do whatever they want, except to venture out of the compounds or the gate that connects the house to the outside world. Then she finds out the truth. Determined to break out of Grace Field House, Norman and Emma partner up with Ray to peel away at the façade of the farm and find a way to escape with all their other siblings.

Tonight’s Episode: “031145 ”

The conspirators are determined not to let Norman die. Ray tells him to break the tracking device and pretend to escape so that he could hide and join the others in their planned escape. The next day Norman prepares for his false escape, but the first tests to their escape plan is by scaling the wall to see the forest beyond.

Dororo

From Osamu Tezuka’s beloved manga. During the 1470s after the Wars of Onin and Bunmei in the Noto Peninsula of the Hokuriku District, Hyakkimaru, who lacks as much as 48 body parts, obtains a fake body and eliminates 48 monsters that were made from his body to retrieve his missing body parts, and regain his humanity.

Tonight’s Episode: “The Story of the Scene from Hell ”

Dororo visits Sabame’s prosperous village, where everyone seems happy. She finds a rice storehouse deep in the forest but is pushed into the basement by the villagers. It is filled with the caterpillar monsters, which menace Dororo, but the baby monster returns to save her.

Attack On Titan (Shingeki ni Kyojin) season 3 part 2

Eren and his companions in the 104th are assigned to the newly-formed Levi Squad, whose assignment is to keep Eren and Historia safe given Eren’s newly-discovered power and Historia’s knowledge and pedigree. Levi and Erwin have good reason to be concerned, because the priest of the Church that Hange had hidden away was found tortured to death, making it clear that the Military Police are involved with the cover-up. Things get more harrowing when the MPs make a move on Erwin and the Levi Squad narrowly avoids capture.

Tonight’s Episode: “Hero ”

Erwin is mortally wounded while leading the charge against the Beast Titan, Zeke expressing mixed feelings while decimating the recruits as Levi reached him by taking out the Titans on his right flank. Meanwhile, Armin realizes the Colossal Titan is immobile while using its steam and gives Eren some detail of his plan while the others hold off a somewhat confused Armored Titan, Reiner having lost his most recent memories due to the last attack.

Jojo no Kimyou na Bouken – Ougen no Kaze (Jojo’s Bizzare Adventure – Golden Wind)

Set in 2001, two years after the events of Diamond is Unbreakable, Koichi Hirose is sent to Italy and tasked by Jotaro Kujo to search for Giorno Giovanna, an aspiring mafia gangster who is a son of Dio Brando. But as Dio possessed the body of Jonathan Joestar at time of his conception, Giorno is technically a Joestar and takes more after them than the father he never knew. The series follows Giorno as he joins the mafia organization Passione, moving up through its ranks with the intention of becoming its boss to improve life in Italy.

Tonight’s Episode: “Green Day and Oasis, Part 1 ”

Bucciarati sends the mold-affected Narancia back into the turtle to be healed by Giorno as he and Mista begin making their way up into the village to escape Cioccolata’s deadly mold. As they climb upwards out of Green Day’s range, Secco ambushes them with his Stand Oasis, which allows him to swim through and soften solid ground. But Bucciarati has an unpleasant advantage.
